The sax player and sometimes singer Nik Turner died recently, RIP Nik, thanks for all the fun & weirdness. The singer and guitarist on this track is Dave Brock the founder of HAWKWIND. Glad to have found you, cheers and greetings from Wales.
This is Hawkwind's Masterpiece to me. Nik is awesome and the two drummers really work. lemmy's bass is solid and Moorcock seriously has influence of his books on Elric.
Also very much influenced by krautrock motorik. Listen to Hallogallo by Neu! Or was it the other way round? Did Hawkwind influence Krautrock? I think the truth is motorik came out of Space Ritual.
Hawkwind's output on the United Artists label, for me includes some of the most amazing music ever recorded. As Lemmy once said. 'It's a lot like Bach, but a bit more violent'.
This is a great song. By a great band. I saw them when this album was released. A stoners head phone favorite. Their early albums were their best. I'm burning one for them. 🤘🃏🎸🥃🍺🤤🕶️
For their next album Quark Strangeness and Charm they did a 180, Lemmy and Nik Turner had been sacked, and they came up with a completely different sound while sticking to their space/ fantasy roots, many considered the album Quark Strangeness and Charm a precursor to the "new wave" I suggest their song Spirit Of The Age (extended version) for a flavor of the new direction they took, it is some of poet, swazzle and tortured genius Robert Calvert's best lyrics, It's a warning and glimpse of a possible future yet to come, the track is backed by a fantastic fractal video. It's a hair long but well worth the experience, some consider it one of the best tracks they ever produced! Thanx for the reaction and bringing attention to Hawkwind, a greatly under recognized band.
Yes two drummers in this lineup (Simon King, Alan Powell), The instruments in the middle section are Nik Turners Sax and Simon House's Violin (heavily effected and delayed). The solid backbone is Dave Brock (Guitar/Vocals) and Lemmy. Stunning live (I saw the tour in 1975 - blew my mind for the light show was breathtaking).
Hi Peter ... Ah, I was right on 2 drummers. That worked really well for this song. Others also have mentioned seeing Hawkwind in the 70's and being a mind blowing concert. I bet you had some fun and the memory of the concert has stayed with you all these years. Take care ...
@@drivingwithtodd1781 Welcome to the wonderful world of Hawkwind!!!!.... may I suggest you listen to "Living on a knife edge" from the album Sonic attack( early 80s and how it relates to today and I dystopian way with mandate cards....etc)... hawkwind is just choc of block of diversity!!!.... the extended version... ua-cam.com/video/jETeXevAB_M/v-deo.html..or go for the 4+mins one...up to you.(better vid on the first one🙂 ua-cam.com/video/X6GmPDyXv6g/v-deo.html
Saw the Warriors tour in the Liverpool Empire with the big cave set, sword fights and dancers. I was 15 years old and seeing the show through a dense cloud of weed smoke and Psilocybin coursing around my brain. One of the experiences of my youth. The night the 'Top Ten' died, I never listened to the charts again. Saw them last August at Chepstow Castle they rocked.
your not the only one who never heard of Hawkwind in fact if it wasn't for me many of my friends would not have heard of them. In 1974 I was 14 and had the Live Space Ritual lp 1973 and later that same year I got Hall of the Mountain Grill. released in 1974, Then a couple years later I get Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music, follow by Quark Strangeness and Charm. Needless to say if you was at my house or in my car your going to hear some Hawkwind. Cruising the back country roads of Ohio chain smoking joints yeah lets crank up Sonic Attack talk about some sound effects to go along with some urgent dialog lol friends be freaking like wtf is that lol
The first six lines are identical (so near as not to quibble) to a magical incantation used to summon a magical horse found in a Slavic folktale published in the 19th century, called "The History Of Prince Slugobyl; Or, The Invisible Knight" “Magu (sic), Horse with Golden Mane, I want your help yet once again, Walk not the earth but fly through space As lightnings flash or thunders race. Swift as the arrow from the bow, Come quick, yet so that none can know.”
you're spot on that's where the lyric is from , first few lines of assualt and battery , lives of great men etc come from a poem by william wadsworth longfellow Dave brock was always into using poems etc it wasn't a secret he wasn't claiming he wrote them
I did an interview in Edinburgh with the band during the Space Ritual tour in late 72 for my university radio station. As the newcomer , Lemmy was put forward to talk with me. We drank a bottle of wine together. Losing Lemmy and Nik Turner were tremendous mistakes. From the moment I first heard this album I was blown away by "Assault and Battery/ Golden Void" but "Magnu" has grown on me during the years.
it's a pity Lemmy's bass is wispy and low in the mix , he said by warrior he was well out of favour with the rest of the band , wish he stayed with them though don't think i ever got over the sound change on astoundingly awful lol
The sf/fantasy writer/poet Micheal Moorcock worked with them and many of his lyrics are heard in the bands songs. Warrior on the Edge of Time has some from his Eternal Champion series. I discovered his stories and Hawkwind at the same time. I believe he wrote `Sonic Attack` on the Space Ritual, and many more. The band featured in one his novels The Time of the Hawklords. He formed his own band Micheal Moorcock and the Deep Fix. Their album was a post apocalyptic themed work, The New Worlds Fair. Simon King,(Hawkwind) and Snowy White(Thin Lizzy) were members. I have the album It`s good, and it`s also on UA-cam..Well worth a listen, maybe a reaction even. I won`t link, I wouldn`t want to spoil the fun!
I have a number of Hawkwind albums but I really think this is their best although I haven't got 'Hall Of The Mountain Grill' yet. I also think "Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music" is one of their best. They found a rich vein of form through the mid seventies. I will always mention their live album "Live Seventy Nine"....it is nothing short of ballistic.
I'd advise you to get Hall of the mountain grill, it's between that and Warrior on the edge of time for their finest studio albums of all the 35 studio albums they've released
These reaction videos of Hawkwind always get completely confused with Nik’s sax. It’s quite hilarious really. Thunder rider. And two drummers? Well, yes. At that point both Simon King and Alan Powell were playing. Also of note was the presence of Simon House on violin who of course went on to do Bowie’s white duke tour etc
Nice to see someone from the other side of the pond experiencing Hawkwind. I used to go to a lot of free festivals in the 80's and met the band many times. Usually tripping on mushrooms and tabs (I had some very nice acid that Rob Calvert informed me he made once, whilst giving us all a lift home in the back of a huge car that I'm sure was chauffer driven but I was so tripped out it could have been anyone driving. I'm sure a police car went past the other way at 600 mph with its lights on too. ) Ah memories... :-)

The track Opa Loka was written by the 2 drummers. Hypnotic.

Astounding Sounds came next.
@SPKdesign1 Yes Nik was sacked after Astounding Sounds Amazing Music 😊 Nik was instrumental in sacking Lemmy.
The greatest band in the Universe.

@@acrookedbeat9013 I have no problem with lyrics that are adapted from historical sources, in fact I enjoy it.

Wooo - got a mention 🙂
Hi Zarathustra N ... It's your 15 seconds of fame! Enjoy ...
Your beginning a great adventure my friend, I've been on Hawkwind for 45 years and would love to give you some suggestions. Take care.... 🎼🎵🎶🖖
Hi wfamdaxj ... I am amazed at all the Hawkwind fans I've met hear from the reactions I've done. They are an amazing band. Thanks for your comment ...
Brilliant.
Love that album :)

Lord of Light or Time We Left off of DoReMe are great songs and really show off Lemmy's bass.
Ruthless tune. Like Dying seas with that middle eastern sound.

Great times. I remember trying to get to the Henge one time. Ended up in a lay-by on the 303 and the band set up and played. Ace trip. Ali Ali Ali.
Glad you liked it. :)

Magnu has so much to do with the marrocan trance sufi / pantheist Boudjeloud from the village of Jajouka.

The violin man? The violin?
Simon House. Do a UA-cam search for " Hawkwind live 1990 " if you want to see him on stage.
@@ant4812 I know have seen simon play with Hawkwind loads. I was referring to the reviewer not mentioning the violin.
@@ant4812 He played for David Bowie in the late seventies too (had to leave Hawkwind fo this) and return sometimes like in 1989-1991
Todd, they are obviously aliens from another planet 😅
Angels of death is a must. Elric and moonglum live is the best.
A rudimentary read up on the lyrics and subject matter would enhance your understanding and enjoyment of some of these type's of songs. Cheers.
lyrics from some longfellow again
