      I've never used Track Matte myself, but I know lots of people use transparent video and exported Keynote animations for transitions in Ecamm. If Track Matte works in a similar way, then it should be fine.

    One tip for people that use obs and want to readjust audio levels after the live stream, you can save up to 6 audio tracks while recording. So you could use 1 for live streaming and save an additonal 5 tracks which you could later adjust / remix.
    Ecamm seems to be good in one particular use case (also it renders itself quite useless in some others seeing that it only runs on mac). And I think that is why you like it. And I think that if you already have a following (or have enough money to throw at it) it could certainly be worth it.
    But I don't see it as a program for beginners. So what is the benefit for easy to use if you have to learn an other program first, and (yes I'm quite technical so maybe bit biased) why not stay then with that program that is more powerful in my eyes.
    Most beginners start with lesser gear, so one of the most important parts is using audio filters (the noise reduction / noise gate / compressor certainly) are amazing to make the sound so much better. But with ecamm you have to use a different program (which makes it difficult to use) for basic filters that you certainly want if you have a bit cheaper gear.
    Also I think the price is a bit high for a starter, but I can see that if you get a source of income from your video's / streams that it can be worth it if it makes your work easier
    However I also see that as a barrier for starters, because I think the 192$ is better spend on gear in the beginning, and that will impact the stream /video more than the software.
    I hope they can improve both (with maybe another tier of pricing for first year or max viewer or something to make it easier to get started with), and the filters should be kindoff straightforward, so I expect that they will include that at some point (otherwise I would be quite dissappointed).
    Last point, do you have to change the audio delay if you change the framerate? Or does it change with the framerate? Looks like a potential thing that could mess up a stream if someone changes the framerate (I would like to see both frames and ms)

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the tip about audio in OBS! That's awesome. Ecamm can also do ISO recording for audio tracks, which is super handy.
      I'm not necessarily aiming this video at beginners, which I think renders the price argument a bit moot. $400 is considerably more expensive than $0, but for for working professionals or even hobbyists with a budget, it's very fair.
      OBS has always been powerful, and they've really worked to improve it's feature-set and reliability lately, which is awesome to see. For me though, I used OBS for years and part of my workflow included "accounting for OBS." Something would inevitably go wrong, crash, or stop working (especially when using it on a daily basis). Ecamm has never crashed or frozen on me a single time. It's not perfect, but it's incredibly reliable, and part of that is because they only have to develop it for one operating system.
      Great question about audio delay and framerate- it's usually a good idea to adjust it if you change. going from 30fps to 24fps might not be a huge difference, but going from 24fps to 60fps might create a bigger delay.

    Amazing video again cheers Tom! I've got an old Canon 60D right now. And I love the simplicity of using it with Ecamm Live to record straight to my computer. It's just plugged in via USB. However, the max setting is 1080p... and combined with the low'ish bitrate from Ecamm Live, my videos don't come out as crisp (like yours)... esp on larger screens. Would simply upgrading my camera to something that can stream in 4k make a big difference to the quality? Or would it still be better for quality to record onto an SD card first and then transferring to my computer? Got NDIdeas for me on this? ;)

    Thanks for that break down and comparison. Awesome video 👏🏾 Ecamm is encamped in my mind now. I might OBliterate OBS if I can get a Mac.
    Another thing that’s great about it being on Mac is that Mac has great desktop switching so you could have ECamm take up an entire desktop and then switch between desktops where you might be doing something else. Your super wide monitor also helps but dual or triple monitors really help when using any of these streaming softwares! Okay I’m done talking now 😅😅

I have my Mac book pro in the middle sitting on the desk in front. My eCamm is installed on the mac laptop. Do you suggest I record and do livestreams just from my mac laptop screen? Or, can I share all the monitors and migrate (via HDMI) the eCamm Modules off of the mac and onto the big PC monitors and work from there?

  • @HigherEdutech
    @HigherEdutech 2 роки тому +9

    You can definitely use NDI with OBS.
    Here's something that OBS has (via a plugin) that is truly mystical. You can set a video *filter* that assigns a virtual cam to any source or scene. That's in addition to the virtual camera that you can assign to the active scene. This means that when you are in Zoom or Skype, you have multiple virtual cameras from OBS available.
    OK, here's the kicker: you can do the same *with NDI,* which I now use instead of a virtual camera. So when I teach classes via Zoom, I set my Zoom video to a fixed OBS scene (using a dedicated NDI output filter), and use the NDI studio monitor to create a window of the main OBS ouput. When I want to screen share to my class, I share the Studio Monitor window. My students see my OBS output (at 1080p) as a shared screen in Zoom, while my Zoom camera is unchanged.

    • @tombuck

    I think the major issue with Ecamm Live is still, that it is limited to Mac, so it would not be the option to pick in a lot of situations, eventhough it looks good.
    There is one thing that should have been mentioned: OBS has a NDI plugin as well. I have been using it for quite some time and it is totally stable. You can setup OBS as a NDI source or sink and I have been using this in a dual PC setup for streaming using a Linux machine for video encoding and a windows machine for content production.
    It would also work for video transmission between Ecamm and OBS, if you need both applications in a streaming setup for any reason.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 роки тому

      OBS has gotten incredibly powerful, and I love that they keep adding more and more features to it. As mentioned in the video, I think Ecamm being Mac-only is really a strength since developing for a single operating system has allowed them to make it incredibly stable and reliable (much moreso than OBS in my experience- at least on Mac).

    Hi Tom!
    I watched the entire episode. I was hoping for some kind of lead in to the use of the ATEM, mini pro/ATEM mini pro ISO with eCam.
    Based on your experience, can you use the roadcaster pro ii, ATEM mini pro ISO in combination through E Cam?
    I currently use 3 different camera views and my desktop computer as input into the ATEM. I have an output to a large TV monitor for all of the flow/scenes. ATEM is connected into one of my USB ports for direct recording into my computer.
    I use my roadcaster for all of the audio sequencing. It is connected to my computer through another USB port. I record the audio as a separate file.
    I use both recordings and input them into final cut pro. I typically use the switching for posting on social media sources. Occasionally do post editing with the individual recorded files.
    I hope the comment isn’t overly confusing. The ultimate question is, can I use both devices and direct record/live stream through eCam?
    I look forward to your feedback… Cheers!

      The short answer is yes you can use the ATEM and RCP with Ecamm. I like to connect them separately like you have yours already and then select the ATEM as my video source and the RCP as my audio source (I usually add a 4 frame delay in Ecamm to keep everything in sync).

    Tom,
    A question about those who are camera shy, or have a ‘face for radio,’ and disable (turn off) their camera:
    Q) How to create a Host or Guest Avatar (similar to those which appear in StreamYard or evmux when the camera is disabled / turned off) with a blinking circle to denote the Host/Guest is talking?
    - Note: One developer suggested putting an image in front of the camera. Well, that was a ridiculous, bordering on the outrageous, solution-to say the least!
    - Note: It’s already understood a file-name.png could be placed on the screen and ‘transition’ in/out. That, however, is ‘not’ a solution-as it completely negates the StreamYard or evmux -type experience (i.e., how the audience or Guests know who is talking).
    Any suggestions?

      I run my ATEM into Ecamm and it works great. I love it because it's so easy to switch sources, but if you're using Ecamm it's also 100% unnecessary. Both of your Sonys will work via USB and then will show up as separate sources in Ecamm. The a7IV specifically has an awesome webcam mode. You might have already seen this, but once you connect it via USB it automatically pops up a dialogue that lets you select "streaming" as your option and then you can do full 1080 over USB.

    I just wanted to see how ecamm looked, hence clicked on the video. No free license for ecamm is the only this that has discouraged me. Not everyone starts to earn within 14 days of their free trial. Also, after years of using OBS, I find that obs plugins are really really powerful, once you actually start using them. I have a raspberry pi hq camera which I use as a webcam but the 6mm lens on it had a fisheye effect on it. I discovered that you can actually “code” your own filters on obs using a plugin, and a basic algorithm solved the fisheye problem. It’s basically a windows vs linux kind of a thing I guess. One is easier to use while the other is just more personalised/customisable.
