Also, per the "going to sea for health" issue, I remember learning this a bit some years back when I visited Newfoundland. Basically, seawater contains iodine, which improves mental abilities, helps regulate hormones and helps heal/maintain the thyroid gland. This is due to the negatively charged ions in seawater which over the years has been shown to have a healing effect on the lungs and bronchi! I'm not sure how much of this technical knowledge they knew back then, but apparently, there was enough of a medical consensus that it became a prescribed method of treatment for such issues.
Vomiting out some of the poisons and likely being relieved of exposures to allergens, ie pollens and wood smoke, as well as avoiding the problems of poor sanitation on land is likely why much of ship travel helps some people (and travel in general). New foods can help as well, as avoiding bad foods/foodstuffs...
So a medical mis-dosing made Mr. Cresswell quite ill..., something that happens even in our modern era.
I love these journals. They are true glimpses into what life was like in the 18th century. Thank you for sharing with us, Jon.
Like the addition of the pics.
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother and everyone else thank you for sharing your live history videos
This was really interesting. I think i would have punched that doctor in the face too haha. This video series i think is my favorite out of all the townsends content. thank you for the years of great education and entertainment
Interesting video. Did the man fully recover??
These readings and your commentary are very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

What a contrast between Creswell's and Shaw's journals: Creswell appears to be sick all the time and Shaw has an uneventful sea journey shy of having to wait two months.
I see you are drying out a couple of dead lizards on the right😅
What...happened to the hummingbird?
I'm assuming it was a tiny "morsel" for a sick person to eat. Back then people ate all kinds of birds we'd never think of eating today. My great-grandmother liked blackbird pies!
I'm not even sure if it was alive or not.
@@RogCBrand Boy i cant imagine eating blackbird. I suppose if i knew for sure it was safe to eat Id be willing to try Blackbird pie though.
@@TextileGeorge Same here. My dad is a hunter, so I've tried a lot of stuff many people haven't but there are just things that seem "not food" animals yet, our ancestors ate what they could get! I might try blackbird, but there are things like possum that I just couldn't manage to set aside the image of what it is!
👍👍👍👍👍
Oh my my my. Medical misfortune indeed. Lol I would of been so mad at that doctor too. Some of the "treatments" are so scary.
it is so weird to watch this video and see the summer/fall setting when we just got dumped on again with rain and snow in AZ.
the islands were probably the azores.
I think so too. The Azores are known for excellent pineapples still today.
Or Cape Verde, where there are a lot more coconuts than in the Azores....
