One of the undervalued aspects of this lesson is the fact that (AFAICT) it was done in a single take. If a person is going to create an instructional video like this, it takes some skill to be prepared for a 30 minute routine like this. Yeah, there could be editing I haven't noticed, but I think what shines through is Heather's comfort with the material. No, there isn't a ton of stuff to remember and learn for the clip, but it's still something the average drummer isn't going to be able to mimic without prep. That's inspirational here in a subtle way. Kudos to her for pulling this off. ps. props to Drumeo's Jared and Dave for doing similar things in the past.
Thanks for noticing! I'm not perfect with the material but I certainly have spent some time with it and I know that it's helped me a lot. I noticed that it's really pretty hard to get through the whole thing on your own, and that because I've put the time in I hoped I could help others get started with more encouragement than you'd normally get if you were just practicing alone with a book.
The professionalism in this video show by Heather is incredible. So talented and committed to her craft. I've been using this video for the last few weeks. CURIOUS do you only use these rudiments? Or do you practice other ones? Wish we had all of them on the screen notated. makes it so easy to stand in front of my TV with the pad and follow along.
That's right, and she DOES NOT miss a beat! Imagine if you had to be the one doing this tutorial, if halfway through the session you played something a little bit off, It'd have to be redone! This is hardcore stuff!
Just finished doing this exercise everyday for 30 days (give or take a few) and feel a huge improvement in my weaker hand. The exercise is tough to get through some days, but it almost becomes like a meditation after a while. Loved the video, thank you Heather!
I haven't done these exercises in many many years because I switched my focus to guitar and singing, but I'm trying to help a friend learn rudiments. I remembered probably 10% of the sticking patterns, and my left hand is dragging bad. I brought a pair of sticks home so that I can get my chops up
Watching Drumeo for quite a while now I couldn't help but buying my first ever drum-pad and a pair of sticks - being 62 years of age - DANG! I need to...have to...must learn this!! Purchased the book. With this video I've got an idea what it should look and sound like. Thanks so much for the 30 min in one piece - flawless demonstration ! I think I'm going to begin with 60 bpm or so...
Heather: if you haven't practiced this before then practice at a slower tempo first My egoistic self: let's start playing along even though I've never even seen the book before
I found a few rudiments where I found myself deficient starting on my weak hand. If you go to setting and playback speed, you can adjust the speed to .5x or .75x. Slow is steady, steady is smooth, smooth is fast
lolll saaame. i ended up easing in to some of the ones i found difficult by playing them at .75x speed so that i didn't get super aggravated w/ myself lol
I loved this. I just received my new drum practice pad. If anyone has trouble following along (as I did) just slow the speed of the video down until you get the pattern and then speed it back up.
This, by chance, has become my corona-virus warm up; four days straight now, and what once seemed impossible is getting to be routine. I'm still a little sore, and my weak hand flops around a bit, but it is getting better!
I started using this as a beginner and could barely do any of them. 2 months later of doing it 2-5 times a week and now I can do them all no problem and 152 actually feels slow!
@@Gaizure try going to settings and playback speed and you can increase video speed. I do exercise at 1.25 speed now. Just a little faster but it makes a difference, or if its to fast for you, slow it down.. Enjoy.
Wow is that hard at 125% speed. I am now comfortable at normal playback speed, but it was getting a little sloppy st 125%. One addition I have made playing at normal playback is to add a foot pattern, a "samba" pattern. The &2 3, &4 1 pattern. My foot isn't the best, some patterns throw me off a bit more than others, but it is getting better. (And, if I stop the foot, the hands can sleepwalk through the thing.)
Heather, it is beyond inspiring to see you play this in it's entirety with such relaxed posture, encouraging advice, and precision. I have never seen anyone else share this lesson. Many times, we imagine the difficulty of committing to such a daily task and immediately conjure up rationales for avoiding it. Thank you, Heather, for choosing to set a clear example by filming this lesson.
This is sooo incredibly useful. I’ve been a drummer ever since I could walk, but after I graduated i foolishly decided not to pursue music and basically quit drumming all together. After 3 years of being depressed and borderline suicidal I realized that no matter how much money I make, nothing can fill the gap that was left behind when I quit music, so I’ve decided to toss caution to the wind and follow my dreams. Naturally when I came back to the drums i had lost a lot of my speed agility and control, and this was a perfect place to start 3 days later and i was flying through these a 200bpm without effort. You guys are amazing, thank you.
This is great to practice along with. Thank you Heather and Drumeo! Another way one could practice with this video is to modify the playback speed. This would, of course, change the tempo. The following playback speeds effect the tempo accordingly: 0.25 = 38 BPM 0.50 = 76 BPM 0.75 = 114 BPM 1.00 = 152 BPM 1.25 = 190 BPM 1.50 = 228 BPM 1.75 = 266 BPM
This is literally the best mental lesson I've seen come out of Drumeo.... I can't believe how many holes this poked in my internal time (and I play for a living). This will be my quarantine co-video everyday.
I’ve practiced with this video 5 days per week since it was published and my drumming has tightened up significantly. Best tutorial on UA-cam for drums I’ve ever done.
Wendy Williams Well, I think you are amazing getting back to drums after 26 years and I know exactly what you mean about neighbors 😬. You are doing it the right way starting at level one and getting down all of your basics which I’m sure will all come back to you. All the best wishes and luck in the world my friend in your renewed drum journey! Rock on! 🤘🙂🤘
This exercise has been transformative!! Has been a dramatic help, I took an almost 8 year hiatus unintentionally. I finally was able to get me a new set, I thought I could pick up where I left off, my muscles said otherwise. Thank you for this!!
Bought the book and I’ve been doing this exercise along with you several times a week and it’s helped me so much! I didn’t know where to start to help my rudiments and this got me on the right path. Thank you!
this is ASMR for drummers: something to practice to (and get centered with) by day, something to relax and fall asleep to by night. awesome stuff, heather!
Wow! Well, this is definitely something to work towards! Think I'll start with slower tempo and fewer reps, and work my way up!! Just starting out at 62.
I like the old-school approach of basic repetition, which I haven't utilized much in recent years. I think it's true that there are some things that one doesn't encounter until hanging with a process for a while - mentally and physically
43, new to drumming, normally practice my left hand on everyday life.... taking the challenge once a day made a huge difference with my left hand control after only one week!! keep on smiling.....
Congratulations on taking up drums my friend and taking this difficult challenge on weekly! I started drums 26 months ago and one of the first things I did was work extensively on my weak hand (left). I am so happy I suffered through several months getting my weak hand much better bc now I alternate seamlessly on my hi hat between my right or left hand which allows greater freedom at the kit. Keep up your great work and I’m so happy for you being a new drummer, KEEP ROCKING my friend!!
Heather, I have two young girl students and I used your video as an encouragement that “girls can play too.” Wish you did the whole book as you presented this…perfect!
Nope, I could not keep up, nor did I fully recognize what was going on, but this was PRICELESS to see how Stick Control was supposed to be used. I am walking away with a better understanding and the onowledge of what I need to practice. Thank you! -Marvin
Universal advice you probably already know -> just slow down :) 152 BPM will be challenging for many, so start at 100, 80 or even 65 first and then step up once you comfortable with these.
Wow! That was humbling. I actually made it through. My hands were so sweaty that I was tightening and loosening my grip. By the last # 24 I was saying under my breath. "Mama Dada paradiddle" What a brilliant lesson this truly is.
Just did this on a kit w a Samba foot pattern. Dare ya to go for it! I had to go back 10 secs a few times to get a couple shakey ones down. Thanks for the video! 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Just found this video and practised along with it. Been playing for 27 years, but finally just upgraded my practice pad and have been working hard on it. Already noticed a huge difference in my hand speed. All you drummers watching, buy yourself a copy of Stick Control and the best practice pad you can find and play along. I’m amazed that she did this in one take, with no mistakes. Especially switching between exercises seamlessly. Playing along with her is a great way of making sure my strokes sound as even as possible between both hands.
Heather, I've been using this video for the past two months and it has made a HUGE difference in strengthening my weak hand and overall stick control ... I used it every other day now ... thank you!
It doesn't seem difficult on the surface, but like you say playing cleanly, and evenly is the key. Also the memory exercise is another challenge. Trying to remember the next pattern as to make a clean transition. Not easy
I’ve followed along to you and this video like Jane Fonda for 10 days now and it’s making such a difference. I really appreciate this, more than you guys know. Thank you Drumeo and Heather.
decided to single L for 10 minutes with my weak hand before I was missing notes, this was a good exercise for me! I think I could go a little faster, too. I recommend it for anyone trying to do the same, especially traditional grip! I’ll definitely do this again with both hands soon!
Update: Tried it again and nailed most sections! Had a little trouble with the transitions, and a few took me a couple of measures to make sense of on the fly - so I need to slow down a couple. But this is a great way to measure progress, practicing has definitely been working!
Wonderful. Drumming has always been meditation for me. When I play live I connect with the band, then when I feel completely relaxed, I notice I use proper grip, don't move my arms too much, and my mind and body are so in sync. At this point I observe, things come, then they go. Drummers who figure this out (I know quite a few) have such a wonderful way of training the mind to let go of negative energy and breathe correctly and while I'm meditating, my cardiovascular system is getting a wonderful workout. Thank you for this video. It's the first book my first teacher ever gave me, learned how to read from book too. I love how they never change the cover. Great video, cheers
I started in November last year (2023) and now it’s the end of June (2024) and I just played through the entire video without a mistake for the first time 💪 I’m going to continue to keep it as part of my routine and use this video (because I have been) to play through the next two pages because I just like the format! Heather is awesome! Drumeo is awesome! The drumming world is freaking awesome! 30 years into a self-taught experience, and I’m still humbled every day I sit behind a kit. If it wasn’t for videos like this, or communities like Drumeo, I would still be having the same struggles, and really only playing mimicry at best without knowing proper hand, technique or playing with the Metronome. Thank you a million times over, for helping me reach the next level. I will express my gratitude by continuing to learn and never stop being humbled by it. Maybe someday I’ll be like Jim Chapin in my 80s dreaming about marching across the country with Moeller himself popping out chops from dusk til dawn 🫡 🎧🥁
I'm on my third day doing this now. I did when it came out, last night and now I did it in the morning. This will be my routine until I properly master this at 200 BPM. Thanks so much for this video!
Heather, Thank you so much for this. Its the first time after being away for many many years. On a journey to get back into drumming. Planning on using this every day for 30 days straight to see if I really improve. I can feel it already. Thank you!!!
Wow! Was this fun! I just started playing drums (electronic) 5 weeks ago. I completed Domino's 30-Day Drummer course and will complete her 10-Day Fills course tomorrow. The lack of experience forced me to remain hyper-focused, however, I also tried to stay as relaxed as possible. I improvised my way through the paradiddles since I only recently learned the word "paradiddle," and haven't practiced them yet. Following Heather's lead, I did pretty well overall. I kept up with the 156 BPM and made it to the end. Awesome workout! I'll be back!
I just want to say thank you. I feel it's so important to recognize the mindful work that goes into progress. This is a video I can just play to. I feel you've made the goal of progress much more obtainable. Please keep doing what you're doing.
Thank you Heather for this extremely inspiring video. 1. Stand , don't sit on my throne for the work. Who knew?! 2. I can see your left hand and how you hold the stick. I have been choking up ands the results are poor3. You actually keep at it even when you get a little off time, where I would have stopped. 4. Your focus and calm Bering a ne dimension to where I am practicing in Bozzio speed rolls with my ego, vs my practicing of what you exemplify here. Blessings . I will porceeed to attempt this and also review your other videos. I just met you. Appreciate this gift.
Had toe surgery yesterday, so no double pedal practice for me for a while 😣. So today just lying in bed trying to get the motivation to do some pad work and here comes drumeo and Heather to the rescue, THANKS 🥁👍 Just finished and I must say it is a great warm up before hitting the stage as well
This book has been in my possession, and an essential part of my drumming repertoire since I began playing! If you’re serious about being a drummer, this book is a must have in your collection!
Yes, Stick Control is definitely one the All-Time classics in drum education. I'm playing drums for nearly 50 years and all this years this book was a loyal companion on my way to become a better drummer. I agree, working on the given material is kind of meditation. Well, to be honest, it was pretty challenging to watch your hands only, because of the beauty of the tutor. I hope you don't mind two small things where I disagree with your routine: a) why should I STAND while I'm practicing - I am a drumset player and I have to sit to do my job. b) Mr Stone wrote his book in 'cut-time' so the metronome also should "click" in cut-time. Please let me add some further suggestions: Practice all routines first with wrist-motion only, then again with finger-control only, using the push-pull technique. Thank you for your clear and understandable presentation - I am sure it will open many new doors for beginning drummers. Please stay healthy and continue your great work. Thank you!!!
And, the part you ignored for the sake of attempted comedy: Relax. With regard to her earlier statement about any stress you've been holding will likely present itself during this exercise, that's often when people realize they ARE holding stress somewhere in their body. I, for example, tend to carry it in my shoulders and/or lower back. But I don't always realize it. However, once those areas start to ache and hurt, not only am I then aware of the issue, but I can work to consciously relax those specific muscle groups to release the stress/stop the pain.
@@schaddalton well, yeah, you're right, but, my point is not that what she teaches is bad but rather that it's not good didactics and shows some lack of competence on the teacher's side. A teacher can't know how to fix all problems but should at least know how to fix the problems you actively point out. If one of my teachers ever told me about a problem and would just tell me to basically get over it I'd be looking for a new competent teacher. I don't want to hate at all, please, I don't want to be misunderstood. But much of the information that is on the internet can be quite harmful and stand in the way between aspiring musicians and a long lasting and sustainable career.
Patrick Buzo Read my comments! I can tell you’re an experienced player!!! This young woman knows nothing about teaching!!! she goes against every aspect of practicing when pain or stress is involved while playing the instrument!!! A novice trying to get her 5 minutes of fame!!! This fucking clown’s video should be taken down!!!!!!!
@@sticktrik yeah, definitely not a great teacher. I do agree with you that she's sharing some potentially harmful information. but she's not the only one to blame, afterall Drumeo probably approached her to make a lesson and maybe even told her on what subject. I can imagine that declining an invitation from drumeo must be really hard and no drummer hoping to grow fame would ever do decline the invitation, even if they thought they weren't qualified to do a lesson themselves.
Almost thru my first year of "banging" the drums in 50 yrs. Having so much fun and the Stick Control Challenge is great, everyday for the past 2 weeks. Thank you / Joey
I did this exersice before 3 - 4 mounths and this is beast. And now i did this with you again. I love this alot! spacali for warming up before plaing. thank you alot for tis lesson Drumeo. all of your lesoons are amaing. keep halp the The drumming community!
I clicked the video (let's all be honest) because you are so pretty. Then I saw you hold up the Stick Control book and knew this was going to be a serious lesson. You a very, very consistent on both hands. The paradiddle, single stroke and double stroke all sound identical if I'm not looking. Great demo. Thank you!
THANK YOU EXTREMELY for THIS OUTSTANDING drumming exercise!!! It WILL be VERY challenging for me, more endurance wise, being I am a one arm drummer like Rick Allen. Only I use ALL acoustic drums. No electronic or triggers. So this exercise will consist of me using my right hand on an upright snare, and my right foot on a floor snare, mounted on a SIDEKICK DRUMS snare mount. Then also doing it going back and forth from right foot to left. 💪🏻👣🥁🥁👣❤😊
Lol, whyyyy thank you Marty. Not sure about the embarrassing part, but hopefully my playing can inspire those the same way I am inspired by other drummer's around me. 🤘🏼🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁😊
@@heatherondrums Will do Heather. It may not be of this exercise, being the length of it. But I would be happy to post a video of my all acoustic kit, and how I play with one arm. Using my SIDEKICK DRUMS floor snare mounts. "Drum until your body goes numb." 🤘🏼🥁
My teacher Wilfredo Reyes, introduced me to this book ages ago in Puerto Rico. I used it religiously, and it gave me tremendous speed and control in both hands.
It's amazing how most of us find ourselves coming back to the Stick Control book time and time again. Thanks for the reminder, Heather. Wonderfully executed, too. Glad I found this during these quarantined times. Be well.
Will have to buy the book as I didnt know which rudiment came next and my eye isnt fast enough to work it out. But thanks for the guide along, great effort.
I'm new to drumming an this is the best thing out there for Georges stick control. I hope you continue with the book and do more pages. I feel the way you put the notes on paper for L an R makes it easier to play. THANK YOU HEATHER T.
I keep coming back to this exercise, no matter your skill level. This is just priceless and I find it extremely useful and also kind of meditative. You can always spice it up with some accents, different dynamics levels etc. Every time I sit behind my drum kit I can feel an improvement. Thanks Drumeo and Heather, you are awesome!
A month and a half I finally made it through the whole routine been working on it 2-4 times a week. So pretty excited. Strange after 40 yrs playing reteaching myself is just as much fun as the yrs I missed out doing these routines. Thanks a bunch!!
Great exercise this way. I'm a 71 year young Rock/Blues/Jazz drummer and own this book for years but your approach ( as it should(!) ) is great and the past months I play this approx. 4 times a week. ( your almost there, haha not really! ). Your doing Great!! Thanks, stay safe and enjoy yourself! From The Netherlands, Alkmaar ♪♫ ♥
This has become my daily routine, i try my best to stay consistent and so far it has really even out the strength of my hits between my left and right hand, so thank you very much drumeo crew for always being there for me!
I never realized how weak my left was from my right until I started practicing with college and DCI. Our warm-up piece was about 30 mins long 152 bpm alternating 4/4 and 7/8 8th notes alternating accents followed by diddles then flams and 16th notes then combination of all four. Really helpful with sticking and keeping both left and right volume identical. I like this warm-up though, will be alot easier to teach those just starting out.
Started playing drums about a month ago, started doing this lesson every day before anything else 3 weeks ago. At firs could only play along at 75% speed. Got up to full speed a week ago and nearly have it perfect. Thanks so much for the video, no way would i have found the motivation to do this myself!! My left hand is getting better in leaps and bounds!! Thankyou =)
Great poise, technique, style, stamina and dedication to the craft-the whole package! This young lady clearly shows what it takes to be skilled on the drums-or ANY instrument for that matter! 👌
"Stick Control" is a bible. And will always be. Period. I love how perfectly consistent she is and that you can only know the pattern changed by looking not by hearing. Watching this is really mesmerizing -> I watched the *whole* video without any speed-ups nor skips despite the fact I play this every single day as my warm up routine. Amazing job. PS: "we almost there... not really" @20:00 :) PPS: great recovery @26:50
This is the kind of stuff we did in drum and bugle corps everyday first thing in the morning. It got everyone focussed and on the same page but the first week of this it would make the toughest of us hurt everywhere. At camps in the fall and winter before we had tryouts this stuff would weed out the wimps and impatient want to be drummers.
i use this in multiple ways, as demonstrated increasing the speed, as singles, doubles, paradiddles, on my practice kit, dbl. bass, combos between hands and feet, isolation exercises such as blast beats or french grip hand isolation. i have programmed my metronome one click per beat but i find using this at various speeds much more digestible so to speak. with increments of 25 bpm really is a challenge but at the end of each session i find i can quickly gain progress. so many ways to utilize this, its great!
Thanks Heather! Your attention span and steady gaze are a real rare jewel in this highly distracted society. Second run through this for me, found it a couple days ago. After being in the beginner almost intermediate phase of my drumming side of music I got my first gig in a band as drummer at age 49. This kind of thing gets me into shape so I don't get worn out onstage, while challenging my hands to do unfamiliar patterns is making daily improvements in my overall kit playing as I can devote a lot more attention to what my feet are doing with the increasing ease of my arms and hands keeping their patterns going without being interrupted by the feet. It's great to be able to see your hands and not just be reading the notes from the books.
Checking back in after a year. It took until just a couple of weeks ago before I first got a practice pad, then the stick control book. Two weeks on pg. 5, 1-24 and beginning to work on page 6, then a week doing foot exercise with page 5, two days now in a row I've got through all the patterns with at least a minute on each one. Those are still too challenging for me to count how many reps while still holding steady the pattern. I look forward to blooming into greater skill than ever in my life by taking the time to train my muscles in calisthenics with no musical distractions, just a click like a shaman's drum. People say all kinds of things including rudiments don't matter, but I figure most of the drummers who say that play music that's really easy and never practice, only play out. That's fine for people who don't have a calling and a deep desire to continue improving skills and fitness as I age. Bill Bruford has said that these are the vocabulary of modern drumming. It's great to now have the book and a pad cause my legs, though Tai Ji trained to take the blows don't have the bounce of a drum or a pad and my snare is too loud in present settings. Even if I had sound proof studio I'd rather do the calisthenics on the practice pad to save my ears for making music.
This is a great play along video to accompany the stick control book. Great job Heather! I wish all tutorial books came with something like this. I am more of a visual learner so I really enjoyed the video and I followed it no problem!
After some 15-20 playing then hadn’t even picked a pair of sticks for over 15 years, oh the uncoordinated mess. It took till the third time to get all the way to the end. Today was 4th time and there’s a massive improvement, (not like it coulda got worse) it works. Great job Heather, thank you.
I would do this with my students and it seemed to be more fun doing it together. Like you said once you get a few more past halfway you think “oh I could do this again” playing along with you and your yoga Esk voice did feel meditating. Relaxing. You should consider doing other rudimental yoga like videos! I think its kinda what we need right now. Be well, stay healthy, and keep educating!! I look forward to seeing what’s next. ✌🏼
One mini-challenge within the challenge is trying to only hear your own sticks on your pad. It's a kind of sweet spot where you can only hear Heather's voice and the metronome, but not her sticks on the pad. Then you know you are in the zone. It comes and goes but the more you practice the more it happens.
I thank you Heather Thomas. I moved to a townhouse and can’t bring my kit. I’m going back to the basics and working on my rudiments/chops with my drum pad. Love this warm up and your composure. Learning from a master. Your technique, posture, and control are what I strive for!

Great video practice. What a gift. Thank you! At 63 taking up drumming again. This is perfect!

Gave up early. But great vid.
@@julianalderson3938come back!
You literally just explained my life story. Wow. I need to start practicing again.
Hopefully you're in a better place now!
This is great to practice along with. Thank you Heather and Drumeo!
Another way one could practice with this video is to modify the playback speed. This would, of course, change the tempo. The following playback speeds effect the tempo accordingly:
0.25 = 38 BPM
0.50 = 76 BPM
0.75 = 114 BPM
1.00 = 152 BPM
1.25 = 190 BPM
1.50 = 228 BPM
1.75 = 266 BPM
I was actually thinking about this the other day, thank you for figuring out what each BPM ends up being! Might be time for me to kick it up to 190...
I played the video a x2, made it to repetition 15 of step #1, then had to lay down in a dark room for a while. I wasn't even trying to play along :-D.
Wendy Williams Now where are your drum videos my friend? I want to see you play! I’m on year 3 and I’m lousy but I’m still working hard at it! 🙃
Her: We're almost halfway there
Me: We're almost livin' on a prayer.
HAHAH
too good
LMMFAO RIGHT
Ghost thats cute. Ty
Damn, one take with no mistakes, talking over it and counting. Super impressive.
My hands were so sweaty that I was
tightening and loosening my grip. By the last # 24 I was saying under my breath. "Mama Dada paradiddle" What a brilliant lesson this truly is.
#24 had me beat until I saw your mama dad paradiddle comment! Thanks!
Just did this on a kit w a Samba foot pattern. Dare ya to go for it! I had to go back 10 secs a few times to get a couple shakey ones down.
Thanks for the video! 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Thank you for your idea, did it to on 0,75x speed, great practicing!
My highschool instructor used to have me do this during private lessons... especially fun with the 5-6-7-8 para-diddle patterns.
I took an informal drum lesson with a friend that took one lesson with Heather Thomas, it changed my entire game. Thank you drum goddess 😇
that's amazing! Who was it???
Mindfulness and drumming at the same time. What a great new daily routine. Thanks!
I used it every other day now ... thank you!
Boot Camp is the right way to put it. This is a difficult exercise to do cleanly and consistently for the entire duration.
This is exactly what I needed right now. I just recently picked this book and wanted something to practice to, thank you for all your hard work!
Awesome! Enjoy the practice. 🙂
@@DrumeoOfficial and it, s funny to ✌🏽
Thanks a lot
This is my favorite piece of drum practice content on the internet
I started in November last year (2023) and now it’s the end of June (2024) and I just played through the entire video without a mistake for the first time 💪
I’m going to continue to keep it as part of my routine and use this video (because I have been) to play through the next two pages because I just like the format!

First time. Not a drummer. Im a singer/guitarist.
Trying to level up my drumming. Loved it
Heather, Thank you so much for this.
Playing drums really helps out with my ptsd, thanks heather....
I know
I just want to say thank you. I feel it's so important to recognize the mindful work that goes into progress. This is a video I can just play to. I feel you've made the goal of progress much more obtainable. Please keep doing what you're doing.
Haha this is like meditation with a heart monitor and tap tap tap instead of crashing waves on the beach. Love it!
Her breathing kind of sounds like waves crashing actually. LOL
I used this book as a late teen beginning drummer.Never realized how important it would be playing all through my life.
This is the bible for drummers.
I hope you don't mind two small things where I disagree with your routine:
a) why should I STAND while I'm practicing - I am a drumset player and I have to sit to do my job.
b) Mr Stone wrote his book in 'cut-time' so the metronome also should "click" in cut-time.
Please let me add some further suggestions:
Practice all routines first with wrist-motion only, then again with finger-control only, using the push-pull technique.
Thank you for your clear and understandable presentation - I am sure it will open many new doors for beginning drummers.
Please stay healthy and continue your great work. Thank you!!!
nice suggestion on practicing wrist motion only and then finger control only! will definitely try this
Having someone to practice with, even if it’s in a video, is much appreciated.
If you notice any pain, just notice it.
Great advice.
:)
Literally could not do single stroke rolls on my snare before I started practicing this, this has really been a huge huge huge help.
Almost thru my first year of "banging" the drums in 50 yrs. Having so much fun and the Stick Control Challenge is great, everyday for the past 2 weeks. Thank you / Joey

Breathing & relaxing my jaw while playing has been something I've been working on for awhile & I appreciate the breathing reminders. Thx Heather!

You are an inspiration to all us lazy wannabe drummers....keep at it and please embarrass the hell out of us‼️👍🏻

It's seems boring, but it's the exercise that every drummer should do, to improve their skills, thank for that Heather and Drumeo .
That's what separates the pros from the amateurs - the discipline to push through hours and hours of boring practice routines.
@@EricT43This is very true. Gotta build a solid foundation first!
Okay excellent, now a nice follow up. The orchestral snare part from Bolero.
Thank you for the refocus Heather and Drumeo.
First-time at that speed. Some of those exercises really showed me how far I have to go lol. Great get. Every drummer should watch this
I'm new to drumming an this is the best thing out there for Georges stick control. I hope you continue with the book and do more pages.
I feel the way you put the notes on paper for L an R makes it easier to play. THANK YOU HEATHER T.
...I love this..I got carpal tunnel just watching it and got slightly hypnotised in the middle of the video, but I am going to give this a try! Thanks
Beautiful graceful and perfectly demonstrated. Students young and old, just keep watching and imitate.
Been playing this book since 1971,.... Killer concentration to do the whole page 20x each,.... WTH!
Hi Heather, I've been following this routine for a month now and my weak left hand has vastly improved, thank you so much.
I once built an atom and used this to warm up
Initially I thought fine I'll be able to do it all.. Half way through this is ************ TOUGH.. and she does it so seamlessly.. Hats Off..!!
Yeah, Girl!!!❤️. I love your discipline!
I just did this with my feet. Now I need a nap! Great video! And you can use stick control for you feet too, not just your hands! Same wins apply.
PS: "we almost there... not really" @20:00 :)
PPS: great recovery @26:50
This is the kind of stuff we did in drum and bugle corps everyday first thing in the morning. It got everyone focussed and on the same page but the first week of this it would make the toughest of us hurt everywhere. At camps in the fall and winter before we had tryouts this stuff would weed out the wimps and impatient want to be drummers.
Me at my next band practice.
Bandmates:"So what do you guys want to play today?"
"Hmmm, how about something in 152BPM?"
LOL
My practice pad and stand and sticks arrives tomorrow. And my journey begins. Thank you so much for this,
i use this in multiple ways, as demonstrated increasing the speed, as singles, doubles, paradiddles, on my practice kit, dbl. bass, combos between hands and feet, isolation exercises such as blast beats or french grip hand isolation. i have programmed my metronome one click per beat but i find using this at various speeds much more digestible so to speak. with increments of 25 bpm really is a challenge but at the end of each session i find i can quickly gain progress. so many ways to utilize this, its great!
This has changed my drumming. I would happily buy each video of each page, in same format. AMAZING
use this now everyday for a warm up before going on the kit. Really helping my weak left hand. Thanks for putting this out
Thanks Heather!
This has helped me way more than I thought it was going to, my god. I'm very thankfull for this :)
Wow! You kept up with it for a half an hour. You probably do this every day! Awesome! Great lesson! Thanks.
Did she just play this all the way through? 30 minutes of unbroken concentration? What the hell. That’s incredible.
@Bec White Honestly, I'm not sure I could have played 4 measures as evenly as she played 30 minutes.
Wow, love this. I felt my weak hand improve half way through. This will be a daily staple. Thank you!
Excellent video; This is exactly the George Lawrence Stone grip and stroke technique. Relaxed yet precise. A great model for beginners and advanced.
Vincent Buonora I wish more people such as yourself made more positive comments like that. Thank you sir!
One mini-challenge within the challenge is trying to only hear your own sticks on your pad. It's a kind of sweet spot where you can only hear Heather's voice and the metronome, but not her sticks on the pad. Then you know you are in the zone. It comes and goes but the more you practice the more it happens.
Yes, that’s what I noticed. If you can’t hear her sticks, just the voice in the Metronome you’re right where you need to be awesome practice.
Meditation guided by Heather's gentle voice. Thank you 🙏
This is meditation for drummers
Great video as always! It is why we love Drumeo!
I was totally unable to concentrate on warm up exercices for 30mn straight all by myself, but thanks to this video it felt soothing 😊
I thank you Heather Thomas. I moved to a townhouse and can’t bring my kit. I’m going back to the basics and working on my rudiments/chops with my drum pad. Love this warm up and your composure. Learning from a master. Your technique, posture, and control are what I strive for!
