true feminist free thinker provocateur. Dr dray got that wrong. She thought that by vegan retinol, they meant bakuchiol, and then went on a tangent about bakuchiol. I love her channel but that video contained a bit of misinformation.
But I also hate that they market it as “vegan retinol.”
All retinol is vegan. That’s like saying ‘zero carb water.’

Will definitely try the Skinceuticals. Thank yoouuu!
I am tired of DE to be honest. They may have lovely products but if you build a brand on smugness and knowing better than everyone else, you better stick with it. Silicones are the devil but retinol at 1% is fine for everyone. Okay boo, carry on.

    • @liverpool2sex
      @liverpool2sex 5 років тому +13

Skinceuticals is fantastic. They were the first retinol I EVER tried and my favourite. I first tried it years ago (before Skinceuticals was even really known in the UK) and must admit have tried lots of other reinols but NONE of the other retinols are as great as the Skinceuticals one. I tried the DE one and my skin peeled off. The next morning it was peeling and my makeup by the end of he day when I got home from work was patchy where my skin was flaking/peeling off. It took about a week of using really rich cream and sudocrem for my skin to stop peeling. I messaged DE about what happened and was shocked (when I finally got a reply) by their response. They were really condescending and patronising in their reply almost speaking to me like I was a silly little idiotic school girl and almost like it was my fault NOT theirs. I couldn't believe their reply. It is almost like success has gone to their heads? If they don't get down off their soapbox then they are going to lose customers. I like a few of DE items but after the episode with the retinol and their message to me I was insulted and disappointed with them and it has put me off buying other products because of their reply (TBH I bought the item from either Cult Beauty or Space NK (I live in the UK and DE do not ship to the UK) but messaged DE for their advice as they make the product) x

@@liverpool2sex I've read about their terrible replies to people who don't get on with their products. It's so unprofessional and just dumb. I can move on, you know? No brand is truly irreplaceable these days.

Thanks so much for your thorough and honest review, Caroline. Making sense of an 80+ list of ingredients is a bit much even for science-informed individuals - my first inclination is that product folks are trying to obscure attention to important issues - an emphasis on the complexity of the formulation rather than a focus on the efficacy of the actual formula. Your reviews are unparalleled and indispensable in the skincare world 👍😘

Thanks again for your brilliant work!!! And I totally agree about DE A-Passioni; when I first used it a little too close to my eyes I got a very bad reaction. I couldn’t use any make up on my lids or anywhere around my eyes for a week. Even tough I buffered it with moisturizer! Now I use it only on „safe“ areas (forehead, cheeks, chin, bridge of my nose) and keep on buffering.

Great video, totally agree about the DE retinol... I was SO excited to use it, but after more than 2 months of only using it a few times a week with b-hydra as well, my skin was getting more and more irritated. Even washing my face with gentle cleansers burned. My skin is used to acids and retinols so I was shocked my skin reacted this way. It did help a little with some of my scarring. But I quit using it because of how irritated and peeling my skin was. I still have almost my full tube left and I’m terrified to ever use it again. I don’t think it was worth the money I spent on it:( Great review as always

    Thank you, Caroline 💐💐💐
This is what Paula says about the retinol booster: “Dispense 2-3 drops and add to your favourite moisturiser or serum. May also be used alone.”. So I guess the booster is less irritating than the treatment because it doesn’t contain Vit C, and it’s meant to be buffered/mixed (like all her boosters...). It’s also lighter in texture. Basically with these 2 retinol products, she makes it easier for us to use “retinol” all year round.
I think Nathan used to work for PC. He has done a good job since working for DE improving Paula’s Vitamin C booster (the packaging in particular), but he hasn’t been so successful with the retinol.

Just curious which brand SPF are you using for your face while you are using prescription Treninoin/RetinA/Retrides? We all know you aren’t a hater and have been a supporter of DE! You are just being honest and have expert experience for over 20 plus years in the industry working with so many brands/products. As someone who had two bad experiences with DE blaming me for using a suspicious six when I totally didn’t with their products (when I wrote to them about my breaking out from those two of their products, they made me feel shitty. I don’t feel comfortable buying from them after being blamed when it’s possible their products do have the ability to cause skin reactions whether or not they consist of the “suspicious six.” I appreciate what the company does, has accomplished and the charity they do, but I don’t like the fact if you disagree with them, then you are considered a hater which is so wrong. Not every product from a brand is perfect for every single person. A few might be affective for me from a brand, but not the entire line. Thank you for another great informational video on Retinols.

I use the Drunk Elephant A - PASSIONI Retinol Cream. It’s phenomenal. I use it every two, three nights once a day on those days. After cleansing & toning, I use a DE Serum. Let this absorb for a few minutes. I then apply the DE Retinol Cream on its own no where near my eye area. (layering this) Allow this to absorb for a minute or two. I then apply my moisturiser cream a smidgeon of oil together, and done...WORKS PERFECTLY. On nights I don’t use my DE Retinol Cream, I usually mix most of products together, other than my DE acids. These are always applied separately, at any time, to the other products in the DE product range. 98% of my skincare is DE.🙏🏻👏🏻💯👌🏻🥰🌺🇦🇺

Your honesty is why I follow you. So many bloggers seem to have been bought by a brand and unreservedly champion every product... there have to be exceptions particularly when super active chemicals are involved. I like some DE products, but feel their response to my query (why is c firma burning my face?) was money grabbing and dishonest. They immediately told me it was my own fault for not using an extortionately priced DE moisturiser, and all their other gubbins. I wish they had just told me what I needed to hear: start slowly and use a very small amount until your skin adapts. Which I had to get from one of your videos. I love DE products, but I love honesty, specificity and warnings far far more when it comes to skincare that I’m a. Paying the earth for b. Putting on eczema prone skin. Please don’t change - we need people like you 😘

    Hi Caroline,
You asked for feedback about Drunk Elephant vitamin A. I used this product on virgin skin as you call it. I was 32 and wanted to use a retinol after hearing about its benefits. I had no idea what I was doing and I trusted Drunk Elephant because of their convincing marketing. I used it straight, no buffering, every night for maybe 4 nights - luckily I didn’t put it around my eyes, because my skin freaked! It was so red and painful and I was so confused why it would cause that until I started to do my research, which was actually when I found you and the treasure trove of information on your platforms. Kate Somervilles goat milk cleanser and moisturizer saved me btw. But it was such a terrible experience that I am just now looking to try vitamin A again. So, thank you for this video series, it is so helpful and appreciated!

Glad you're doing The Ordinary retinols. They offer one which is 5% 'granactive retinoid' and i find it all so confusing knowing if i'm buying a good strength/quality retinol, especially as i'm on a tight budget at the moment.

Thank you so much, Caroline!!! Good to know I’m not going crazy. I found DE’s retinol not only deceiving, but very poorly packaged. I took the courage to write my review over at SpaceNk after 3 months of literal suffering and burnt face and am waiting for the fans to come after me :) Come as they may, I take solace in the fact that behind the keyboards of the glowing reviews peeling faces are desperately looking for barrier repair solutions in their other tabs. Still cannot get how this product got the reviews it did - even wondered if they’re pulling a Sunday Riley 😂😂😂

Thank you for your honesty Caroline, this is why we love you so much, and so should DE for telling them they are not consistent in their messages and are putting their customers at risk. I was surprised to see their retinol cream in the vignette of your video considering they are a mild product brand for me.
On another note, I've noticed that SkinCeuticals France only proposes their 0.3% cream, not the other ones, I need to ask them why (legislation maybe?).
Take care, sending love from Paris ♥

Re the PC 1% retinol booster: I use it just as that - a booster to be mixed with any number of other moisturizing products (for me, I mix with the PC Calm serum since the 2 products are similarly liquid-ish and thus mesh evenly for even retinol application.) I can't use retinol during the coldest 3-4 months of the year (too drying/ irritating), so there sits idle my little .15ml bottle. But it's just big enough for me to still finish within the 12month usage window. I can use as much/ little as I want according to how my skin is feeling/ looking, and I like the succinct list of ingredients/ efficient packaging (although, plastic is air permeable so I don't love that). It's also priced appropriately. For me, it's a keeper. (until I hear your Medik8 reviews...this brand has my interest.)

@@msheartface5288 Your answer is exactly the kind that DE would typically give to a customer, lol. It must be the customer's fault because the product could never be the problem, right? Wrong: if I had gone against the brand's directions, I would be warning people to follow their guidance, not to stay away from the product altogether if their skin is in any way sensitive.
For the record, I've never used more than PEA-SIZED amount on my face and neck AND I've never used it more than once a week AND I stopped using all other active (and potentially irritating) ingredients while trialling A-Passioni. When using it neat on the skin caused too much irritation, I tried to sandwich it between a hyaluronic and niacinamide serum (The Ordinary) and then a panthenol-containing reparative cream (LRP Cicaplast), which dilutes the product and boosts the skin's barrier function and is recommended by dermatologists to ease your way into retinol use. Still, my face was left peely and burning afterwards, so the problem is definitely the formula and not my application of it. I've tried a number of other retinols with no problems (Paula's Choice, Verso, Sunday Riley, Zelens and Dr Dennis Gross). While it seems to work fine for lots of customers, there are also lots of customers whose skin has been seriously irritated by it (perphaps by one of the 61 non-retinol ingredients in the product, lol). The main point is that brand hasn't done half enough to warn customers of how potentially irritating their product is.

    • @msheartface5288
      @msheartface5288 5 років тому

lavien'estpasunlongfleuvetranquille definitely not the customers fault for sure. I did say further down that I wouldn't be buying full size. Thanks Caroline. You are always so informative. I started using the de retinol about a month ago and would use it 2x a week with a 3rd in between of Jordan samuels. I figured I had used the JS for awhile and shouldn’t have a problem. I noticed my skin around my temples, close to my eye, was appearing like I had a bad sunburn. And my mint gel cleanser stung. I stopped using it 2x and switched to 1 in between JS. I can’t imagine anyone putting that directly around the eye. I will continue to use up the DE
as long as the current use doesn’t irritate. But then I think I will switch to Rene Rousseau. I really like her products.

  • @annotherme7954

I love that you're keeping it totally transparent despite the very unfortunate and sad fact that you might get called out by a brand. I'm learning this right now actually, I don't understand how a brand could not appreciate a respectful and constructive feedback from its customers and people who have been working in the industry for years. If anything, receiving it positively could only benefit their image.
As for myself, I have been using the DE retinol for weeks now, and I am still peeling big time. I have never used so little of a product (not my first retinol), with so much of the side effects in return.
I've only been using it twice a week, buffering it when I felt that my skin hadn't recovered from the previous application. Right now, I'm skipping an application to let my skin repair itself and recover from the sensitivity.
What I find strange, is that, despite a very careful application (pea size, avoiding the eye area and any place the skin could "fold" and cause the product to stagnate in one place...) the reaction keeps on being very irregular. I sometimes apply it twice a week with moderate peeling and no sensitivity, but then I might all of a sudden get very sensitized skin that peels like a boiled potato.
I'm not an expert in formulation, but it doesn't "feel" like this one is "stable".
Now as far as warning those who might think this is ok to use on virgin skin, or even one that has only been used to mild retinols: I inadvertently slid my hands from the back of my neck to my clavicles after applying this product. So lightly and unintentionally, that I had to retrace my steps and any product (hair, face, body..) I had used in the past few days to try and understand what was happening.
The back of my neck, the collar area, and the place where it meets my traps (and conviniently folds when you sleep on your side) started becoming red, swollen and ichy as the day went. By the end of the day, it looked like I had had a rope tied and rubbed around my neck on different spots. Full blown burn.
Mind you, this was two days after the application. I've been alternating applications of marula oil, hyaluronic acid and manuka honey to heal the burns and speed up the repairing process, and though it is much better, I'm still at it a week later. Imagine taking THAT around your eyes.
I still can't speak for the results of the product, but it is very irritating, and buffering it is not an option in my opinion, it is mandatory if you want to keep your skin from going through different stages of peeling/inflamation or worse.
I'll keep at it because the potential results(and the money spent honestly) are enough motivation, but I WILL be making sure to buffer it every time. Imagine using a product to take your skin to the next level, only to have it cause more lesions and damage @@.

I've been following their advice, using for two nights with CEO oil, then my regular routine the following two nights, and alternating that way. And have to say, I've had no bad reaction and my skin looks glowing and is very happy. I find that SR gives immediate pay off with most products, and am waiting to hopefully see improvements and changes over time as well with this.........but so far, so good and it's been a great first taste of VitA!.

Excellent, Caroline. I couldn’t agree with you more about DE. I followed their IG and was cringing at the suggestions and advice (they have since backed off a bit) of mixing this retinol EVEN with the TLC glycolic at night. You never use an AHA/BHA together with a retinol (especially 1%). That is a recipe for disaster, and will most definitely disrupt your skin barrier. I don’t know why they would even think to suggest that. I happen to love their BHydra and CFirma, but I got really turned off with this marketing of their APassioni. Thx for your hard work!

Somewhere on the instructions for DE it says you can mix with C-firma (daytime) or TLC (night time) I believe. Not a good idea. My face was on fire!
Also don’t put it on your eyes... tried that too, as per their instructions. My eyelids looked and felt like I’d burnt them, were tight and unable to wear make up.
I have used Obagi prescription tret (1%, 0.5% and 0.25%) and obagi non prescription retinol 0.5 and 1%, in the past with no problems. Will try buffering the DE with moisturiser, because I still find it very strong.

B Coffee I have tried the Passioni with the C-Firma and the TLC. But I alternated it at night for a few months. Once my skin got used to it, I started layering all 3 with the Peptides and moisturizer as a buffer. I can only tell my skin is peeling if I put foundation...the good news is I can get away with just my tinted SPF because the formulas work!

I find the marketing in skincare, across the board, often misleading. Not for every brand, I find some (precious few) to be candid and honest and genuinely trying to be unlike what we have seen in the past. And it's not just recently of course, there has been misinformation and marketing outrageous promises since the beginning of advertisement. Yet, what I have a problem with even more is that the newer 'indie' 'clean' brands are so smug about their product and yet employ the same kind of acrobats that the old brands have done just in different formats such as Instagram and social media. It's hypocrisy. I'm not saying Drunk Elephant does not have great skin care, but I find myself being turned off by their message here and there. This goes for a few others I have seen as well. Thank you for calling brands out on that. Thank you for your honesty and integrity.
