Got chills when Barry Jenkins mentioned Chungking Express. A gorgeous movie. If I'd seen it when I was younger, my direction may have changed from writing to film. Loved hearing everyone's early experience with the movies.
Although Mira seems a bit out of place, since everyone here seems to be American directors I appreciate her being there. She has an interesting perspective on things and helps broaden the discussion and our perception outside of just the US film industry.
Born in America, moved to Australia when he was 12. Been participating in the US movie industry for most his life. I'd qualify that as American. And when I was saying American, I meant these people profit and work within the US film industry, they get nominated for Oscars, they're participants, citizens and well known icons of America cinema. That's what I mean. But In Mel's case, he is an American, both literally because he was born in America, but he also participates and has gained a massive celebrity status from his time in American films.
Neil Kumar These directors (and actors, actresses) do not come together because of him. They come to sit together for an hour, because it's The Hollwood Reporter, promotion for the movie, Oscar campaign time. It has nothing to do with the actual reporter guy. Now if he was a member of HFPA, that would be kinda different. :)
Dr. Dhoom It's different, cause they are not coming for the guy. They are coming for the huge Hollywood newspaper. So it could be anyone sitting there asking the questions. The reporter is not the brand, THR itself is the brand.
This was amazing and the energy coming out of Mel's body is unbelievable. what was really interesting is their line for not telling about themselves unlike actors.
Oliver stone and Denzel Washington and the art of listening, look how interested they are and how carefully they are listening. An example for respecting your fellow directors ❤️
Nice. I agree, but for different reasons. One seems to be fulfilling a promise, the other is being honest and truthful. Look how many people are here to see Mel Gibson and then, Denzel Washington. Denzel is a far better actor than Gibson, however Mel stepped up the struggles between money and manhood for everyone. I bow to most souls on that platform.
The one characteristic that I found so engaging and wonderful with all of them is listening, especially Mel and Denzel because their eyes appear to really focus and absorb all that is happening.
not just that, now more than ever it seems you're not allowed to make mistakes. where is the place to learn? to forgive? to move forward? how is someone supposed to be better if your mistake is hanged over your head and you're not given a place to amend
@@rebx12 - but Mel has never shown remorse, he has never apologized for any of his racist or childish behavior he exhibits; Mel has never atoned for any shameless thing he has done. In his mind, he probably thinks he has done nothing wrong. Yes, he is indeed a great director and actor; but he is severely, mentally disturbed.
Being a teenager in Australia the First Mad Max movie by George Miller was already legendary before Mel did the second one. In that it was made with a fairly low budget. The camera work on that was made the film even more legendary . Then when he did Gallipoli he really did an outstanding acting job. He possibly got the feel for making incredible stories with lower ranking stars and beautiful camera work
I think he's doing a very good job tbh. Some of these people love the attention and could probably speak very long so his role is to make sure everyone can speak. There are some time constraints. I sure wouldn't do it better myself.
@Jesse Montgomery lol. They should put who ever is a good interviewer. In this case yes I agree the lady is the better interviewer. And get out of here with your sexist 'dick' remark.
Mel is a director who can shoot an Oscar worthy movie without any professional actors. This guy literally can take any material, be that actor or script, and make it great art.
This is my favorite thing to watch. Filmmakers talking about every little aspect of the art. I missed my calling as a filmmaker. Listening to this is like watching a life you could've had through a 2way mirror.

Fuck no! Denzel can do that all by himself! No need to involve a racist caveman. He can stick to his romanticizing Braveheart BS,cause those days are over lmao.
The interviewer’s when Mel is talking haw their jaw drop. As if granda is telling his own life story. Mel has this energy and passion telling stories. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Me too. At 1:00:33 He and Damien Chazelle were in the middle of an intersting conversation about seeing eachother's movies and I wish that Damien got to finish his thought and for Barry Jenkins to be able to respond but stupid Galloway had to cut him off and ask about Damien's worst job. This whole roundtable was fantastic but that was the one moment where I really wanted to just punch that man in the face.
Denzel says so much whether he answers or not. The last question he declined and it was as interesting as answering it. The man is pure class. He puts life into it’s proper perspective. Being in his position is a gift that he recognizes. His talent and hard work got him there but still recognizes that he is still very fortunate . If an actor can be a role model it is him!
Mel Gibson was a very bless man , a great acting talent, a great human being and about one of the best looking actors of all time. Denzel is angelic , beautiful man.
Mel getting excited about history and Medici and 15th century is making me excited. I love these roundtables and I love seeing these people show their love and passion for filmmaking.
I cannot emphasize how absolutely jarring that was. These two had a really interesting coincidence story opening up really nice in front of us and this terrible host just interrupts him at the worst part.
ANSWER MY DUMB QUESTION THAT NO ONE SEEMS INTERESTED IN ANSWERING. I hate that host. And they should have ended the discussion naturally at 1:03:40, but they had to ask another dumb question, which brought the whole thing to a halt.
I just watched Hacksaw Ridge and its an absolute masterpiece. It's a shame that Mel Gibson has been out of the spotlight he is a one of the greatest actors of our time and deserves that respect. He is also very engaging to listen to. You feel the emotion in everything he conveys. The patriot and Braveheart were pivotal movies of my childhood. Some of my earliest fondest memories were sitting together with my family watching them on a Friday or Saturday night. Sleep overs with friends. So much Talent
The last 7 minutes or so of this interview are painful to watch. An interesting conversation between Damien and Barry was about to evolve about both their movies and also there was a moment where Oliver Stone was genuinely amazed that Damien's first real script was Whiplash. Both of these conversations were cut short to ask these questions respectively; "What was your best and worst job?" and "What did you get into trouble for as a kid?"
I noticed the moderator's proclivity for interrupting was doing a disservice to the program. An opportunity to hear amazing filmmakers speak with and to each other would be so much better served with another "host." When Favreau hosted a similar roundtable, being a director and writer, he not only asked good questions, he let the guests kind of lead the discussion organically.
It's obvious to us all that Mel Gibson is a marvelous actor and a brilliant director. I am always captivated by him on the screen and behind the camera. He has been a great gift to all movie lovers .
I got so mad when the host cut off Damien Chazelle and Barry Jenkins' exchange towards the end there - that was such a cool coincidence that he didn't let them explain fully. So frustrating.
When Mel speaks he commands attention. He is incredibly wise and eloquent and I am completely inspired by him. He is one of the very top talents to ever exist. I love you Mel
Sounds like he did get emotional and say some anti-semitic things but who the hell cares. 95% of us have said things that could get us in trouble if we were in the Limelight. The guy's an incredible actor and incredible director. If you dissected every great person out there you'd find flaws and stupid things they've done also. It's called being human

Apocalypto is one of the best movies I have seen in my life. And I have no idea why its so much underrated.
W O R D !
A) Mel Gibson made it. B) It portrayed natives as natives. Primitive and brutal. C)Didn't portray natives as victims of white culture.
Because he "cared" so much he had to use real native languages, but he ignored getting any of the actual history correct, you can read about it, it's pretty brutal, and I loved it also I was just young and didn't know it butchered the history worse than a few of his other historical films even.
Kranx Joy a masterpiece!
You nailed it amigo !
I think Mel Gibson and Denzel took this over but i liked to hear all of them but their charisma was much more Powerful.
Mel Gibson looking like Zues but spoke like a poet. I loved it.

And now? He is a director and actor, has to entertain me. I give a shit about his private life and thinking. The same about Scientology. I‘m not interested in things that make Tom Cruise or Will Smith happy. I must be happy with the movies they’re making.
Anything else is for people who have directly to do with him, not for me as a consumer of his movies.

Although Mira seems a bit out of place, since everyone here seems to be American directors I appreciate her being there. She has an interesting perspective on things and helps broaden the discussion and our perception outside of just the US film industry.
The subject matter of most of her films isn't particularly american but she's been working within the american film industry for about 20 years.
Mel isn't American
Born in America, moved to Australia when he was 12. Been participating in the US movie industry for most his life. I'd qualify that as American. And when I was saying American, I meant these people profit and work within the US film industry, they get nominated for Oscars, they're participants, citizens and well known icons of America cinema. That's what I mean. But In Mel's case, he is an American, both literally because he was born in America, but he also participates and has gained a massive celebrity status from his time in American films.
thePANDEMlC They should have a series of chats. Film makers from all the different continents, then a mash up of them all. THAT would be interesting.

I hope he's reading these damn comments.
HEY GALLOWAY! STOP CUTTING GUESTS OFF WHILE THEY'RE SPEAKING AND LEARN SOME MANNERS!
When Mel and Denzel talk, it’s storytelling at its finest. Especially Mel. They demand the attention, in a good way.

It was great to see both Mel Gibson and Denzel Washington give their thoughts and opinions about filmmaking and cinema in general.
After watching this I have a whole new level of respect for Mr. Denzel Washington.

Right?! The best/worst job was a decent 'career path' discussion...but the trouble as a kid thing... Why?!
I noticed the moderator's proclivity for interrupting was doing a disservice to the program. An opportunity to hear amazing filmmakers speak with and to each other would be so much better served with another "host."
