Hi Kale, I am an beginner/intermediate surfer, I started with an high volume board, but some time ago I moved to a shortboard improving a lot the maneuver and I love it. Now I am a little confused about different boards for different conditions, in details in smaller and less powerful waves is it better to increase the volume or just having a different board shape?
Hey there! I'm 1.81m x 91kg (5'11" x 200lb), did 4/5 surf sessions and am already hooked to it (quite obvious coming from skate/snowboard)! I want to buy a beginner surfboard to start progressing solidly, what about a 7'8" 75L foamie or the same board but 8'6" 90L volume? Any other suggestions like a mini mal? Thx!
we surf the Great lakes and with the inconsistent waves and less bouyant water volume is key, on our side we have 90% sand bottom and it moves a lot so the 9' and longer can be an issue if its breaking in 2ft one day and 5 the next... great vid!! yeew

You use the Happy Hour Softboard with a wetsuit... Wondering if your skin and body gets scratch or hurt not using the wetsuit? Is this a rough surfboard to use in warm areas like caribbean?
He never talks about using and not using your feet on the end of the board. This is a major factor for beginners. I think sometimes if you are too experienced it’s difficult to teach and you can miss things.
Thanks for getting back to me I appreciate your response and apologies if the message implied anything, I wasn’t expecting an answer, although I should have assumed I would get one. I really like your videos I’m a big fan. Anyway over here in Europe you see a LOT of “holiday surfers” and I always see damaged knees when people go from the longer boards to shorter boards. This seems to be because they cannot use their feet over the end to hold their weight, and end up damaging their knees or even just above them. It probably doesn’t help that their skin is softened by the water. I felt this was detail that would have been worth mentioning especially when choosing your board. I just felt this had not really been addressed fully. I could be mistaken. I was a victim of this myself and I know others who have been. I hope I have explained this well enough. Perhaps you Aussies have more of a natural ability from growing up near the beach etc. Anyway thanks for your time and I very much enjoy your videos. Cheers mate.
Hey man, love your videos. I am riding a 6 6 soft top right now. I would consider myself a beginner still but was wondering if you would recommend the lost rnf 96? I really want to transition to a short board. I am use to skating and snowboarding and just riding smaller boards in general. I am 6 ft 3 and about 185 pounds. There are only 2 sizes a 5 11 and 5 9. Let me know your thoughts thanks !
Would you recommend more liters when the waves aren't as powerful? We live in the North of North Holland, The Netherlands, and the lower waves for beginners aren't that powerful. I want to start practicing turning and surfing along the rail but the waves on clean days are usually pretty small. However I feel that too many liters slow me down too much and the board isn't being sucked into the wall of the wave as easy.
Great Tips! Thanx 4UR Time! With soft top boards everyone has a propensity to shy away from them because they believe that there's no cool factor involved but quite the contrary, isn't it? You pointed out all the Cool Factors Out; Lightweight & Comfortabilities = Ease of Paddling - Stability Paddling & in Stance - Softer on the Noggin and most importantly progress in performance ''Yea Brah!'' Totally Catching Waves & Looking Somewhat Good at it Beats Struggling and Looking Like a Barney! "FOR SURE!'' Just Reiterated Everything You Said Brock, Sorry Just Got a Bit Excited, Actually.. 🌊 🌊 🌊🏄♂️ 🤪
Another great vid, thanks. Yes, I always thought foamies were only for beginners, thanks for setting me straight there. I am interested that you didn't mention weight or height of the surfer. I am beginner/intermediate surfer, I am 6ft3in and about 100kg - I have found that I need something much bigger (volume) and longer than an equivalent surfer who is 5ft10in and 75kg! Would you not factor in surfer height and weight into your purchasing considerations? Cheers.
Rule of thumb for a beginner get a board thats a foot longer than your height. 22 inches wide is a good width . Not too much rocker in the tail or the nose. 5 8 seems a bit short for a beginner board tbh.
I was told by the shop a 6’6”wasn’t for me because I was new to surfing however I’ve been doing board sports my whole life and consistently snowboard powder which actually correlates more than you realize they suck me on a 9’ and got up on my first wave I tried on and I was bored by the end of my first session next time my buddy let me use his a 5’8” foamy that really allowed me to understand turning so much better I hate when shop guys pretend they are the all knowing eye especially because I’m a skinny guy I don’t need all the literage to stay up
Hey man, can a beginner surfer switch immediately to a retro fish after 4 sessions on a long board? Or even without experience on a long board, can you actually learn to surf on a retro fish? Thanks man!
Hey kale! Is volume more important than length? I’m 5’9” and 125lbs and I found a board that’s 6’0” foamie that’s 42 L of volume. Would that be a good board for me? I don’t want a board too big like the one I use now, or too squirly if you know what I mean. I need your opinion!
@@supercooldude824 yep I got the board! It’s taken some time to get used to but I feel way safer on it, and can get steeper waves which mean more progress!
I started learning on a 7'2" Walden Mega Magic. Still a beginner, and still learning a lot after a year, but I'm thinking about investing in a 7'6" sharper nose board with less volume. The mega magic will still serve a purpose but bigger days its just too much. Thoughts?
I just started surfing this summer and really wanna get my first board, im just wondering if your weight has a part to play when choosing the right board, alot people suggest to me a 8 foot board as I am 80kg, I don't mind the big board but I really wanna advance my mobility
Exactly a year ago my softboard hit my neck while learning to go down the line. It hurt a bit and I didn't react on time with my hands for protection. Today a similar thing happened with my longboard, I just blocked it with my palms.. Can't imagine what would have happened if I didn't... Man a longboard hitting you really hurts
That O&E board only goes up to a 7"6, what would you recommend for someone at 90kg/6"2? I'm weighing up between a 9"-ish longboard, or a shorter 8"-ish foamy.
Various surf shops and websites tell me 6.5’ foamies are only ok for lighter weight surfers. I’m 75kg so it looks like I will need a 7’6. Is that right or is there something else at play?
So I got an 8" foam longboard to start out on but I am wondering if I should of went shorter. I am 6" myself I don't know if that has anything to do with it. The waves here are usually around 3" with 6-second intervals.
Kale, great video as always! You have got to be one of, if not the best surfing instructor on UA-cam. I had a question: I am stuck in a landlocked state and only get to surf when I go on vacation so when I rent a surfboard, say in a place like San Diego, they ask if I'm a beginner which I reply yes. Then I am handed a 9' or 10' board and go on my way. What wording should I use to rent a shorter but more volume foamy? That way I can duck dive easier but still have the paddling stability? Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I clicked on the link to purchase the board you have, but it keeps saying you literally have no boards on the site. Do you not have any for sale?
I just started surfing and bought my first board, a 9ft Hot Curl foamie. I am an aspiring longboarder so thought it would make sense to start with a longboard too. I know you’ve just been getting more into long boarding but do you have any thoughts on progression for a longboarder?
Tldr: yes you do want a hardtop longboard due to the rails and other capabilities of the board. This is as any personal advice heavily dependant on what your current level and ambitions. If your are really looking into traditional logging you can get far on your 9,0. As apart from the standard popup, green waves and angled take offs you have a lot more to learn that comes down to technique rather than manouvers based on mobility. I.e. Crosstepping, faded take off, stalling and positioning on the wave. However, yes there is a point a hardtop becomes better. That has to do with the contours and compared to a foamie a lot with the rails of the board. For instance a cutback or carving turn on a foamie is hard, because the board does not want to due to its chunky thick rails. Not impossible but limiting for sure if carving turns becomes the next thing to learn. And yes, you do want to start learning these eventually. Edit: faded take offs might also give you some trouble due to thick rails.
Kale, as of late i have been struggling with the motivation aspect of getting out there, i have not had this problem in my surfing career thus far. Any recommendation?
Love it. My catch surf log is great for novelties and a well executed turtle roll is super helpful to get out back. Your yoga ball exercises helps a great deal to build up that paddle strength.
I've been surfing on my wavestorm for a while now. I can pop up consistently, do top and bottom turns, and am overall just pretty comfortable on it. I've been getting frustrated at how much effort it takes to turn it, and I want to start shortboarding. I'm about 140lbs and 6feet tall. I also have an extremely limited budget. I found a board on craigslist with these dimensions: 6'10 x 20 x 2 3/8. I have no way of finding out the volume :/ it's only 50 dollars because it's got a few dings, but they can be fixed easily with some solarez. This board seems like the solution. is it?
You've definitely made me very interested in looking into getting a foamie to progress my riding. I'm 140lb and somewhere inbetween beginner and intermediate. I'm thinking of getting a Mullet Tombstone 5'10. Any advice? Thanks
Been surfing the longer foamies too long it seems. I’ve been choosing a 7 or 8 foot foamie most summers when renting. Maybe time to choose a 6.5 by the sounds and see the difference. I could easily get a 6.5 inside my car too

'Just do it' Nike slogan .... you have to prove to dad & yourself competence ... start doing swimming laps of the pool, watch vids & surfers in action- all the time you're learning. Do the 'land' fitness/bal exercises .. also aquire a suitable used board (~2ft) longer than yourself wax ... lay the board on a Beanbag and do everything you want to do in the surf. Have you tried the Formula Fun Board? Or has anyone else? I was thinking of getting one but wanted a true opinion. Website below... What is the highest recommended foamie for a beginner progressing to intermediate, and very athletic?
Hi Kale! Love the videos! I'm eyeing up the specific board you mentioned in the video and have a few questions. Coming from a foamie myself, Catch Surf Round nose fish, I was wondering how stiff this board is. Ocean and Earth mentions it's the epoxy range, but what does that mean? Is it an epoxy hard board wrapped with the grippy soft top? Does it have a more "real surfboard" feel (meaning very minimal flex)? I've heard similar raving reviews about the mick fanning range and Softech has recently released two epoxy models, which are pretty much what I've mentioned above (epoxy boards wrapped in a soft top)! How does the happy hour stack up? Looking forward to your response! Shakas from the Mediterranean!
Kale - Great stuff! I just finished your "Ultimate Surfboard Buying Guide course. It totally changed how I'm looking at my potential progression as a beginner surfer. Quick question: In the Buying Guide, you use a formula to calculate the correct volume of a board. Is that same formula applicable to foam boards? Thanks and keep shredding!
@@KalesBroccoli Thanks! Just to clarify, if the formula tells me I should have a board with a volume of 59 liters, even on a foamie, I should shoot for that? (I love the board you show in the video, but that appears to be too "small" for me at this point if the equation holds true.)
Hey Kale, been watching ur stuff for a while and really appreciate the time and effort you put in, I’ve learnt a lot! But I am a beginner and I was just wondering if I should go for a 7ft foamie? My heights 170cm. Cheers!

Thx!
we surf the Great lakes and with the inconsistent waves and less bouyant water volume is key, on our side we have 90% sand bottom and it moves a lot so the 9' and longer can be an issue if its breaking in 2ft one day and 5 the next...
great vid!! yeew
same thing here , north shore of st-laurence quebec .... :(
Can’t wait to come try one day!
@@jsthiffo9568 surfing the lakes is a different beast , no sharks or razor reef or stingy fish... however.
we have to get stoked abt surfing knee high full onshore wind chop in 20 degree weather..... ;) almost as scary as a shark lol;)
Is there a lot of difference in maneuverability between, for example, a 6'6 and a 7' softech roller?
You use the Happy Hour Softboard with a wetsuit... Wondering if your skin and body gets scratch or hurt not using the wetsuit? Is this a rough surfboard to use in warm areas like caribbean?
I’m 5’11 285 beginner, what should I get
He never talks about using and not using your feet on the end of the board. This is a major factor for beginners. I think sometimes if you are too experienced it’s difficult to teach and you can miss things.
Thinking about the feet doesn’t work. Eyeline and leading hand should be the focus - I have mentioned this in several videos
Good stuff Kale! Was great meeting you out there at Pondie!
Awesome to meet ya Sebby!
What size foamie would be best for someone that is 56in
U think catch surf RNF 6'5 is good for first board, 6’5” x 21.5” x 3.0” (56 Liters)
Bought wave bandit 7'0 and i'm stoaked to learn how to surf.
Was it a good beginner board? That’s what I was thinking of getting
Hi I am starting into surf, would you recommend a inflatable surf board?
No
Why?
"FOR SURE!'' Wowza
Would it be possible to duck dive with a shorter softie?
Another great vid, thanks. Yes, I always thought foamies were only for beginners, thanks for setting me straight there. I am interested that you didn't mention weight or height of the surfer. I am beginner/intermediate surfer, I am 6ft3in and about 100kg - I have found that I need something much bigger (volume) and longer than an equivalent surfer who is 5ft10in and 75kg! Would you not factor in surfer height and weight into your purchasing considerations? Cheers.
Yeah I talked a bit about this in my surfboard buying guide
could I take a 6'0 Happy Hour, if I am 175 cm tall with 65 kilos? more intermediate than beginner
iv just purchased Hot surf 69 foam 7ft board
Am I going to be able to learn on the 5’ foamie fish I just bought?
No
Rule of thumb for a beginner get a board thats a foot longer than your height.
Thanks man!
great video thanks!
Hey kale! Is volume more important than length? I’m 5’9” and 125lbs and I found a board that’s 6’0” foamie that’s 42 L of volume. Would that be a good board for me? I don’t want a board too big like the one I use now, or too squirly if you know what I mean. I need your opinion!
Did you get the board? How’s the progress
@@supercooldude824 yep I got the board! It’s taken some time to get used to but I feel way safer on it, and can get steeper waves which mean more progress!
@@death_knell sick, was it your first board or did you have some surfing experience before?
I started learning on a 7'2" Walden Mega Magic. Still a beginner, and still learning a lot after a year, but I'm thinking about investing in a 7'6" sharper nose board with less volume. The mega magic will still serve a purpose but bigger days its just too much. Thoughts?
I just started surfing this summer and really wanna get my first board, im just wondering if your weight has a part to play when choosing the right board, alot people suggest to me a 8 foot board as I am 80kg, I don't mind the big board but I really wanna advance my mobility
I would go with your friend’s recommendation. An 8’ foam board seems ideal.
I’m curious I have two 6 foot foamys one has a rounded end and the other pointed which one would be better for beginners?
Love the video!! You should make a video about a fish surfboard for late beginner/early intermediate as well. Thanks!
Depends on that persons abilities
Various surf shops and websites tell me 6.5’ foamies are only ok for lighter weight surfers. I’m 75kg so it looks like I will need a 7’6. Is that right or is there something else at play?
can you give a bit of advice on suitable foamie board size for a beginner who's say 90kg?s 174cm tall? Beginner.
Thanks!
Just ask for something for manoeuvrable as you want to start surfing on the open face :) thanks buddy
@@KalesBroccoli Okay, perfect! Thanks so much, Kale! Cheers
Thanks for the video. I clicked on the link to purchase the board you have, but it keeps saying you literally have no boards on the site. Do you not have any for sale?
Sorry we don’t sell boards but try the O&E website 🤙🏽
Change boards change beaches change who you surf with
Love it. My catch surf log is great for novelties and a well executed turtle roll is super helpful to get out back. Your yoga ball exercises helps a great deal to build up that paddle strength.
Awesome !!
Any advice? Thanks
So, I am 240 lbs 6' tall, will that board recommendation work for me?
Been surfing the longer foamies too long it seems. I’ve been choosing a 7 or 8 foot foamie most summers when renting. Maybe time to choose a 6.5 by the sounds and see the difference. I could easily get a 6.5 inside my car too

Ive always wanted to learn to surf since i was 6, im currently 14 and im still begging my dad to let me, he does like it and is afraid i get hurt, which i understand but i wanna learn so baddd😭

'Just do it' Nike slogan
.... you have to prove to dad & yourself competence ... start doing swimming laps of the pool, watch vids & surfers in action- all the time you're learning.
Do the 'land' fitness/bal exercises .. also aquire a suitable used board (~2ft) longer than yourself wax ... lay the board on a Beanbag and do everything you want to do in the surf.
In time your father will allow you to continue passion & training in a gentle surf 🤙🤟 yeah
I surfed up till I was 39yo. This is how my 8yo son is learning... only he started on a Bodyboard aged 5yo.

Hey, i have got a question re buying my first foamy, iv taken several lessons and can stand up regularly, i calculated my volume based on your surfboard buying guide and the volume i calculated for myself is approximately 76L (95 x 0.8) - i am 181cm tall and 95kg, iv been thinking about getting the catch surf log , the 7ft log has a volume of 72L and the 8ft has a volume of 86L - im not sure which to get.
What did u end up getting ? And any recommendations for someone just starting with the same exact height and weight ?
is that ok if i use 7 ft softboard instead of 6.6'' ft ?
was wondering why my board was so tiring in the surf lol. It was my first session but my board is 8ft and im 70kg's. Might look at a smaller board.
Have you tried the Formula Fun Board? Or has anyone else? I was thinking of getting one but wanted a true opinion. Website below...
What is the highest recommended foamie for a beginner progressing to intermediate, and very athletic?
Can u do a video with “The best surfboards for beginner fiberglass surfboard users”
Yep! Though remember foamies will naturally have a little more buoyancy
Cheers!
Go for it!
