Hi thank you for your great video about the dahlia tubers. Can I please have the name of the ink pencil you used to label the tubers, also where can I get them from? Can I get it from amazon?
Yay I’m so excited! Will this be your first time dividing dahlias? So yes, you can let them dry for 24 hours before putting them back into storage. I mentioned that in my digging, dividing, and storing video, but I must have been too excited and didn’t mention it here. 😆 I’ll make a note in the description. 💕
I actually don't start mine in pots. I plant them directly outside once there's no chance of frost, so for me that's late April or May. However, if you wanted to get an early start, you could start them in containers indoors about 4 weeks before your last frost, and then slowly transition them outdoors like you would with seedlings after any chance of frost.
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia Thank you! My Dahlias barely bloomed last year before the frost hit (they were planted directly in the ground). Thanks for the 4 week suggestion. I've read online, that last year wasn't a great year in my area for Dahlias. I also found out that Dahlias have different bloom times (i.e. 75 days, 90 days, 120 days etc). Perhaps the Toto Anemone dahlia I have is one that takes 120 days. After watching your videos, I purchased a few 75 day dahlias from swan island. Can't wait to give them a go this year.
Would love to win a pencil! Last year was my first year growing dahlias. I pulled up 40 divisions from 10 initial tubers! The only division I did last fall was to split any tuber sections that were loose within the clump. Love your videos, I’m learning a lot.
Awww thank you Lisa! 🤗 40! Thats amazing! Okay, I know dividing dahlias can be a little stressful, but isn't it the BEST feeling when you see your stock of dahlias multiply!? I get so excited over it. 😂
For me I think it's equal. I always use super sharp tools, so I don't notice too big of a difference. I guess if you do divide in the Fall, they seem a little more rubbery.
The first time I stored tubers, I had live eyes on my old stems like an inch or two above from where the tubers meet the neck. Have you expirienced anything like that?
Hmm, were they around the crown of the clump? I have found some eyes high on the crown and not too close the neck like in others. But I still divided them and they were okay. If you aren't sure or if you are worried you could plant the entire clump again, unless its really large, then I would divide. Feel free to send my a picture on Facebook or Instagram if you'd like me to take a look. 🥰
Such a good video! I have been fearful to divide mine...this was really helpful. I would love to win a pencil...they look like a terrific tool . I did buy the curved knife at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens at Christmas.
How exciting Ronda!! Okay good job on buying the knife, its super helpful. Make sure it's sharpened, you might have to sharpen after dividing a few clumps, at least I did. You're going to do great, I'm so excited for you. 😍
Yes! If you are a beginner dividing in the spring may be easier since the eyes typically have a green or purple color to them so they are more easily identifiable. However if you dived them shortly after digging them it, they are also pretty visible. I hope you saw the examples in my dividing videos, I tried to show close ups. 🥰
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia Thanks, I guess it's not real "brain surgery" on a Dahlia tuber - stoopid me : D Today saw your new Swan Nurs Vid, what an operation to actually remove and replant 40 acres of Dahlia's! I apprec. you showing us the many aspects of their whole opr & it being labor intensive like us home gardeners, no shortcuts to get these beauties: ) ps Is your interior renovation coming along? Did you plant up your new back yard - Lots of trees, perennials & Figs? I remember the concrete being hoisted into place. So many exciting projects to behold (like Laura & Aaron at Garden Answer) Seems like you fell off my YT radar ??? but glad to see you're back.

Hi Formosa, I think I added a note to the description about waiting a day or two before storing after dividing, if not I will. Also I mentioned that in my latest dividing video. As far as common, I have never used that and have never had any issues before. But good callout for anyone who has issues with storing dahlias.🥰

Can I please have the name of the ink pencil you used to label the tubers, also where can I get them from?
Can I get it from amazon?
Hello, happy it was helpful. You can go to www.dahlias.com. I get them from Swan Island Dahlias. ❤️
Don't the wounds have to dry and seal before you put them back into storage? I haven't divided them yet. I expect to do that next month.
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia Yes...the first time. I sure love your videos! You should give away some dahlia tubers hint hint :)
How many weeks before your last frost date, due you typically take your dahlias out of storage, to start in pots?
Thank y ou!
You're welcome, I hope it was helpful.
Is the clump more tender to cut in the fall or the spring?
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia thanks for the sharpening advice. I wouldn't have thought to do that since it's brand new.

Happy this video was helpful. ❤️
is it easier to distinguish eyes during the spring? I' cant find any so far
Yes! If you are a beginner dividing in the spring may be easier since the eyes typically have a green or purple color to them so they are more easily identifiable. However if you dived them shortly after digging them it, they are also pretty visible. I hope you saw the examples in my dividing videos, I tried to show close ups. 🥰
What if you mess up and have more than 1 eye for a tuber? Do you cut out the other "brains" just leaving one for one tuber? Thanks : D
I would just leave them. 🥰
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia Thanks, I guess it's not real "brain surgery" on a Dahlia tuber - stoopid me : D Today saw your new Swan Nurs Vid, what an operation to actually remove and replant 40 acres of Dahlia's! I apprec. you showing us the many aspects of their whole opr & it being labor intensive like us home gardeners, no shortcuts to get these beauties: )
ps Is your interior renovation coming along? Did you plant up your new back yard - Lots of trees, perennials & Figs? I remember the concrete being hoisted into place. So many exciting projects to behold (like Laura & Aaron at Garden Answer) Seems like you fell off my YT radar ??? but glad to see you're back.

Hello sister 🙏🙏🙏❤️
How many dahlias do you grow?
Sheri, last year a grew a little over 100, this year it will be more. 😆 I don’t know exactly yet how many more, but luckily I have a friend with 14 acers which will hopefully be my overflow flower garden. 🤣 How about you, do you grow dahlias?
you didn't mention the need to dry tubers before storage and using cinnamon on cut areas
Hi Formosa, I think I added a note to the description about waiting a day or two before storing after dividing, if not I will. Also I mentioned that in my latest dividing video. As far as common, I have never used that and have never had any issues before. But good callout for anyone who has issues with storing dahlias.🥰
