- How to hard factory reset/restore in hboot fastboot/bootloader recovery mode Google HTC Nexus 9 android lollipop 5.0 tablet. Can't unlock Nexus 9? Wipe all your user data, wipe the cache partition, complete a factory reset. Perform a factory hard reset using the fastboot bootloader recovery mode option to enter the android system recovery, then select wipe data/factory reset and all data will be wiped from your android device SO BACK UP ALL DATA FIRST!. While any data stored in your Google Play Account will be restored after entering the welcome screen and signing back into your Google account, all apps and their associated data should be restored. This option may help you if your device is not responding, locked up, frozen, unresponsive, not working, screen is stuck, not booting or stuck on Google logo, forgot pattern, pin, or password. Performing a factory reset on your Nexus 9 may take up to an hour depending on your device model and memory. Make sure you plug in your tablet before starting the factory reset so it stays charged during the process and does not power off.
RESET INSTRUCTIONS:
Power you tablet off
Press and hold down the volume down button, then press and hold down the power button at the same time until the tablet boots to the recovery mode screen.
Next press the volume down button one time to highlight (Recovery mode)
Then press the power button to start recovery mode. You will then see an image of a little android robot with a red triangle and a black exclamation mark inside of the triangle.
Now press and hold down the power button then press and release the volume up button one time
Now in this screen use the volume button down to scroll down to (wipe data/factory reset) then press the power button to select it.
On the next screen scroll down to (Yes - erase all user data) then press the power button to select it. Now it will go through the process of formatting. It will tell you when it is complete at the bottom. When it completes just press the power button to restart your tablet to the welcome screen. If your tablet has issues or stops working or freezes up at any point during these steps, you can restart it by holding down the power button for several seconds or up to a minute or two.

Hi, I had an unsuccessful Update on my Nexus 9 and now the Wi-fi won't turn on. I did a factory reset from settings, a boot on the recovery mode and a wipe data/ factory reset from the recovery mode as well but is still has the same issue. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks
Does this also roll back the operating system? Like if I'm on 7.1 but the tablet originally had 5.0, will it have 5.0 or 7.1 after the reset?

Thanks for the video. Hope it works for my Nexus 9 (5.0.2 update is causing havoc for N9 users over the last 2 days). I'm curious as to what set up you use to make these videos with this viewpoint. I've been asked to make tutorials for some hand sewing projects that I do and really like how this turned out. I can see something in the reflection (like a stand with the camera/device on it). Anyway, thanks for the video, it's very clear, concise and to the point!
Mike Pearson For this video I only used my phone to record. I think I used the Nexus 6 phone. I also used a normal camera stand really nothing fancy just cheap stuff.

hey, I watched this video and went through the hard factory reset. After going through the steps, and trying to log in, it gives me an "Unable to sign into device due to recent password change. Please try to sign in after 24 hours".
Background: I'm using a a roommate's tablet, and will be using my gmail credentials. Rumors for this device is that there is a 24 hour (For some devices, 72 hours) time window that we have to wait out. Do I just need to wait the 24/72 hours?
you need to have the exact password and login credentials or it's gonna keep making the time longer everytime you put in the wrong password and you don't want that to happen,

just watched your video and I have one question..
I updated my nexus 9, waited for it to install and restart, but it didn't restart.
Every time I try to turn it on it just brings up the 4 coloured dots and goes no further..
Would a factory reset work ?

I've done all this a few times and my HTC nexus 9 keeps freezing and doesn't really start... Is there an easy way to reinstall the sw on it... I can do it on a mac or windows. Please let me know what I can do to fix this problem of freezing and sw issues
You have to go through a process to reinstall and you need a computer to do it

Jamie, there was a firmware update that killed my tablet. After I selected to update, it was stuck in a bootloop. I called Google, they had me Clear Cache Partition. Bootloop continued. I asked if she thought Factory Resetting would what would need to happen next. She said she thinks so, but to call HTC first. I tried to Factory Reset. Still didnt worked. And Im still waiting on HTC to call. Pretty sure I'll have to send it in, but do you have any possible idea what I could do next?
Vexdin You would probably have to flash the stock image. That involves several steps. Or just to be safe send the tablet in and let the warranty center take care of it.

Apparently there was a security patch that the Nexus 9 downloaded that completely locked the machine, back in early 2017. I still have the N9 but it wont boot regardless of what I try (including everything in this video). Any thoughts on how to get it to boot up again? Thanks advance.
Yes this is just a reset video. What you need to do is force flash the firmware. That's done differently and will work. I have videos on my channel showing how to do the process with other android phones and using android studio tools and a command line. Yes it can be done and it would work. I wish I still had mine and I could make a video for you showing how to do it.
Hey man, I'm a fellow android geek and I'm not a noob with this stuff, but I'm kind of new to Nexus as I'm used to Samsung and OnePlus devices. I wanted to return the nexus 9 back to stock firmware using the new 6.0.0 official stock firmware which I flashed using fastboot commands. Everything was successful, but the device is just stuck on Google Screen when booting. I can access bootloader mode but even reset/recovery gets me stuck on it. I'm going to try reflashing twrp using fastboot and try it again and tell you what happens.

The tl;dr is: Power off entirely, hold down and press power til logo shows, let go of power. At menu, select recovery, hit power. When "command not found" comes up, hold power and up briefly, select factory reset, confirm and done.
On a presentation point. Please split this kinda video into two parts. A quick version, with a longer version behind if you want to discuss this further. Or provide links. Reason being is that as it stands, it could have been condensed into less than a minute. Fully describing the logo, with it being shown on screen, is entirely unnecessary. We can see what's done already, describing the logos and all in great detail doesn't help. Either way, this video did solve the issue I had, so I'm glad it exists nonetheless.

But the problem is with me it doesn't restart easily .. but when press turn off button while pressing both the volume keys it turns on .. basically it isn't restarting itself automatically .. it just got never gets turn on.. Any help now ?

Why should I use this over the "factory reset" at the HBOOT screen?

You started with a working screen. But the most often case- the screen stuck on Google.
Following your steps one can reach the screen after "robot". Why should one delete factory data? There is "recovery" line here. Maybe this line should be reached by Volume buttons and then Power pressed?!

Hi Jamie, tried your instructions and it went through everything okay- but didn't work. I don't know what Android version I have on the Nexus 9 I just bought off Ebay (used) but the logo on the start up screen is different, the dots are not jumbling around but are in a straight line. Do you have any other suggestions for my tablet?
It's probably running a different version of android then. Try to contact the ebay seller and see if they had any issues with it
I've now found out it's Android 7.1.1 with a last update May 2017. The seller said to send it back and he will sort it out and send back to me again. Just wish I could bypass the FRP.

I've sent the tablet back to the seller and hopefully he can disable the FRP or remove his accounts or something. I also thought of setting up a new Gmail account so he can log in with his details and set it up with the new Gmail account and then it should work and when I get it back I can add my proper account.

+Jesse Lerud yeah I would try the process from the beginning one more time and see if it fixes it if it does the same thing again and goes into an endless boot then you may have a corrupt recovery partition or it could be something further Hardware was what I recommend you do is research how to factory Flash the firmware on this device if this reset doesn't help you that's what I would recommend doing flush the actual firmware and that will fix it for sure as long as there's no hardware issues
Thanks for this video, but I'm using a different model of a tablet called "MilkBox7", or BR77. It's a small 7-inch tablet, and this trick didn't work for me. So PLEASE help me. I got locked out of the tablet because my older sister changed the password and I googled through everything and it didn't work. Basically, I was able to get into Recovery Mode and I could move the highlight with Volume Buttons, but pressing the power button for any amount of time didn't do anything. (Unless you press it for like 5-10 seconds, it just shuts down the tablet.) I experimented with other combinations of buttons already and it's not working at all. I made sure the power button is NOT broken. It was responsive when not in recovery mode. So you have a solution for this? THANK YOU!!! I will yell at my sister for hours and turn on WiFi all the time for Google Find My Device to work, even if it costs my battery life.

I got used one and when I do factory reset and recovery I have a message saying This device was reset. To continue sign in with a google account that was previously synced on this device Which l don't know

If I tried to choose "wipe cache partition," and not sure if it was completely done.
and reboost the syteem...but it seemed stuck...keep running the "android" animation for a long time.. even though trying to turning off the device.

It's basically not going into recovery mode .. when I press on recovery the Google logo shows up and after it just show blank screen.. ( means turned off screen ) 🙁

What if your tablet is locked, it wiped off as you instructed but it asks me for the prior Gmail on it
I think it sounds like it want the old user info. If you don’t have that you will need to do a more advanced method. I have videos about the more advanced method but I don’t think I did one on this tablet

+Nicole Scott You might have to flash back to stock and start over. You might have just run into an issue. I would try it again. But flash back to stock. Then start a fresh root again.
Haven't used my Nexus 9 in a while and decide to turn it on, so I check for updates and install but error appears your device is corrupted, so I'm hoping this factory rest does the job.

+Vrinda Datt it can take up to an hour to complete or even longer I think with the Nexus 9. As long as you follow the steps I would just wait for it to finish.

not sure, hopefully it was set to back all the data up before you did the reset. Then everything should restore. Try signing in to your google account then open all the apps and tabs in the browser. Maybe that will work.

Hey Jamie, I did as you asked. It perfectly went through till 7:55 (Where I have to press the power button),but as soon as the Google logo show's up, it goes back to the same error; which is Your Device is corrupt and it gives me a link to go which is g.co/ABH. Please could you help me out here.

not sure. double check that you are doing the buttons the correct way. Sometimes it's tricky to do it if you don't press the buttons right.
Please try to make sure you are pushing the buttons just like I do in the video.
Hey Jamie,I did exactly like what you have instructed. Everything gets done,but after the "Reboot System now",it goes back to the same No command android(Red triangle and with a blak exclamation mark) and then after a while it say, "It cannot be trusted and may not work properly" with the same g.co/ABH. Please help me out here,since I'm not sure what to do now.
I don't know if this is helpful but after the Power and volume up, when I need to head down to "Yes - delete all user data" , Instead of that, I just have a No and a Yes. So I just go down to the "Yes". Not really sure if this is helpful.

I did these steps and I still get " Your tablet is corrupt, it may not work properly "

I prefer to everyone not that you shouldn't but I really don't like my Nexus 9 it's very slow laggy I get ad pop up every time I open a new app and it gets me mad
I got rid of it to for the same reason it seemed slow
