    Is that in code ? I thought you needed clearance under the deck or use H4 treated timber?

    Hi Tim, it is a nice video.
    I am planning to DIY decking. I think the size of my bavkyard is about thee same as yours.
    My question is, are you using the same wood for joist and barriers? I was just wondering can we just skip barriers? So from the post i will attach joist then laying the decking straight?
    Thank you

    What timber did you use foe your bearers as they are very close to the ground? Is it H3 or H4?

    • @mcnicolbutler
      @mcnicolbutler  8 років тому

      level 4 can be in contact I believe , 70mm clearance minimum.

  • @gatekeeper88
    @gatekeeper88 9 років тому

    how did you secure the joist onto that concrete?.. looks like threaded rod maybe with chemset?. Am looking at DIY decking and want to make sure I anchor it to the house (brick vaneer) properly.. the forces on the brick won't be much as it'll be properly supported with pylons on level ground. Thanks.

  • @juzzotec
    @juzzotec 8 років тому +1

    What about when it rains and with low clearance.. Where will the water go? Legit question.

    • @mcnicolbutler
      @mcnicolbutler  8 років тому

      you need 70mm of clearance, the water will run to the retaining wall, and drain away. Normally you don't worry about drainage under a deck , but you may install drainage around the deck if needed.

    No idea at all and looks like a lot of stuffing around.
    Try using MPG10 H3 140x45 for joist and bearer.
    Read the framing code as 90x45 is not joist or bearer size.
    Not sure if you are in NSW but that would not pass here.
    Joist flush with top of bearer seen as you don't have much room.
    Dont sink shit 90x90 post into ground and get some galvanized stirrups 75mm above ground for termites to comply.
    Just cut and build frame packed up than level of with the fancy dumpy and dig holes last.
    By the way what's the triple grips for and just get some batten screws.
    Happy to send some picture of frames i have built. www.ptconstructions.com.au

    • @mcnicolbutler
      @mcnicolbutler  8 років тому

      It's all in the timber framing code of Australia, which complies with all states. Smaller joists mean closer bearers. Its about designing it for the area its going in.

    hey thank you for the video. Just wondering, if there is already a concreate tiled ground deck but its now sloping down (no longer even) this is how we bought town house) I want to build a low ground deck like what you have just done. Would I have to get rid of the tile concrete or is there anyway I can do it over it?

    • @mcnicolbutler
      @mcnicolbutler  10 років тому +1

      In some cases we attached battens to the concrete, with either spaghetti and screws or dynabolts . We scribe the bottom to concrete and plain the top once installed.

    Hi Tim, Thanks for the video... Im doing a DIY at home and just have a question... if you have a spam of 4 metres how far should your supports posts be? I have limited space below the deck and am building it over a concrete slab.
    thanx

    • @mcnicolbutler
      @mcnicolbutler  9 років тому

      generally 1.5m but it depends on timber sizes and grade of timber

    • @BillyBrackman
      @BillyBrackman 9 років тому

      thanks TIm. cause of the limited space I'm thinking to just use the joists and skip the bearers. if I have support every 1.5 m for these is it acceptable? what size should the joists be? thx for your help.

    • @mcnicolbutler
      @mcnicolbutler  10 років тому +3

      This deck was 100mm from ground level. If it were over 1 m then a 10mm notch in case bearers broke on bolts. But it isnt required at low heights.

      bartbug1 it’s all about spans with timber. The span is the distance the timber has between supports. Provided your spans meet the codes for the size - the size is irrelevant.

    Amateurs placing a joist along the side of a post.... WRONG. Beams are to rest on fully or on a notched side or notched center of a post. Otherwise you are bearing on a bolt/screw so the post is not involved in the structural equation. Do not follow this instruction, most people do this which seems logical but is no way near right Speak to a Structural engineer, he will set you right, do not follow these 'Pros'.. They may mean well, but were taught improperly.

    • @mcnicolbutler
      @mcnicolbutler  6 років тому +3

      Joseph Böhme when the job is close to the ground - there is no risk of a collapse.
      The timber is treated to be able to touch the ground.
      If you need an engineer to work out your deck - you have no idea.
