I've owed all of popular column arrays (Evolve 50, RCF Evox12 & Evox8, LD Maui 44G2 and the LD Maui 900's). My favorite of them all is probably the Evox12. But I sold them all opting for the QSC LA 108 Line Array Speakers paired with either the QSC KS112 or KS118 subwoofers. It gives me a lot more flexibility and lots of headroom, which I was missing with all of the column array systems. It is also super easy to setup and configure. It has an incredible DSP that does everything for you. The sound is amazing and I'm never lacking power.
I definitely believe that's an amazing system, I really like QSC stuff, but that is definitely a lot more work than a column array! It's probably as easy as it can be
QSC is excellent but not cheap and if you dont have a big car to transport it can be a problem.. I dont have big car. But its just for sure QSC speakers and subs are best
@@glowbright I’ve used them at about a dozen events. I always run at least two per side. You have to get them up high and dial them in. They look great and have a ton of power. I will never go back to a column array system 😂😂😂
Congrats on your purchase - Evox 12s are really nice. I went from QSCs 12.2/KS118 (still have those speakers for bigger event), got the RCF J8s (easy to transport but quickly out grew them - sold them), got the RCF Evox 12s. Then last year, I came across a great deal on a pair of 44g2 (in white - thanks to AGI DJ Pro). After using both for almost a year - I sold the Evox 12s and kept the 44s. I just liked the full range tuning of the 44g2s a bit better (got tons of compliments from my clients because of the esthetic and sound). But I agree with you - both are great. I do however miss how much easier it was to transport the Evox 12s.
I recently bought a set of J8s and a set of Evox 12s to go full RCF, I can tell you this my set up time and portability with the Evox J8s was so much easier and faster that Im very satisfied as for the sound I just keep all levels at unity and let the speakers to their thing. I am going to use the Evox 12s next week with around 250 guests and I can not wait!! for me the weight factor compensates for many things. congratulations on your new Speakers!!
I too just went full RCF (except I still have my EON 612's). I sold my JBL 915's and 715XLF subs. I now own a set of RCF J8's and just bought the RCF EVOX 12's....I love them both. I do school dances so I may need to get a set of 932's and a 708 subs, but I just did a dance and the EVOX 12's held their own.
Congrats on snagging the Evox 12’s! It's always exciting to hear about fellow DJs finding gear that they're really happy with. The Evox 12s are definitely solid speakers, I love mine, and it's awesome to hear that you chose them over the Maui LD 44s It's interesting that comments mentioned the LD 44s and Point source speakers. Sound preference can be so subjective, right? But yeah, those LD 44 subwoofers can be beasts to haul around, so totally get why you opted for something more manageable. And regarding the comments about point source speakers, it's worth checking out different perspectives. Sometimes it's surprising what you can learn from others' experiences. But hey, if the Evox 12s are delivering the volume you need and then some, that's what matters most! Keep rocking those sets, and thanks for sharing your insights! 🎧🎶
I don't always trust Bluetooth but it's cool that it has that feature! To adjust the direction, it's in increments of 90 degrees, yeah? And you have to unplug it to adjust it?
I own the RCF EVOX 12 and I love them! Great sound and portability is important to me (since I dj alone) the highs are crispy and the lows bang. I was lucky to get these a few years when they came out. Got them as “open box” and i saved like $1.5K. Back then both were about $5k now they’re about $6.5k so i got very lucky. If you guys are interested in a pair, i totally recommend them. Also, look around to see if you can find an open box somewhere and save some money.
iI love my RCF speakers; the model I have is the 12, and they produce excellent sound. Nobody asks me if I need louder music, even when entertaining 150 people. They are easy to transport. However, if you're a wedding DJ for 300-400 people, then you'll need a larger system. Additionally, the venue where you play is important. If it's a huge hall with fewer people and high walls, it can present a problem. Another good thing is, as you mentioned, you can direct the speakers towards the dance floor, while the other people who prefer not to dance and simply sit and talk can still enjoy the music.
Great topic Daryl! I used to own a pair of RCF J8-s, but these were too noisy for me - they were rather noisy on high volumes and the bass was not good with the plastic cabinets of the subs. Then I moved on to HK Polar 12-s: these were a bit better, as their subs were made of wooden cabinets and the bass was wayyyy better. But still, the same issue with sound: noisy on high volumes, not good for outdoor events were mics were used (as these column arrays are small, they do not provide enough pressure in outdoor and sometimes even indoor scenarios). Also, I had the same issue with all them as you had with your car: I had to always consider before EVERY event, if I can use them or are they powerful enough. I had many gigs with even 50 people were I felt that the column array is just not sufficient. They are made for small rooms - to be honest, Polar 12-s were perfect for my living room with 30 sqm and on mid volumes. And the clarity of sound just s*cked. You need something more universal and bulletproof. Forget about the "aesthetics". Speakers are speakers and people are used to them. Usually these are not speakers that look ugly, but the cabling, lighting setup, DJ booth etc. So it's better to stick to that principle and make the setup look professional overall. In the end of last year, I decided to sell all my columns and get back to "good old" sub + top setup using RCF ART-9-AX + RCF SUB 905 AS mk3 (pretty darn powerful 15" subs, also lightweight to carry around). I won't look back to any column array in a near future, whatever these marketers or reviews say about them. And all I can say is that in 99% I never doubt about my sound system for events, only sometimes with bands where they need a little bit more low end - then I'll just rent 18" subs for these couple events a year. And oh boy - there is a big difference between traditional system vs columns - much more clarity, head room, better sound for mics etc. Also, you can use them modularly - like just one top sometimes for a monitor application or whatever. At the end of the day, column arrays are not good for everyday professional life - why to keep stuff in my warehouse that is not sufficient or I have doubts in? Or that sometimes give me disappointments at events? Column array is a fashion product and I believe that trend will be over soon. Classic top+sub is here to stay - invest into one good setup and you are good to go for another 10 years at least.
@@DJDarylBennett my dream is to get Martin Audio Blackline X setup some day :) A bit pricy but I know that Martin Audio can provide unmatched quality for the next 20 years... had many gigs with some SUPER OLD Martin Audio. Last weekend I played at a club for 1000 ppl with Martin Audio that had been there for the last 20 years! And that sound was like these speakers were made just this year :) The reason I got also RCF this year is that I can use the tops also for side fills (they have built in delay) and also they have built in cross over presets (+ I can make them myself) for subs. The top speaker that never distorts and can properly crossover frequencies between the sub and itself is just fundamentally the best solution I think.
That’s just your opinion. I know many musicians that regularly do concerts around 100/150 people, and he uses a pair of column arrays and a mixer. He delivers a crisp clean sound, and both he and his audience are happy. Granted, he doesn’t play metal…
I'm pretty set on using ElectroVoice for everything I don't mind setting up my ELX setup when I need a bigger sound, I can't wait to for @electrovoice releases a larger Evolve component to compete with the Evox 12 / 44 g2's
Hey Daryl, Just curious , do you have a noticable difference (improvement) from the 50m to you RCFs. Knowing the 50m is new technology, and it's significantly cheaper was it worth the upgrade. I play in a band and perform solo / Duo Acts as well. I have K.2 12 over 181Bins for my bar gigs and bigger events. I have tried the 50m for smaller venues and solos and it worked great. I'm entertaining buying two colum array systems to reduce set up time / ease / not stands . Once system that I have flexibility with. I'm not sure if that is the way to go. Maybe keep what I have and use only on 50m for smaller gigs for instance.. Looking for opinions / advice and recommendations.. I need to be smart with this next purchase.
The 50m is more convenient and easier to make it sound good. I'm happy with the Evox 12, I'm able to get it louder, and leave my tops and subs at home.
I recently went with the Mau 44G2. The major selling point for me was the 4 cones on the top. Every column array I've used (and returned) was loud directly in front, but fell off dramatically a couple feet away. I was considering the evox 12 for years, but was always afraid of paying that much for a speaker and having the same problem. With the Maui's being over 7 feet tall the horns are over peoples heads and they through to the back of the dance floor.
I recently played at a posh venue that was smack dab in the middle of an affluent neighborhood. Limited throw was actually an asset! I didn't make the outdoor dB meter mad But good point and I'm glad the 44g2 is working out for you!
Daryl, think any of these portable column array speaker systems could be used by a 5-piece rock band (keys, guitar, bass, drums, vocals) in bars and restaurants? I would get two of course and place them is stereo. Would the Evox 12 be enough? I was thinking that the LD Maui G3 28 could also do the trick to save a bit on that subwoofer weight.
To be honest, I think two Evolve 50's, Evox J8, or LD Maui G3 28 would be fine for many band gigs. For something huge like an outdoor gig on a stage it might be too small.
Great video Daryl! I went with the Maui 44G2's but my business partner has the Evox12's. I found that the Maui 44 is a very very small amount louder w/ deeper bass due to the much larger sub cab. The upper highs are a little more pronounced because it has the (4) mini horns, whereas the RCF is just 8 full range drivers on top. RCF feels like it is less fragile and you can push it harder without it breaking and it is much more portable. Even though it is only a 20lb difference on the sub, the Maui sub is bulky (can be made easier with the optional caster kit). For small gigs, I still break out the Evox 8 or Evolve 50's and for larger events/big rooms I use DB IG4T tops over RCF8004 subs
Thanks for sharing! I hear people say that these bigger column arrays can handle any size of big crowd, but they have their limits! It's still good to have a normal point source system.
Confusing you bought the 44's but use the Evox 8 or Evolve 50's for small gigs and the DB IG4T tops over RCF8004 subs for larger gigs and i suppose you use the 44's for in between gigs lol!
And you can use lights on the RCF 12 speakers. I have two Equinox Colour Raider Lithium Battery Uplighters, which I use on speaker stands, and they look amazing with SoundSwitch
I went from 4 qsc k12.2 and one qsc kw181 and traded all of it for 4 ev 50s and I almost cried when I did my first gig and realized 2 ev 50s was not enough. I traded 2 and got 2 Evox 12s and man, fell in love. Evox 12s for reception and EV 50 for ceremony and everse 8 for cocktail hour. And one back up ev50. I’m good. Well, kinda want the everse 12 now. Lol
The only reason I went RCF over LD was when I was getting ready to buy, the castors for the LD were sold separately and on indefinite back order. Super happy with my Evox 12’s, but having played on both I think the LD’s probably sound a touch better.
Agree the height difference won't be a major problem as most times i'm on a stage and when on ground they're loud enough for anyone but drunks to move a few feet away from the tops.
Having already the rcf j8 I would lean toward rcf. I never ever peak my j8 they just keep on bumpng. I can't even imagine what the evox 12 is cable of.
@@Nogi-aka-DJNugz You want headroom you need subs with strong wood that weighs if you want a lighter sub it most probably won't go as low or loud also not having any separation on the tops of the RCF is a no go for me.
@@Nogi-aka-DJNugz You want headroom and lower frequencies you need harder wood which weighs more , a friend has the 705 mkII sub it's loud enough but doesn't go low good for smaller bands like jazz or acoustic/backing track acts, i think it's very similar to the Evox 12 sub.
I have the Evolve 50 and love them. We are a 2 personn band and play Greek folk music. I also have 4 ELX200 10P tops and 2 EV EKX15SP subs that I'm selling. For voices and overall rendering the 10 inch is superior for SPL. I'm selling the ELX200 tops and EV subs and I ordered 2 Yamaha DZR15 and 2 Yamaha DZR12 wich output an incredible 139db SPL ! I'll wait before buying a sub, because I might not need them for the kind of music we do.
RCF evox 12 sub has the same output as the RCF 705 sub. That’s their entry level sub, it’s pretty weak. Quite frankly it is possible to achieve the same output with a good 12 inch sub. As you said, the Maui 44 g2 simply puts out more sound. I really do think that RCF should put out a new evox 12 mk2. Especially considering that their new solution (TT 515 & TTS 808) are way more expensive but deliver even less sound than the evox 12.
Im a point source large pa speaker guy. I HATE these smaller systems, saying that I am looking for one for. I want to send my team out to smaller events where small pa and compact size in in order. To start in the game I am thinking the EV Evolve 50 after seeing you out with it on here. Fingers crossed I like how it works for our team.
I chose the 44 and love them but you really can’t go wrong either way. I come from toting 110lb subs and 60 pound top so almost anything is more portable for me.
I went with the 44g2s because of deeper and more presence of Bass. Although I loved the clarity of the Evox 12’s - I just eq the mauis to the same clarity. with THAT - I did RECENTLY buy a pair old evox j8’s over maui 28 G3’s because I wanted a different aesthetic and the swivel top piece makes a difference. Would I make a different decision if I had to do it again with the 44’s… the answer, yea - I should have gotten the RCA… only because - I’ve had issues with height on different spaces. … good luck though - great choice
People should look into the LD CURV 500 TS it's a bit lighter and slightly less power than the 44 but i think would easily sound better than the Evox 12 due to it's curved array like tops.
like youre videos!! got he soundswitch control one becouse of you and i love it 😁 so i just sold my passive subs and im thinking of getting 2x LD icoa 18 to go with my LD icoa 15 tops. how big of a wedding do you think i could do with that setup?
Rn as my setup i have 2 jbl 310 partybox and for 100 people i had some isues with levels but for 80 people they sound great i have invested more in lights than i should have had
In my events I dont need sound to blow people away and thats why I sold my 15 and 18 in EV EKX system. If I'm not in clubs I'm doing a wedding and the Evolve 50 works great.
Some DJs like chest thumping bass at every event, which isn't right or wrong, but evolve 50's aren't capable of delivering that. Like you I'm okay not blowing people away at weddings
Evox 12 imo looks a lot better. The Maui looks cheap to me having that full column vs the skinny pole with speaker on top. Also the front grill of evox is sexy
I own both and the 44s deliver more sound in a wider pattern. And the highs split at the top and not all the way down And it's 30% quieter behind where my booth is
I have the Maui 44. Performance is pretty good. I also have the RCF J8s, great but not enough for 200+ people. I decided on the 44g2 over Evox 12 entirely on aesthetics. They are heavy m@f%$ btw, and thats my only con with the 44s. But overall, it sounds great and looks great. I also have RCF 745 and 8003 for larger gigs.
Do they look better. Yes. Do they sound better than a point source. No. Can I set up a point source with a digital mixer in the same amount of time. Yes. And you can use a point source in many more different applications.
@@DJDarylBennett I hear you. But in reality it's just 2 speaker stands, throw the speakers on top...and place a sub on the floor in the middle. takes me about 60 seconds. And 2 JBL srx and 1 18" sub is going to blow away any column array
@@rjpimprov Not always sometimes you get the odd lead that doesn't work then you need to find a short one to replace it (sup to tops) or go with a long one if that's all you have more Leeds & carrying space needed etc. with a column array you just plug 2 xlr's left and right and if you think about it the columns are like sticking 2 poles in subs after that you don't need to go and get your point source speakers it is quicker for most people you may have it down pat with a full point source set up.
I've tried my hand at many 15" subs but none have fully satisfied me. One day i'll buy the bigger car and upgrade to 18 inch subs. But that's a lot of money so i'm gonna wait a while still.

That's true! I didn't think about mounting lights on the poles
Interesting point
I went from 4 qsc k12.2 and one qsc kw181 and traded all of it for 4 ev 50s and I almost cried when I did my first gig and realized 2 ev 50s was not enough. I traded 2 and got 2 Evox 12s and man, fell in love. Evox 12s for reception and EV 50 for ceremony and everse 8 for cocktail hour. And one back up ev50. I’m good. Well, kinda want the everse 12 now. Lol
The quest gear is never ending lol but sounds like you have your solution worked out!
The only reason I went RCF over LD was when I was getting ready to buy, the castors for the LD were sold separately and on indefinite back order. Super happy with my Evox 12’s, but having played on both I think the LD’s probably sound a touch better.
I like the low profile of the casters on the Evox 12's. I think both systems are great
Agree the height difference won't be a major problem as most times i'm on a stage and when on ground they're loud enough for anyone but drunks to move a few feet away from the tops.
Having already the rcf j8 I would lean toward rcf. I never ever peak my j8 they just keep on bumpng. I can't even imagine what the evox 12 is cable of.
I heard the j8 recently and was surprised at how loud it could get! It looks so small in photos lol
Daryl of the subject a little. What do you think of colorkey movers any thoughts. Looking to invest
great for people 10 ft away.
That 20lb difference is a game changer
I definitely think so
Not to all some people like the better hi's and lower hz bottom end and they'll stomach a bit more weight because of those things.
@@georgegeorgio1751 when transport is a priority the 44s are tough
@@Nogi-aka-DJNugz You want headroom you need subs with strong wood that weighs if you want a lighter sub it most probably won't go as low or loud also not having any separation on the tops of the RCF is a no go for me.
@@Nogi-aka-DJNugz You want headroom and lower frequencies you need harder wood which weighs more , a friend has the 705 mkII sub it's loud enough but doesn't go low good for smaller bands like jazz or acoustic/backing track acts, i think it's very similar to the Evox 12 sub.
The Bose L1 pro 32. Subs are great case you can use them with any tops
People that have that system are die hard fans!
The Yamahas sound incredible, I've had the pleasure of using them once.
Was looking at those M44's , now im looking at the RCF NXL-24a. Seems like a good column array/point source middle ground
Yeah those look like beasts
I definitely think that's the way to go! The evolve 50s are solid
I chose the 44 and love them but you really can’t go wrong either way. I come from toting 110lb subs and 60 pound top so almost anything is more portable for me.
Sounds like my ETX 18 over 15 system haha
To me the Evolve has a more pleasant sound. I’m thinking it’s the DSP. But you are right in that it doesn’t move enough air.
I really do like the dsp of the evolves for sure!
Thank you! You as well
People should look into the LD CURV 500 TS it's a bit lighter and slightly less power than the 44 but i think would easily sound better than the Evox 12 due to it's curved array like tops.
like youre videos!! got he soundswitch control one becouse of you and i love it 😁 so i just sold my passive subs and im thinking of getting 2x LD icoa 18 to go with my LD icoa 15 tops. how big of a wedding do you think i could do with that setup?
SoundSwitch!! 🙌 I think you could do most weddings with that setup.
JBL715's have gotten me through 300 person weddings no problem.
Would like to have a more portable setup that stores easier.
I used to use 15" mains but have really enjoyed having subs and mains now
Within my niche I'm on a European highway most of the time no column array for me point source is my go to. 😢
Point source is great, nothing wrong with that!
Like the 44 better overall sound. Both GREAT speakers my opinion they handle 200 people. Of course the size of the room matters
100% both are great. I like the 44 too
Rn as my setup i have 2 jbl 310 partybox and for 100 people i had some isues with levels but for 80 people they sound great i have invested more in lights than i should have had
Lights are pretty and shiny, I don’t blame you lol
In my events I dont need sound to blow people away and thats why I sold my 15 and 18 in EV EKX system. If I'm not in clubs I'm doing a wedding and the Evolve 50 works great.
Some DJs like chest thumping bass at every event, which isn't right or wrong, but evolve 50's aren't capable of delivering that. Like you I'm okay not blowing people away at weddings
Evox 12 imo looks a lot better. The Maui looks cheap to me having that full column vs the skinny pole with speaker on top. Also the front grill of evox is sexy
I totally agree, especially on the white one
I own both and the 44s deliver more sound in a wider pattern. And the highs split at the top and not all the way down And it's 30% quieter behind where my booth is
That’s pretty cool that it is quieter behind the booth!
@@DJDarylBennett it's so much quieter
I have the Maui 44. Performance is pretty good. I also have the RCF J8s, great but not enough for 200+ people. I decided on the 44g2 over Evox 12 entirely on aesthetics. They are heavy m@f%$ btw, and thats my only con with the 44s. But overall, it sounds great and looks great. I also have RCF 745 and 8003 for larger gigs.
Yeah i honestly think both are good looking speakers, and aesthetics are subjective and I know a lot of people like both!
Do they look better. Yes. Do they sound better than a point source. No. Can I set up a point source with a digital mixer in the same amount of time. Yes. And you can use a point source in many more different applications.
You're quicker than me then! Haha I dread setting up point source over a sub after working with the convenience of column arrays haha
RCF Evox 12
I've tried my hand at many 15" subs but none have fully satisfied me. One day i'll buy the bigger car and upgrade to 18 inch subs. But that's a lot of money so i'm gonna wait a while still.
It's true that 18 subs produce a nice deep sound that 15s just can't do. The EV ELX200 18sp isn't too pricey and isnt too heavy!
Yamaha dxs15xfl or Yorkville es15 if you want a good 15” sub
@@unitedkrewdjs But ugly lower port hole and heavy as an 18.
Just get some qsc 12 k12.2 plus some rcf 935 speaker i used 6 different array system ld jbl ev and rcf never and ever will be used again array Not resale value not the same loud db and speak volumen as regular good quality speaker sorry
Point source is 100% more boom for your buck
I know why you choose those, because you do small parties 😂😂😂
I go where they pay me to go lol
Ay, 1st comment. Lol. I own the EV and honestly it's not it. 🤢

150 or less people, it is more than worth it unless you are doing big parties. Then no column array will touch point source and a sub
@@nodaysoff2005 Trust me it won't be nowhere near suitable for 150 people.
@@Pioneervalleydjs I just did an event with 150. Was it deafening? Not at all. Did it get the job done with compliments? Definitely. But, I built a 6 inch platform with 2x6 so that the speakers can go over people's head. I do a weekly event with 1 speaker for 80 people. No complain
Hey @DJDaryllBennett,
This is a rather unorthodox way to reach out, but im new to SLC and have been involved in the Mobile DJ world for many many years. I've been watching your videos, and i love the way you operate your company.
If you're ever in need of extra DJ's or anyone to help out with lighting, and/or video, I'd love to talk, and send you my resume to see if we would be a good fit.
Thanks so much! Looking forward to hearing back.

Sounda like a plan! Thanks for the intro
