I live in the UK and a few years ago we had a guy’s holiday/ grunge pilgrimage to Seattle. For me MoPop was definitely a highlight.
Flew across the country to see this exhibit.(oh and the Olympic peninsula)
I was never hugely into Nirvana or grunge (I obviously know a few of their songs), but I still feel a connection to the time and place in my life where this music was everywhere. Also, the exhibit at MoPOP was super interesting and well thought out. I learned a lot about Kurt and how the band came to be. Haven't been there since probably 2019... and maybe it's time to head back again!
May I recommend a few deep cuts? Sappy, Old Age, Do Re Mi, D-7, Even In His Youth, Return of the Rat, Aero Zeppelin, If You Must
I wish Kurt was still here. I remember hearing the news like it was yesterday, moments like those get indelibly etched in your memory.
Well he certainly wasn't a good guy or anything. He had some talent though.

Nirvana's music was so powerful on an introspective and musical synergy level.
You'll never forget the first time hearing that F, Bb, Ab, Db intro for "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
It was like your ears had a primal awakening.
Cool exhibit. Rest easy Kurt.

Those too young to know what punk rock is go back to the late 70’s early 80’s. Circle Jerks, TSOL, 999, Dead Kennedy’s, Dickies, and the one’s who broke punk to main stream The Sex Pistols. While Nirvana and Kurt may have been influenced by punk they were different and thankfully got us out of the hair metal era! RIP Kurt and Layne!
More of a Ramones guy, but not much into punk in general, but I like punk influence, like new wave
80's hair metal has to be one of the worst eras of music. And it seems like everyone I meet that's into it are a different breed 😂

No genre from the 70s and 80s spoke to me quite like the 90s Grunge music. Kurt Cobain was the 90s John Lennon to me. He was a visionary and yet so fragile. To this day Nirvanas music and Kurts spirit endure.
Fragile? Poor health due to drug addiction but hardly fragile.

@@soulslip My point is live your own life and don't hero worship. I've heard so many people say that when they meet the celebrity of their dreams and walk away completely disappointed. Imagine meeting Kurt and he's not interested in you because he's more worried about getting his next fix.

How does the museum get those items? Do they buy them or are they donated? I have something that I think would be a great fit there but I don't really know how much they would pay for it , or if at all.
Usually it's donated or loaned items for exhibits like this, which might not be "permanent" but only on display for like a year or something. If you have something cool you could donate it too or if you want $ sell it. PS what is it haha
@@jmason61 I have an original (sub pop)Bleach Casette signed by all 4 members. I met them outside Saturday Night Live in 1994. I was just a dumb, drunk teenager that worked up every ounce of courage I had to get what I wanted LOL. It wasn't easy. It was the 3rd best day of my life. ( My 2 kids come 1st) It's been my absolute treasure for 30 years!! Tried getting some prices for it but was kind of misled. I was actually invited to be on Pawn Stars but it got ridiculous and fell through. I would only sell to a true fan / collector at this point. I actually did contact the museum, but never got a response. I guess they're not interested?? Thanks for the info and thanks for asking.

The Univox Hi-Flier Phase 3 (Sunburst) that was Kurt's first guitar he smashed on 10/30/88 at Dorm K208, The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA If you listen to the Audio real well at the end you can hear someone from the Audience asked Kurt why he smashed his guitar and Kurt replied It wouldn't stay in Tune...
And then Kurt bought a Left-Handed Fender Mustang for $20 from a Student at the Evergreen State College, and it only had the Neck, Body, and Tremolo Plate Hardtail and Bridge, no Pickguard or electronics, so the Univox Kurt Smashed at the end of the 10/30/88 show Kurt Used the Univox Hi-Flier Humbucker screwed in the Bridge Position into the body, and Used the Univox Hi-Flier Pots (Volume/Tone/Input Jack), and Used the broken bottom half of the Univox Pickguard as a Mustang Control Plate, and used the Univox Vol/Tone Knob, onto the Mustang, which had a Soundgarden Sticker and later on a Home Made Vinyl Record Pickguard of Thomas Road Baptist Church "Where Are The Dead?"

Nirvana were hardly just "punk".
To be honest, most punk is hardly just punk. Even the Ramones have a few songs that delve into other genres.

The Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Stooges, Misfits, Circle Jerks, Descendents, Green Day, Suicidal Tendencies, there’s obv more. There are songs with heavy punk influence but it’s not just punk

That's funny I just read a thing about that. Basically the story in the article I read was that Eddie Van Halen came to see Nirvana play and he was really really drunk. He obnoxiously asked them to let him come Play Smells Like Teen Spirit with them to which they declined . Basically he was being gross and rude and egotistical and Kirk was totally not feeling it plus it was his chance to thumb his nose the at the pinnacle of just obnoxious, rock star excess and gross,noodling style guitar playing that Kurt did everything in his power to change for the better by encouraging young musicians to be true to themselves not some 80s demagogue with an ugly striped guitar’snotion of what good music is or was.

Eddie Van Halen had a far longer lasting impact on music and was a million times more talented a musician.

That being said, as a guitarist/musician/producer who has been playing for 37 years and who has worked in and around the industry, I beg to differ. No one can takeaway EVHs contribution to rock n Roll and guitar playing as a whole but his talent is so much more narrow and focused compared to Kurt’s. Technically, there’s no comparison- Eddie could run circles around Kurt but what we hear from Kurt’s very calculated anti-guitar hero style hides his true prowess as a player. Plus, try to play and sing Mr Moustacne or even All Apologies. It’s not as easy as it sounds- which brings me to my point. EVH and Van Halen released 12 full length LPs over the course of 40+ years- selling over 56 million copies. Nirvana sold 75 million records over the course of 5 albums- 2 of which were compilations of b sides and demos and an unplugged set. So, really only 3 albums. Do I need to keep going? No?Too bad. I’m obviously not in the know on your screen name but chestrockwell (is that Chester Rockwell or just a bad play on words about the ubiquitous ogling of boobs is the Van Halen school of rock? Doesn’t matter. So, I challenge you to ask kids today who EVH was then ask who Kurt Cobain was. It’ll be interesting. I definitely don’t see someone wearing a Van Halen shirt every single time I go outside. Nor do I hear Van Halen on the radio nearly as often as Nirvana. Eddie Van Halen kicks ass at shredding but he’s not even half the songwriter Kurt is. I mean EVH having a bigger and longer impact on music simply isn’t true even a little bit nor did Van Halen do much of anything to raise the consciousness of the culture as a whole as. Nirvana did. While Van Halen promoted partying,misogyny and ozone depleting levels of hairspray. Obviously, I’m not dogging getting fucked up but it is a crap image to promote. Crappier than that is Van Halen’s objectification of women especially in their videos and simple minded lyrical content especially during the David Lee Roth years. Sammy Hagar did improve both areas during his tenure as lead singer and even wrote Dont Tell Me when he heard about Kurt’s death. Nirvana, on the other hand, actively promoted women’s & LGBTQ rights, took part in various benefit shows such as those for Bosnian Rape Victims, the Mia Zapata murder, ProChoice and Rock the Vote. Yes, Van Halen contributed to many charities like Mr Hollands Opus and The Rape Foundation but turned around and did wild shit w backstage groupies and paraded women w giant modded breast around on camera. Kinda misses and even defeats the purpose. Nirvana lived what the stood for and Van Halen was often vapid at best and harmful at worst. There’s just no comparison about who had the larger cultural impact. Nirvana was around for almost 7 years and has done more to inspire and influence the culture of today than almost any band since the Beatles. They did, with 2 major label albums, what Van Halen failed to accomplish with a dozen. Kurt influenced everything from acceptance of alternative lifestyles to what guitars are bought and sold at this moment. For a shitty guitarist Fender has made 3 types of guitars from jaguars to mustangs to his hybrid of the two- the jagstang. The dude was only a star for like 2.5 years. That’s pretty good. Anyway, my original post just corrected the misinterpretation of Charles video since Kurt wasn’t trying to IMPRESS anyone that night. EVH already had been unimpressive and a drunken nuisance who totally missed the message Nirvana tried to convey. You don’t have to be a rock star to play music. You just have to love it and be true to yourself. Arpeggios and tapping are less important and impactful than heart and soul and hard work. My daughter who is 16 said when I asked her about both guys… “everyone knows who Kurt Cobain is but who is Eddie Van has been, anyway?” True story…The end

EVH also made racist comments at that notorious show backstage denigrating Pat Smear and saying Kurt shouldn't have hired a "mexican"--reeeeally bad. He was drunk and notoriously belligerent, which is no excuse. I think VH had a couple excellent songs in the hagar era (recall the Right Now video and the more heartfelt song 'humans being') but you are absolutely correct that EVH while he did do cancer benefits, that was pretty much it. Kurt did more activism and rights based benefits and statements in such a short amount of time than anyone I can recall in the 90s other than Sinead o' Connor who stuck to dealings with racism and child rapists/abuse. Kurt was definitely more of a humanitarian than EVH, and Eddie's career was pretty much over by 2000. Eddie inspired guitarists to play better technically and that was pretty much it. Kurt inspired people for multiple reasons and inspired musicians to be better songwriters and that there was more to rock n' roll than partying and t*ts & as*. Even though he was quite ill on drugs and chose to end his life which are not aspiring characteristics, I have to agree that EVH was just not as impactful and inspiring all things considered. Truth be told, they both wasted their talent and potential in different ways, they both inspired musicians, but Kurt impacted everyone for better or worse in what happened to him in just 3 short years.
The most impressive are the mix between clothes and guitars. Seems like, Kurt still here.....haunting.

Punk goes against the mainstream popular bands. Nirvana was the most popular band of their era. Can't rebel against the majority of you are the majority. Kurt didn't have to be on Mtv as much as he was, but that's how he got rich and famous. Punks aren't trying to be rich or famous. Go figure

He was the first real mainstream advocate for gays and women when it wasn't "cool" with the mainstream by any stretch. He wasn't trying to be rich and famous. @@wyattcole5452 In terms of music history, Seattle actually punches way above its weight - Jimi Hendrix, The Sonics, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Heart, Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, Presidents of the US, Queensryche, Quincy Jones, Brandi Carlilse, Sir Mix-a-Lot, and many more.

Theyre pretty punk. Kurt was all about expressing himself, he had feminist values, their music was pretty raw and emotional and not so polished and he didn’t WANT to be rich and famous.

Yo, they have heavy punk influences, and they do have heavy rock projects. Understand that genres can evolve and change from decade to decade. The kind of grunge they played was an offshoot of punk rock. Without punk rock, nirvana wouldn’t exist. As someone who likes punk rock and listens to classic punk, and listens to Dead Kennedys, Black flag, and then riot girl punk that Cobain had friends in, it absolutely can be heard in nirvanas music if you actually listen to more than one album! Especially in utero!
