    I have the EVH 2x12 50W combo and it has a built in attenuator. I can play anywhere from 1W-50W and it’s easily the greatest amp I’ve ever owned. It literally does anything I need it to do in any setting or environment. I run it through a Mesa 4x12 with MXR Smart Gate and 10-band and it’s the best tone I’ve ever played with.

    EVH is a metal amp. The Runt is more of a classic rock amp.

    The Runt also has a cab sim recording out that you can use for silent jamming without a speaker.

    Why didn'y you try out the 1/4 power option on the EVH?

  • @GuitarGuruLLC
    @GuitarGuruLLC 6 років тому +2

    I bought the EVH because of it's size, weight and price. Friedman makes killer stuff, but I don't think this was a fair comparison. It is a bit noisy on the high gain channel, but there are ways around that. Also, the EVH has a Resonance knob on the back with a 1/4 drop power switch.

    you will get a totally different response from both amps through a 4x12 cabinet.I have a be 100 half stack and use the EVH first model occasionally through the 4x12 and its awesome.

    We are really getting to the point where digital tech is winning when it comes to late night playing at home. Analog amps have to be cranked, not only because of the gain stages, but also because of the speakers' efficiency sweet spot.

    • @waterwoodguitars6871
      @waterwoodguitars6871 6 років тому

      Steelstring Singer I agree. When it comes to wanting to play quietly to not wake up the kiddos, digital is really there now. That Yamaha THR is pretty awesome and inspiring for a late night practice.

    I've come close to buying the Runt several times and this might be the video that helped make my final decision not to. I know its a great amp for some but I like more gain and not by using a pedal. I want to plug straight in and go for it. I'll stick to my ENGL's for now. Thanks for the video.

    • @pastorsprinkles
      @pastorsprinkles 7 років тому

      Steve Cone true the runt doesn't have as much gain as the evh but the gain is usable. It is the first small high gain amp I've owned that even with gain dimed never gets muddy or hiss, also no matter how you set the eq it sounds great. Engls are great too though. To each their own but I wound not count the Friedman out.

      Steve Cone bro the best thing you could do is go listen to a Friedman live, check out the PT 20 it's a monster. I added a switch to mine thanks to Dave Friedman. Also the Friedman amps have a lifetime warranty. No matter what you do you can't go wrong, keep rocking brother!

      I haven't played the Runt 20 yet but I have played the PT-20 several times and I'd have to echo the previous statement, the gain is usable at all levels. And it's just punchy and tight in a way that I find difficult to get out of most other small wattage amps. To my ears that EVH LBXII just did not capture that same tight, punchy-ness.
      One other thing I'd like to point out is how well it responded to guitar volume knob changes - I actually consider it to be much more of a plug straight in type of amp in that regard. I can only assume the Runt 20 is similar.

  • @psychojackjack2139
    @psychojackjack2139 7 років тому +1

    You know, for the money, if you seek a great clean, a nice gain that doesn't have alot of noise and hiss, consider the Peavey Classic 20 head. I was recently pleasantly surprised after playing it. The clean is top notch.

  • @JIMJAMSC
    @JIMJAMSC 7 років тому

    Todays smaller heads are basically big pedals. Get something known for glassy cleans and high quality as your base pedal platform. I have a Mini rectifier and a Blue jr and the larger blues deluxe. These little heads sound good but are 1 trick ponies. Also a Z amp brake lite would get that EVH sizzle at speaking volume.

  • @JayOchs
    @JayOchs 7 років тому +1

    funny, my marshall JCM 2000 DSL100 does the exact same thing with the volume as the LBXII. when the volumes set very low, it's like that broken radio sound.

  • @davidepannone6021
    @davidepannone6021 7 років тому +1

    Not even comparable. One is a jack of all trades (from chimey cleans to modern metal) amp and one is a classic rock up to some 70s hard rock amp. It's like comparing apple and oranges.
    And one is way more expensive than the other.

  • @guitardudeguy3139
    @guitardudeguy3139 7 років тому +1

    The clean channels had only a slight difference that I could hear, when it got to distortion the EVH got saturated quickly and after halfway it really didn't change much, just got fizzier. The Friedman stayed cleaner longer and really didn't saturate at all..even when buried it still kept it's definition. I think the Friedman wins this round, although I wonder how it handles pedals..You could probably overdrive it with a Dirty Shirley and it would probably be amazing. The EVH you could probably do the same, but only on the clean channel..just my opinion. The EVH is kinda trying for that brown 80s sound which it achieves..but needs more definition on the notes. I think with pedals it would compress to quickly for any kind of mixture.

    I think both amps sound really good so it comes down to personal preference and budget. The Friedman has a smoother and more pleasing sound for my ears but the EVH might be better for those who are looking for a rip your face off harsher loud tone.

    If you seek an amp with a great clean, great distortion, plus a boast and a master volume, I would highly recommend the Hughs and Ketner 20 watt Deluxe. Amazing amp. and not alot of hiss. Plus has a redox on the back to run straight to a computer. and has different cabinet simulation. much more bang for the bucks than these 2 amps. Rabea does a great demo of it.

  • @notoriousfunk7959

    don't know th evh but i know very well friedman amps having a PT20 and a smallbox, the distortion comes from the pre but even from the master volume, gain at 10? you will get a sound but if you increase the master volume for more than 2 as Philip did you will notice how the sound change in better, more distortion but even more armonics without lots of compression. Using a tube amp like friedman with the amp volume at 1 or 2 is like using it at half of his potential. I use a lot the PT20 for recording, it give his best with the master at 6/7, same thing more or less for the smallbox with the difference that the PT20 can a little bit more aggressive. When i changed the tubes the technician said the PT20 it's a copy of a jcm800, if you know jcm800 you should know you get the best out of it with the volume at 10 with the difference that one is 20watt (18.something rms) the other is 100watt. Sorry for this long reply but even if they are "small" amps you can't judge their sound with the master at 2.

    Hey Phil, love your videos, I have a runt 20 and I know you have done a review of the runt before, I don't really think this a far comparison, it's a bit apples and oranges, yes they both are el84 powered but voicing and build quality are worlds apart, Also the direct and silent recording options put the amp in a different ball park. One amp is a boutique modded marshall and the other is a cheaper version of a better amp. That is evident by the lbx2's horrible master volume. Build quality is definitely better on the runt as well. Any way not trying to put your video down because I really do enjoy the channel and always look forward to the new video.

      Guitar Nut ... why is it when it's in a full size box of Manufacturers choice woods, it's not MDF, capped in that automotive black roofing Vinyl, hospital corners with a "proprietary type" corner protector , had dials on it, critics say more than you ever needed, why are these always referred to as the "M" type head. That makes no sense. These are the parts, they fit in these cubic inch dimensions in the configuration of this amplifier, I want to wrap it in Deep NE old Brown Maple, dried in the yard for 50yrs maybe ... then black vinyl, black corner fittings, internal red, yellow & orange LED's with preset color patterns making it look like it's starting to catch fire ... if others can do blue, why not be interactive to the music.
      So it's not a Marshall and no one has ever tried catching Marshalls sound. They've all developed their own sound using mostly the same parts yet sound different to each other. I don't know, .Marshall has been taking a beating now for 2 years for these fluffenutter boutique head manufacturers that now only make 5-10 per line because no one wants a hard drive with presets that can amplify those preset sounds. There no need for anything but PA systems now. A mini front house 24 line input for your microphones for your 1 guitar hard drive that plays through a single Celestiion 10" at 100db. The PA is so advanced that it boosts it to straight Motörhead wall of Marshall. You won't need anything but a tape recorder sized thing, mkc'd right with 24 channels.

    I have the LBX11 and it does the same for me, big jump in volume with the slightest adjustment, I play it through my twonotes reload so I can crank it but keep the volume low, and it sounds great, half the price of the runt! Changed the tubes (shipped with crap no brand Chinese tubes ) in my lbx ii almost immediately and most of the hissing went straight away . The small amount left on the blue channel is delt with using a gate in the loop on lowest setting if I feel the need . Fantastic sounding amp btw which prompted me to sell all of my Marshall's because I wasn't using them anymore . Paid £420 shipped for mine , is a 20w runt nearly x3 the money better ?

    Ok right up your alley Phil, I want to run stereo for the first time and want my first tube amp to pair with a great USA made mid 90s peavey bandit 112 80w with the scorpion 12" - the clean with pedals is epic, but now I want an affordable *under 750 but it has to be light enough to carry upstairs.
    Ive had 11 spinal fusions and I cant carry much my wife and I are in our 50s ISH so yea its for home recording. I was considering the marshall dsl40c with the new light creamback, or you recommended that super champ X2, I like the price and I did like it in the store with their guitar.
    I too am more of a strat guy than a prs but I own almost all types including the epip93, prs c24se and epi LP and a new duo sonic humbucker/single. but my #1 is the Strat I sent you a pic of wearing your shirt in blue last week its usa HSS rosewood 2010.
    So, playing pink floyd, to ac/dc to hendrix, and SRV, Bonamassa to BB king. Thoughts and rec to pair that up, OH i have a sm57 only so Id also need another mic LOL, My interface is a scarlett 2i2 into last years macbook pro into ableton live suite 9.7 beta.
    Ok did I leave anything out? I use all the picks I can find, collect them too like you! And strings are dadario, balanced tension 9-40s WHEW, main pedals arfe digitech trio, behringer ts808, Hardwire DL-8 and Digitech DEATHMETAL I think all but the behringer are stereo.. Ok Ill hang up and listen - Rick in Seattle hehe

    i can't find a simple answer on the runt 20. is it possible to play with the runt 20's clean channel with a full band? not metal or anything crazy like that, but more like typical cover band top 40 gig or country and singer/songwriter gigs.

      wheresallthezombies Absolutely. I have never had my Runt 20 above 1/4 of the way master volume at gigs. I run direct out to get some sound to the pa also, but plenty of stage volume to hear myself over a loud drummer.

    These are pretty different amps. The Friedman is more my style for sure.

    the friedman seems more usable in my opinion, it has a variety to the gain channel where it can do a slightly overdriven almost vox-like tone and work it up to a very high gain sound. the EVH seemed to only do high gain tones, and was extremely noisy as well

    Why are these amps being compared? They aren't meant for the same style....

    • @ritsmond

      Andrew Deck They are not? I think he made this because they are both high gain amps. Or have I mixed up the Runt and the Pink Taco?

    Runt kills the LBX. it's hard to tell in a video, but if you've ever played one for yourself the Friedman is addicting to play, much more responsive. LBX, not so much...

    Why do none of these lunchbox heads have on board reverb? For the money you are paying, its annoying that you have to add a reverb pedal.

    • @ritsmond
      @ritsmond 7 років тому

      You mean spring reverb? To fit in the small amp case, the spring would have to be so small it wouldn't sound any good.

    • @phillipgohorns
      @phillipgohorns 7 років тому

      No, I meant digital reverb which I assume would only add about $20 to the cost of goods to these micro heads. I have a dark terror and it annoys me that I have to add a reverb pedal to the effects loop.
