Took a ride to the hospital once in an ambulance about 10yrs ago. They billed me $1,200. They charged $10 for one pair of latex gloves, $30 for one pillow case, $17 for one single use packet of neosporin and a lot of ridiculous prices for the things they used on me. I called and told them I couldn't pay that price. Without hesitation they took 50% off the total bill. It's true people these charges are real and outrageously INFLATED!
Took a ride in an ambulance in the province of Ontario, Canada. $45. And the care in the ambulance and at the hospital was all covered by our single payer system. $0.

My first week in Japan I got massively sick and spent two days in the hospital, and it cost a total of $80.
Well I stayed at a hospital because I was puking blood and it was only 3 days...12000 dollars later just wasn't eating or drinking .... because I dont do it to much when I'm sick

How was three days of nursing care, at a living wage, on 80 dollars? That is what they billed you, but my guess is that the total bill was hugely more, and the rest paid by Japanese taxpayers as part of their system. Probably so few visitors get sick that it is more trouble than it is worth to try and collect the full bill many can’t pay.

How else would you have a Congress consisting of a median net worth of $1,008,767 (New York Times, Jan 4th 2014), and 268 our of 534 millionaires? You are aware that Congressional Members are exempt from insider trading requirements, right?
As Adam pointed out, hospitals and insurance companies provide the largest source if lobbying funds in America. If you look at the pattern of testimony in Congress, and then investment by Congressional members, you will see a lot of what would be classified as insider trading schemes in the rest of America.

When my son was discharged from the hospital (for burned feet) they sent me home with a bag of gauze and bandages. When I looked at my bill it was over $200 for the supplies. Luckily insurance covered it but I was dumbstruck that they would charge $200 for stuff that would have costed me $20-$30 at the pharmacy.

As a medical coder for hospitals, focusing on inpatient admissions, I can PROMISE you the charge master is the least of your worries. Adam didn’t even touch on how we can charge you for diagnoses the doctor merely suspects you may have, or how we can move the sequence of diagnosis around to manipulate the reimbursement, or how hospitals have RN’s on staff to retroactively get physicians to add to patient records to increase reimbursement. Really, everyone would be burning down hospitals if you knew how we made your bill

Had to go to an ER out of state. Got a $17,700 bill. My insurance only covered $780. I applied for financial aid directly with the hospital. Got it 100% forgiven, didn't pay a cent. So clearly, they are just trying to gouge people. So insane.
In Canada, any surgery required to save your life is free. Optional Surgeries like plastic surgery cost money though
Edit: Lots of people keep reminding that Canada’s healthcare system has extremely long waiting lines and other shortages. This is true, and it is a huge source of other problems with the system, but I wasn’t originally commenting about whether it has better results, just how the single payer system in Canada works.

well as you know...nothing is "free". i went to canada fishing and i could not believe how expensive EVERYTHING is there. i thought the gas price was like usa for a gallon only to find out it was for a liter!, fishing lures cost 3 or 4 times what they cost in usa, it REALLY blew my mind when i bought a 12 pack of beer and a pack of cigs! lesson learned........stay out of canada, its bad for your wealth.

Most because people still feed on the idea of living the American Dream TM. Their ideology of that completely clouds their perception of reality. And the reality is that America is not a great nation. We've accomplished a lot, sure. We've got a lot of money and power. But overall- we are horribly flawed. Those few things I listed are pretty much all we've got. And we haven't even accomplished as much as many other nations have. We raise our people with an inflated sense of pride for this nation, to a point where no one can stand to be told their nation is sub-par.

I’m a retired nurse. After the last hospital where I worked got Cerner electronic health record system, I discovered an interesting feature in it. I could look at a patient’s medications and see two price amounts. One amount was the purchase price, and the other amount was what the hospital charged the patient. The patient charge was usually somewhere between 25 to 40 times higher than the purchase price.

I'm Canadian and a doctor I used to have had worked in a US hospital. She told me that THEY were told to use different grades of equipment based on how good or bad the person's insurance was. She used the best on everyone!
They do this with vaccines too. People on Medicaid and Medicare get the cheaper made (long shelf life) vaccines.
I think knowing how much we are getting ripped off and nothing being done about it is more frustrating than if we were simply ignorant of it.

I have asthma too, but I live in the UK, and for me, my two inhalers cost roughly £18 together. What they are charging you seems unacceptable by standards this way.

i had gall bladder attack once. went to the hospital.
but i forgot my ID. so i told them my id number.
they took me to a single room with bed.
doctor came 10 minutes later. examined me (i told him it was allready gallbladder) but he wanted to be sure.
they gave me IV with painkillers. and sceduled a sonic examination next day (it was way to late on the evening, so the personnel for the equipment was not on staff)
i would have been offered free food (but since gall bladder attack, no food)
i slept in room alone.
i would have been offered free breakfeast (but gall bladder attack no food) it had cleared completely by then since i fell asleep while under pain killers.
they examined me and confirmed stones in my gall bladder. decided that it was not something they would do anything about unless it would be a often occurrence.
I left the hospital after saying thanks, not signing any papers, arguing prices worrying about debts.
only price i had to pay was the receipt the doctor put up for me on pain medication in case it was to happen again. (which also was very cheap since goverment also covered alot of that)

My dad was hospitalized for almost 9 months last year and had a liver transplant. After his near death encounter, my parents would have been out over a million dollars by now, but we live in Canada, so they paid for 2 ambulance rides worth $75 each instead. I feel awful for Americans who are in hospital, having to skip treatments because of cost. That's awful.
Jessica Kóródy I have been reading these comments and thought the same thing. People are posting how they have been charged $1000+ for basic things. I have had the same things done in Canada and I have never paid for anything.
I know! A LOT of people die because they have to pick paying insurance or rent and food! And if they pay the insurance and get sick they have like a 3 or $4,000 deductible that they have to meet first (and that rate is for the poor people that make like 10 to 15 thousand dollars a year). The food they feed us is poison and healthcare is impossible to afford. Only the elite (rich) get to eat well and can afford health care. All others will die from the system except the really poor they are fully covered . They are killing off the middle class. They are succeeding.
Here in California, my dad got hurt at his construction job by a large boulder falling 30 feet and striking him on the head(luckily was wearing a hardhat so he didn't die)and through procedures, tests, medication etc. he has accumulated over 1.8 million dollars in medical fees. He thankfully has insurance but has still had to pay out of pocket over $30,000. It's absolutely ridiculous. He's still in daily constant pain and has had to skip a few tests because the scan/tests alone would cost him 15k+ because his insurance doesn't cover certain, seemingly very necessary tests.

I came to the USA, and it blows my mind how much of a ripoff everything here in the medical industry is, and that you get insurance with a job, as if you don't need it when you don't have a job. ANOTHER reason that health care is so high is to pay for all the people who don't have it and don't pay for care.
A couple problems with the government is that
1. In order to open a hospital in an area, you must get government approval by providing a documentation of necessity and
2. Hospitals aren't legally required to broadcast their prices where everyone can see them
Essentially, they're granted a competition-free market. If that was taken away, they'd be forced to lower their prices

While I agree, that would require making companies and education facilities to not require a doctor's note and your main doctor to accept walk ins. I don't know how common it is by I tried to do a walking for a doctors note one time and got scolded by the staff there. Until those things change people will need to go to the hospital, urgent care, etc. for something they could take some over the counter medicine for.

Here in Australia we have Medicare which lets us have life saving surgeries for free as long as we pay around $50 a month for the Medicare card

Waiting so long for treatment literally kills.. Don't even dare claim that government is more efficient and productive than the private market

True Story: Received medical bill with an added note. "If uninsured, hospital reduces price by 45%." Bill AFTER discount, roughly 2000 US, Equipment - 600, Doctor Charge - 200, Ambulance - 1200.
Reason: Outside below zero temp for too long. At Hospital, ONLY received blankets, crackers and a Ginger Ale. No, REALLY!
If it was ER in the US, that's a big problem. The law that made it so no one can be turned away from the ER did not implement a way to pay for it. Therefore, as a great number of people do not pay the bill, those who actually do get these ridiculous costs to offset because, without it, ERs wouldn't be able to function.
One time my doctor at a hospital made me take a pregnancy test when I just woke up from being unconscious and I didn't understand what was happening and months later I figure out it cost me $150!! They sell that crap at the dollar tree. And I hadn't had sex in 3 YEARS. I didn't need or want a pregnancy test. They didn't tell me and charged me a ridiculous amount for it. Y'all don't wanna know how much the ending bill was. I would honestly rather die than go to the hospital again

if you’re ever at the hospital and your bill is insanely high, ask for an itemized list of the charges. if they charged you 37 dollars for a bandaid and you ask to see an itemized list of the charges, they’ll take the ridiculous charges off and your bill will go down a TON
3 stitches $2,200 God I'm glad I live in Canada. I cut my hand open with a bandsaw and had to get three stitches and guess what it cost me nothing because I live in Canada.

Johnny Ringo Yeah. I was intubated for an asthma attack once. Four day stay. They charged like $30 for each vial of albuterol sulfate. Ventilator was over 5 grand per night. 30k visit.
An ambulance took my wife to the hospital when she passed out at work. It was two blocks away and they charged us $1100 for just the ambulance bill. The hospital bill charged us $1600 just to tell us she was dehydrated.
I hate hospitals here in America. While the doctors make millions, me and my wife cant even afford to eat because of the hospital bills. I told her to never call the ambulance if something happens to me. Id rather die than pay their corrupt bills

it's funny because I will someday be an EMT I would have to convince people to go to the hospital. I can't wait till I am 18 because then I could just sign a refusal.
They charge us for the doctor, to wait to see the doctor, the ambulance, the medications, the xrays, the hospital room, the blood tests, etc.
We pay ambulance fees in standard taxes, and still have to pay for one if we need it. My insurance charges $300 for an ambulance ride.

You're missing the most important part. The actual policies that were implemented by medical lobbyist money and the names of congress that support it.
elijah mikle your comment doesn't refute anything Jack said. Private services only behave like this when they occupy large portions of market share. Do you know why people complain about "big business"? Because it's big business that actually has the money to have any political clout. They can hire lobbying firms and contribute to super PACs like no other. Big businesses can lobby legislators to errect barriers to market entry which comes in the form of regulation.
Case in point, I can't use my insurance in the state of New York because I'm from Illinois. There is no good reason for this. It simply reduces the amount of suppliers available to any given market. Less suppliers means each individual supplier is more powerful, and when a supplier is more powerful they raise their prices because they can. The inverse of this works too. A fewer amount of buyers means each individual buyer has more power over the people selling them products or services. If you price gouge your customers and your competition is price gouging their customers, there's nowhere for the customers to go to find lower prices. Given enough price elasticity each supplier could in theory keep lowering their prices to syphon more business from the competition but this is only the profitable option when each supplier insists on stealing business from each other. If they don't they can keep their prices high and everyone is richer. Add this on top of administrative costs and malpractice insurance.
In a competitive market raising your prices puts you out of business. In a non-competitive market it makes you more money. Healthcare and health insurance are both staggeringly uncompetitive industries. Bloomberg posted an index showing that the most competitive health insurance markets had at most 5 providers. Consider this and then consider the fact that market consolidation has been occuring in many major American industries. Airlines are another great example. Look up cabotage laws. Same story.

If you want a better funded NHS, you want to stay in the EU.

I'm a year away from graduating with an MD, and I have to say that this is a topic we are utterly unfamiliar with. We are just taught to provide the best standard of care for our patients and let the MBA's running the hospital deal with the finances. I wish doctors were better prepared to advocate for our patients financially too. And since I know someone is going to say it, doctors are overpaid in this country compared to other countries (where education is free) but it is on par with the fact that most of us graduate with 6 figures of debt. It's clearly not paying doctors and nurses (who are straight up underpaid) that makes healthcare so expensive.
I you are earning minimum wages with a college degree what the heck was your degree? Post-secondary education should be about career preparation and training, not school for schools sake. Look, I'm all for being as educated and informed as you can be, but you don't need to go to college to get that.

The (American) hospital is the absolute worst place to get treatment. It's designed for EMERGENCIES, not for things that need to be planned out ahead of time. It costs more than going to a specialist, and often times, the surgeons at the ER aren't as good as specialists because they specialize in being an ER surgeon - someone trained to handle emergencies like heart attack and stab wounds. If someone is poor and can't afford to see a regular doctor for ahead-of-time treatment and instead they go to the ER, they are getting care that is more expensive. And if they don't pay for it, they get hounded by people on the phone who try to collect money from them, and if those people can't collect money, the expense goes somewhere else. This is a very inefficient system.

For example, in some states, insurance plans must cover at least 60 benefits. And many are benefits are things like massage therapy and acupuncture. This makes things more expensive in 2 ways.
1. More benefits=it insurance costs more... duh
2. A new insurance company may not be able provide coverage for 60 different benefits, so won’t be able to have any customers. This lowers supply- which then raises costs, which insurance monopolies are able to rake in.

Emmily The Engineer She needed antibiotics. I have to see a doctor for tonsil infections once or twice a year to get antibiotics. It costs about $250 for a 5 minute doctor visit and the prescriptions I need with no insurance. It was so bad once that the doctor yelled for a nurse to bring in a roller bed to admit me to the hospital immediately, but I was able to whisper "I don't have insurance", so he can canceled the bed and sent me on my way with a bag of free sample antibiotics. The problem I have is that it is a reoccurring thing and can't afford to get them cut out, and the doctors refuse to listen to me when I tell them that the first batch of antibiotics rarely works and that I will have to come back for more a couple days after they run out, so it costs me another $250 because I have to pay for the dr. appointment again for the same problem in the same month. Obama Care would cost me way more per year than $500, so I opt out and just pay in cash.

No kidding... the US is having a huge issue with people not entering the medical field (most doctors/surgeons came from other countries), and people want to treat medical care like it is a luxury. It is a trade skill that is far more specialized than anything else, and it costs a fortune to have enough people train you to become competent enough to be employed and reliable.

Had CT scans, blood work, tests, and referrals to other doctors. My son was born in a hospital and was in the NIC unit for a week. Total bills received: $0. I live in Canada.

It won't be easy, but considering most people oppose lobbying I think we can win it.

This is not caused by freedom and capitalism. Freedom and capitalism is what healthcare had in the early 1900's, where doctors charged patients directly at rates that were only a small margin above cost, like any product in a competitive market. Did you miss the part where the hospital lobbies congress more than almost anybody? This is caused by government interference in the free market in a way counter to the best interest of the people. Since you're probably going to be confused on this point, it is possible for government to interfere with the free market in a way that aligns with the best interest of the people - utilities and roads are a good example of this.

Jack Ashton Their taxes are much lower than they are in Ontario. Free healthcare here and 13% tax on everything. Some states have as little as 4% tax, last I checked.
The only idiots that are against it are people who grew up during the Cold War or are brainwashed by parents who did. They don't know the difference between socialism and communism, it's a bit of a nightmare, they think if we have free healthcare that overnight we'll have a dictator, it's stupid. Those people though really make no difference whatsoever. Giant corporations like Big Pharma, medical supply companies, etc. who sell their products at 1000x the cost of production in our current systems have the politician's ears by giving them a crapload of money via lobbying a.k.a. bribery. Also, those same companies will offer politicians that help them continue making absurd amounts of money off the backs of dying people very cushy "jobs" after they're out of office. 7, 8 figure salaries where they really don't actually do any work. Again, legal bribery. What the majority of the American population wants and how our laws reflect that are incredibly different. Our laws are much more of a reflection of what a handful of billionaires want.
Take recreational marijuana, or medical at the very least. The majority of Americans either support those, or at the very least are indifferent. The tobacco and alcohol industries are incredibly against it and donate billions to keep it illegal, and add in pharmaceutical companies when medical is involved. Any seemingly nonsensical thing for the so-called greatest country in the world can be traced to a few incredibly rich people who need to be richer. Also, we as a country have incredibly short attention spans, so unless it's currently negatively affecting us we tend to forget about our shitty systems. So Congress purposefully drag their feet and make any potential change take so long that by the time a bill comes to a vote no one really cares anymore, and usually the bill is completely different from what it started as so barely anything changes, then opponents of the bill use that to "prove" that the "change" wasn't effective.

Of course they would be at first, it's not like one bill would all of a sudden make our healthcare system perfect. Getting money out of politics first is arguably more important. As far as going against having single payer, that's a non-argument though, if that is what you're implying (not saying you are). That's like saying "we already tried making murder illegal, but people kept murdering, so it might as well go back to being legal". It's a step in the right direction though, and we can afford it. Like, look at Paul Ryan saying how Sanders' new bill will cost an estimated $32 trillion over the next 10 years. That's his argument against it, that it's expensive. He conveniently left out that our current system will cost an estimated $40 trillion over the next 10 years. So again, the argument against it is a non-argument.

Sweden (I don't live there but I know this) also has free hospitals but the people pay higher taxes as a result.

Actually Zumy, the US healthcare system isn't actually a very good one. Swedish, German and UK healthcare systems are among the best in the world, US is still below the top 25. Their greed for profits rather than results screws over the patients. The US has long since stopped with major innovations that benefit the average patient, we do most of that here in Europe.
