I was 17 in 1994…in my full grunge stage. I remember walking into the house and my mom telling me about Kurt being gone. The sadness and anger of my idol being gone, was almost unbearable. 29 years later, I still can’t believe it but, knowing Kurt’s mind better now as opposed to when I was that 17 year old kid, I’ve come to a sort of peace with his passing. What a time. We witnessed the beginning and end of grunge in my opinion. When I see a youngster walking around with a Nirvana shirt on today, I wonder if they really understand what they are wearing or, if it’s just become a fashion statement. I miss Kurt and his music but, I miss how real and sarcastic his personality was probably more. He’d never want anyone to say this but, RIP LEGEND….you changed the world for a time. 🤘

I was also 17 in 1994. But to this day, I don't think my mother has ever heard of grunge! 😂
As for kids wearing Nirvana T-shirts? I think a select few of them probably know and like their music (even if it will never be the same experience for them)
but mostly, I suspect a lot of them are wearing them for the same reason they might wear a Jimi Hendrix or Pink Floyd shirt: it looks cool...

The crazy part of the story to me is Kurt sat next to Duff from GNR on the plane back to Seattle right before he killed himself. Him and Duff talk the plane ride back when they landed Kurt and Duff's friend went outside to have a smoke. When Duffs friend got back inside after the smoke Duff said to him Kurt seemed pretty down and that they should invite him to hang out at Duffs place. Right at that moment Kurt's taxi came and picked him up and he was gone. I always if there was a chance Kurt would have changed course if his car never came that fast.

I remember where I was when I heard Kurt had died. I love his music more than any other band/artist, both before he died and after. I never considered him a “voice” for me but I felt connected to his songs. Like him I felt/feel unwanted by my dad. I’m the youngest of 3 kids, my brother was the smart one, my sister was the pretty one and I was the weird, ugly one.
I’ve battled with depression since my first suicide attempt when I was 11. Hearing this incredible (and good looking) artist say he felt ugly and stupid made me feel less like a freak and that might not be as pointless as I usually felt.
I’ve been on anti-depressants for decades and am doing better. I still fight depression (more so lately) but am not suicidal. Kurt probably never knew how deeply his death would affect his family, friends and fans. I’m just a regular person, but I know my family loves me and this gives me hope. I look for joy and beauty in the little things which also helps.
At times I can’t list to Nirvana because he killed himself. But in the good times I still love his music.
Sorry for the long post. By the way Michael you made me burst out laughing when you mentioned the nude beach.
You may want to consider doing a piece on Layne Staley from Alice In Chains, he is another great artist gone too soon.

I was 17 when that happened. I was spending the weekend at a friends house, watching MTV when Kurt Loder came on and talking about him being missing. It was the next day when Loder announced that he was found dead. Definitely the saddest day of my life. I found it rather ironic that I am sitting here playing video games and watching UA-cam while wearing my Nirvana Smiley Face t-shirt. He did not understand how much the fans had love for him and his music which was the best thing to listen to during those days. If he was still alive still making music he would be so big bigger than he ever was.

What a terrible loss his death was & still is to all his fans & his loved ones. How tragic that out of all those epic bands the only frontman that is still with us is Eddie Vedder...so sad 😔

When anybody chooses to end ones' life, we all wonder why, and what we can do to change the mind set----- I applaud the great work that mental health care workers do daily for many of us (me included), who have hard issues..... Keep on trucking ALL you people... even the ones who are not health care workers. Thanks, GriMMs for this episode.....

In 1994 I was 14 years old and still grieving the deaths of 3 loved ones by suicide the preceding years. I was so upset by his death but couldn't cry. My heart hardened for years after that; struggling to let people get too close for fear of losing them.
Our pain is temporary, our lives have more meaning than we sometimes know. If you are struggling, talk to someone. Don't believe what your mind is telling you. Take one day at a time. You are worthy and you are loved.

When I lived in Federal Way from August 1997-June 2000, I begin to experience and see the Devastating Epidemic of Suicide in King County,WA. It just Surreal how ORDINARY it seemed up there. Our Home Church's Pastors Son had Committed Suicide in 1993, and it was STILL Difficult even in 1998 for Members to discuss it, since the kid was only 14 years old. I remember watching a KOMO 4 News Report on Teen Depression in '98 and it talked about a 13 year old Kid living in Burien who had been bullied and teased for having "Boy Tits". He was so overwhelmed, that he took his Father's Belt and Hung himself. The Article showed the SAME Bullies at his Wake with blank Expressions and Absolute REMORSE, and when his Mother went up to his Coffin and broke down, one of his Bullies ran up to her Weeping "I'm So Sorry! I'm Sorry! I'm Sorry! I'm Sorry".

That was the first time I ever cried over the death of a musician. It was a real shocking and sad day for me on April 8th 1994. I also wanted to say that I love your work. Graffiti Highway is one of my favorite ones. I used to live about 45 minutes from there and had visited many times before it was buried. I had seen another video of Kurt's bench. At the time it was filmed written on the second bench was Layne Staley's bench. Staley is still visible. Layne was written over. I wasn't sure if you had noticed it. I’m old enough to have endured hair metal in college (hated it then, sort of nostalgic now… not really), but Nirvana was the beginning of a renaissance of solid alternative rock music in the early ‘90s. From Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, STP, NIN, etc., they were among my favorites. After Kurt died, that music went with him. Crazy how more rockers from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s have outlived more of the ‘90s grunge singers.
