I watched every episode, I enjoyed much of it. I'm frustrated that the creators aren't releasing the 5th season outline online. Great video though, keep up the good work!
Part of why it failed is the writers became obsessed with outsmarting the audience. Specifically, randoms on Reddit that had the time to write up novellas about their theories. They should have ignored Reddit and focused more on telling the story they set out to tell from the start.
The No heroes and two trick pony points is basically why i stopped watching the show- at first i was intrigued by the western atmosphere and the characters interweaved stories but soon found most characters annoying and insufferable ( specifically dolores in season two: i just couldn’t root for her which is really difficult when she’s leading revolution ) and i gave up after being bored throughout season 3. Once your out of the interesting setting and don’t like the characters, it’s hard to keep going
An issue that the show ran into after season 1 was the writers trying to outsmart the audience. This happened because certain fans theorized correctly the twist of season 1. This caused the writers to have Season 2 be more convoluted so the show could stay ahead of viewers. Which made S2 messy and not as enjoyable Later seasons moved away from this type of storytelling, but the show never recovered from. In a way the show was a victim of its own success.
I think the issues with the show were for 2 reasons 1. The entire basis of the show seems to be "Cruelty is universal nature and trait". The main purpose of the series setting is a period theme park that was co produced by the military to examine extreme cruel and sadistic behavior by observing how differing guests treat the robotic "attractions" to either control or manipulate any hostile nations by understanding how general cruelty starts and operates. Presumably one would think someone like dangerous prisoners would be sent to the park as they would treat the robots no differently then people on the outside and would be willingly sadistic. it would even make sense that the "park" would be revealed to be a supermax prison where criminal behavior is researched and observed. Execpt it isnt that the show makes quite clear that its ordinary citizens entering the park. Yet the show insists that due to this behavior research technology violence has been controlled nearly worldwide but somehow "Hell is empty and All the Devils are here" meaning these parks are literally the only remaining area that humanity commits any form of crime or violence. Then why is the park still used as a observation station of criminal behavior? wouldnt they have collected enough research to control the violent tendencies of society that they wouldnt really need this park anymore? which leads to the 2nd point. 2. The writers (as with most remakes/boots) miss the point of the story. The entirety of both jurassic park and this series can be summed up in one line from the first Jurassic film "The Pirates of the Carribean ride may break down but you dont think the pirates are going to eat the tourists". The original intent of the original script was a direct critique on corporate corruption and neglect as the danger of the first film is a single robot going rogue after park technicians and managers either run poor repair or outright ignore the possible issue leading to a incident. The point of this show seems to be "if you intentionally make the pirates smart enough that nature takes over....somehow and they Will eat the tourists" but that takes away from the central point of the story. After several seasons the moral of the show isnt "corporate neglect is bad" or "industry uncaring about how the product is produced or ignoring what how it will or may be used is bad" Its more just "if big company make thing, thing may be bad and destroy everything so......thing must never be allowed to exist??" the story should have just to its main point of neglect by big industry is wrong and must be addressed but now even if it gets either a renewal or a movie wrapping it up its either going to be a terminator knock off or some bizarre apocalyspe story that has no real point or related moral
The 'no heroes' part was what ruined it for me. I loved it in season 1 (because I was invested in William and Dolores) but didn't watch much more than half way through season 2. The most I could say after season 1 was that it had some pretty scenery and it got me thinking about when something becomes real and alive. But for the latter point, reading a philosophy book would probably be better. So it was just a show with some really scenic and violent moments. That's not enough to carry a whole show. I would only recommend the first season.
I also stopped half way through the second season. The first season was almost perfect but then the story got lost --the writers wrapped up the mystery too fast and then there was nothing but humans vs robots action and that's not what made the first season great.
Babylon 5 figures!!! Why do I feel like the show would have ended with a time loop or something had they "finished" it? Someone would have gone back to prevent it, but it would end up happening no matter what...similar to what the late-stage Terminator movies (or at least Genisys) tried to show us. Maybe they would have stopped the development of robots, but then we see a scientist begin working on holograms...or heck, maybe even clones or something. I dunno, I just feel like that's where cynical sci-fi likes to go. One of the best "arguments" I have heard surrounding the dip in quality post season 1 was time. I guess the show was being developed and worked on for something like 12 years before the first season was even filmed. That much time and effort can't be replicated within a year or so between seasons. Now you could argue that maybe they should have spent those 12 years coming up with a solid 5 year plan or something, but I guess it's too late for that now.
It failed because they the writers of the show changed the plot storyline of the show. Or they took in new writers. And they didnot continue storylines or forgot about it since they never look back. And they were out of imagination what to do with the characters. And you got hooked to the stories. They left it out there because they don't know what to make up of the show they just end it.

Really enjoy your videos about shows. You have interesting takes and ideas that are fun to ponder.

Amazing video very well explained
1: You didn't write it
2: I didn't produce the score
3: even funnier 3rd reason
