      I started playing in 2008 and there were already detailed guides online with pictures and short videos to show different types of drifts and other techs (grass zigzag, adherence tricks like doing a S trajectory on a S-shaped drop down or the trick to drop optimally on an inclined booster at map start, etc..). But you learn much much more from competing against replays on lots of maps while wr hunting.

    mastering drifting can take hours he says. More like years

    • @Wilker_uwu
      @Wilker_uwu 4 роки тому +15

      it took me several years to learn that the treshold for standard drifts (as opposed to neo slides) is specifically when you reach the third gear, regardless of speed. that avoids lots of missteps whenever you decide the time to start drifting.

    • @IroAppe
      @IroAppe 4 роки тому +6

      @@Wilker_uwu What is a standard drift vs. neo slide?

    • @Wilker_uwu
      @Wilker_uwu 4 роки тому +17

      @@IroAppe a regular drift is basically explained in the video - if you have enough momentum and are in a gear where the grip on the ground is slightly weaker, and you brake, you slide in the asphalt to get a better angle in tight curves and turns - while a neo slide aims to emulate a drift at much lower speeds, where the grip is too much to be as simple as braking like in the regular drift.
      i mentioned this because even experienced players often have issues with those manouvers, and often end
      up doing "noslides", where the car just slows down while turning when braking. the main reason for that, is while in most of the history of the franchise the interfaces and visual feedback used to be a lot more minimalist and straightforward, the games also had an accessibility issue, where vital information is often shown in only one way, like the acceleration and gear changes in Trackmania Nations Forever and Trackmania 2: Stadium only being perceived in the sound effects but with no visual feedback.
      in a sidenote, if you're interested in how accessibility can be improved in these aspects in other ways, check this video on Gamemaker's Toolkit ^^ ua-cam.com/video/4NGe4dzlukc/v-deo.html it is a bit offtopic but still relevant somewhat

    For those wondering about how to manage ice, here's what I've learned:
    - Always pointing your entire car towards the place where you want to go for gradual turns can help. So for a gradual 45 degree turn, point your car 45 degrees at the start of the turn and maintain it.
    - Never steer anywhere at the very start of a race on ice. After that, do very gentle adjustments.
    - Make very smooth adjustments with analog controls rather than sudden taps of harsher tire movement.
    - The more steering and adjustments you make the slower you will go.
    - For a right quarterpipe bank pretend you are a bobsled. Line up with the left side first and keep your car pointed parallel with the center line of the road. Your car should line up in the red marked area of the bank for maximum speed. If you are able to line up your car perfectly without any bobbing, I find it is usually best to steer slightly in the opposite direction of the turn so you are slightly higher on the bank for a gentler ride.
    - For sharp flat turns, turn your car between 90 and 180 degrees then turn sharply in the opposite direction of the turn. Your tires should somewhat point in the direction of where you want to be heading. Exit the turn by straightening your car out quickly in the direction of travel rather than gradually can help get more speed. Also, while holding down the gas, tap the break during the initial turn and your car will rotate much faster, allowing you to get it at the correct angle for the turn faster. You can also use snow on the side of the road for a bit more traction during higher speed turns. On Summer 2020 25, the right sharp flat ice turn after the reactor boost can amazingly be done at full speed without letting go of the gas. Doing all of this right makes you feel like a boss.
    - Do not do bug turns on ice. Instead, start straight then do the process for a sharp flat turn.
    - Rarely you can turn your car around about 180 degrees while breaking then drive straight. This will slow your car down much faster than just breaking.
    - If you do all of this right, you should never let off the gas.
    - Combining all of these techniques in just the right ways for each turn is crucial for getting excellent times. I doubt this is even everything.

      It's not much less than half a second. But saying 0.3 seconds sounds pretty weird. The point is simply that you have to hold steering for a bit. Once you get that you will learn the finer mechanics of drifting by yourself because atleast now you know what consistently allows you to drift.

    Been playing since the original and sunrise came out 15 years ago and am only now learning that there's an option for manual transmission?
    Lots of great essential tips in here. Nadeo have honestly changed the game so much since I last played that I'll have to re-watch your video to get the hang of some techniques again.

      I don't think there's manual transmission, is just that you can use the automatic transmission in your favour.

    Very good content.
    I still think, that each of these should be explained even more in-depth.
    Like airbraking -> what are the exact desired angles of ground contact an what do these angles depend on (usually u want to land rear first; risk a full flat touch on cement, but always aim for rear first on dirt; I think sometimes front first is good too, but don't know when).
    Shifting -> I think the gear up sound is longer than the time you should not steer, so which part of the gear up sound exactly is the part I'm not supposed to steer on.
    Also: let's say I go for speedometer without sound: is it possible to release steering at 160 and return steering while still at 160 without losing extra speed? Can either be at 160?
    Drifting -> Is speed drifting a thing? How should I drift around super wide curves (always most tight? When do I drift wider to conserve more speed?) when do I avoid the Randstein?
    Ground contact -> these seemed super natural to me at first until I learned that even on some jumps where you are 100% bound to lose contact it is still faster to swerve diagonally!

      cool story bob incoming XD: airbraking: this is usually used on uncalculated jumps where you are not landing smooth with a ramp. generally you want to air brake so that you land with your car parralel to the surface you are landing on. However if the landing is smooth it is better to get a nosedown or land with the rear wheels to get grip sooner. also landing front first or rear first heavily depends on the situation. often landing rear first can force the rear to lift off the ground after landing whereas landing front first can keep them planted on the ground resulting in more time accelerating. it also generally easier to get a fat nose-down than a rear down but all this is super generalizing and it will come with experience. shifting: when the car shifts it is more about if the car is sliding rather than if you are steering. when the car shifts optimally the sound is pretty darn quick, near instant, so I stop steering (often counter steering) and straighten out right before before I hear it. (you want the car to have fullgrip on the surface if only for an instant while shifting) and then you can go back to drifitng after the shift. However if you are still sliding while the car is shifting up, you will continue to hear the revs drop for much longer than you would otherwise. With good enough timing, you can minimize the time spent going straight and more time steering by straightening out as late as possible and returning back to a drift as soon as possible after the shift. Drifting: yes speed drifting is a thing but it is a sort of advanced technique which I would learn after learning the rest of these techiniques. It only applies when going faster than 410 though but is essential for getting good times on fullspeed maps. ua-cam.com/video/0oiXDC7zB_s/v-deo.html this tutorial by sinasappel can get you started. for regular drifting, your drift often depends on the track after the corner, if there is a long straight after the drift, you want to approach from as wide as possible, clip the apex, and exit as wide as possible to get the maximum possible speed. if there is another drift corner close after the one you are about to do, it would be better to take a tighter line because you will be slowing down for the next corner anyway and you don't need as much speed, rather a shorter distance traveled would be more beneficial. Also no randstein in this game. Ground contact: the reason that sometimes swerving diagonally is faster even when leaving the ground is that you are either driving off, driving onto, or landing onto an incline. In the case of landing on a downwards incline, swerving results in less forwards distance being travelled in the air and more horizontal distance. This means you land on an earlier part of the incline which will be higher in elevation than landing on a later part of the incline. Essentially its the same effect as releasing but this way lets you keep more speed. This means your car lands sooner and you can start accelerating sooner. In the case of driving off an upwards incline surface onto a flat surface, jumping digaonally means that your car gets less airtime because the more horizontal you are driving on an incline, the less vertical momentum you have which means that gravity will take less time to accelerate you back to the ground. I hope you enjoyed my short novel and if you have any more questions that I can help with, feel free to ask and I can write a part 2. Otherwise I hope I helped :)
