That last minute was gold
If they keep iterating at this rate, it won't be long before there's a 5150 5150.
Or they could make a 5.15k
Dan M Damn,if you haven't found your sound by now with all that better equipment in the background why would you waste your time on this crap! And don't try to sell it to unsuspecting noobs ...oh yeah, that's what the music store biz is all about!😛
EVH counts his GOLD as well. All the Fanboys that have to have the newest version. It is like selling IPhones. Just get Friedman and be done.
EVH LBX2: $699.99
Friedman Runt: $1,299.99... Whose counting their GOLD again??
Thanks for all your hard work. This seems to be the best review on the comparison of these two EVH amps. I decided to buy the older LBX model.
As always..I love your reviews and stoked you did this one.
I like the new one and I really like the sound at 1:50. We are always ready for more reviews. Great channel.
if they'd street price it at $499, their sales would triple.
totally agree
Bought the LBX ii with the matching 1x12 cab used like new for $500 for both! Seen some great deals lately. RIP Eddie, and thanks for what you’ve given to the industry! Your sound lives on!
I totally Love; Love! the new one,the 5150 III LBX II and feel they should only make the one. They got it right this time it freaking rocks and the clean is so beautiful it shimmers. The reduced wattage makes it the perfect bedroom amp and when cranked it’s plenty loud enough to gig with, just mic it for that awesome big boy tone
Individual gain and volume + real clean chanell are a must
The new one sounds and looks better to me. I also would rather have a good clean channel over two gain channels.
I’m sure a lot of people agree, but if you have the first one you can do what Eddie did to get a clean tone... lower the volume on the guitar.
Except you buy this amp for gain channels not for cleans. And if your buying this amp you probably already have a great clean amp.
I think the new white one looks way cooler! Would love to see & hear more from you on this Amp, please go ahead with the comparison! Cheers Phillip, love the channel 🙂
Anything you want to tryout will be great I am all ears great to know more about new stuff great video thanks for sharing
Great video! Love the last part of the video.
Oooooooo! I like what's happening with your amp room! Killer stuff in there!
Hey Phil, could you do a video on guitar maintenance (common issues like crackly pots etc.). Thanks, love your videos!
I think the guitar gear market is so saturated now it's ridiculous.
hmm
Dude the last minute you blew my mind. It was a Matrix moment
great video, thanks Phil!
Honestly, I prefer the original. I prefer having the red channel, and the crunch channel, although not being completely clean, can get some cool bluesy edge-of-breakup kinda clean-ish tones. Cool review, Phil! :)
by the way Phil, that commentary at the end of the video about the series numbering of the various versions released was epically funny!
I've ordered the 11 in the UK still waiting for it, the shipping keeps getting pushed back, I would have got the 1 when it came out if it had have been the green and blue, I always thought the red channel was OTT, looking forward to getting it
Those sound soooooo damn good
@Xzavier Nash Yea, I have been using Kaldrostream for years myself :)
Keep them both since they are for two different applications! Some players want a clean and gain, some don't use the clean and love the two gain channels!
For that price just get the 5150iii 6l6 50 watt
Best guitar channel on You Tube. Hands down. You rule, Phil. Lol
Totally would adore a comparison against the runt 20, two amps I'm looking at possibly getting! The runt boasts the benefits of the direct out but the cost hurts me.
I got the first LBX about 2 weeks ago and I couldn't be happier with it, it cleans up just fine on the blue Channel with the gain off to me. but in all honesty I don't play clean that much so it's not really a big deal, great amps either way
terry lafauci Right! All this endless, intellectual hand-wringing is ridiculous. The amp sounds killer and is a terrific bargain when looking for an inexpensive, high gain amp with a decent clean channel. I wish I could afford a Friedman, but this gain quality comes close for a fraction of the price.
1970borntorun exactly. I was originally going to go for something like a Diezel or Bogner...the Friedman BE100 was also on my list but I couldn't justify spending that kind of cash on amp when I'm not a gigging musician, hell, in not even in a band. I'm just a bedroom Jammer and this little EVH is perfect for that, I do plan on eventually getting something super high-end but right now we are going to use the money I would have spent to look into buying our first house.
terry lafauci Right on man! Peace :) 🎸😎
Great vid thanks for posting, Have you got a vid where you do a shoot out between the head and the pedal? that would be great.
dude nice review!! I used the white face about 2 years ago for gig and it was too much!! look forward to testing the black face! nice strat with hums!!!!
Great review as always. I like the way the EVH 5150 LBX II sounds and looks better than the LBX original.
Kudos on using an e 609! I like em better than the classic SM 57s personally. Rock on Phil!!
Great review! Still waiting for your Soldano Hot Rod 25 review?!!
I have lbx 1 and I really love it, as I play metal it's great for my needs of distortion red channel has the perfect gain and tone, if You play more like rock probably you should go with lbx 2.
Wow, paused at the beginning . . . . that one *happy face!* I'll get one of these heads based on that alone!
the new LBXII sounds tighter on the blue (?) overdriven channel good review Phil
Would definitely love to see a comparison to the Runt 20. Love my Friedman, would like to hear them side by side
Cool video
I think you should have matched distortion on the evh lbx 1 amp blue channel to see how close they sound because even though the knobs were in same position the amount of distortions were very different. Which would you recommend for early Van Halen sound?
Yeah, I'd like to hear a Runt 20 vs LBX II review. And also hear the MXR EVH 5150 Overdrive pedal into the Runt to see how it compares to the LBX II sound. Keep up the good work Phil! :-)
Would love a longer video with more amp sounds :)
Phillip McKnight, congrats for the quality of the channel. Is the lbx II usable at bedroom levels?
Hello Phillip, Hope all is well with you. I have a question sir, in 5 days I'm going to purchase the EVH 5150 III EL-34 50 Watt head and the matching cab. My question is does the EVH 5150 III EL 34 50 Watt take the Revv G3 distortion pedal well in the effects loop as a preamp? I run my Boss DD-7, CH-1 Super Chorus, T.C. Electronics Flashback Delay and Boss RV-6 for reverb, into the effects loop. I'm hoping I get a killer sound, what are your thoughts Mr. McKnight? By the way, I play a Gibson Les Paul Classic Plus Vintange Sunburst Flame Top and an Fender Special Edition Flame Maple Top Humbucker/Humbucker. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!! Love your channel, by the way!
I think they both look great. They also both seem to sound great too. They seem to be two different flavors that are both good.
Do the review Phil, killer job!
I sold my old LBX and purchased the new LBX II, I feel that the new version is much better. I would be willing to bet that this amp will come in a combo on the next version.
You should make a video about the Tubmeister Delux amps from hughes & kettner. I owne the 40watts version and i must say, it is a superb practice amp and for shure loud enought for playing with a band. Also the tones you get out of it are stunning for such a small amp.
Woo hoo! New video!
Great Reviews as always Phil.
I´ve got money ready to buy a good amp... But surely EVH should introduce a 15W Combo. ( Marshall DSL15, Laney TI15 Tony Iommi - both drop in for around 600euros)
I use an old trustworthy CRATE POWER BLOCK head with a CelestionCentury . .But maybe I´ll wait til new year to see if Fender...sorry EDDIE... decide to make a 1x12 15w combo
I'd like to hear a EVH vs Friedman review
I really want the first LBX, or mini Rectifier. I love mini heads like those cause I live abroad so I want something very portable lol
Hi there Phil, In regards to LBX ii head.Should I see a reduction in volume when 1/4 power is switched ON and volume dial remains in the same position? Great videol!!
Hey Phil, do you have an opinion on the "Vintage" brand Icon guitars. Their Strat and Tele copies sound pretty amazing from the few videos I've found?
I have an SG and it sounds great
Yes, I want to see the new LBX II vs the Friedman Runt 20....
Actually the Peavey 5150 series were all 2 channel amps. Rhythm and Lead Channels. The Rhythm channel has a Crunch button that goes from cleanish with the button off, to a high gain rock channel with the Crunch on. The 5150 II had the Crunch channel footswitchable unlike the original which made that amp kind of like a 3 channel amp if you wanted to look at it that way.
Cool video
Which amp is better for the vintage Van Halen sound?
Pretty interesting. So the question now is the new EVH 5150 III LBX II or the Peavey 6505 MH for those classic 80s metal sounds (Judas Priest, Metallica, etc)? I like the fact that the Peavey has the XLR among other stuff
Would you rather have the EVH 50 watt or a Peavey 6506+ 120 watt? I just bought the EVH yesterday but had a chance to play the 6505 today and I'm starting to have second thoughts.
Yes, please compare with the Runt.
Yes .... Compare the LBX to the RUNT please
I like the looks of the old one, black face with thw white knobs. I like the blue channel sound of the new one
Got the LBX II the other day and like the sounds but don't get the 1/4 power output switch. When I flick it it only reduces the volume for a few seconds and then quickly comes back up to the same level of the full 15 watts. Am assuming this is a fault? Anyone else having issues with theirs? It was bought brand new.
I have the same problem with my LBX II . I got my one month ago and I am thinking to sell it. There's many bad issues with the design of this amp. I played three different and all have the same problem as a harsh , fizzy sound. the ¼ power switch is no sense. Fender should be sued to sell a shit amp with so many problems ( pop when change blue to green, a lot of hiss..
Yes, compare Runt and LBX II please!!!!
Nice job on the video. Do to you think that the lbx 2 is loud enough when playing with a drummer ?
Can you hook it up to lets say a peavey classic 30 combo? So I can just usebthe speakers? Or do I need a seperate cab. Thanks.
Would like to see if you can get your hands on a Morgan amp or two for review as I'm looking at getting one.
Nice!! We need a PRS s2 singlecut satin in depth review by you, so I know it's good before pulling the trigger for it!
Santiago Martin I just watch somebody play s2 singlecut through one earlier it sounded amazing the clean is one of the best I've herd on lunch box style not only does pedal sound good in front the fx loop is good too
I have the LBX version 1, & it's a good little amp...But, even for me, it's got waaay too much gain...I stuck a couple low-gain pre-amp tubes in it & problem solved, but for the price, I think they should have all 3 channels: clean/green, crunch/blue, & od/red...
I can say without a doubt it has great tones through a 4x12, either my EVH or my Marshall, it sounds great through both, & is LOUD for a 15w amp...
While the low-power mode is cool, it changes the tone slightly compared to the 15w mode...Not a huge difference, but for what I use it for (recording), there is a difference...
IMHO, if they'd make this a 3-channel amp, with a bit less gain on the red & blue channels, they'd have a winner...
Which one is louder? Could you play with a band at a cranked volume without sacrificing sound?
we need a charvel pro mod vs schecter super shredder. that would be a great compaison. are you still getting a gelvin?
Would love to hear your opinion on comparing the 5150 III lbxII to the Runt 20. I have both, and my take is that there's this compression you just can't get out of the lbxII without taking the gain so low it makes it sound sterile (yeah... really low, like 0.5). I suppose that's my only issue with the lbxII, I do miss the original blue channel from the 5150 III 100W head. Even the original lbx had a better blue channel. The clean channel on the lbxII IS good, and it almost makes me want to keep it just for that. As far as the Runt goes... at first I just wasn't finding the punch you in the face tones I was hoping for, but with some tweaking, I can get them now, AND I can also get some more smooth vintage tones out of it that I can't with the lbxII. Since I already have the 5150 III 100 W, 50 W and lbx, the lbxII will be going back to the store. If I was in a band that played hard rock, I'd definitely keep the lbxII over the Runt 20, but since I play more pop and lighter rock in my band, the Runt works better for me. Both are killer amps, but I seem to get more flexibility out of the Runt. Definitely check them both out. ;)
Have the 1st, but will buy the 2nd too. Need the clean.
I've never been a guitar player that has turned down the volume to get a clean tone and with the previous amp only having a blue and red channel it kinda turned me off to buying it. this one I would buy. I still like my 6505mh tho but the clean on it is so so....great video man!!
I would be curious if you could do a shootout of everything 5150, 6505 and the MXR 5150 pedal to see which one can make the most brutal death metal sound. I think it would be interesting since the 5150 is very popular in that genre.
A friend of mine lent me a LBX2 to check out because he was complaining of a lot of “hiss” coming from the drive channel. Is this typical of these amplifiers? I told him it was probably just the nature of the beast, as I was still getting some pretty good sounds from it.
Jesus, you said "hit the like button" and the real like- button under the vid started to light up....that's what I call magic 🤣
I totally lost it at "I'm confused"
EVH LBX (either version) or a Mark V:25 for home use?
The new one is more scooped. Both have their applications.
What do you think about giving letter or number grades to each piece of gear you review? That way we have a reference on what you rate gear vs older videos? Or is there a reason you want to stay away from doing that?
What do you think about this I’m considering the Friedman JJ mini vs. 5150 mini. Which one?
Did he ever do the 5150 vs. Runt video? That would be awesome.
Philip, please put up a pic of when you had hair
Hello! Can you get clean sound at HIGH volumes with this amp and a 2x12 or 1x12?
And separate recorded guitar tracks, instead of relying on camera audio. I appreciate that!!
I had the old LBX and loved it but due to my gear flipping addiction I sold it. I tried the new LBX and it sounded REALLY fizzy. I didn't get to turn it up a to see if it leveled out but that made me shy away from buying one.
Rooster 7six As soon as you pump some volume it comes alive!! I have both and prefer the LBX 2
hey phillip I have a question for (it has nothing to do with this video lol) just today I traded a 2015 Squier Affinity Strat HSS for a 1989 Ibanez EX350, do you think it was worth it? the only work it needs as far as i know is new frets
I think they should stick with the original lbx, but come out with a stealth version that includes a resonance knob each for blue and red and little bit more gain flexibility for both blue and red.
does your lbxii have a pretty load hum was wondering what was best way to get it out
It would be cool if you did a video on Yamaha guitars! Not much people talk about them
I still dig the original red channel. It's still the most out of control and heavy dirty channel I can find in a lunch box head. What do you guys think?
Have you already bought it? Or actually played on? I am thinking of buying one of them and wondering why so many people dislike LBX 2 sound compared to the first one
Man I am sorry I took so long to respond. I never saw your comment before now. The second version is very runny at low volumes. The first is more like the Peavey 6505, better at low volumes. You could use a volume box in the effects loop and create a master volume that would solve the issue. Hope this helps.
Definitely love the LBX I.
Nothing beats the fender twin with a brownie distortion
EVH V Friedman yeah do it. It's not a comparison I'd have thought of, which is the best possible reason to do it!!!!
What you should really do is take the EVH 5150 LBX II and place the Friedman BE-OD pedal in it and compare it to the Friedman amp with the EVH pedal in it. Also let me take an amp off your hands
Awesome
does your evh 5150 lbxii have a bad hum in it I've tryed everything it hums/his I don't understand I know it's high amp but I've never seen 100 watt hum like this
YES! Compare it to the Runt 20!!
I may get this for my first high gain tube amp. It is 949 here in canada. Are there betters amp for cheaper?
fiddyonefiddy that last part got me cracking
You ever reviewed any of the transtrem steinbergers ?
Why not make it with all three channels?
Size ...
That last minute.... Is like a riddle... And soooooooo goooood...... LOL!!!
A Bad Horsie WAh would be awesome on that clean tone one.
Is the original version loud enough to play over a drummer
Would love to see the EVH and Friedman go head to head.
