"Basic pair of glasses can cost 400$ that's as much as my phone."
What wonderful times it used to be.
That sound like much for basic glasses. Like that's twice as much qs I paid for titannium framed ones with thknnered lenses with some fancy anryaliasing
Mine would've cost me $700.00 without insurance!
@@tornad8063-Wait,you paid more for thicker lenses?
I pay more to AVOID thicker lenses!
@@maestrulgamer9695 i meant for not having thicker lenses. My mistake lol.
Even most glasses without a prescription, just clear lenses .. no vision correction, will cost over $100.
but is that... legal?
lobbyists- “I will make it legal”
Yup, in Cyprus there are free eye exams. The store I went to was owned by one guy who had a drawer of free frames to choose from if you didn’t want to or couldn’t afford a frame. My current frame cost 119$ but since I was fixed on it he decided to be nice and give me them for free! Goes to show.
That's how mafia works
Legally......
Do one about your "$400 phone", see who's laughing now
I remember in high school in the early 2000s seeing Ray Bans EVERYWHERE
On people's faces, marketing everywhere, I was led to believe from one ad that Ray Bans had been around since the 30s and that they were the "Aviator's Choice" wether you were an air force pilot or a civilian pilot.
It was a great marketing campaign because I believed it, everyone in my high school believed it, and I really wanted a pair. Same think happened with Oakleys, everyone and their grandma was walking around with gascans when they came out.
Then I found gas station glasses that were identical to gascans or standard non Ray Ban aviators for $15-$20 or less with full UV protection...
0:53 1 word: Necessity. Companies sell products for more money because they know that we will buy them no matter the price because we need them to function in our everyday lives.
It was time for new glasses. I always bought 2 pairs of glasses (1 backup) and got the most expensive ones you could get (sun darkening glasses, lightweight frame and lenses, etc.) I decided to get lasik. I didn't do it for vanity reasons, I actually thought I looked fine with glasses, but I just hated having to always clean glasses, misplace them, etc. And I just realized that I wasn't looking at 4000 for lasik, I was looking at 3000 for it. (I have to get new prescription glasses at least every 5 years anways, so a grand in 10 years). The price is outrageous. I'm not going to lie, the convenience of no glasses was 80% of why I bit the bullet and paid for it, but the fact that glasses are so expensive was a contributing factor.
Now, if you can pay 4 or 5 grand for lasik (less if you go to Canada), you can save that money over a decade if you're getting new glasses every 2 to 3 years like you're supposed to. I think I used to wait too long in between eye exams.
my eye doctor checked my eyes and gave me a prescription. i could A: pay $200 to get glasses from the shop or B: buy on line and only pay $12.
$12 for both the frames and lenses, or are you just talking about frames?
I never thought Adam would get schooled by a person who he schools all the time.
I bought these $20 frames from eBay. Taking them in to get lenses I didn't expect much from them. But I have been wearing them for years now without any problem from them at all.
when its the day after black Friday and you get a black Friday ad anyways

I'm glad I have an old pair of Italian made Guccis frames that have nothing to do with Luxottica, and as they were a store display item I offered and only paid €80. Hope they last forever.
Medi-cal covered mine for free, thanks Obama
As soon as I saw the transition in the episode, I was like, "Oh no...!"
Pleeeaaase bring this show back
“She didn’t say Vicious Mockery, but I feel like she’s casting vicious mockery…” -Emily Axford.
In England we don't have that problem. The NHS makes sure that glasses are affordable for everyone. Specsavers and Boots sell glasses for at most about £100. That's the average maximum at cheaper places. The NHS also ensure that under 19s don't have to pay for eye tests or glasses unless they choose a designer brand such as Red or Dead and others. The NHS are something America would benefit from. Or something similar.
When she says they are all the same, they still look different so ha
I just bought my most expensive glasses for about $100 today about $50 for the lens (Crizal) and $50 for the frame(some European brand).
Before that, I bought Pakistani or Korean or Chinese ones for about $10 - $40 here in Pakistan.
I will admit that there seemed to be a some difference in comfort and quality.
this is why the same glasses are for sale for pennies on the dollar in countries that simply can't afford expensive frames
1:01 *visible confusion*
this video is so true. i shop at Zenni Optical now, i need a new pair, i buy 2 pairs of glasses, the price i pay varies based on what i want. so cheap. before i was told about Zenni, i would spend under or up too $400.00 dollars just for one pair
Oh, I wish I knew this when I bought my expensive glasses.
Illusion of choice - Adam Ruins the Electoral College, lol
Alright, now tell us if the rest of the eyewear factories are capable of implementing the same quality control as Luxottica: resins and acetates made from organic and long-lasting materials, hand made assembly processes, etc.
When I heard that LUXOTTICA is monopolising eyesglass manufacturing,I feel this is very shameless
They can freely set prices, they can set it very expensive in a non-competitive environment. This is very crazy!
I have to wear bifocal and they are pretty thick, I used to think that they were expensive because of the lenses and not the frame.
Im the Adam now LOL
My current pair of glasses is from that 20% of the market that isn't Luxottica, somehow.
I just dropped $400 on pair of Marc Jacobs prescription glasses...thank god my medical insurance paid for it, but definitely not buying fancy frames anymore.
That's why I use eyebuy direct. :\ I got 2 pairs of prescription glasses for about $80
if people stop buying glasses at 400$, they would stop asking 400$ for a pair of glasses.. :/
I need to see, but I guess I have to go blind or it's my fault this corrupt business goes on.
then we all blind *HELP US*
Yes but i need to see lmao
I like it when Adam does it better
As a luxottica employee- this made me laugh😂
That is why you buy your glasses in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, or via Aliexpress for only a tiny cost of what they cost in the west.
Yes, but fakes that undergo no testing or real quality control or certification. And even better take money away from the companies that develop the product in the first place.
oh how the tables have turned
$400 for a pair of glasses? I bought my Ray Bans for £90, including lenses...
$400? Then where did I get my $100 glasses?
Luxottica owns the cheap ones too. The difference is your cheap 100 dollar glasses should only have cost about 40 dollars.
I payed over a thousand for both my glasses and the stuff that holds it to my face when it's real value would be around 300 dollars.
Did i have a choice? Nope.
Have to get new glasses today welp.... there goes my $400 for a $14 plastic frame
ironically her phone probably only costs about 2$ to make, not counting software and development the price markup is a lot higher.
Cheapest pair of glasses I worn was free Expensive is about 100 to 200 dollars they both work finely
The founder of Luxottica died recently. He was worth $25 billion.
That's what monopolizing the eyeglass industry gets you.
Take that Adam
You know those fancy industrial machines you see in the background at Lens Crafters in the mall? Most of those aren't actually working machines. There's a guy whose job is to go to factories going out of business and buy machines that look like they'd belong in their store. Meaning, when you go pick up your Lens Crafters glasses, they have things like Sees Candy machinery to fool fools into thinking it's a legit business. Americans are amazingly gullible...
I want to know why lenses, made of plastic... especially stronger prescriptions made from the exact same plastic slug as a lower one, costs more. I know the answer is obvious price gouging someone who needs them more. And I know why it can't be fixed. But I'm still not happy about it.
Well, there is a difference in optical clarity between cheap plastic lenses and high quality polycarbonate or high index lenses. Achieving high quality optics out of injection molded plastic is not easy, not including the post process to machine the perscription. These differences may be instantly noticeable or may take a longer period of time to strain your eyes. Also, high quality polycarbonate lenses are much safer than glass lenses. Just watch some test videos!
Should have gone to specsavers!
Does Luxotica have control outside the US as well?
Yes. They're an Italian company, they own OPSM (an Australian chain that has the same logo as LensCrafters), and they have an office in Buenos Aires, which is in a country where most eyewear is imported in the first place.
How to know which companies does Luxotica owns in other countries?
$400 bucks for a pair of glasses? My glasses only cost me $75 for the frames and lenses being uv and scratch resistant. This was a family owned store though. I also replaced my other pair of glasses lenses today at walmart for like $50
and that's why I only get glasses when I'm in Egypt, the glasses that cost $400 here are only like $50 there lmao #takingadvantageofpooreconomiesftw
If you think the mark up on eye glasses are bad, go look up printer ink.
My sister in-law brags about getting designer frames. This made me feel good about buying the cheapest frames I could find.
Still getting ripped off for the lenses made of cheap plastic though. Plus even if government insurance is covering our glasses, the money still goes to Luxottica who either owns or has shares. That's tax dollars from you and me keeping them fat even if we buy cheap frames.
Send her this video
Ripped off... I've bought a pai of glasses in China and it only costs me 47 usd. I used the glasses for years already and it still held up very well and it is made with real metal in the inside. The quality is very consistent and the only thing that got onto it was some rust, but not too serious. At least Luxottica doesn't own Chinese glasses companies.
@@noby_huangkonghsiong I bought in vietnam for less than 10.
I bought two pairs plus an exam for about a hundred dollars stateside, but one of them broke after a month. Very low quality.

Wafflez Puncakes Right?!
in England I'm lucky if I can get a pair of glasses for at least 100 quid. I'm not a child anymore nor a pensioner so i dont get a big discount, I also have a very high prescription which means they have to make complex lens and may have to thin my lens in order for them to fit and not distort the frame.
Oh and the plastic frames that will fit my glasses i have to buy in the £25-35 range cos any lower and they won't fit.
And I do get a voucher... But its a pittance conplex lens voucher because a technicality of not having bad enough astigmatism along with my bad vision prevents me from getting the higher voucher I should get cos i am really short sighted. The voucher is only £14 on the whole thing which is easily at least over one hundred for one pair... Yeah that voucher doesnt even cover the frames!
Even bargain sites don't do much better than $60 --they a la carte you over $100 easily.
Adilade Jones what happens if you aren’t able to see out of the glasses properly? You can’t really go into a physical store to fix the issue
Barbietoofaded I have 7 pairs from them, I have never had that issue. If you have a proper prescription from an optometrist then you shouldn’t have an issue.

I actually knew this because of that 60 minutes episode on Luxotica. Wasn't aware they owned eye care places too. I only ever only get my prescription now and just buy glasses online (zenni optical) for like $35.
Last year I went to VisionWorks, and I spent too much money on glasses with antiglare, blue light filter and scratch resistant and God knows what else. Regularly I get my glasses at the VA optical shop without too much fuzz but I paid for the convenience I guess. I barely wear those glasses now.
The $35 is only for the frames. They tack onto that the cost for lenses, shipping, coatings, etc.
My glasses were about $70. But that included Photochromic (similar to Transition lenses) AND Blue-light blocking. The frames were about $20 to $25.
@@kalijasin Depends on your vision needs. 1.5 index lens? Included free. Many even have 1.56 index for free. UV protection? Included free. Anti-scratch coating? Included free. If you have basic prescription needs, you can get glasses for $6.95 + $4.95 shipping in the USA. So saying they cost around $35 is a pretty reasonable average. Mine cost about that because I got AR coating and frames that were in the $20's. When your vision is -1 (mine) or -2, you don't really need much more unless you want certain add on's like polarization, transitions, water/oil smudge coatings, blue light blocking, etc.
AAARG.
My dad runs a glasses company (Independent, I know 'cause he's the CEO)
Price was $100, except partnerships.
The cellulose acetate (frame material) costs something like $10-20
But we need to pay a salary (singular)
And the heater
And the rent
And all the machines
And worst of all, the competition made more
So we had to raise the cost to $250
Vicious cycle.
I’d pay that, to support a legit small business.
Yea people need to understand that regular business have expenses like rent, heat, employee salaries. Whereas online stores is basically all profit for them how are you supposed to compete with that and huge monopolies
The equipment/tools needed to manufacture eyeglass frames by hand cost less than $500.
$400 is norm?? sheeshh
i once spent $200 on a pair of sunnies...its probably the most moneys iv ever spent on clothing and i immediately regretted it.....they look cool but
yeah. I just spent $512 on my prescription glasses. My insurance was denied so I payed out of pocket. The store did try to give me some coupons to bring it down to about $430... And my eye condition means I need new glasses every year

Please bring this show back. I love it so much. I enjoy showing people the knowledge of this show.
Adam has his own channel
I've always figured glasses had to be a rip off but have never needed them so haven't let it upset me too much. I think episodes like this should describe what can be done about it. In a situation like this, I would think "Boycott" but .... if you need glasses, you really can't. So what can you do? There are laws in place to prevent monopolies but I guess they technically aren't a monopoly since they technically *only* own 80% of the market.
So what can you do?
Welcome to the show. The first ever bit was on engagement rings, and ended on how "there is nothing you can do about it."
Kadulikan Well that sucks
they actually do give you a solution in the end of this episode: buy online. Any manufacturer can make a website so they don't have to sell through Luxotica owned businesses, you just have to know who owns the company you're buying from
except they include glasses.com which IS owned by Luxottica, which you can see here - www.luxottica.com/en/retail-brands/glassescom
Engagement rings are entirely unnecessary. As soon as you figure that out, it's pretty simple. Just don't buy one, or buy one without diamonds for $30. So there's that you can do about it.
"What luxottica is truly selling you is the illusion of choice." DAMN. That is dark asf.
Dark but true

_i'm the adam now_
This is a funny coincidence since the day this came out I was doing a retail course where glasses came up.The trainer was having good fun talking about their markups and where they came from. He found a budget store and got a pair for $60, much better than what a lot of people he'd meet get I'm sure. After explaining that he mentioned where the frames would be bought, as well as the lenses and the changes needed to be made for a specific prescription, the total was only $17. So many people are being made to think they're so expensive, and until yesterday I sincerely thought that was true. The only thing of value is making it your prescription. If that's a complicated prescription that adds more of course, but they're still very cheap to make. Mine was from a budget store and were still $140 dollars. Markups, they're just ridiculous.
You should get this book published

I now have a vendetta against Luxotica. Thanks guys!
Sad part is this is legitimately 100 percent true. Trust me I would know.
How,You work for them?
I used to work logistics for Luxottica. All these SUPER HIGH END BRANDS like Prada, Channel, Gucci etc. They are all worth the same its funny because they are treated the same as the lens crafter discount models. As for Oakley after these horrible people bought them there was a storm of just Oakley boxes going through. Keep in mind this was JUST for Luxottica international.
My mom confirmed it too. She's been working in the eyewear industry for almost 20 years haha
My god, the glasses industry truly a monopoly

Because of this sad truth, I have for years refused to buy anything Luxottica makes, only buying from independently owned stores. Before I even begin to look for frames there, I ask to be shown only non Luxottica brands, which is sadly not that many in a lot of stores. Crazy thing is, you can find amazing, and very unique styles if you're willing to venture out of the malls. They're sometimes less than what you'd get for a cookie cutter look from one of the chain stores, while not giving into this hidden monopoly; you just need to go to boutique shops to find them. For those of us with complex eye issues that make it impossible to buy online, it's the only option to get away from the behemoth that is Luxottica!
Why does it say that this was just posted an hour ago? I watched this a couple of days ago

the sentence "everything is worth what people are ready to pay" is one of the most basic concepts of buisness...
Yes, but when there is no competition to control pricing?
thom rivera then its too bad
its not a companys job to keep the market fair.. thats the job of the law
but the law isnt fair this time... thats all
Seems like a clear violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, which specifically prohibits multiple different types of curtailment of competition, but in this case, especially vertical integration used to crush competitors. In 1948, U.S. v. Paramount (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Paramount_Pictures,_Inc.) saw the Supreme Court rule that the five major motion picture studios could could not own theatres and could not control what films they showed. There have been subsequent inroads made in that particular industry that did wind up giving the big studios some control as a cartel, most notably the MPAA, which notoriously delays and gives arbitrary ratings to independent films. But the point is similar: vertical integration at the level Luxottica has reached is unfair to consumers, and would also be struck down in the U.S., if only someone had the wherewithal to take legal action. While the company is headquartered in Italy, their operations in other countries are subject to those countries' laws.
The fact that there is token competition in the eyeglasses and sunglasses market is immaterial.
Of course, that said, Snopes remains unconvinced that Luxottica actually owns 80 percent. (www.snopes.com/does-luxottica-own-80-of-the-eyeglass-industry/) It might be better to say "as much as 80 percent.
Yeah, the statement is true, but in the context of a company that basically holds a monopoly in an industry (specifically one involving something people NEED) , it is a disgusting and deplorable thing to beleive and consequently abuse.
Its true.
In my country, glasses are always 90% off for this exact reason.

I have bought my own glasses three times so far. The first time was just before I fell off my parents' insurance and the family eye doctor charged 200-and-something. Then I didn't have money for glasses for several years, and when I went out to use my insurance in 2019, I didn't bother shopping at the optometrist and went straight to Zenni. Bought a pair for $70 and as an out of network provider Eyemed gave me almost $50 back. A pandemic and a job change later I thought I'd let my new eye clinic quote me on a pair. It came out to $450 after insurance. My new pair from Zenni arrives next week for $80 and I expect to get more than half of it back. I'm not going to waste my time on clinic fittings again.

Not all the places I've been to agreed to me reusing my frame so I stick to the ones that allow it.

75% of Americans need glasses? That doesn't seem right
75% need them. doesn't mean they wear them. 3 of the 4 people in my house need them, but mostly my sisters just uses hers.
if you think about it, it adds up. The people who wear glasses regularly, the people with contact lenses so it doesn't seem like they are wearing/in need of glasses, the people who should but refuse to wear their glasses, and the people that like only need them for reading and stuff. Plus when you think about it, like 90% of elderly people have glasses, and that's a pretty big part of the population
Well some wear contacts, some get laser eye surgery, and some only need reading glasses.
You could wear glasses for even minor eye problems. I'm like that, even if I can't see what's wrong I'm actually constantly straining my eyes without notice and will usually get a headache if I've been reading or writing. I got some so I could avoid the headache. It's been good.
Also your sight can start to fade at 30. It's gradual across your life. So plenty of thirty year olds could need them as much as me but not notice.

so like, if monopolies are illegal, why is this still happening?
Hi, I'm -Mr. Crabs- The U.S. and I like money.
Luxotica isn't based out of the US though, so they likely escape the same tariffs and taxes US based companies have to cough up and could totally blackball glasses in the US if the US government tried to strongarm them.
@@michellelincoln9987 even if they were based in the US, our *entire* government is owned by mega corporations like Amazon, Koch Industries, and Walmart.

Also, the only real reason the US government broke up monopolies like Ma Bell and Standard Oil is cuz they weren't getting their fair (i.e. the lion's share) of the money these companies were raking in
So the 20% of eyeglass brands NOT controlled by Luxotica are.....??? Same question for eyeglass stores

I would keep an "eye" on your eyesight, though. There's a chance your vision is starting to ever so slightly deteriorate, or, as in my case, your eyesight gets steadily worse, but you don't notice it because you're getting used to it. Get a second opinion at a different optometrist.
james lee Well my eye doctor said no need.
My doctor told me I had 20/50 vision when I can see perfectly fine... Lol how much does Luxatica pay our doctors
UA-camrtz 20/40 is the legal driving limit. Luxottica pays nothing. And neither do any of the other companies that exist (despite what this video says). A true optometrist cares about the health of your eyes and functional vision (especially when driving) driving without proper correction could injure not only yourself, but others that share the road with you.

It might mean that your DOMINANT eye is your good one, so you've never truly noticed the deterioration... Try closing one eye and then the other.
If you still see just fine, then have that eye exam redone
That moment you try to push up your glasses and realize you took them off so you just awkwardly tap the middle of your face
I live in Sweden, and we have the same brands as anywhere else, i.e. basically everything is owned by Luxottica. But I’ve been thinking of going to Smarteyes instead of the one I go to now, because Smarteyes is cheaper. Turns out none of their glasses are Luxottica, so That explains why they’re cheaper. I thought the cheapness had to do with quality.
About 60$ for glasses in Canada not 400$, and many small stores that sell for 20$ for sunglasses and 60$ for prescribed
Viridian Borage yes I'm in America they're just garbage just about as I expect that they are in Canada
