Paul Revere actually became famous because someone wrote a poem that became famous and none of the other rider's name's rhymed well enough
If that is true, then why didn't Adam say anything about it? Cuz he is a dick, that is why
@@spelareNR14 He couldn't fit in I guess.
Nisse Elmquist maybe he did 'cause this ain't the thing
@@spelareNR14 More like because his research team didn't supply this for him.
I actually came down to the comments just to point out this same fact. I was surprised Adam didn't mention it. Glad someone else knew that one as well.
I live in Concord! My family often goes walking past Paul Reveres capture site. The revolution was a large part of our curriculum in school and we were taught that Paul Revere likely said "The redcoats are coming" or "The lobster backs are coming" since those were both common nicknames for the British soldiers at the time.
Indeed. Regulars, Red Coats, Lobster backs...all those woulda been the more likely thing that he was taught about.
Dude is it true their are Irish in boston
I remember watching Liberty's Kids on PBS back in the day and even they showed that it wasn't just Revere and they said stuff like "the regulars are coming"
Does that make the reveloutionaries crabs
@Aaron Joy's music & books That's Mandela effect!
Adam failed to mention my favorite rider: Sybil Ludington. She alerted militia forces in villages of Putnam County, New York and Danbury, Connecticut, to the approach of the British regular forces on April 26, 1777. That’s more than twice the distance attributed to Revere.
Yes! I hate when she is left out.✌🖖
*someone does something important in history*
Adam: I'm gonna ruin this man's whole career
You speak words of wisdom, egg
More like:
*someone does something important in history*
Adam: ACTUALLY...
I've never seen a more perfect meme...bravo
Well...Yeah? its literally in the Title.
No its "im about to correct ur whole carrier"
They don’t mention it here, but Revere became so famous and associated with the ride because Longfellow wrote a poem about him in 1860 that credited him with the whole mission
najhoant They mention it in the full episode, though... along with Paul Revere’s actual accomplishments.
they do mention it though later
Haven't seen the episode, but I get the feeling they mention that later. It's not like Adam to skip over the explanation of why a myth persists.
I was about to ask why Revere was the one who became the historical figure, but I decided to check the comments first. Thanks!

It’s because it’s a tv show
I think what needs to be remembered is that the revolution was largely about economic interest. The famous tax on tea was not really a tax in the modern sense, it was a monopoly imposed on the colonies by the east India company. The merchant class and craftsmen, which included people like Revere and John Hancock, opposed this because it harmed them economically (Hancock was the richest man in Boston and personally lost a lot of money from the cheap tea being sent to the colonies by the East India company, and many other merchants and craftsmen wanted protective tariffs to help their growing industries). These people were mostly in the north, hints why the rebellion began in Boston.
Also important to note is that the British weren't being greedy like we paint them as. They fought a very expensive war and felt that it only fair the colonists who benefited from it the most should help pay for it. Colonists were in fact paying much lower taxes than citizens back in England even with the initial taxes Parliament imposed, but the New England colonies were going through financial troubles so the colonies were hurt by taxes that would have otherwise been harmless, not to mention it really started to get colonists mad about having no say in Parliament.
But still that didn't directly lead to the Revolution, that was a last resort after all other attempts to negotiate failed.
@@ichijofestival2576 When you look at both sides, it feels more like a tragedy that it happened. The British were trying to raise money in a way they thought would be harmless, not realizing the impacts their actions would have on colonies across the Atlantic because they chose the exact wrong time to implement them.
The colonies pushed back out fear this violation of their rights would be the first of many, but their resistance to the government authority caused the British to fear a rebellion. Their push back when the colonies were just trying to appeal through legal means help create a real rebellion.
The entire war started because a bunch of things all happened at once that on their own would have either been harmless, or at least not had a huge impact on the colonies as a whole.
@@dragonstormx That's basically a lot of history in a nutshell. Many tragedies or even good things happen because of the right (or wrong) combination of factors happened around the same time.
@@dragonstormx it was a snowball effect.
And both parties were convinced the other wanted to harm them
@@jacques4703 Yup.
This story might be even better than the original. A silent work of a well organized army, spreading quickly the news about the incoming rivals
Indeed. The original was good for a poem, but this has something a lot more interesting story of Paul and the others having a well coordinated event and planning. So really this isn't RUINING Paul REvere's image...it just makes it less silly of a way to think that he was able to go do all this stuff in a single night. It actually shows how smart the Revolutionary army was.
Dejay Page Finally someone who respects Paul Revere and history.
Jack Archer when you gotta form a plan with the squad
That’s a very good point! I agree.
What Paul Revere should be remembered for was his contribution as a silversmith. He engraved a famous depiction of the "Boston Massacre."
2:55 Apparently every British girl wants to be tracer.
I'M ALREADY TRACER
Tony Flamingo What about Widowmaker!
JFK I'm already widowmaker
Haha shut up
Yeh also she's Australian apparently
Pff, this guy thinks he's ruining everything for me when actually he's just feeding me knowledge and information and making me smarter!
And usually it's not anything surprising, like finding out history is twisted to be more palatable? SHOCKER. We literally see that happening right now. I like knowing the truth. I think it's sad how upset some people get. Finding out you had the wrong information shouldn't cause cognitive dissonance but it seems like it does for people who just can't accept that much of what we're told is a lie 🤷🏻♀️
@@LunarEleven It's always hard to accept reality when you've belived something for so long, not always easy for some people to change their minds
Welcome to the club
Adam uno reverse
Adam you translated to animated quite well.
True
“Put down your smartphone” but I’m using my smartphone to watch this video
You do know that this is made for TV show audience not for UA-cam right? CH is just promoting ARE on its UA-cam channel
Memo Memo doesnt change much.
“You’re gonna tell me you’re not French with hair and clothes like that?”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I love French jokes, but they annoy the crap out of my French roommate XD
DOES ANYONE THINK THE NARRATOR SOUNDS LIKE JERRY FROM RICK AND MORTY!?!?!?
UPDATE: he is
I think the little jingle at the end sounds like the luftbaloon song
Narrator: “put down your cell phones and watch”
Me: *puts down cellphone*
Narrator: *silence*
Me: “oh right I’m watching this on a phone”
I was gonna type that then I saw this
Stole my joke 2 years ago
That me all right
I was thinking the same thing
I'm kind of disappointed they didn't mention Sybil Ludington. I haven't seen the full episode, so I don't know if she appears in it or not, but it's still a cool story. Basically, a teenage girl did almost the exact same thing as Revere, except for longer and by herself.
I was about to say that! She could have at least gotten a mention.
Serena Koehler Well, like I said, she might've been mentioned, but I would understand if she wasn't. She might've been cut for time, or otherwise looked over in favor of facts that discredit what happened directly, rather than discredit the fact that what Revere did was unique.
There is a statue of Sybil Ludington not far from where I grew up in upstate New York, so I've known about her for quite some time! The statue always looked like it was foaming at the mouth, though, so when I was young I was convinced that she was just some crazy girl who rode around on horseback and hit people with a stick.
Suho1004 niiiiiice.
well he did talk about a slave who could read & write who went undercover in the british army to learn their plans & eventually won freedom for all his help
Regulars? So 18 century way of saying normies.
yeah I was going to say it was probably short for 'regulators'
@@ichijofestival2576 Oh boy I just love getting destroyed on the internet, great stuff.
At least they are not weebs
XD okay
Iriako Ishikawa intellectual attacking?
So now Jerry is helping Morty with his history project?
Wow, now that you say it, image if this WAS Jerry helping Morty. It would be so awesome
Yeah and Rick shouted at Jerry
Imagine that
he sounds exactly like jerry
JkMusic Thats because it IS Jerry
The real story is much better there.. more boring and logical in ways, since it's not out oif the ordinary for them.. but one special hero, is too movie-like which makes it even more boring and annoying to listen to. Seeing a proper functioning plan with many riders and secrecy, is far more interesting I think. Even if it is more logical and less obnoxious.
Agreed.
Even outside archer Cryil Figgis can't catch a break.
Andrew Carrillo lol 😂😂😂
at at least dr. spaceman is doing something else
Andrew Carrillo I knew it was him
Speaking as a European with a genuine interest in history: I had never heard of Paul Revere before this video.
I absolutely love this new style of Adam Ruins Everything. Amazing. Keep on doing it this way, please.
Paul Revere is my favorite Assassin’s Creed character
TO THE RIGHT CONNOR
Yes! This is exactly where we need to be!
SirBlot lol, I didn’t even see the movie. I’m talking about Assassin’s Creed 3 (the videogame).
That entire sequence made me want to kill myself

If i put down my phone i cant watch this video
Hawichii yes you can just put your face over the screen
It was filmed for TV
This video is for computers and phones th

Me: I don’t know man, seems pretty counterintuitive to me.
There was also a young woman named Sybil Ludington, the 16-year-old girl who rode forty miles on horseback through the Hudson Highlands (on a stormy night, no less!) to muster the militia in defense of Danbury. She out rode all the men. Then was personally thanked by General Washington.

this little homie not quite, it's more of a historical spin off
this little homie You could see the whole episode on the channel. Like 22 frickin' minutes long!
If you want a true contribution from Paul Revere...He opened up the first ever copper rolling mill, and even effectively made the first currency for the new free world...contributions that were WAY more helpful than his one failed ride
“Put down your phones” that’s where it all ended
This made me so happy - and enlightened! Love the animations too, it's great. Well done ♥
Oh Jerry found a job finally. CH Narrator
This is a repost, the vid is from Adam's tvshow. Not CH
awww someone already said my thing that's too bad. Also thank you for the clarification. Super excited for more content from Adam!
he already had a job as a quack doctor in new york
"Put down your smartphones"
How tf we gon' watch this then?!
This is all put together so well, great animation CH THANKAYOUUUUUUU
I could listen to Chris Parnell narrate funny things all day long. I love his voice!
Is the narrator jerry from rick and morty?
Chris Parnell, Yup.
Yes, or the narrator from The Midnight Ruin of Paul Revere
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that lmao
Bob Boby LOL, the role i referred to is actually more famous, and from a better series than Jerry from R&M, but w/e
Yhea, I watch Archer, It's really good, sad that its ending soon, though.
If you want a special midnight rider that deserves Revere's notoriety, you could always celebrate Sybil Ludington, who rode from 9 pm until dawn on unpaved roads through a fierce storm to summon her father's troops to fight back against the burning of Danbury, Connecticut 😀
Prior to that, she apparently saved her father from capture at the hands of the British using Home Alone-style illusions in the windows to fool soldiers that a whole militia was in her house.
I love this 😂 it’s great. If you have watched Liberty Kids this is quite the nice refresher and it kinda makes you feel really smart
I like this. Small corrections to historical inaccuracies, rather than broad (and frankly, a bit misleading) corrections to large fields of knowledge.
Uhm... Ahcktually..
It’s ahkchually, ahkchually
The show in a nutshell.
wooow a real history more awesome when use animated as the background. Thank so munch man
When I was younger I had to do a report on Paul Revere oh the memories....

Well.. can't argue with that.
Although Russia are capitalist, just a really dodgy version of it lol.
They are also very far off of Social Democracy, which is what people on the left like Bernie want. Not to be confused with straight up Socialism (which is shit). Communism is a whole different thing.
I SWEAR I CANT GET ENOUGH OF THE ANIMATED VERSIONS OF ADAM!!!!!
The animation is soooo smooth
Oh my god, do I love Adam.
Well take one for the team and marry him. He'll chew your ear off about marriage being a money making bullshit thing and you'll live happily ever after
Memes and Hearthstone of course he wouldn’t.. because he already did.
No
I already knew everything you said except for the part about Paul not seeing the lanterns, and just for the record Paul revere’s ride is still iconic
This was how I learned it:
We were taught that he said “The Regulars are out!”
We already knew other people were doing the same thing
We knew who Dr. Warren was
We knew he was captured
And that’s all we learned. We didn’t know that he whispered, and we didn’t know he was captured with another dude
Cryolophosaurus ellioti I wish they taught me like that.
Same. A lot of these videos I see debunking myths that supposedly everybody believes just end up telling me the version that I was taught in school.
I love these❤️❤️🤣😂 plz do more
I thought this myth was already busted and it was common knowledge?
Only to those more intimate with American Revolution, to people like me it's just an easy myth to sorta-remember and know nothing about.
Jari Olavi Lipponen oh i can understand that but i mean common sense would dictate that one man alone could do that is kind of preposterous given the technology of the time
I mean it was still taught to me even in the 8th grade
Considering that the basic Revere -myth is about horse riding trough Boston it's sort of acceptable as long as you don't think about it. To be honest the only reason I even remember the guy is because he was one of the possible founding fathers in Sid Meyer's Colonization.
@LagiNaLangAko23 "You'd be surprised how uncommon common knowledge can be." ...I feel you're quoting something. Are you quoting something?
Fun fact the lanterns where hung in Christ church not north church
Jacob Rengen - I thought they were hung by the chimneys with care?
ElyssaAnderson that was ‘‘twas the night before Christmas not the midnight ride of Paul rever
They were clearly hung in a god church.
Guess I'll Die the name of the church was Old Christ Church
But it was totally a god church.
Been a while but now all I’m picturing is Jerry sitting in front of morty telling this story. Perfect voice for this
I was learning this in school thanks for the corrections

my social studies teacher actually cleared up all these misconceptions in our american revolution unit this year
Yoshieclipse Social Studies? Why that class? What do they teach in that?
James CyberLink they teach history
I'm about to show this to my teacher who taught this yesterday and speak truth in her face and she even dares to make to get me expelled I'm going to say y'all can't handle the truth
Dew it!
Ian Bailey I did
and?
actuall cancer it’s true I was the face
I just got expelled
I love ur vids
But than why does Paul Revere get all the credit? I felt like this video was lacking explanation unlike other Adam's videos.
A poet from the 1860s used his name when describing the success of the mission so basicly he became the poster boy for the midnight ride and after hundreds of year people just credited him with doing 100% of the work.
there is an explanation in the full episode
the poem referring to this whole event mentions Paul revere
Essentially, the event was being retold in a poem in order to stir up patriotism during the Civil War and poems tend to embellish & eschew facts.
I'm glad to see William Dawes getting his due.
"Put down your smartphone"

Imagine if the British caught Paul before he could deliver the warning .
Betreyal Justice then all the others would have warned most militias without him.
Annie Beguhl yup you are right I wish the British had won bahahahahha
Betreyal Justice they kicked our ass in 1812 to prove a point.
Alex Gregg all hail the British empire
If everyone was actually British why did the settlers rebel against the British empire.
Addition to that is a girl completed the entire ride that apparently revere did.
What's her name? Sounds interesting...
Unnatural09 that was a different attack
I see this as a historical act of teamwork. Plus, it kinda makes sense; I don't know any single horses that ride all the way from Boston to Concord.
Aw man this was one of my favorite stories in history too
I thought it was the red coats are coming, not regulars.
Glass Eating Junkie It was most likely both. But Regulars? Really?
I knew about the thing where Paul revere said the regulars are coming
Was i supposed to get an ad for Adam Ruins Everything on this video of Adam Ruins Everything? Because i did
I love the intro😍😍😍👏👏👍👍❤️❤️
And, Adam pls do a crossover with cinimasins
When you read the first question on a quiz 3:21
Opens with “put down your smartphones”
Is watching on smartphone
"And because we hate tea for some reason" i died in that part😂😂😂😂
I found a link to this video in the comment section of an Assassin's Creed 3 video with nothing but Paul Revere and honestly I am so grateful for that person-
The Progressive Box got a new job!
"Revere didn't go yelling! That would get him captured!"
Me: "...uh, actually, Revere was..."
"Revere and Dawes were caught and thrown in jail after warning Lexington!"
Me: "there it is!"
@Warlightor Or "Redcoats" probably would have sufficed.
He’s at it again
Love this guy. Always gives the honest truth. I only didn't know there was more than 3 riders.
George Washington's face though!
I read Glenn Beck's book on the subject. It says the same thing and came out long before this. Sure the myth is played down but that doesn't diminish the bravery and dedication of the Sons of Liberty. If anything it shows how intelligent and determined the Patriots were in fighting the crown
Phil Martinez Isn't Glenn Bleck the Lunatic who even got fired from Fox? 🤔
Phil Martinez i completely agree
God these are all really entertaining
"Put down your smart phone" as I watch this in my smartphone 😂
Wait, so then how did he become famous again? Adam, we need answers!
ADAM!
I read in the comments on the video truTV posted that it was a famous American poet who wrote about how brave his ride was. Don’t remember which one, but you should be able to Google from here.
Annie Beguhl thanks!
Narrator: Put down your smartphones
Me: Okay but now I can’t watch the video
My great great grandpa was one of those people. So yeah... just wanted to share that and feel special.
Adam I love it when you ruin shit, I've been really into history lately and it's nice to hear you reveal the truth
Hey Adam- I read in a history book about forgotten heroes that William Dawes avoided being captured but was thrown off his horse, then scared the British away by pretending there were more militia waiting in a nearby shed or something. Is this wrong too?
Maggie Ayers yeah, I did a report on him in 3rd grade and I can recall that he never got captured by the british.
It was marked on the map (Purple - William Dawes) did end up escaping and got thrown off
Adam didn't take note of that info
"put down your smartphones..." But I'm watching on my phone :(

I love how most of this was taught similarly in my middle school (im currently 16). Shows real progress in clearing up propaganda out of American history. (We learn about Rosalind Franklin too)
Such a legacy to behold
