You could fairly judge how good an amp is by how much the person demoing it is enjoying themselves. If they are coldly walking through the feature set and strumming the same few chords and lead lines, they are probably not digging the amp. You can see that Leon is having fun playing it, which, for me, is all the incentive I need to buy.
Wow, that little amp unleashed your inner fire...great playing dude!
Best review of this Amp ever. Anytime I get old on my 5153 I come back to this and I'm back on the evh train.
Killer pinch harmonics and grinding riffage Leon, EVH would be proud \m/ It’s a pretty good value amp aimed at Rock and metal shredders that don’t need 50 or 100 watt heads in a nice compact form factor \m/
Lots of sound coming from that tiny lunch box !!! Love the mids cranked for that old school metal and shred sound.
I just picked up the LBX III. What a little MONSTER!!
Love EVH amps!!
Wow that was some serious shred! Nice video, even better playing!
Thanks so much. I do a little bit of this stuff with my band Ragdoll if you're looking for some new stuff to listen to.
Amp is cool, but really it's all about Dino Riders on the screen :D
I had that very episode on VHS, (I was even recalling the some of the dialogue to the scene’s that were playing in the background), but the moment where the brontosaurus steps out and fires energy missles from the launchers attached to its neck was freaking epic.
Leon, great video and demo! I love how you always successfully merge shredding with noodling! Shroodling? LOL, great stuff! Cheers from the USA!
Awesome! Thank you so much for the review I learn so much about gear and lessons from you!
The thing I like about the EVH amps most is that they are very versatile unlike most amps that seem to sound great doing one or two tones.
Far out the best sounding demo on the web. You might Just sold me one...
Wow, that little thing sounds AMAZING! I saw a used one for sale locally.....quite reasonable. Man, I may need to pick it up!
Just bought this amp. Can't wait to get it.
Greta video Leon!!
Late to the party but imma out to pick up an lbxI and saw this video from you and couldn't pass it up. Badass little amps. Have a big 5150 60 watt monster and want this little guy to move between band practices.
Sounds really really good
Some Reb Beach action at the end!! Nice
Awesome lil amp!
Great review
That Ace guitar! 👌
Internet connection stop at 5:24 no more dinosaurs battle
God damn man, you make that thing sound amazing! I’m thinking about getting this or the PRS MT15. Or maybe both. I’ve got a Marshall 1960a for my main cab- with a DSL100 sitting on top but want to get some lunchbox heads to stack up and switch between. I want the Mini Rectifier too!!
Id like to see you making a video like this with the Peavey 6505Mh!
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘
8:26 breaking the shred barrier. 💥
The Resonance knob makes a nice difference
This is the best demo of this great amp that I have seen and excellent playing. The STR guitar complements very well, do you care to comment on which pickups do you use on it?
Thanks so much! It comes stock with mojotone PAF clones which complement the insane gain of the amp.
Thank you for helping me make my decision on a hi gain amp by actually playing and recording the sound of the amps in your videos. Most people just talk. The riffs you play also help us hear the saturation: those 80's high bar chord/diad /triad things with the chunk.
I chose this little box even though I have a soft spot for the marshall and soldano. Couldn't beat the affordability and carryability.
"Affordability" runs nearly 1000$ new for a 15w, when a used 6505 runs 300-500$ lol. It's a wonderful amp but lets not kid ourselves that EVH gear is stupid expensive.
Doesn't mean I'm not gonna buy a used one though.. They seem to be around for 500$ here and there
For metal yes the blue channel works great with a boost. But the bigger version with the red channel. No boost needed. Actually seems to make the already compressed killer metal tone worse. I have the combo with el34s. Love it. Add a noise suppressor in the effects loop. Thats it
I have the first version EVH LBX. Just a fun little amp to play.
There's a lot of variety in there, and it's so compact and feature packed. Great fun.
I could go for some lunch 😎😜
Literally all i could do was watch Dino Riders in the background. I loved that cartoon when i was a kid. Hahaha
"There's so much gain on this" you make it sound like that's a bad thing. Fantastic demo though!
i have this amp connect to a 1x12 evh 5150 III cab and i love it, i would only swap it for a mesa mark V but i can't afford one so thats the best amp i ever owned.
asr 01 send it to Kruse kontrol amps too get nodded after mods its really best
Safe money and buy the Mesa. It will take some time but still its worth it
I‘ve problems with several pedals connected with this amp. The Les lius from Lovepedal for example. I can‘t play this pedal with the gain channel. The background noise is terrible.
Hi! I've just bought it and I notice a pop sound when changing from blue to green channel, when connected to a 100w cabinet the pop sound is really annoying, ¿Can you tell me if this happens to your unit? Thanks!
Arturo Galán doesn't happen to mine, via Amp switch OR foot switch. Check all your tubs are in clean. Use deoxit
Nice demo, I heard that the Lbox I has better blue Channel. But this one sounds really good.
LUIS MATOS this blue channel has more gain than the lbx I blue channel, but.less than the red channel.
Cool video
Would you get this or the LBX 1 to cover Van Halen spectrum of tones? Can you you get the Red channel Soldano sound with this if you crank blue channel? I don't really care about clean, I have other amps for, but I've seen in demos where cranking green channel get a Van Halen 1 sound.
Great demo! What's the best way to run this in stereo?
6:00 mark is where the Welly begins! Are these 6l6 tunes? Brilliant.
The facial expressions says it all...
i have one... they will get very very clean. You need the gain at like 7-8 and run the volume up. i could tell the high gain increased presence and increased mid setting you used pushed the mic a little too hard, but it does sound good. as far as that resonance control..in my opinion the way it works when you hear it in person is that it has a crazy thing where it makes the cab sound larger. It sounds different in person but its something new to me in all the amps ive ever played.
It's impossible to capture that amp in a room feel on YT but the resonance really does make it beefy and 3D.
yeah from playing it i dont think there would be anyway at all to capture it with a mic, but i love it. great review btw, i haven't seen too many people reviewing this yet.
@@LeonTodd Did you try running two dual room mics ? Like 4-6 feet away, opposite sides. Usually when i do that I can really capture the warmth of roominess an amp like this would provide
Ratt 🐭 I'm a 5150 freak it is the modern metal sound I've got a block letter and a 3 and they are gain machine's, but I've never bothered with the lunch box I'll just use the axe fx for quiet time... who am I kidding I use it for everything but I like to know that if there's a need to wipe out cities ive got my amps just in case. 🤘
Hi nice demo and playing can you tell me where is this amp made?
i find that once i get to about 11 oclock on the master volume, i dont get any more volume after that. when i hit about 1oclock on the gain knob (blue) theres no change after that either. my eq is similar to your 11:30 time. great little amp!
I notice the gain difference in mine after 11 but it’s slight. I’m using Tung Sol 12AX7s in my preamp sections so that could be the difference. The Tung Sols sound the best in this amp to me IMHO. I tried JJ, which work the best in the first LBX but they didn’t cut it for me in this one. Hope this helps.
Call me crazy, but I think it sounds better without the boost and with the mids and highs pushed. Cheers. Great demo.
As EVH would say "if it sounds good it is good". Great tones all around with this one.
Dino Riders!!!!
I loved that show, was obsessed with dinosaurs as a young fella, think I had a couple of the toys back in the day. Might have to YT some episodes
Dude, this and Dino Saucers made me so happy. Then Jurassic Park happened in the theaters and OH BOY.
Very cool man, I subbed. Just out of curiosity...What mods does that JCM 2000 on the right have? I noticed that red and white logo on it...i have a dsl50 myself and i love it, but i have been wanting to mod it. Great video!
The logo came loose and never got replaced so I put a band sticker there. AFAIK that's the only mod done to it
I'm very curious to see how the amp sounds through some more compressed pickups like EMG 81/85's. I'm selling my Explorer (Don't ever play it, was my dream guitar but my Tele is way more fun to play and more of a managable guitar so to speak) and thinking about picking this up or a used 6505+ or 5150 (Peavey, used EVH gear costs as much as a damn JVM) but this seems way more versatile. I'm wondering if I got it if I would retire/sell my Legacy 1 as my primary amp for shows/recording.
Although.. the EL34 EVH looks and sounds incredible. If only it wasn't 3500$.. :/
theyve got the el34 version in a 50 watt config, and i mean really unless youre playing giant live arenas i dont think 50 watts will be much of a difference since 100 watts is nearly only 30 percent louder in the amp realm and the 50 watt goes for like 1100 new you can get used for like 899 most the time man. i played it and loved it but still way expensive for me so i just got the matching cab lol.
Is it possible to gig with this amp? I kinda don't feel like hauling a 50-100W monster 5150 iii around.
"Leon Todd 1 year ago
I'm surprised how much I liked it, you could easily gig this amp."
Interesting how RATT riffs always sound better without a pedal on. Clarity seems to be the key aspect of making 80's tones stand out and jump out of the mix.
StratMatt777 first two records were done on a Jose modded.marshall
Plays lay it down the way I have to without Warren's monster stretch.
at 8:25 i got this euphoric sensation and bought this amp
Great review as usual man
Can you comment on....Other than wattage does this version of the LBX give up much in regards to tone when compared to the big brother 50 watt 5150 III
Thank you sir
I really need to try them side by side, but the differences in the power section definitely add up. This little guy is a bit saggier and compressed whereas my experience with the 50W is that it's a tad more aggressive and tight.
Great demo. If the most innovative & creative guitarist in the history of mankind designs gear shouldn’t it be great? Yes it should and yes it is! Most people will not check out EVH gear because of Ed’s logo. They don’t want to be labeled a fan boy. It’s sad that so many people are bound by what others say and let that keep them from great things. His amps are amazing, his Wolfgang guitars are great sounding and great playing. His striped series are phenomenal. One tone is all you get but that one tone is the greatest. They stay in tune and they are inexpensive. His gear is as great as his playing.
Can effect mod pedals be plugged in front or should be in effects loop? In front, wont it effect gain channel sound?
Jeez that thing is beast. If a pedal was used on it do you think you'd need a noisegate? im upgrading from a cheap combo amp/pedal and im used to constant hissing.
nvm right when i resume the video i see you are using a pedal and it sounds bad ass, i think im getting this badboy
the low end sounds a bit grungy. It got better when you turned down the resonance. Maybe the ribbon mic picked up a bit to much low end? Anyway love the evh stuff. I had a 6505 and didn't like it that much, but the evh I heard were all pretty good. Try that boost on the "clean" channel. It can sound amazing!! Allmost any hardcore band I love plays this amp. BTW: sick playing!
nah man it aint the mic. this amp is very boomy. i think maybe the resonance was designed to make a 112 cabinet have the balls of a 412 cabinet, however i personally agree that its a bit much, and im running a 212
Best small cabinet to pair this with suggestions? I know there is an EVH 5150 III 1x12 which seems the natural choice, but maybe some have tried and liked other options.
anything with V30's will sound good. Although I've heard some rumors of the dark arts using mesa cabs with it and it sounding like satan's asshole ripping open
You are absolutely right boss, Fractal is closest in recreating the three dimensional sound of a well designed tube amp....I was about to buy an LT, i wish Fractal had financing options....
Upon trying Kemper, Helix Lt and an AX8, I can attest that fractal sounds more open with better mids and defined lows, without any fizz..it is 5-10% more accurate than Kemper and helix respectively...by way The PRS MT15W head is killer, sounds like a Deizel and twin reverb:)
I hear bees
Show me the power child
* I'd like to say * That I'm down on my knees today
How is it for bedroom levels? Or is this just too loud for that?
just recently bought this amp how did you get the green channel to break up like that? did you have the volume cranked?
I am thinking of buying one too so I need to ask you: how happy are you about it?
Kote Kutalia extremely happy with it, I don't want to sound like I'm endorsing EVH but this amp is just really versatile I play from jazz blues rock metal and it does all of them really nicely so very happy with it!!
@3:45 "Stonery and Doomy sounding" :-)
Great video man!... I loved evh until I bought the 50 Watt head , the first one the 3rd channel failed to turn on with major popping when channel switching, then the second new one I get replacing the first one worked for 3 weeks before popping started in the switching then the effect button on the footswitch failed to work and turn on effects.... Took it back and went with orange dark terror and 2x12 cab to match....simple and heavy...but I'd like to get another evh someday...what's your opinion on the evh el34 heads man?.... Awesome playing by the way bro!.... Your a truely talented dude
Hey Leon are you gonna get a new lrs mt15 as well?....was thinking on getting that and would love to hear your opinion and see your review...
thank for using real mics ....sounds great
🙋♂️
A bit late to the party, but a quick question for you Leon. Would it go to Plexi territory on the green channel? Ultimately I want to run a lunchbox amp because I’m traveling a lot, with a Plexi channel and a 5150ish channel. I like my cleans close to breakup anyway, so a pure clean channel isn’t a priority.
It's closer to the JTM45/Bluesbreaker kind of smooth gain as opposed to the Plexi bark. The Ceriatone Son of Yeti (which I recently demo'd) does the Plexi/modern high gain thing just about better than anything else IMO.
Leon Todd Oh I see, then the EVH lunchbox is out of the question. The bad thing is that I can’t try the Son of Yeti, neither the Victory Kraken here in Greece. I’ll either have to buy blindly, or compromise with something else.
If you can try an EVH it's worth it, I'm sure with a bit more tweaking you could get it Plexi-ish but the form factor does limit how close you can get. The Kraken is a cool amp that has a JCM800/5150 vibe but I liked the Son of yeti the most; plus it's a lot cheaper. Have you tried the Jet City stuff?
Leon Todd You mean the 20w version of the Yeti? Can you gig with that kind of wattage? I was a modeler guy for years, so I don’t really know. The Kraken is very expensive indeed, but I guess you are paying for 50w of very good tones in a 7kg lunchbox. Ceriatone has some dealers in Europe, I might get in touch with them about the Son of Yeti price. If it’s close to the US price it would be an ideal solution.
TYCO RC!
Are you mic'ing a cab in the room or using impulses? I have played a few of those and they sounded alot better in person than they do here.
Sounds like you're running the preamp signal direct and using some kind of IR?
Right at the beginning he says that he's using a Marshall cab with v30s and an SM57 and a ribbon mic...
The Orange Dark Terror sounded meaner in your vid
can you play blues and classic rock, guns n roses with this amp?by the way i love ratt and van halen
how does it dow with playing at bedroom volumes? looking to invest in a new amp for practice and gigs and I'm seriously considering this amp
Fucking well!
Are u sure there valve. They sound like transistor
Since you've gigged with the Dark Terror, could the LBX/LBXII definitely be in the same ballpark for small gigs?
Awesome! Thanks for the reply. I actually just picked up an Orange Kim Root terror recently and just waiting for it to arrive. Then I came across an LBXII for real cheap on the local used market and definitely tempted :D
You talking about Charlie's?
Damn. I don't use a lot of gain, so I've never had an interest in EVH amps. But, this thing sounds pretty killer.
6:10 where is this riff from?
Generic riffage! You might like some of this though if you liked that ua-cam.com/video/Bo5KrylsNYY/v-deo.html
Sorry, didn’t hear a word of what you said. Was trying to remember the show that was playing in the background.
Hey Leon, have you compared this to the 6505mh?
I have just picked one up. Also for your preamp diary’s have you tried the old Randall RM4 ? I have some good modded modules if you would like to try. Might be some good content for you.
I live in Perth so I could bring some stuff around for you to demo if you like
The modules I have for the Randall are a Marshall RandyRhoads model which is killer! A framus cobra mod and a SLO mod, which would be cool to put up against your hotrod50
Never been a big boost fan. I play this with the gain at 5.5 to 6 and it’s metal heaven for me. I see why people use a boost though. Plus, Eddie doesn’t use one lol
It's just tone shaping dude. Not necessarily to get more gain, but different gain. Just adds a different flavor of tightness, EQ, and the midrange shifts a bit. Just sauce on top of the amp. So many people use boost pedals in front. If Eddie does or not, we'll never fully know for sure. Just because there's not one on his board, doesn't mean he doesn't have some sort of tone shaping piece of gear in line.
Personally if I need to boost that beast I'd use my sparkle drive ,but with that gain might not need it,
Yeah, I don't run a screamer anymore, I opted for EH East River Drive because the tone shuffling is a lot better. It still tightens up the bottom end but there's something about the mix that makes feel good
But I also run a Legacy 1 which surprisingly does extremely well for a metal amp considering it's more known for it's clean channel
such a shame this amp doesn't have a headphone cab sim output, it needs to be played through a cab and doesn't allow silent practice or recording.
Very good demo but too much resonance. You can hear some serious flub but without it the amp in person sounds bad ass.
Is it me or does the blue channel give you heavy slo100 vibes?
I played a used one at guitar center and could not believe how loud it was. On 1 it was blowing me out of the hi end room. Nice guitar face Leon.
