That moment when you realize the "American War of Independence" was really a British civil war....
Adversary American, of course it was a British civil war between two British factions on British territory, wasn’t exactly two country’s going to war was it
Adversary American by your own logic your American civil war wasn’t a civil war as the Americans only fought on the side of the union, and not the confederacy therefore it couldn’t be an American civil war
A revolution is just a civil war that was won by the rebels
Dude! Already the real life version sounds WAY cooler than the what is taught in classrooms. Also it makes sense that it would be more like a spy thriller rather than a majestic Tolkien-esque horse ride!
I mean it was not really cool back then.. Anybody could have died from the British
Actually, another thing to note here is that thanks to the epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Paul Revere is often credited as the sole rider who alerted the colonies that the British were coming. Yet, despite this tale, there were many riders who went out the night of April 18 and in the years following, warning the colonists of the approach and movement of the British forces. Four men and one woman made late night rides, alerting the early Americans of what dangers lay ahead. They were Paul Revere, Samuel Prescott, Israel Bissell, William Dawes, and Sybil Ludington. Revere actually also had the shortest ride out of all the riders, On the night of April 18, 1775, Joseph Warren sent Revere to send the signal to Charlestown that the British troops were on the move. Revere rode through northern Boston, through what is now Medford, Somerville, and Arlington warning the American patriots about the enemy's movement. Israel Bissell had the longest ride as he rode for four days and six hours along the Old Post Road, covering a total of 345 miles in that time. Hell, even Sybil Ludington rode a longer distance than Revere did; Sybil, at the young age of sixteen, would make a journey double to that of Revere (totaling 40 miles). So basically Paul Revere became a pop culture icon thanks to Longfellow.
thank you; i have shivers of delight. (i'm not being sarcastic; that was beautiful. thank you.)
Pretty much the sole reason that Revere got the credit was that his name fit the rhyme structure.
Samuel Albro
Yep! Cause the title “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” sounds a whole hell of a lot better than “The Midnight Ride of Israel Bissell”
Wow I didn't know all of that.....cool
"Listen my children, and you will hear
of the midnight ride of Sybil Luddington"
And also he wasn’t the only midnight rider. And he didn’t make it to Concord. And his goal was to warn concord, not Lexington and concord- Lexington was just one of thre towns he passed, and one that was able to assemble a defense against the British. Still important and dope tho, you didn’t ruin Paul revere at all.
Let's not forget the women either what about Sybil Ludington.
right on, prince :)
He's ruining the myth.
i wonder why paul was so remembered compared to the other midnight riders though?
Dr. Prescott wasn't even meant to make the ride either Dawes and Revere were the planned riders, Prescott joined them when he heard the news... that's right Revere's ride would have never succeeded if not for a random passerby joining them.
At this point, Adam Conover needs to do a Drunk History.
Yeeeeeessssssss
Oh, geez. I so want to see him smashed and rambling about some historical event I've never heard of.
that would be fun to watch. but understandable if he chooses not too. not everyone likes strong drink..
Yes
That One Guy
Yes!
Next time on Adam Ruins Everything, Adam Ruins the misconception of Vikings and why nobody talks about Varangian Guards. And why lief Erickson is not popular?
1:04 "Are you saying we're coming or you're coming?" I started to laugh before I realized that it wasn't a dirty joke.
Is it me or was she disturbingly similar to Tracer?
You need Jesus XD
Kyrie Jaramillo I failed as a Catholic.
I was expecting a dirty joke when the lady popped out
Revere wasn't even the hero nor the only participant in the ride. It was Revere, Prescott, and Dawes rode out to warn the militia. Revere was captured, and after falling of his horse, Dawes fled back. Samuel Prescott was the only one who made it. REVERE NEVER EVEN REACHED CONCORD.
Almost on the money, but you're missing Sybil Ludington, there were 4 riders, not 3. Made her whole route and circled back home too. So Prescott wasn't the only one who made it either. Here, a reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sybil_Ludington
Piriathy so you just believed a comment on UA-cam?
Also Paul Revere crashed into a tree, was interrogated, and his horse taken away
Did Jerry from Rick and Morty narrate this?
EDDSWORLDMEGAFAN yes. His name is Chris Parnell
He also narrated WordGirl.
No wonder he got it wrong. Jerry sucks.
His voice is like sugary butter in my ears.
EDDSWORLDMEGAFAN if you mean Chris Parnell, then yes he did. He also voices Cyril Figgis in Archer
He actually said “the regulars are out!”
3rd of all he only did the first leg of the ride wich was the shortest we only know his name cause it was easy to rhyme
As I recall, he never ran through the town tellin' people the British were coming. Paul Revere...had a cellphone. He simply looked out the window, stopped the game of charades he was playing with his friends, and called...well, someone. And said the British were coming. That's how it REALLY happened.
There were actually three people not just Paul, I don’t really know the other peoples names but if you search it up you find out for your self
This is Jerry Smith's voice, how fitting for someone who is always wrong
Sybil Ludington rode twice the distance of the male riders. Learned about her in New York history as a child.
Tiffany Ferguson and Paul was captured by the British as well, but escaped.
Tiffany Ferguson Oh my gosh! I was going to comment this! She was also almost half his age!
Tiffany Ferguson twice the distance of paul revere
Cool no one asked
I heard about Sybil Ludington from a Drunk History episode.
Not to mention the fact that Paul Revere was only doing this whole thing for about the last fifth of the ride. Apparently, the actual initiators were either dead or already fighting by the time Paul got to his destination.
Not to mention the actual objectives were to warn VIPs Adams and Hancock that the Redcoats were coming to arrest them, and to warn Concord’s militia that the Redcoats were coming to seize arms. Also Revere was captured, but released because they couldn’t waste time with the arrest. Other riders finished the journey.
Look at my horse, my horse is amazing ♫
A few problems with this:
1: Paul Revere did yell out. But it wasn't through city streets. Lexington was a small town.
2:Paul Revere was not the only rider. He was one of three riders. One of those three were captured.
I remember an episode of time squad where they had help Paul Revere with his horse phobia. It's kinda funny to think about how low the stakes actually were
he is so cute as a lantern and his voice is like of a children's cartoon character
"The red coats are coming!" Was that used??
Yes Connor that way No Connor the other way!
Han Hong OMFG LMAOOOOOOOO
Next time on Adam Ruins Everything, Adam Ruins the misconception of Samurai and explain to us how the real Feudalism Japan works?
How come no matter how heard I search I can't find a full episode of reanimated history anywhere.
Robert Whul (yes the guy who played the reporter in the 89 batman film) did a fantastic piece about the truth behind this event on his special Assume The Position. I recommend checking it out
Nice video.......
Ayyyyy an episode on my birthday.
Does anyone know what time and day this show is on? My DVR won't recognize it.
Lets be honest.......He's not ruining this stuff! It's actually pretty damn helpful
I can't wait to tell my teacher this
Glad the show is coming back 😊😊😊
Sweet! Season three!!!
i need more ruins please
I'm gonna try and watch all 154 videos on the playlist
Paul Revere wasn't the only courier he was just one of a long line of couriers that were spread to ensure the information passed so that one guy wouldn't hold the information if he got captured.
Anyone else caught off guard by Jerry's voice narrating American history
I swear I recognize the narrator... not Adam, but the guy being corrected
I can't believe that in this day and age people still think Paul Revere rode alone...
I like how in the assassins creed games one guy described the war of independence as more of a civil war between the British colleners and the brits back in England
Also, Paul Revere didn't actually warn Lexington and Concord. There were 3 riders who rode to warn Lexington and Concord. Paul and one of the riders got captured while riding but one got though to his destination. The reason Paul Revere is credited for it is because Henry Wadsworth wrote a poem about Paul Revere warning Lexington and Concord. People mistook it for fact and now Paul Revere gets the credit I think.
Paul Revere + Knight Rider = good tv show idea.
You forgot to mention that Paul Revere wasn't the only rider that night
You forgot there were multiple riders, and Paul Revere turned back halfway while a bunch of the other guys made it all the way
Paul Revere wasn't the only rider sending the message. He was more like the first rider who sent out the message. He told other riders who spread word to other riders throughout what is now Boston. His descendants are still alive today. That isn't really relevant here but I think it's neat.
I always thought hes rode around yelling "To Arms!!!"
Also it wasn't one if by land 2 if by sea it was one if by land 2 if by river referring to the Charles river in Boston
Ignoring the fact that Paul was one of the people planning this behind the scenes and was a major part. Also ignoring the fact that he was a humble man and wanted others to have credit as well.
I love this
Hopefully the full version mentions the lady who helped (more than helped)?
History completely forgot about William Dawes as well. He also took part in the midnight ride so it was not just Paul Revere.
Also he didn't get all the way to Concord. He got captured in Lincoln
I remember this mission in ACIII. Connor was basically an uber driver to paul lol
Who is the narrator? He sounds so familiar.
It says TV MA
So I press info on my remote.
The episode is TV PG
uhhhhhh
I'm pretty sure Paul Revere was captured at one point and that William Dawes did most of the work Revere is given credit for
Wasn't there like 3 or 4 people too?
I already knew this
Revere was actually captured instantly.
My childhood...
Not to mention there was actually several riders alongside Revere, one of which was a slave, another was a 16 year old girl. The more you know.
WOAH! Is that Dr. Spaceman?!
"Shut up Jerry"
No idea why, but I lost it when the woman said, "Bang, Bang!"
The dislikes are the critics
I'm pretty this was taught in history, and what Adam is correcting is the easier to digest retellings
And here I thought the entire tale was going to turn out to be fake or something, but it was only a few details of the story that were inaccurate, so it’s not like Revere wasn’t still important on that night or anything
Is that Chris Parnell whose narrating?
I thought he was going to talk about how he didn't ride alone.
I preferred Sarah Palin's version where Paul Revere was riding a horse, yelling, firing shots, and ringing bells all at the same time. This is the version of history I chose to believe because it is funnier.
There were also two others that split off from him to warn other colonies.
For your other "adam ruins history" can you do world history? Like how Cleo wasn't Egyptian? Also the fact that she wasn't killed by an asp/ Also bust the fact that Egyptian pyramids weren't built by slaves. And Julius Caesar didn't invent any Salad?
destroyer22719 the Cleo wasn't Egyptian part is quite difficult to say, because it depends on what's your definition of "Egyptian". Egypt was Hellenised since the Ptolemaic era and practically culturally Greek until the Islamic conquest of the area. So yes, she's Egyptian in a Hellenised Egypt.
I guess you should consider your nationality of your nationality's nation collapsed. But, genetically, she's the same greek people that once existed. In fact, she belongs to a dynasty of greeks. Alexander (the great) was actually one of them.
Michael Panggabean Just because you align with the culture doesn't mean that you share the same genetics. Bosnians and Albanians shared the same culture with the Ottoman Empire... does that make them Turks? Persians shared the same culture with the Arabs, does that make them Arabs? Don't be stupid. Cleopatra was about as Egyptian as a Norwegian was in the 17th century.
Your Average Imperial Guard but what is Egyptian? Are we talking about ethnicity, or genetics, because Egypt has always been a melting pot for millennia. Heck, even what we thought as Egypt was a combination of upper and lower Egypt, with different cultures as well. The Egyptian of today is not even closely related with the Nubians, who lived in lower Egypt.
So let me ask you, what is "Egyptian", then?
Here is another question for you. Without checking the internet, was the last Chinese dynasty Chinese?
Don't slander my f***ing lunch.
1:17 revolutionary war tracer
My ag class is learning about Paul Revere
You can’t fool me Jerry!
this just makes it more badass though
Is that Jerry from Rick and Morty narrating?
I think I heard his voice before.
People be like: Jerry?
I be like: CYRILL!!!
who put up the lanterns?
For an other "Adam ruins everything" can you do something about the redhead, as
for example, to deny the fact that not all redheads are Jewish, Scottish or Irish.
Talk about the historical and / or genetic origins of the DNA that gives that hair color.
I would like to see that in one of the episodes of your series.
And he wasn't the only one, he was part of several.
Revere is the most famous of the midnight riders mainly because of the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Israel Bissell went way further than Revere.
I believe there were 3 people who road telling that the regulars were coming
Wait Adam Ruins Everything is back!
Is that Chris Parnell's voice?
I already knew he said the regulars were coming cause of us history B)!
I love jerry smiths voice actor
Jerry?
1:02 Both English people and England and English people in England spoke "rhotic" in the time of Paul Revere. The Queen's English was only invented during this time period because the bourgeoisie wanted to differentiate themselves from the low class in England during the industrial revolution www.livescience.com/33652-americans-brits-accents.html
So Paul Revere was less a midnight ride and more of a spy thriller intelligence/metal gear solid thing? Cool.
Adam.. You have made the same mistake as my third grade teacher.. His name was Israel Bissell.. Paul Revere did ride, from oxford to Cambridge.. When the civil war was going to break out, an author wrote a story and needed a name.. Of Israel and Paul, he chose to rewrite the story as if it were Paul.. He had a better name to rally the patriotic spirit..There were other riders but Longfellow needed a story to become a legend.. "When the story becomes fact, print the legend"..
I need to go see all my past history teachers and tell them that they basically set me up for failure.
okee Ill just go back to kirby, also nice vid
What about the other riders?
That narrator sounds hella familiar
Word girl?
Wait was that tracer
Why not bring up Revere's criminally incompetent work as head of the artillery at the siege of Fort George?
