I’m glad they finally made something like this. I couldn’t tell you the number of comments of people complaining about how they just want a simple truck with 4WD with a locker. Well, here you go. Cloth seats, bare minimum safety tech, locker and Apple Car play. If people actually put money where their mouth is, they should sell a boat load of these.
4low can get you in and out of many different places... 80% of offroad driving is skill based, all you realistically need is ground clearance and a great set of tires! A lot of people underestimate, or don't understand, that traction is the most important where the rubber meets the road
I agree with everything you've said. But to play devils advocate, you can run a less aggressive tire if you have a locker, and be equally as capable. On a daily driver, I appreciate the all around comfort and mpg of a mild AT vs an aggressive AT or hybrid.
@@nismomike3182 I own a '10 Frontier, no locker but I do have the ABLS system that comes with the truck! I've found that it emulates "lockers" quite well, as it's more aggressive in 4low
no amount of tech can beat out built in dna imo. Wranglers aren't amazing off road because of their 4x4 system (though a Rubicon is awfully impressive), it's all about how it can manage to keep tires on the ground and not bash into things. A stubby front bumper on even the most basic wrangler with a good set of tires can get you just about anywhere
I'd say a solid front axle is one of those needs as far as keeping traction and takes that "20%" of offroading up to more of a 30 or 40%. Having four wheels on the ground is certainly a factor in maintaining traction.
I like how you said there's not many "toys in the toolbox." Key word, "toys." The Trail is a no-nonsense off-road tool. It's a great throwback to a basic yet solid truck with all of the modern creatures' comforts that you actually need. Things have gotten carried away. There's definitely a place for this truck.
Ive had my 2021 SR5 4×4 trail edition in army green now for 14 months and i love it. Im not off roading a lot so dont need the trd, but this truck gets me through snow, ice, and high water great. Its a comfortable vehicle for long drives (as long as you don't have 2 adult size kids sitting in the back seats). Ive had absolutely no problems with it. The tires definitely pick up nails and screws on the roads though because of the off road tire treads. I drive it out on the beach and my wife and i camp out of the back, using the power outlet in the bed for our electronics. This truck is way better then the Colorado or canyons ive been in. It looks a lot better too.
I like try new editing style you’re using. Great review as usual! I am really digging the fact the Toyota ditched a-trac on the Trail edition. A-trac is great! But, throwing a rear locker in a lower cost trail truck is so awesome.

It's more of an appearance package tbh. You can get a base TRD Off Road for a bit less and get better seats, push/remote start, multi terrain select, crawl control, etc. Great looking package, but I wish it was priced lower.

You’re supposed to take the headrest out when you fold the back seats and there’s two holes in the seat that you can place and store the headrest when it’s folded down. It’s been like that in the tacoma for a long time now. Surprised he doesn’t know this after all the tacomas he’s reviewed but I do believe he’s still one of the best reviewers on UA-cam and actually off road tests these vehicles on his own time unlike other reviewers who will only do it if manufacturers flies them out to a preplanned easy off road course press event or more like a dirt road with a few little dips in it and a tiny little hill to climb up and down so they know for sure it won’t be difficult for the trucks to make them seem more capable. But I Really love the unique bronze wheels you get on this along with the slight lift, heritage grill and of course most importantly a REAR LOCKER for an sr5 is a game changer. Also that air dam doesn’t normally come on this trim, maybe cause it was a press vehicle, I’ve seen another reviewer point that out also but when you actually buy it, it won’t come with that air dam which would get ripped off on the trails off roading and eats away at the ground clearance.
I really don’t understand why people are always complaining about leg position. It feels fine to me and I’ve driven many full size trucks for work. It’s more similar to a car but it’s not uncomfortable at all. I am 6’ and find no issues with it at all
I drove my 22 sr tacoma from New Mexico to Alaska. Its a traditional truck without all the extras for people that just like to say they have all the nice gadgets.
You never mentioned the ECT button that all tacoma's have, that makes the shifting quicker by dropping it down a gear if i remember right. It is noticeable and should have been mentioned.
I'd love to see your videos attempting to go up test courses in just 2H first. I've been impressed what I can do with traction control without ever going into 4H or 4L in a Toyota. Thanks!

I was super excited for this Trail Edition. Love the looks and improved capability. Extremely disappointed on price. It doesn't make sense to me. This should be $36-38k. A TRD Off-Road 4x4 starts at $38,305. Hell even a TRD Pro starts at $46,585 which is only a couple grand more (before markups) than the tested truck. Doesn't add up
I would definitely trade in but only if this was available in a Long Bed. After owning a long bed, all the short beds look like that are missing something. Plus you can carry a lot more with the 6ft bed.
For anyone watching who is confused by his demonstration of the difference between an open diff and a locked diff, the locker is to hopefully prevent you from getting stuck. Using it only after you have already become stuck is like putting the condom on afterwards... Also, hill decent control is not magic. It just modulates the brake and accelerator pedals for you. Your ABS system will already do it's best to keep you pointed straight when braking, and it doesn't give you any extra gearing.. It's a convenience feature...

This is all you really need. You don't need all those different ride modes if you know how to drive, and even if you don't you learn fast. 4 low with a locker is all that you really need. How many old taco are out there killing it with just a rear locker and lift kit.?
Love your reviews Ryan. What I do is rate the vehicle based upon your critique of the tech. If you like it I'm probably not going to because I hate all of the tech in the industry. This truck appeals to me because it offers all I think is good. First of all we have to start talking about speed limits and fuel consumption.
When folding down the back seats, remove the head rest and there are actual holes on the flipped up seat designed for you to attach the headrest so you don't just slap it down in the bin lol
I'm looking at a tacoma. The back rear storage is a huge plus. I'm looking into moving to the UP in Michigan and I would live alone so I won't need to carry passengers
These don’t have a sport mode as you saw by trying to manually shift. It’s simply a top gear limiter. That’s why when you asked it to go to 3rd it stayed in 2nd.
@@tieoneon1614 my grandma got the truck stuck in the ditch, they pulled the truck out with a rope ties to that, idk if it matter but it was also on a steep upwards incline making even more weight on the point.. seems like a perfectly capable point to pull probably about 5000 lbs of force.. anything over that would probably be risky..
Actually the TRD Off Road Premiums don't use the "vegan" leather the rest of Toyota's vehicle line-up uses, but rather real "cow leather". At least up to 2022. I doubt they changed that for 2023. It's VERY hard leather. It wears well, but encourages sweating when it's hot. Probably an option I'd skip were I to do it over again (recreational truck used almost exclusively for overlanding and astronomy camping). Cloth copes with heat and cold dissipation better than hard-faced leather. Thanks for the video review Ryan. Your great camera work sold me a set of OE 16" Trail Edition bronze tone wheels and the OE Trail Edition grille for my truck! Oh, with respect to the seating position, yes it is quite odd. Much more like a 1980s sports car than a pickup truck or SUV. It fits me fine, but I'm NOT proportionate. I have very long legs and arms and a very short torso, proportionately. When friends of more normal proportions drive the truck, they have the same complaints as those you shared in the video. The next gen Tacoma will be built on the new Tundra platform so I would expect the seating position to be more in line with the present Tundra than this 3rd gen Tacoma. On the off road niceties front, the vehicle has more than the rear locker if the comparison set includes crossover offroadified CUVs. It has a proper 2-speed transfer case, which is probably its greatest advantage over any AWD system, the rear locker, proper factory skid plates and big sidewalls with small diameter wheels rather than the too-common converse when cross-shopping toughened CUVs. It's a nice looking vehicle. It would have been great for them to skip the in-bed plastic storage boxes and lower the price to separate it from the TRD Off Road trim. You get a lot more (better shocks/suspension and additional off road nice-to-have driving aids for only a very little bit more money.
There are two holes in the fold up seat to slide the head rest in. They have to be removed to completely fold down the seats. I’m still trying to figure out how to pull the rear footstep out for climbing into the box, but I’m too lazy to read the manual. 😂
I just bought the 2022 Tacoma TDR off road, and there is no navigation system built in and I keep getting the runaround that there isn’t a factory navigation system that can be installed, and that I have to use CarPlay. Yet there is an entire section in the manual specifically targeted towards the onboard navigation system (which did not come pre-installed on my vehicle). Do you know anything about this or a possible glitch/fix so I can get a navigation system installed and not have to rely on apple carplay? I can’t seem to find an answer to this anywhere online, and the 10 customer service/dealers/service managers seem to be clueless as well 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ Thanks in advance, if you have any suggestions!
It's funny how so many people talk shit about the Tacoma V6 being slow but damn give it a little credit it has over 💯 horsepower more than the 4-banger! I'm coming from an accord 2.0t touring that was tuned, I ran a 13.8@103mph this Tacoma does not feel fast but it's definitely quick and it pulls the truck respectable. It's definitely not geared to be an aggressive motor but she does run 💪 tho 👍👍💯
I have a Tacoma Sport 4x4 with no rear locker, no crawl control or any of that other stuff. I go off roading with it all the time in Arizona and that truck takes me everywhere I want to go. Through mud, water, steep hills, rocky roads, etc. I go into the most remote places with no problems. Don’t let them fool you that you need all that fancy stuff, it’s just not true
Just a couple of quick things: You can build a cheaper TRD Offroad on the Toyota site but good luck getting one. Tacoma's are allocation and the dealer's aren't ordering bare bones trucks. In my area (southern NH) SR5 is 38.5K, TRD Offroad manual is $41K, Trail Edition is $43K, and TRD Off-road auto is $46K. The Trail Edition is a great looking truck and IMHO better looking than the TRD Offroad. That's why I bought mine.
I find it interesting that some refer to the Tacoma has old. The Porsche 911 is an old classic that has been tweaked and improved over the decades....so why not Toyota. Sales numbers prove Toyota is doing it right. This 3.5 v6 may be not the most peppy engine BUT gas is now $2 03/L here in Ontario. The v6 is not bad on fuel.
An SR5 Trail Edition for MORE than a TRD Off-Road? Absolutely insane. Fewer features for more money, only in Toyotaland does that make any sense. Still has rear drum brakes, too.
FYI, as I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong), the locking rear diff works in 4lo only and less than 5 mph. Toyotas electronic traction control maybe brake actuated, but it's pretty damn good.
I agree. I just have the normal SR5, and I constantly screw with the Auto LSD. Im glad I didnt pay $ for a locker cuz this works fricking great. Just needs a little wheel spin to actuate.
Someone may have already mentioned but MTS could have technically helped the rear wheel spin yes but since you were locked if you would have just feathered the throttle you would have had the same effect, MTS doesn't give you more traction it utilizes the available traction, fully locked is going to "accept" all the traction/friction the wheel can create in any given condition.
all anyone who buys a Tacoma needs, is the KDmax pro tune. It will fix the trans mission hunting, etc and will make it a much more enjoyable driving experience.. also on that log situation.... press traction control once, so that the ELSD is on see if it does better..
I used to have issues with the trans hunting, but I think it just had to figure out my driving style, I've been getting 24-26 mpg on highway and the short roads 24
A 2022 SR5 Trail Edition without any other options costs close to 41K. You'd be better off getting a TRD Off Road which gives you more standard features with some leftover money for options.
I find this model to be strange. In Nov. 2022, the TRD Off-road starts MSRP is $5000 less than the SR5 Trail. If you get the TRD Off-Road with the Double Cab, it's still $2000 less, and comes with more Off-road features including upgraded suspension. Apart from some cosmetic differences, I'm not sure why I would pick the Trail vs. the TRD Off-road. I liked the idea of a basic off-road truck until I saw the price. For my money, I'll take a TRD Off-road.
I would rather get a base trd off road package for 2 grand less and option for a trd exhaust, and the toyota roof rack for kayaks. Then buy the front spoiler for better mpg. Someday I would like to venture off road and do some light four wheeling in the woods nothing crazy. I had 1994 toyota dx 5 speed manual 22re 4 cylinder reg cab 4x4 years ago and put bfg tires on it and had a blast in the woods.
I got a '22 4x4 TRD off-road with 6-speed manual basic 📦 tho. 120k warranty 7 years $41,500 I think I'd rather have the off-road than the trail edition 🤷 I just feel like the off-road you get a little bit more + I prefer manual transmission (if good) & if you're going to save $3,000 why not
Honestly if you know what you’re doing you don’t need more than this all those features on the trd pro are awesome don’t get me wrong but think about it for many years we didn’t have that just 4h 4L and one or two lockers that’s it so choose your poison

Trd offroad and pro have multi terrain select now. In my opinion it replaces atrac.

Reminds me of a Y2K Tacoma. Simple, rugged and without any of the gimmicks commonly seen on today’s trucks.

@@tieoneon1614 my grandma got the truck stuck in the ditch, they pulled the truck out with a rope ties to that, idk if it matter but it was also on a steep upwards incline making even more weight on the point.. seems like a perfectly capable point to pull probably about 5000 lbs of force.. anything over that would probably be risky..

There are two holes in the back of the seat bottom where you can put the headrest into.
I have a '19 sr5, 2.5 in lift and 33s, does everything I need it to do. Love the truck, won't ever sell it.
Actually the TRD Off Road Premiums don't use the "vegan" leather the rest of Toyota's vehicle line-up uses, but rather real "cow leather". At least up to 2022. I doubt they changed that for 2023. It's VERY hard leather. It wears well, but encourages sweating when it's hot. Probably an option I'd skip were I to do it over again (recreational truck used almost exclusively for overlanding and astronomy camping). Cloth copes with heat and cold dissipation better than hard-faced leather. Thanks for the video review Ryan. Your great camera work sold me a set of OE 16" Trail Edition bronze tone wheels and the OE Trail Edition grille for my truck!
Oh, with respect to the seating position, yes it is quite odd. Much more like a 1980s sports car than a pickup truck or SUV. It fits me fine, but I'm NOT proportionate. I have very long legs and arms and a very short torso, proportionately. When friends of more normal proportions drive the truck, they have the same complaints as those you shared in the video. The next gen Tacoma will be built on the new Tundra platform so I would expect the seating position to be more in line with the present Tundra than this 3rd gen Tacoma.
On the off road niceties front, the vehicle has more than the rear locker if the comparison set includes crossover offroadified CUVs. It has a proper 2-speed transfer case, which is probably its greatest advantage over any AWD system, the rear locker, proper factory skid plates and big sidewalls with small diameter wheels rather than the too-common converse when cross-shopping toughened CUVs. It's a nice looking vehicle. It would have been great for them to skip the in-bed plastic storage boxes and lower the price to separate it from the TRD Off Road trim. You get a lot more (better shocks/suspension and additional off road nice-to-have driving aids for only a very little bit more money.
I did wish that it had at least Atracs. My 07 FJ cruiser has it and a rear locker and the Atracs is amazing and I use it more than the locker.
There are two holes in the fold up seat to slide the head rest in. They have to be removed to completely fold down the seats. I’m still trying to figure out how to pull the rear footstep out for climbing into the box, but I’m too lazy to read the manual. 😂
I just bought the 2022 Tacoma TDR off road, and there is no navigation system built in and I keep getting the runaround that there isn’t a factory navigation system that can be installed, and that I have to use CarPlay. Yet there is an entire section in the manual specifically targeted towards the onboard navigation system (which did not come pre-installed on my vehicle). Do you know anything about this or a possible glitch/fix so I can get a navigation system installed and not have to rely on apple carplay? I can’t seem to find an answer to this anywhere online, and the 10 customer service/dealers/service managers seem to be clueless as well 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ Thanks in advance, if you have any suggestions!
The rear headrest comes off and mounts to the back of the flipped up seat. It allows you to fold the seats flat.

It's funny how so many people talk shit about the Tacoma V6 being slow but damn give it a little credit it has over 💯 horsepower more than the 4-banger! I'm coming from an accord 2.0t touring that was tuned, I ran a 13.8@103mph this Tacoma does not feel fast but it's definitely quick and it pulls the truck respectable. It's definitely not geared to be an aggressive motor but she does run 💪 tho 👍👍💯

I have a Tacoma Sport 4x4 with no rear locker, no crawl control or any of that other stuff. I go off roading with it all the time in Arizona and that truck takes me everywhere I want to go. Through mud, water, steep hills, rocky roads, etc. I go into the most remote places with no problems. Don’t let them fool you that you need all that fancy stuff, it’s just not true
Yeah I just got a 21 with just 4x4 v6. I like the simplicity of it too and that less can go wrong with it.

Just a couple of quick things:
You can build a cheaper TRD Offroad on the Toyota site but good luck getting one. Tacoma's are allocation and the dealer's aren't ordering bare bones trucks.
In my area (southern NH) SR5 is 38.5K, TRD Offroad manual is $41K, Trail Edition is $43K, and TRD Off-road auto is $46K.
The Trail Edition is a great looking truck and IMHO better looking than the TRD Offroad. That's why I bought mine.

I find it interesting that some refer to the Tacoma has old. The Porsche 911 is an old classic that has been tweaked and improved over the decades....so why not Toyota. Sales numbers prove Toyota is doing it right. This 3.5 v6 may be not the most peppy engine BUT gas is now $2 03/L here in Ontario. The v6 is not bad on fuel.
The problem is Americans, they live in the meca of consumerism, they always want something "new" even if it's the same repacked 💩

An SR5 Trail Edition for MORE than a TRD Off-Road? Absolutely insane. Fewer features for more money, only in Toyotaland does that make any sense. Still has rear drum brakes, too.
It's not more than the TRD off road. If you added the equivalent add-ons the off-road would be around 4-6 thousand more. Depending on location.
Good luck finding an off road without all the manufacturer and dealer addons that make it less
FYI, as I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong), the locking rear diff works in 4lo only and less than 5 mph. Toyotas electronic traction control maybe brake actuated, but it's pretty damn good.

I agree. I just have the normal SR5, and I constantly screw with the Auto LSD. Im glad I didnt pay $ for a locker cuz this works fricking great. Just needs a little wheel spin to actuate.

Someone may have already mentioned but MTS could have technically helped the rear wheel spin yes but since you were locked if you would have just feathered the throttle you would have had the same effect, MTS doesn't give you more traction it utilizes the available traction, fully locked is going to "accept" all the traction/friction the wheel can create in any given condition.
Like the value proposition with locker and lift but can't stand the in-bed boxes. Why destroy the bed capability?

all anyone who buys a Tacoma needs, is the KDmax pro tune. It will fix the trans mission hunting, etc and will make it a much more enjoyable driving experience..
also on that log situation.... press traction control once, so that the ELSD is on see if it does better..
I used to have issues with the trans hunting, but I think it just had to figure out my driving style, I've been getting 24-26 mpg on highway and the short roads 24

A 2022 SR5 Trail Edition without any other options costs close to 41K. You'd be better off getting a TRD Off Road which gives you more standard features with some leftover money for options.
I find this model to be strange. In Nov. 2022, the TRD Off-road starts MSRP is $5000 less than the SR5 Trail. If you get the TRD Off-Road with the Double Cab, it's still $2000 less, and comes with more Off-road features including upgraded suspension. Apart from some cosmetic differences, I'm not sure why I would pick the Trail vs. the TRD Off-road. I liked the idea of a basic off-road truck until I saw the price. For my money, I'll take a TRD Off-road.
I would rather get a base trd off road package for 2 grand less and option for a trd exhaust, and the toyota roof rack for kayaks. Then buy the front spoiler for better mpg. Someday I would like to venture off road and do some light four wheeling in the woods nothing crazy. I had 1994 toyota dx 5 speed manual 22re 4 cylinder reg cab 4x4 years ago and put bfg tires on it and had a blast in the woods.

I got a '22 4x4 TRD off-road with 6-speed manual basic 📦 tho. 120k warranty 7 years $41,500 I think I'd rather have the off-road than the trail edition 🤷 I just feel like the off-road you get a little bit more + I prefer manual transmission (if good) & if you're going to save $3,000 why not
Honestly if you know what you’re doing you don’t need more than this all those features on the trd pro are awesome don’t get me wrong but think about it for many years we didn’t have that just 4h 4L and one or two lockers that’s it so choose your poison
I could be wrong, but I think traction control can only be completely disabled in 4LO.
