- Discord has revolutionized the internet. Gone are the days of Discord bots. Welcome to the era of Discord apps.
Yep. There's a video about how Discord changed the name of bots to apps. However this isn't 10 minutes and 37 seconds of yap. Because it turns out there are SOME valid reasons for this change (and there is also a real reason that makes me question the mental state of Discord)
On the other hand though, there are a handful of new discord experiments that are coming out for bots. And these beta features will improve Discord bots/apps and give them more tools to make our lives a bit easier (with good formatting).
Oh and a viewer also found a bug that allows you to crash everyone's Discord...

4:54 This isn't actually the case. You could always use buttons outside of embeds, it's just that people tended to use embeds. The actual change here is inline buttons, which means you can have them in the middle of a message, instead of at the bottom.

Keeping a tally of stuff discord is doing thats downright stupid:
- Not removing "Join Servers for You" permission
- Letting bots be named "Discord" and "Discord Support"
"Error: Application name cannot contain 'discord'"
- Not stopping fake links
This one drives me nuts. They've already stopped you from sticking sneaky things in there like invisible characters, and you can't put an http(s) url in. But literally all you have to do is take that part off and it works lmao. Everyone saw this coming

Changing the bot's name to 'apps' definitely won't be confusing at all when you remember the mobile and desktop apps exist
They were always called "Apps" technically. You have to made an app on the developer portal, then you add a bot user to said app. Now that there are slash commands, you don't always need to add the bot user to your server to use the apps slash commands. Some apps don't even need a bot user to provide slash commands. If all you're doing is responding to slash commands, your app/bot doesn't even need to be in the server as a user. Also the use of "applications" when referring to giving another developer access to your API isn't uncommon. Twitch, Google, Spotify, and Microsoft all also do it. Someone authorizes your app, then your app can do stuff on their behalf
It will say "Discord for iOS [APP] to continue please enter your pass-word"
Plus in forum channel threads, the person who started the thread is called APP.

wow, I can imagine some guy sitting in the localization office and saying, “Hey, why don’t we change “бот” to “приложение” in russian localization", and then after an hour of testing, he is like “we screwed up. change it back to "бот".
i saw screenshots of bots having "прл" tag
they used it to shorten that thing but it turned into a random set of letters
just imagine this: bot first gets renamed to "application", then it gets shortened to "apl"

Take it from a developer _(not of discord; of other things)_ - changing the name of fields and variables can be a huge pain in the bot. Er, butt.
Seriously though, making a change to an internal variable (rather than displayed text) can be such a pain, since if you miss even one corresponding change elsewhere in your code that can break a lot of stuff.

@@_kitaes_ Not really, if more parts of the css files (yes, files, plural) use it in other selectors, you can end messing up the app. Plus you would need to update the documentation. It's just not a "one change".
Also it's better that you don't change anything if it is not broken for no reason.
Changing the name of bots to apps is like changing twitter to X.
But, well at least Discord had more reason to do it.
Overall good changes for bots- apps at least.
... I'm gonna keep calling them bots.

Ooh, whisperspace. Tumblr has long been the only platform that had decent whisperspace (talking in the tags). This still isn't as good as that, but it's better than most other platforms I can think of.
8:12 This isn't the fault of the user, but rather Microsoft (as far as you can get with victim blaming at least). As you mentioned the form has a warning to not submit a password, however there is no indication from Microsoft that the "single use code" is a password, simply that it can be "used with your account" which sounds a lot like a verification code.

I don't think discord cares much about proper localization. I once submitted a report about translation mistake in Nitro theme name and it took them 6 MONTHS to respond. Quality of translation worsened significantly once Discord moved from community translation to some small group which you can't contact with other than through the white page of doom and gloom. Some strings take literally years to be corrected.
It seems translators don't use the product they translate, because most of mistakes I saw can be easily spotted if you use Discord regularly, which is typical for community, but it seems the context given to translators is too narrow to make the changes consistent with each other.
Discord still uses "kbps" in Swedish despite this not being how it's formatted in Swedish. "Account Standing" is misunderstood as "account standing up". Still several places in Discord using "Apr 9, 2024" in all locales even though only one locale is using that format and the rest is either "9 April 2024" or "2024 April 9".
@@Liggliluff Also when they revamped client icons they changed threads' icon from something resembling forum threads, to threads as in sewing, but at the same time they translated it as "Branches" in Ukrainian localization. The only other option where it would sound somewhat natural would be to translate as lit. "Current"/"Stream". If dogfooding was a norm in the localization team, I think this would've been communicated internally way back when this changes occured.

The Apps thing makes sense on a functionality standpoint. I think what they are trying to do is transition away from the schema of what a bot was (basically automated chat manager), making it instead like an add-on for slack or twitch. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future they added app hosting services, and customizable dashboard tabs for each of the apps.

I personally would love to see a server stats app with google analytics level functionality, or a moderator dashboard with an easy to access to the ban words list, messages needing review, or possibly an event manager with functionalities like EventBrite
PS: This is an optimistic outtake on the situation, who knows where this is going.

There's a funny yet stupid thing with shortening russian word "ПРИЛОЖЕНИЕ" (application). Firstly, I guess they wanted to shorten it like everything else.
So what they did? "ПРЛ".
Three letters like APP? Yes.
Actually means something? No. It's just a random nonsense of lettters. I could never realize that "ПРЛ" is short "ПРИЛОЖЕНИЕ"! Not because I'm stupid, but cuz it doesn't make any sense.

Dang bro, I realized it like 10-20 days ago when I tried to create my own bot. I thought something wrong with my bot but nah, it's just discord decide to change word "BOT" into "APP" which is sounds really stupid to me. However, I can understand discord that he force to change it to not anger his community and this is, a pretty nice move. Also I will be super happy if my bot can send message *after* the image, this feature would be cool. Thanks discord and NTTS for giving us information and creating tools for our comfort

The media gallery is actually extremely useful. I was recently developing a ticket bot that would send transcripts in JSON files but also some ticket information in an embed and the file currently displays above the embed which is quite confusing for the user.

I love how they do all this instead of just making a thing where bots/apps can't use "Discord" as a name. The program's already got a thing where it changes your four digit tag if you change your username to that cause you can't have your username and four digit tag being the same thing for some reason.
When I first saw they’re changing bot name I instantly thought of ways scammers will be able to scam people more with it. Because some people won’t know app means it’s a bot.
btw that beta limit of 25 members for user Apps has been updated to 200 members 3 days ago. They just have not updated the UI and documentations.

Calling it app is better since bots traditionally used to mean a mechanical electronic instrument for repetitive task

Also if you change language to russian then if you hover over :check_mark: БОТ then you will see "Подтверждённое приложение" which means "Verified app"
