It’s simple for 556 I chose a MK18 but would take my Sig Rattler in 300blk all day for CQB, home defense and as a truck gun. It’s the deadliest SBR with the shortest package available and you can still engage targets out to 200 yards plus if necessary. It’s my favorite rifle I own right now. I also have an Omega 9K suppressor on it and it’s just ridiculous how effective, versatile and compact the weapon is. It’s shooting a 30 caliber round with your choice of supers or subs depending on the application. As far as a duty or SHTF rifle I would take a DD M4A1 suppressed.
Can't afford an AR or Glock, so for home defense I use my pump 12 and a Taurus 9mm. If it has to be two zip codes away I can use my 1948 Masin Nagant 7.62x54. All great and precise firearms at affordable (or used to be) prices. To me 300 yards is a felonious action in 99% of the cases. Just my thoughts. Great video though, I do enjoy AR's, even shot a couple, but have owned multiple SKS's and would probably go chrome barrel SKS.
Good demo, thanks for the video, my choice for only having one gun is a Rossi 92 tripple black, 38/357, 16" barrel ..... ....there are so many great choices......I live on a very small income. Canada.
I really can only justify 1 rifle. I originally had a 10.5 AR pistol. I sold the upper and was able to get a 16" aero precision 223 upper with the money.
Think what most people mean when they ask you what your favorite AR is, is brands of parts or brand of complete rifle, depending on which route you went for your favorite long gun. Yes, I understand that most respectable companies meet the "milspec" bar, and that, in general, receivers/buffer tubes etc are indistinguishable, but there are still leaders in the pack in fit and function. Got any favorite branded complete rifles or special parts you consider a must have in your favorite rifle? Ever shot an LWRC or POF Armory rifle? Does it really differ from, say a Daniel Defense, a Bravo Co.? IraqVeteran8888's torture videos clearly suggest there's a considerable difference between the top tier and lower end, especially when the mag dumps start. POF Armory was one of the most impressive I've seen. Incredible ability to keep firing after the barrel was so hot it was cherry red. Think that's what most people really want to know, is which AR is like the Toyota of AR's, just doesn't quit.
I have for realz cleared structures with a A4. And have poured out of Humvees with a A4. It can be done. A 16" is the happy medium. With M193 and M855 being the typical ammo people can stockpile. It works best with a 16" and above barrel. Not saying at house clearing distances it would matter. But all things being equal if I could only have one. It would be a 16". Especially if war fighting is a consideration.
My wife's 10.5 tight groups at 100 and a 300 hitter all day long. Folks need to remember the car-15 in Vietnam was very effective especially when most engagement where from 0-40 and 60 meters in heavy Bush. Lol. Just good for thought
I have a 16 inch and a 10'5 inch AR's, Thinking of an 12.5 upper to replace the 10.5. 12.5 seems to be the middle of the road for me. Just a thought. God Bless,
Yeah I've been toying with different barrel lengths for the past year or so. I love my 10.3 for home defense. I have an 11.5 and a 14.5. I've recently discovered the 13.7. If you get a 13.7 and the right muzzle device you can pin it to 16 and make it a rifle and not a SBR or pistol. Its lighter and more maneuverable than the 14.5 or 16 and you arent losing much velocity.
Most engagements, even in combat, are within 200 yards and most if those are within 100. In a civilian/militia defense scenario without support of snipers/spotters, anything past 100 yards is better left alone.
the 12.5 max length wise for cqb size and still have power down range even in ak platforms 12.5 is best all around if your going short and long range, now the 11.5 is just perfect but the 10.5 for most occasions 7.5s too even with the longest kak all can still hit 300and in from a vehicle
I'm in a massive geographical bowl. On three sides of me are hills of 60 to 100 feet high in the distance. The only area where I can't fire is a cow pasture off to one side. Even that has high hills but I don't even point my weapons in that direction for obvious reasons.
I would agree on the 11.5 (in pistol configuration) in my state it would fall under my CPL and carrying it loaded in a vehicle is legal....that aside, 13.7 to 14.5 would be a good do all length for a city dweller IMO
I like my 10.5 for pretty much everything, i can consistently hit out to 200 yards no problem and i can get in and out of the car easy enough. Also the 10.5 with carbine length gas system with h2 buffer cycles awesome
@@dukecleve4008 I’m working on a suppressor now that will have it right at 16” , that will help tame some on the noise and blast. Just incase i ever needed to worry about such things, but yeah it’s definitely my favorite barrel length so far.
I choose 300BLK but there are reasons. - Magazine issues, they say ya can use any 5.56 mag, it isn't really true. But there's plenty of good options. - Ammo prices, pre plandemic cheap 300BLK was getting close to 5.56 prices but hard to say if that will come back. And high end 300BLK will always be pricey. - Ammo availability, if concerned about long term supply 5.56 is a no brainer. - Risk of loading a 300BLK in a 5.56 if you have both around.
@@Tier1Citizen That aspect is certainly trending in the right direction though. It's easily the second most common AR15 cartridge and probably now I'd say maybe the 4th most common center fire rifle cartridge in the US. A lack of availability is mostly that sales out pace production, not that there's little production, and production is increasing.
@@Tier1Citizen Thanks for the reply. I reload 300blk so I'm fine on 308 projectiles. I don't even own a 556 upper so I was wondering if I should bother to get one.
Price, and availability of ammo and magazines. Better trajectory at a distance. When demand on most ammo goes up, 5.56 and 9mm is the most likely that is going to be produced because that's the larger market share. If you are happy with .300BLK, then stick with it. However, for most, 5.56 is good enough for the purpose; those with .300 BLK should consider something in 5.56 for those times when .300BLK may simply not be around. To me, 300 BLK is more of a boutique round than anything; the high velocity variant is more like a .30-30 or 7.62x39 than anything; the lower velocity variant suppresses nice, but gives the power of about a good pistol caliber carbine in the right caliber. Hunters may like the round simply because in some areas, .30 caliber ticks the checkbox allowing it to be used for hunting. Many tacti-cool guys thought that .300BLK was going to be the replacement for the 5.56; but never really thought it thru..
You can get down to a 14.5 maybe even a 13.7 if you're okay with permanently affixing a muzzle device. I don't have the experience to say that the 1.5 to 2.3 inch overall length savings will make any sort of meaningful difference but if you wanna get as short as possible w/o extra paperwork on a carbine then that's always something to try.
anyone using a weapon like this from their car, no matter how justified will be crucified by the authorities and used as an example by the anti-gunners
I want to disagree with you because I have common sense. If someone attacks you and starts shooting at you in your vehicle and you pull an AR and shoot back. As long as you didn't instigate it you should be fine legally, and I dont think the media likes to show instances in which a citizen legally protects themselves. Had the person shooting you used one and you didnt have one then it would be all over the news. That said, the media doesnt have common sense and would certainly try and portray you as a vigilante and question why you would have an AR in the car. So yeah its all backwards.
@@MSSynsyterGates I agree with your statement. sometimes I carry my suppressed MPX in the car, but know if I ever used it, I would probably still be alive, but my life would become extremely complicated. I've taken VCQC classes and have familiarity fighting around vehicles.

yeah. But I don't like taking the upper off once the build is complete.. Mostly because I paint them. But also maybe having multiple lowers is good for reliability - if one breaks you have more. PLUS if you have a short barrel ready to put onto a rifle lower they can imprison you for a long time if they dont like you.
@@kezdodik1 "if you have a short barrel ready to put onto a rifle lower" - That would be only if you have just a rifle lower and short upper. Say you had only a rifle lower and a short upper in the trunk of your car. But if in that same trunk you also had a pistol lower you'd be fine. It doesn't fit the OP, but it's my opinion that anyone seriously into ARs should have at least 3 lowers. 1 - Pistol, 1- Rifle, and 1 - registered/engraved SBR. Do that and you're legal/ready for any combination.
You really didn’t answer the question mission drives barrel length. Home defense and only home defense 10.3-12.5. 50-700m 12.5-16” (general purpose range, great at nothing good at everything. With a lot training can perform just as good as everything else) 18-20+ will be if you’re shooting 100-1000m. If you drop below 10.3 move to a 300 BLK and stay in the 5.5-10.3” realm. The saint has had spotty reviews. The AR market really has very few products where you aren't getting what you pay for. The expensive stuff is generally expensive for a reason and the cheap stuff is generally cheap for a reason. The only makes I think are overpriced are BCM and POF. IDK what the laws are where you are, nor what rules apply to whatever department you end up working for. But I'd say in general you want 4 things. No reason to consider anything but 5.56, people will disagree but IMO at least a 14.5" barrel. I'd buy it as a pistol as this creates more lawful options later. Outside of that I'd suggest you buy something decent that has the best lower you can afford. The lower is the part that you are most stuck with, everything else is easier change.
Jay, I would look at rifles from Ballistic Advantage and Aero Precision. Neither of those will cost you an arm and a leg. They are built well and have excellent warranties. When I say 10.3 and 11.3 I'm referring to the barrel lengths. Avoid the rifles from Springfield Armory they are way over gassed.

There's more than enough effective range for anything that might be needed for defense, "twice the recoil of 5.56" - False, to have twice the recoil it'd have to have twice the energy. "5.56 shoots flatter" - True but irrelevant at self defense distances. "5.56 is safer inside a home due to key-holing so less over penetration." - This depends entirely on bullet selection, some 300blk loads will do far better than 5.56. I'm with you on that one. My thing is putting holes in bad guys and making them stop their fighting. I would prefer not to have to kill anyone. All I'm after is an alteration of their behavior.

There is nothing wrong with an old shotgun. Get an 18 inch barrel and rock on. Just don't use bird shot for HD. Many reasons.
Thank you sir !! I thought i was alone .
KA
You're not alone. I love my 12 gauge. I have a few videos with it. You should search them out. It has a 12" barrel on it.
Good demo, thanks for the video, my choice for only having one gun is a Rossi 92 tripple black, 38/357, 16" barrel ..... ....there are so many great choices......I live on a very small income. Canada.
Wow, I bet that thing is a thumper!
Think that's what most people really want to know, is which AR is like the Toyota of AR's, just doesn't quit.
always thankful for your perspective and wisdom. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing that info.
If I can have 1 rifle it’d be an AR chambered in 5.56 AND .308 with a barrel length of 18 inches to 20 inches.

I have a 12.5 as my one and only but have definitely been reconsidering 14.5 or 16 as “one and only” just because that longer range and velocity
What makes you think that? Whats your data point?

the 12.5 max length wise for cqb size and still have power down range even in ak platforms 12.5 is best all around if your going short and long range, now the 11.5 is just perfect but the 10.5 for most occasions 7.5s too even with the longest kak all can still hit 300and in from a vehicle
Just curious, what's your backstop there, just woods?
I'm in a massive geographical bowl. On three sides of me are hills of 60 to 100 feet high in the distance. The only area where I can't fire is a cow pasture off to one side. Even that has high hills but I don't even point my weapons in that direction for obvious reasons.

My take is to leave the glock 22 alone and build a separate glock 17 if that's what you want.
I like my 10.5 for pretty much everything, i can consistently hit out to 200 yards no problem and i can get in and out of the car easy enough. Also the 10.5 with carbine length gas system with h2 buffer cycles awesome

Yes the world has changed dramatically in the last seven months.
@@Tier1Citizen it most definitely has, sadly.
Why should someone go for 556 over 300blk? Is there any other reason besides ammo transferability within a group?
I choose 300BLK but there are reasons.
- Magazine issues, they say ya can use any 5.56 mag, it isn't really true. But there's plenty of good options.
- Ammo prices, pre plandemic cheap 300BLK was getting close to 5.56 prices but hard to say if that will come back. And high end 300BLK will always be pricey.
- Ammo availability, if concerned about long term supply 5.56 is a no brainer.
- Risk of loading a 300BLK in a 5.56 if you have both around.
300BLK is an excellent round that works very well in shorter barrels. However, it has major availability issues.
The flamingos, ' I only have eyes for you'
16 inch because of all the red tape for anything shorter.
13.7/13.9 pinned and welded for me. But I am thinking like you.

If I could only have one rifle, it would be an ar-15........ with like five different uppers.
The lower receiver is technically the rifle......right?
yeah. But I don't like taking the upper off once the build is complete.. Mostly because I paint them. But also maybe having multiple lowers is good for reliability - if one breaks you have more. PLUS if you have a short barrel ready to put onto a rifle lower they can imprison you for a long time if they dont like you.
@@kezdodik1 "if you have a short barrel ready to put onto a rifle lower"
- That would be only if you have just a rifle lower and short upper.

And 5.56 is combat proven. I speak from experience as a retired 11B combat vet in Iraq and Afghanistan 5.56 is just fine. @@850spirates3 "300BLK is for reloaders or those that run suppressed"
- Or anyone that cares about terminal ballistics from short barrels. The simple fact is that 5.56 sucks from short barrels. It needs velocity and can't get it. But 300BLK shines in short barrels regardless of all other factors.
"Shorter effective range then 5.56"
- True, for long barrels, not for short, but also I'm saying home/vehicle defense. There's more than enough effective range for anything that might be needed for defense,
"twice the recoil of 5.56"
- False, to have twice the recoil it'd have to have twice the energy. It's better but it's not that much better.
"Twice the price, less common to find on the shelves"
- Can be and yes. Pre-plandemic cheap 300blk was getting close to 5.56 prices and most stores had some in stock. Now yes it's pricey, but it's coming back. And yes high end 300blk will always be pricey.
"Less variety of weights of projectiles"
- That couldn't be more false, there's 300BLK from 78gr to 240gr, from FMJ to fracturing and everything in between. 5.56 doesn't even touch that.
"5.56 shoots flatter"
- True but irrelevant at self defense distances.
"5.56 is safer inside a home due to key-holing so less over penetration."
- This depends entirely on bullet selection, some 300blk loads will do far better than 5.56.
"it is amazing in SBR form or suppressed"
- So then you agree, because a suppressed SBR is the ideal defense AR.
