Mel getting excited about history and Medici and 15th century is making me excited. I love these roundtables and I love seeing these people show their love and passion for filmmaking.
The balance of different experience at the table was perfect. Each person gave important and thoughtful life experience that a young and upcoming director/actor/film maker would appreciate. The importance of other jobs that they had to do BEFORE they got where they are. That failures will happen but to keep moving forward.
Totally agree with you. That guy knows how to use all of his emotions. He can be so intense so soft so anything and really mean it. Most of us are too uninhibited to be all that. He does it with ease.
That's exactly why boring old Hollywood needs Directors like he and the other greats. The only thing coming out of Hollywood is constant bad remakes and Marvel Comics Movies. There seems an incredible lack of imagination for a number of years now. I hope it turns around fast!
Mel is a director who can shoot an Oscar worthy movie without any professional actors. This guy literally can take any material, be that actor or script, and make it great art.
Mel Gibson was a very bless man , a great acting talent, a great human being and about one of the best looking actors of all time. Denzel is angelic , beautiful man.
I got so mad when the host cut off Damien Chazelle and Barry Jenkins' exchange towards the end there - that was such a cool coincidence that he didn't let them explain fully. So frustrating.
Although Mira seems a bit out of place, since everyone here seems to be American directors I appreciate her being there. She has an interesting perspective on things and helps broaden the discussion and our perception outside of just the US film industry.
Born in America, moved to Australia when he was 12. Been participating in the US movie industry for most his life. I'd qualify that as American. And when I was saying American, I meant these people profit and work within the US film industry, they get nominated for Oscars, they're participants, citizens and well known icons of America cinema. That's what I mean. But In Mel's case, he is an American, both literally because he was born in America, but he also participates and has gained a massive celebrity status from his time in American films.
I think he's doing a very good job tbh. Some of these people love the attention and could probably speak very long so his role is to make sure everyone can speak. There are some time constraints. I sure wouldn't do it better myself.
@Jesse Montgomery lol. They should put who ever is a good interviewer. In this case yes I agree the lady is the better interviewer. And get out of here with your sexist 'dick' remark.
I'm amazed by those guys... It's amazing for me, a Brazilian who studied English all by myself, to understand almost 100% of what they are talking about and to be able to drink this knowledge directly from the source... Watching this I feel empowered to do what I need, what I want, and what I have to do. They inspire people to keep going on their business. Thanks @The Hollywood Reporter for sharing this with us!
Being a teenager in Australia the First Mad Max movie by George Miller was already legendary before Mel did the second one. In that it was made with a fairly low budget. The camera work on that was made the film even more legendary . Then when he did Gallipoli he really did an outstanding acting job. He possibly got the feel for making incredible stories with lower ranking stars and beautiful camera work
Neil Kumar These directors (and actors, actresses) do not come together because of him. They come to sit together for an hour, because it's The Hollwood Reporter, promotion for the movie, Oscar campaign time. It has nothing to do with the actual reporter guy. Now if he was a member of HFPA, that would be kinda different. :)
Dr. Dhoom It's different, cause they are not coming for the guy. They are coming for the huge Hollywood newspaper. So it could be anyone sitting there asking the questions. The reporter is not the brand, THR itself is the brand.
When Mel speaks he commands attention. He is incredibly wise and eloquent and I am completely inspired by him. He is one of the very top talents to ever exist. I love you Mel
Sounds like he did get emotional and say some anti-semitic things but who the hell cares. 95% of us have said things that could get us in trouble if we were in the Limelight. The guy's an incredible actor and incredible director. If you dissected every great person out there you'd find flaws and stupid things they've done also. It's called being human

I can't be the only person happy to see Mel Gibson doing well again. I saw Hacksaw Ridge and with Saving Private Ryan being the gold standard for WWII movies, Hacksaw Ridge is a close second. This man knows movies regardless of what he said years ago
I LOVE Denzel for that single statement about making movies (as compared to real life work stuff): "It ain't that big of a deal".... and especially for the reaction it provoked in Oliver Stone, raising his eyebrow @58:10 ! Mel Gibson's reaction, on the other hand, is exactly the opposite.
Its a reflection of his own persecution complex which hes internalized since childhood and shows in many of his movies.. Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, The Passion, Apocalypto, etc. Even the recent one about the washed up junkie tattooist protecting his daughter. Always the fringe dwelling loner facing evil forces, being hunted.

The last 7 minutes or so of this interview are painful to watch. An interesting conversation between Damien and Barry was about to evolve about both their movies and also there was a moment where Oliver Stone was genuinely amazed that Damien's first real script was Whiplash. Both of these conversations were cut short to ask these questions respectively; "What was your best and worst job?" and "What did you get into trouble for as a kid?"
I noticed the moderator's proclivity for interrupting was doing a disservice to the program. An opportunity to hear amazing filmmakers speak with and to each other would be so much better served with another "host." When Favreau hosted a similar roundtable, being a director and writer, he not only asked good questions, he let the guests kind of lead the discussion organically.
Verdad, put him in a cassock, with a broad rimmed hat, a rapier and white stokings. He looks like someone from the 1600s. Puritans or English Civil War movie when?
Being someone who has never really had a “passion” for films, I really appreciate these discussions. I’m impressed by their passion, but more so impressed by the fact that they’re still interested in learning more about it, from their “competitors” no less. Great content.
When pressed to relay certain things from his past Denzel chose to forego and stood his ground ... but the brevity of his words and the matter of fact way he moves from one point to the next is brilliant to see... the most inspiring man at the table that's for damn sure... and then there's Mel😁
I cannot emphasize how absolutely jarring that was. These two had a really interesting coincidence story opening up really nice in front of us and this terrible host just interrupts him at the worst part.
ANSWER MY DUMB QUESTION THAT NO ONE SEEMS INTERESTED IN ANSWERING. I hate that host. And they should have ended the discussion naturally at 1:03:40, but they had to ask another dumb question, which brought the whole thing to a halt.
Mel Gibson is one the best Directors working today and i cant wait to see his passion project about the Medici brothers, that story sounded freakin amazing!!!
Me too. At 1:00:33 He and Damien Chazelle were in the middle of an intersting conversation about seeing eachother's movies and I wish that Damien got to finish his thought and for Barry Jenkins to be able to respond but stupid Galloway had to cut him off and ask about Damien's worst job. This whole roundtable was fantastic but that was the one moment where I really wanted to just punch that man in the face.

Denzel says so much whether he answers or not. The last question he declined and it was as interesting as answering it. The man is pure class. He puts life into it’s proper perspective. Being in his position is a gift that he recognizes. His talent and hard work got him there but still recognizes that he is still very fortunate . If an actor can be a role model it is him!
Gibson, what a profound statement: "When we're kicked into this planet ... we need to hear these things to reaffirm who we are in relation to our planet, our environs and everyone else".
This was amazing and the energy coming out of Mel's body is unbelievable. what was really interesting is their line for not telling about themselves unlike actors.
Man Gibson and Nair really connected here i felt. He was so enthralled whenever she spoke and shared very similar thoughts on movies.
I think it also has to do with her directing him in a movie.

Mel getting excited about history and Medici and 15th century is making me excited. I love these roundtables and I love seeing these people show their love and passion for filmmaking.
I prefer the Viking movie more.
I like that he is giving in this roundtable, open
Mel is a man of renaissance
The balance of different experience at the table was perfect. Each person gave important and thoughtful life experience that a young and upcoming director/actor/film maker would appreciate. The importance of other jobs that they had to do BEFORE they got where they are. That failures will happen but to keep moving forward.
absolutely disagree. There are too many heavy hitters at this table, too many people, period.
Mel just warms my heart. He just oozes charisma, enthusiasm & clearly loves to tell stories.
Totally agree with you. That guy knows how to use all of his emotions. He can be so intense so soft so anything and really mean it. Most of us are too uninhibited to be all that. He does it with ease.
@Random Name but he loves being a hater ,and blowing. Notice how he's the only one bringing up blowing?
That's exactly why boring old Hollywood needs Directors like he and the other greats. The only thing coming out of Hollywood is constant bad remakes and Marvel Comics Movies. There seems an incredible lack of imagination for a number of years now. I hope it turns around fast!
Ooze what?
Does anybody know any info on that movie he is planning to do? I can't find anything. He mentioned young Da Vinci and Venice, the Medici family...

This exactly always happens when Galloway is around
Although Mira seems a bit out of place, since everyone here seems to be American directors I appreciate her being there. She has an interesting perspective on things and helps broaden the discussion and our perception outside of just the US film industry.
The subject matter of most of her films isn't particularly american but she's been working within the american film industry for about 20 years.
Mel isn't American
Born in America, moved to Australia when he was 12. Been participating in the US movie industry for most his life. I'd qualify that as American. And when I was saying American, I meant these people profit and work within the US film industry, they get nominated for Oscars, they're participants, citizens and well known icons of America cinema. That's what I mean. But In Mel's case, he is an American, both literally because he was born in America, but he also participates and has gained a massive celebrity status from his time in American films.
thePANDEMlC They should have a series of chats. Film makers from all the different continents, then a mash up of them all. THAT would be interesting.
Yeah, his Dad is American, Mom is Aussie.
Love the show BUT its so frustrating when the interviewer interrupts their answers/stories with a new question. Let them finish, please!
X2... i dont like him... stupid.
Unfortunately for the otherwise great show, Galloway does this in every single clip this channel has ever posted. EVERY SINGLE ONE.
I think he's doing a very good job tbh. Some of these people love the attention and could probably speak very long so his role is to make sure everyone can speak. There are some time constraints. I sure wouldn't do it better myself.
Ik. He always does that 🙄
@Jesse Montgomery lol. They should put who ever is a good interviewer. In this case yes I agree the lady is the better interviewer. And get out of here with your sexist 'dick' remark.
So interesting to see which directors seem more like artists and which seem more like managers.

HEY GALLOWAY! STOP CUTTING GUESTS OFF WHILE THEY'RE SPEAKING AND LEARN SOME MANNERS!

Chris D dude has a Napoleon complex. So short he has to be in control.
Right?! The best/worst job was a decent 'career path' discussion...but the trouble as a kid thing... Why?!
