So this week in ND has been crazy. Temps reaching as low as -40 for ambient air and -75 with windchill. The truck has been sitting outside not plugged in and we see if she will start up. The truck is a brand new L5P Duramax. I explain my favorite features and do a cold start in this video.

These are the conditions that would cause elevated idle in any case:
The engine has been idling for more than 30 seconds.
The transmission is placed in Park or Neutral.
The vehicle speed is 0 MPH (0 km/h).
The ambient air temperature is less than 0 °C (32 °F).

You have to go into your settings to turn the elevated idle on, then I just leave mine on and the idle will only elevate when a temperature threshold is meet. When the temps go up the elevated idle doesn't kick in. Same with the auto heated and cooled seats.@@TurboBoysGarage If you got it turned on and its not engaging when its cold out then you have some computer or sensor issues.

That was a cool test to see how it starts on its own in the cold weather however if you had to go somewhere the next morning at those temperatures you would want to leave the block heater plugged in all night and also anytime any diesel truck is outside when the temperature is below zero out you always want no less than half a tank of diesel fuel and possibly even some anti-gel additive in addition and take it for a drive with that anti-gel additive in the tank to get it mixed up before an extended period stored in cold weather. On my 2004 Ford diesel when you start it it will do the high idle automatically when it is cold and then you will hear it cycle down as soon as you put your foot on the brake. It won’t do the high idle immediately, I would say usually after about a minute or two of idling.

"Real feel", otherwise known as windchill has no effect on inanimate objects. Cars and trucks only "feel" ambient temperature. "Really feel" is only for things that are alive. Also your truck doesn't have "glow plugs". It has an intake grid heater. The grid heater is also what was causing your rpm to fluctuate. The grid heater continues to cycle after the engine is running and the rpm drop was the increased load on the alternator each time the heater turned on.

@@omgwonders if a engine is running at any rpm it is "adding a wear an tear". If you didn't know, metal expands and contracts when hot and cold. Different parts of the motor heat up quicker. It's not uncommon for the piston to heat up much quicker than the block and end up scraping the piston skirt. Oil, especially thicker oil used in diesel engines doesnt flow as fast ALSO accelerating wear.
There are many factors that cause wear but an engine is only going to rotate a certain number of times in its life no matter how well it is maintained. So idling deffinately adds up.

The "real feel" is just telling you the whidchill is. That temp only affects things with heat. Like your body. If your bare skin is exposed you will get frostbite in the same time as if it was the "Reelfeel" temp. If you are driving down the highway at 60 mph ands stick your hand out the window and it's 30f out you are experiencing 10f windchill. If it is -25f at 60mph it's same as -69f. If you stick a thermometer out the window. It will always show the air temp nothing less. Windchill effects only the rate of heatloss. Something that is hot will cool faster but not get colder than air temps. I hate the fear the weather has built into people. It not any colder now than 10 years ago. The reason your truck snuffed out was the air entering the combustion chamber was too cold to support combustion on the next ignition event. That's where the fuel on the third try helped. The rough run is the ecm trying to balance combustion and emissions. Cold engines have lots of soot from incomplete combustion. So it was tryingto "see" what the limit was for balanced operation.

Starting the truck as soon as the glow plug light turns off the first time and waiting a few seconds without turning the key off insures the easiest start possible as the new glow plugs are electronically controlled by a smart controller and they stay heated until they are not needed. Also the glow plugs have nothing to do with plugging the truck in, that would be the block heater, warms up block, coolant, etc. If you don't think you have a block heater just look you will find it, all Duramax trucks have them.
