Good job on doing it yourself. Heres couple thing to make this job easier for you. Set the pressure a little higher on the nail gun and the heads will indent. No need for so many nails either their just to tack the panels. Last dont use wood putty on this stuff use painters caulking on all your joints and gaps and it hides them great also can use on nail holes just wipe off excess with damp sponge. No need to sand.
Brian, you made me spit beer on my keyboard, .... when you said that your house is a little older,... early 2000's...... try 1885 and it started off as a miners cabin, lol, rotf. I threw away all of my levels and squares along time ago.. When it comes to nailing of the panel, just locate the studs at 16'oc. Keep up the good work. I love working on my old house..... it gives my an excuse to drink...
This looks gorgeous! I just did shiplap in our bathroom, I'm thinking beadboard for the nursery is next, it looks elegant and polished... I'm 6 months pregnant so I will force my husband to help with this one though! I appreciate how honest & relatable you are about your work, and your 'poor man saw' trick!
+Con Artist lol yeah I really put my foot in my mouth on that one. What I meant is that it was built when those cat 5 cables were needed for internet now with everything being wifi they aren't needed.
Older..the one I just bought was built in 1955 and I'm doing that in my kitchen, just finished one wall..not bad for never having done it and I'm a GIRL!
One more tip..paint the wall with the color of the panel so the color of the wall doesn't show through in case the panel doesn't fit perfect at the joints. Nice vid tho. and great job.
1:01 Hilarious. This is the face of a man who knows he is in the dog-house. I was just thinking; uhhh...maybe all those breakables should go into a bin. Kudos for giving your daughter such a pretty, girlie room.
Enjoying your videos. When marking and cutting, try doing it from the back side to avoid any tool marks getting onto your finished side and fraying as you mentioned with the skill saw.. I know it's a mute point now, but if you do chair railing in the future, they make it to where it actually hangs on the cut edge of your wainscoting, there by covering the cut edge completely for a more finished look and no caulking. Looks really nice though! How about some crown molding next? I think that would tie everything in really nice in your daughters room.
i KNEW you were going to step on that nail board. I have the same luck ;-) Looks good. I'm about to do the same thing to my soon to be be here baby boy's room with the help of my 3 other kids.
Good work... instead of using so much glue, try the scissor nailing method.(cross your nails to lock the trim and boards to the wall) quicker than having to glue constantly. Enjoyed watching as I do the same in my house...
Hello sir! Can you please advise me? Im not sure what can be done about the beadboard MDF that i added along the long wall facing the outside in my basement. It seems to have expanded and is wavy now. Apparently there are supposed to be joints in between the boards but I didn't know of this issue previously. And I watched few videos and no one left any gaps between the boards. Thanks!
Nice to see how you did the project. Next time, set your nailer to a slightly deeper depth so you won't have to punch 100+ nails. To simplify things, I'd also suggest using the same trim color throughout your house. Oh, on this type of project it's also really important to use a level especially on "older" homes! Looks great, I'm about to do our half-bath and will video it as well.
Rod Swartz Thanks for the tips Rod, let me know how your half-bath goes. My next big project is to do the bathroom, we have a new vanity and plan on putting in tile flooring and a backslash.
+L Lund The baseboard was already installed when we bought the house I simply placed the wainscoting on the top of the baseboard. Sorry that I couldn't help more. Cheers!
Do you 100% have to hit the studs when using the nail gun? I'm not going to use glue at all like some do. But I have issue with studs on my walls at times. So wondering if possibly shooting nails at angle to hold better is option if stud is playing hard to get.
Funny thing is the point if the brad nails are to hold the board against the wall while the glue dries. The glue is what keeps the board attached to the wall.
When you put the bead board up did you put it on top of the lower trim? You went a little fast. Please let me know because bead board is my next project for my dinning room. Thank you
Yes, I put it right on top of the original base board. Even though I did I wouldn't recommend doing it. At HD and lowes and you get pre-cut grooved modeling which the bead-board will rest into.
Thanks for this. I am also painting a nursery purple. The shade always ends up darker than it looks on the sample. Do you have the specs of what shade purple you used? Yours looks good!
You're correct. I choose to leave the baseboard on and have the wainscoting material just go on top of the baseboard. If I could do it again I would install a new baseboard over the top of the wainscoting. Thanks for stopping by!
The idea that you can join two pieces of beadboard that way assumes that your baseboard (or floor) is straight and level. That has not been my experience in any homes I have had or worked on. I notice that your skillsaw cutting guide lifts one side of the base which keeps the saw base at a slight angle, so the cut is not square to the face of the work. Not an issue with very thin beadboard, but not good for something like 3/4" material.
I didn't for this project but I would recommend that you replace them with pre cut Grove baseboards which will hold the wainscoting in place and give a cleaner surface.

Joe Bucci Sorry for the split beer ;) that must be some experience owning a house that old with so much history to it.
I am the 4th generation in it and sorry to say none of the 3 prior generations were much good at electrical or plumbing.
It keeps me busy.

Very nice job. Im trying to do the same thing inour laundry room but of course there isnt asquare corner or straight wall in the place:)
That's gonna be a tough job, good luck.
looks great! what was the small tool you used to fit her hammer in the nails before filling them in?
It is called a nail set. Thanks so much for stopping by!

It may have expanded because of the moisture. I would do everything you can do to reduce the beadboard from getting wet.
Good job man! I did this to my rr last weekend waiting for this weekend to finish.
Good luck!

My question is why not use the chair rail to cover the holes on the top of the beadboard? I thought it should overlap.
It certainly can be used to cover the holes. It depends on the and size of the chair rail.
Great video, about to do this for my bathroom. Question: how were the corners done? What did you use to paint the panels?
They came painted white, but after we put wood filler in all of the holes we have some white paint that we used to make it look uniform.
Good job...I got the exact same boards
+Ready Temp thank you very much. Good luck on yours!
More detail needed. i.e. what size brads are you using?
Standard 18 gauge Brad nailer. Thanks so much for stopping by!!
Using a 15 degree angle to splice chair rail works a lot smoother than using 45
Thanks for the tip!

buy the next lightest shade color.
Sorry, I do not have the details about the paint color anymore.
I always thought the trim or the baseboard goes on last?
You're correct. I choose to leave the baseboard on and have the wainscoting material just go on top of the baseboard. If I could do it again I would install a new baseboard over the top of the wainscoting. Thanks for stopping by!
Great work! We are doing our nursery for baby girl too. How was the gap between beadboard and baseboard ? We are worried there will be a gap showing
Thanks so much! If your worried about the gap there are baseboards which are cut to hide the gap.
You had 666 likes when I saw this video so I hit the button 👍
Had to change that for ya 😂
Thanks so much!!
What chair rail is that? We are doing this in our dining room and I'm looking for a charirail to use
I'm quite sure it was a standard rail that home depot carries.

Good job on the project and thanks for your video...
Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.
Nice job
Thanks!
Does the chair rail just sit right on top of the paneling ?
yes it does, if I could do it over again I would probably have bought a different chair rail to go on top and in front of the wainscotting.
How did you do the corners?
I butted the wainscoting up against the edge of the wall and trimmed the chair rail at 45 degrees.
Nice job!!!
Thank you very much!
great work, this is my next project...in the bathroom
+percy thrillington I'm hoping to do a bathroom make over too, good luck!
Finishing nail size for wainscoting and chair rail?
18 gauge. Cheers!
Great video!
Thanks!!
What kind of glue ? Liquid nail ????
It was some general adhesive.
over yonder.....where you from dude
Lol, I am not sure where I picked that up.
And by all means, don’t help out the guy fixing up your room by cleaning off some of your crap so he can get the work done without damage.
Lol, my daughter was way to young to understand that principle. Thanks for stopping by!
Don't you have to remove the baseboards first?7
I didn't for this project but I would recommend that you replace them with pre cut Grove baseboards which will hold the wainscoting in place and give a cleaner surface.

and thanks!

He used a tool called a Nail Set. You can get them at home supply stores and hardware stores.
What he said.
