But again, services vary, so if something that can be accessed is cheaper in the long run, then there's not much of a motivation to pay for something that I can get for free (Music & Video Downloading via third party programs for example, pirated or bought a one time price, no subscription license though for example). So in terms of discord, while it may be tempting to use Nitro because of boosting servers, I just didn't bother with it and used to upload 8MBs files before they increased it to 25MBs in 2022 (or was it 2023 I forget).

The average discord user is the exact reason that I almost entirely avoid joining any public server. Not only are there creeps you have to worry about, there's A LOT of people on Discord that are just downright unsocialized weirdos and have no idea how to reasonably interact with and behave around others. Those people exist on every platform, but I'm not sure exactly what it is about Discord that seems to attract them with such frequency.

That age calculation is quite concerning honestly. At first it sounds like a good idea, since the info is never displayed, as it could legitimately help slow down the spread of CSAM, but the other edge of this sword is that it could easily misfire on quite a lot of scenarios. Just off the top of my head: - Roleplayers, if they ever decide to RP using a character who is a minor (there are perfectly normal reasons someone would do this, that majority of RP is NOT ERP.) - Individuals who experience age regression, which is a genuine mental condition that is diagnosable. - Age gap relationships (I'm talking about consenting adults here, do not fucking twist my words) like, I want to believe that they would take all those messages into account and look at context, but I'm not confident they'd do that, and this could lead to some concerning scenarios that could bring real harm to real individuals.Like yeah, it's "just" discord, but for better or worse, there are a lot of people for whom a significant part of their social life is on Discord. Stereotypes aside (let's have some _goddamn empathy_ here), this obviously includes a lot of autistic and otherwise mentally Not Fully Okay people. I can easily forsee these AI features forcibly breaking people apart and destroying a lot of relationships (platonic or otherwise, as dramatic as this sounds) through unrecoverable bans.

If anyone wants a example on how hashing works here you go: First lets start with a very basic hashing algorithm for words, we can go threw each character and find the letter in the alphabet, so "a" would become 1 "b" 2 and so on. So if we wanna do a word like "hello" we do this: h > 8 e > 5 l > 12 l > 12 o > 15 Then we can some up the numbers and get are hash: 8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52 So are hash for "hello" becomes 52. And this hash can't decrypted! 52 could be "hello" or it could be "ooog" or any other number of things. So if we wanted to scan for the word "hello" but for some reason wouldn't want to save the word "hello" we would just hash the words and check if they are equal to 52. This is a very basic example in the real algorithms they use the outputs are usually unique so it rarely false flags. Now instead of words we could use images and there you go! So for a image we could just convert each pixel into its RGB values then run the same algorithm.
The issue, is that it creates the artwork based off that, the artists work; if i doesn't have data from that artist work, it womt have that artists style. The data is being used without consent. If they were using random, black and white images with spots, the AI would only be able to create those spots.

If things aren't end to end encrypted in a way the company cannot read the messages themselves i assume it's stored and analyzed and sold and what not. Even if it is, then I trust them more but still expect them to potentially do bad stuff until proven otherwise e.g. court cases where they literally cannot hand over info because they aren't able to even when asked.
Of course they're playing the CSAM card.. Even if they're actually doing something about it (they have a lot of work to do still then) they're just going to play that card for all the other unrelated stuff they want to do as well, like this. As a reminder, the "don't post this image on discord" attack a few months ago is due to the PhotoDNA database pin-pointing a "harmless" screenshot as part of a CSAM video. The chances of a false positive with PhotoDNA is extremely low, especially since the database is not just massive but highly detailed to catch even a no-context screenshot from a known video. Also lol at twitter for not even using free software to scan for CSAM
The fact that this happened in the first place is already reason enough for Discord to be receiving a hefty fine. European law says this is very very very very very very not okay. And I am piiiiiisssseeeddddddd

It really isn’t. They all do it. Treat everything that isn’t end-to-end encrypted sent through online services as wholly public. “Wholly public” as in “i am okay with my parents, employer, police and the lord himself reading this”.
What you get for not using an e2e encrypted service. I recommend SimpleX if you want some options tho. It should be pretty simple to figure out and it's opensource :p
The age/gender thing may also be for the AI grooming detector, to see if an underage person is chatting with an overage person, and then gender can help (i.e. old man talking to very young girl). This may be another use of it.

This is such a complex topic ethically. I obviously dont like the idea of human reviewers looking at private messages that have been false flagged, but im also for catching predators. We really have to ask ourselves where we draw the line in how invasive security systems should be. Also, discord really does need to disclose more clearly (not burried into some terms of service document) what data they have access to and who can access it.

I mean, I'd've gladly just told them if they'd asked. This is worse for both parties, Discord gets less accurate data and I have my (already practically nonexistent) privacy invaded even more. Sure, they might get a bunch of junk data but wouldn't they get a lot of that anyway? I doubt that these algorithms are 100% accurate.

That age calculation is quite concerning honestly. At first it sounds like a good idea, since the info is never displayed, as it could legitimately help slow down the spread of CSAM, but the other edge of this sword is that it could easily misfire on quite a lot of scenarios. Just off the top of my head:
- Roleplayers, if they ever decide to RP using a character who is a minor (there are perfectly normal reasons someone would do this, that majority of RP is NOT ERP.)
- Individuals who experience age regression, which is a genuine mental condition that is diagnosable.
- Age gap relationships (I'm talking about consenting adults here, do not fucking twist my words)
like, I want to believe that they would take all those messages into account and look at context, but I'm not confident they'd do that, and this could lead to some concerning scenarios that could bring real harm to real individuals.Like yeah, it's "just" discord, but for better or worse, there are a lot of people for whom a significant part of their social life is on Discord. Stereotypes aside (let's have some _goddamn empathy_ here), this obviously includes a lot of autistic and otherwise mentally Not Fully Okay people. I can easily forsee these AI features forcibly breaking people apart and destroying a lot of relationships (platonic or otherwise, as dramatic as this sounds) through unrecoverable bans.

If anyone wants a example on how hashing works here you go:
First lets start with a very basic hashing algorithm for words, we can go threw each character and find the letter in the alphabet, so "a" would become 1 "b" 2 and so on. So if we wanna do a word like "hello" we do this:
h > 8
e > 5
l > 12
l > 12
o > 15
Then we can some up the numbers and get are hash:
8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52
So are hash for "hello" becomes 52. And this hash can't decrypted!
52 could be "hello" or it could be "ooog" or any other number of things. So if we wanted to scan for the word "hello" but for some reason wouldn't want to save the word "hello" we would just hash the words and check if they are equal to 52. This is a very basic example in the real algorithms they use the outputs are usually unique so it rarely false flags. Now instead of words we could use images and there you go! So for a image we could just convert each pixel into its RGB values then run the same algorithm.

The issue, is that it creates the artwork based off that, the artists work; if i doesn't have data from that artist work, it womt have that artists style. The data is being used without consent. If they were using random, black and white images with spots, the AI would only be able to create those spots.

If things aren't end to end encrypted in a way the company cannot read the messages themselves i assume it's stored and analyzed and sold and what not.
Even if it is, then I trust them more but still expect them to potentially do bad stuff until proven otherwise e.g. court cases where they literally cannot hand over info because they aren't able to even when asked.

As a reminder, the "don't post this image on discord" attack a few months ago is due to the PhotoDNA database pin-pointing a "harmless" screenshot as part of a CSAM video.
The chances of a false positive with PhotoDNA is extremely low, especially since the database is not just massive but highly detailed to catch even a no-context screenshot from a known video.
Also lol at twitter for not even using free software to scan for CSAM

Treat everything that isn’t end-to-end encrypted sent through online services as wholly public. “Wholly public” as in “i am okay with my parents, employer, police and the lord himself reading this”.
What you get for not using an e2e encrypted service. I recommend SimpleX if you want some options tho. It should be pretty simple to figure out and it's opensource :p

The age/gender thing may also be for the AI grooming detector, to see if an underage person is chatting with an overage person, and then gender can help (i.e. old man talking to very young girl). This may be another use of it.

This is such a complex topic ethically. I obviously dont like the idea of human reviewers looking at private messages that have been false flagged, but im also for catching predators. We really have to ask ourselves where we draw the line in how invasive security systems should be. Also, discord really does need to disclose more clearly (not burried into some terms of service document) what data they have access to and who can access it.
