English kid here; younger than you. I was heavily into Star Wars but never saw this set in a shop or heard anyone talk about it - until I guy on my street decided he'd outgrown Star Wars and sold me this and a mini-sized die-cast Star Destroyer (with opening belly hatch and Tantive IV) for £5.
Unfortunately, being cardboard, it didn't survive a few years in the loft as did the plastic toys. Oops.

For a cardboard playset, it is an incredible toy. It was genius to make the quadrants so you can re-enact scenes from the movie. And the engineering is impressive, the trash compactor and the walkway and all the details would have made playing with this thing a ton of fun. Love this video. Thanks for all your hard work.

I don't think Palitoy realised how good it was and made very few. Yes cost might have been a factor I suppose, but the Death Star has much more playability than any other toy in the line and that includes the Falcon etc..

I used to own this death star . In the early 1980s, I decided that I didn’t want it anymore. I put it in my back garden and set fire to it imagining it was the rebels blowing up the death star. That is the biggest regret of my life next to selling every single one of my original Star Wars figures for less than £20, so it’s great to see this video showing lots of toys that I used to own thank you for the memories

I had this set as a kid. Was the Palitoy version, not the Tolstoy’s one (I’m in Australia). Was my most-used toy from that collection, and I had quite a collection
Had a Toltoys (might also have been Palitoy) X-wing, without lights and sounds. This was easily fixed with a trip to the local Tandy (an electronics store, not around these days) for a light, motor, push button switch, and battery holder. Disassembled the ship, drilled out the nose where the light went, and fitted it. Cut out a piece in the base, for the battery pack, and drilled out the top, to fit the push button. Cut the removed piece in two, and fitted them back in place, so they could swing open, like saloon doors, attaching them with some white electrical tape. Worked like a charm. Not too shabby for a fourteen yo, with no electrical experience… :)
    Cheers,

This is SUPER cool. I used to make the endore base out of a shoe box. Then I used two and a half shoe boxes to make the WWF titantron (probably 15 inches off the ground (so it was to scale. I covered everything in white paper, then used tin foil and red construction paper for the “Raw is war” with the black construction too. It was two shoe boxes with the lids then a wall between (for Gorilla) which I super glued a piece of a black shirt (for the curtain) then I used the lid from one of boxes to make it into a ramp. I always had two tables with a piece of that cut black shirt. It was actually something I put a lot of effort into

My second favourite Star Wars toy as a boy (behind only the AT AT). I got it for Christmas in 1979, went to church in the morning and one of my brothers had put it together for me by the time we got back. Many happy hours playing with it. And surprisingly durable for cardboard; it lasted longer than many of my plastic toys. I still have the Action Force version Palitoy put out a few years later.

Another great video Joey! We didn't have many playsets back home in France but this one ! I can't tell how many times I blew up my Palitoy Death Star, one the toy I played the most with as a kid ! It was Palitoy Packaging designer David Barnacle's son on the main packaging picture who played with the Death Star and I remember having 10 plastic bases with the Meccano packaging instead of six with the Palitoy packaging (did Meccano was more generous or was it an accident ? that I don't know) The top shield see thru cover used to be crystal clear but faded out to an orange yellow color true times like action figures blister cards and I used to park my Tie Fighter in the docking bay or Imperial Troop Transport. What a fun time it was!

I got one of these for my tenth birthday. My best friend had just got the standard TIE fighter for Christmas, and I had got Vaders TIE and we both had X-Wings.
What we did to those toys would probably give modern collectors the absolute shits. But to say that we "Modded them" would be an understatement. We took cannons and tank guns from Airfix WWII model kits and glued them to the XWings, used Humbrol model paints to give them unique markings and put fins on the TIE's from Angel Interceptor model kits. We used the Death Star as a template for how to construct hard-card models and built a big base, and since we were getting into D&D at the same time we created combat rules and used the figures as new characters and invited kids round to battle our collections against theirs using the combat rules we'd written and using the Polyhedral dice from the D&D box sets.
For the following summer the landing at the top of the stairs in my house had more of a queue of kids wanting to play than the Space Invaders and Asteroid machines in the local cafe.

I had both ! Living in the UK, I had the Palitoy version first, but remember at the time that it felt cheap and a bit quaint. When we took a family holiday to California in 1979, I saw the US version, and being a rather spoilt 9 or 10 year, I old probably made my parents' holiday hell until they bought it for me - although the fact that I ended up in emergency after falling off a back-peddle-braking BMX during the stay, may also have had something to do with it ! I clearly recall waiting in the bagage hall on our return to Heathrow and seeing the box arrive on the carousel with our cases. It felt far more solid and was more impressive to look at than Palitoy's, plus nobody else had it. So it took pride of place in my collection and made a lot of my friends very jealous…

This was one of the original Star Wars toys I missed when I was a kid, is used to retail for £10 when new here in the UK (I was 7 years old at the time). I finally got a good used boxed example off ebay in 2003 for £144, which I thought was expensive but looking at costs now I think it was a bargain. 1980 was my best Festivus, it was pretty much a Star Wars theme for me, the Falcon, Death Star, AT-AT, regular TIE & Vader TIE, X-Wing I called Rudy (with the light-up nose), a Taun-Taun, A-Wing and over 50 Empire action figures, Sears had multi-pack sets of 7 random figures, one pack had all 4 bounty hunters, there were a few doubles but you could trade your friends for more Stormtroopers, you could never have enough Stormtroopers when you always played against your friends as The Empire. My Vader had Twiki the Butlerbot and Daggit the Friendly Attack Dogbot as his besties.

Another of those “lucky Canadians” here, and I actually owned this amazing playset via Sears’ Christmas Wish Book. It even came with two Stormtroopers. Got countless joyous hours of play out of it. It was ingeniously designed, but being made out of cardboard meant it didn’t survive more than a few years. My best friend at the time was also a huge Star Wars fan, and we tended to collect complementary playsets and vehicles. I had the Palitoy Death Star and he had the Kenner version, I had the AT-ST and he had the AT-AT, etc. I always envied his AT-AT, but even he admits that my Death Star was cooler. Lol.

Hey….thanks for clearing up a mystery of 45 years. I remember on the first U.K. run of the classic 8 figures (silver and black card backing), they advertised the X-wing fighter on the back.
My older brother was very despondent that it was clearly advertised as ‘with laser light and sound’ - especially when he got it that Christmas and it did not. It also looked pretty stupid with the box showing Luke Skywalker inside in Tattoine gear, as X-wing fighter pilot had not been released yet.
I think I did better. I got Micronauts Microtron which dumped all over his present.

Children, parents, and adult collectors rarely complain, often love the added elements. Great way to add value for everyone without increasing the price for manufacturer or consumer.
