The last time I was training DJing, I got bored mixing the outro with the intro. I felt my mix losing energy. I had no idea what to do and followed intuition. First, I picked up a few tracks with the same key and a couple of songs with the key higher by two. It was much better, but not enough. Then, I have tried to mix quicker. I tried to skip the boring intro and bring the most catching parts of the next song right before the breakdowns of the previous. Finally, I came up with mixing about a minute of each song. I was not able to stand still anymore. I was dancing and enjoying the ENERGY. It's so amazing that my intuitive play got supported by this video! Thank you, I will try all the other tips!
3:23 This is all good and well if you're only a DJ, but if you are a musician, like me, these are: 2A - D#m, 1A - G#m, 3A - A#m and 2B - F# Also not the most logical keys to play on guitar. Or piano. In fact, 8 is white keys: 8A - Am & 8B - C. As for typical guitar tuning: 9A - Em & 9B - G. So yeah, I try to remember it all by Camleot - Key Name.
Can you do a breakdown video of Angerfist please *Video title : Angerfist Dj Set From The Top 100 Djs Virtual Festival 2020* Breakdown from 30:00 to 45:00
@@djcarlo That would be awesome, +1. In general, the mixing for harder styles is so different it might warrant its own video. (Though many producers in the scene are kinda bad at mixing)
I really loved how this video went way deeper into the selection element, even implicitly when talking about mixing in key. Also, the breakdown on breakdown harmonic mix is something that becomes very pleasant to do and hear, specially on underground music, where you have pretty long breakdowns and can overlap - using the eq, obviously - synths with the same chord progression.
Correct! The thing is, selection and harmonies are some techniques that don't get enough love in the DJ world for me. Even if harmonic mixing isn't for every genre, it really shines in electronic music.
Also, I came here to say I bought MIK and it was a game changer for me. I consider myself a pretty seasoned DJ, but I never gave too much attention to cue points and their versality. I finally can play 30 and more tracks in one hour using all the good parts. And while it's not hard on techno to read the waveform and guess the energy of the track, when you fail it live it's not good for the crowd. And yesterday I had the privilege to mix my whole library of more than twenty years of techno songs without knowing what is what, just based on energy levels, and it was very pleasant to do so with some sort of guide for that. I remember when our only visual cue (for energy) was how dense and close together the vinyl lines would look. Keep spreading knowledge!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your content. I've been watching your videos since I first started DJing for real a few years ago and I am now blessed to say that I am a full time DJ :)
At 7:13 - Wish more DJs would read the text you've got on screen and get it into their head that pre-prep isn't for cheats, it's for people who want to put in more effort to get great results. DJ'd for years 'on-the-fly', and while that's fine, the results I get now with prep are just on a total different level. It's like ANY creative endeavour - If you want to make something special, you should be prepared to... prepare! I'd add 2 more tips that definitely weren't apparent to me in my early DJ years: 1) Buy tunes in all different keys so you can actually stay in key and go where you want. Non-flashy tunes with a solid basic groove can be just as important to make your set work as bangers. 2) Don't think of 3-deck mixing as harder, it's actually easier! Instead of thinking of it like juggling 3 things, think of the 3rd deck as a way to comfortably get the next track ready without having to find a way to exit the existing mix if it's good! And if you start phasing with 3 decks playing, don't panic, just listen to the new track against the master in your headphones and you'll rapidly be able to tell if it's the new tune that's out (it is 9 times out of 10).
Great extra tips bud! The two you mentioned could definitely be helpful to other DJs out there! And yes, prep is always the key (seriously, who thinks prepping is cheating??). There's nothing wrong with DJing on the fly, but knowing your music can make for better and more intricate sets! Just don't plan *everything* and be averse to ruining your set; keep your core, but be open to taking detours so everyone has a good time!
The most interesting Trick for me, was Trick#2 / Energy Levels. I really want to know more about this topic because it seemes very important to know about.🎹
I have no idea what the whole A B system we got going on is, but my settings are in the traditional major/ minor, and while it isn’t always perfect, i listen to my library a lot, and I know my scales, so I will just adjust the keys of my tracks. It also helps if I can sing the melody on top of the existing song, because if I can, I can probably mix them. And I can usually tell how far away the keys are because the melody sounds feel higher or lower imposed on the track at hand. I then use the headphones to make sure the new track is in the key I envisioned, and it never fails

Yeah I might have to hop on that Mixed in Key! I’ve been hearing so many good things from them! My fav point of the video is about mixing energy levels & having your tracks cue points at each phrase to make fast mixing easier! This was super helpful Carlo, salute 😎✌🏿 🎹
Thanks for watching till the end bud! And yes, I highly recommend 'em. Glad you found the video helpful bud, and don't forget to use my code when getting MIK!
Hi Carlo - at 4:00 you show the typical key progression for your sets (7B, 7A, 8A, 8A, 10A, 10A, 9A, 9A, 8A). But what's going on with the BPMs? How can the key of the song control the energy more than the bpm's? You're not sticking with one bpm for the entire set, are you?
The music itself can dictate the energy it's trying to give. There can be songs at 100BPM with more party "energy" than songs at 128, but were produced to be more chill (future bass vs beach house for example). So the songs give off their own energy, but effects can accentuate that even further.
@@djcarlo thanks, I believe you. So unintuitive at first though. Might be a great topic for you to expound upon in a video, professor. So how are you typically managing bpm’s? Are you adjusting the song tempos to all match the first song? Or are you transitioning to other songs with other bpm’s during your sets?
Ohhhh, I do love this approach. It's actually fairly difficult since you really need to know the lyrics inside out, but the end product is usually stunning. Kudos for doing that!

Glad you stayed till the end of the video bud! And bootlegs are premade mashups/mixes of songs that add elements, fine tune the instrumentals, put in acapellas, etc to a song to make something familiar more energized, easier to mix, more hyped, or just different enough from the original.
great video. Is there a software that beat grids your songs correctly? I have found using serato pro that probably about one in 9/10 tracks have the beat grid in-between the beats and not on the beats however short of going through hundreds of tracks I don't find this out till I am actually trying to mix the track. I know how to edit the beat grid manually and correct this but it is time consuming especially seeing as it is something that the dj software is supposed to be doing. Basically what I am asking is that is there a program that does for beatgridding what mixed in key does for question points and labelling?
The Mixed in Key automatic cue points was really interesting. I had been thinking about getting MiK for their virtual instruments to help with my producing. Will have another look at them 👍👍
I use MiK too and I must say for me it doesn‘t really make sense to put automatically cue points on the track. I label all the cue points, so I give myself hints, what‘s happening at this point. The most important feature on this software is the most correct detection of the key, because the DJ softwares make mistakes sometimes. So this software doesn‘t really help saving a lot of time, if you need a good and complete preparation 😅 (for me)
In all fairness, each DJ has their own preferences on it. I've also shuffled around some of the cue points MIK gave me, but dang, good on your for labelling the cue points! TBH that's hella helpful during sets haha
thanks for your video, great content as always. i’m still perfecting my in-key mixing, i will later on the energy levels..will see how that goes. keep up the good work!
You need to learn how to read the crowd, I think you only get this from djing enough parties or club sets... it's like a sense of knowing what song selection is best and how to manage the crowd's energy levels. The tips I have for club djs is to identify sub-groups in crowds so you can rotate groups of people from the dancefloor to the bar so the club rakes in the cash while you still maintain the dancefloor. If you can prove to club management that you make more money when you dj you'll get a residency. You might have experienced this at a club when the dj drops a track and you're like "eh? I'm not feeling this I'll go get a drink" or when you're at the bar and you're like "damn this is my song, I need to get on the dancefloor". Lastly having a premix of tracks works when you need the toilet lol.
Wow never really realized there was a name for power block mixing even though I tried to do it myself once. You definitely need a good amount of songs if you plan to mix fast but it’s good for them peak moments when the dance floor is crackin!
Not yet, but I'll consider doing one that focuses on power block mixing soon! For prepping, I've covered that in a lot of videos that has to do with cueing.
Glad you took the advice bud! And bootlegs are remixes of popular songs that either spruced up for the clubs, have added intros, have added MC lines, or mash ups of different songs.
I was scrolling just to find a comment like this. I run VDJ as well, and you’re saying I can run MiK10 and it’ll update and play nice with my tracks in VDJ? Rad if true. I love VDJ but i find it’s key detection and analyzation to be pretty sus at times. … the generated cue points would be a nice time saver too.
@@windkatmeow3010 , hey man, I try to learn too :) All I know is that I exported cue points for rekordbox ( software installed ) and when I was trying virtual DJ , I saw all my songs with cue points made by Mixed in key 10. Try yourself ( following the tutorial for rekordbox ) and see if it’s working for you too! Comment below! Good luck !
While the principles are more evident in electronic music, they work as well for Hip Hop and R&B. Imagine blending the bassline of one hip hop track with the vocals of another in key?? It's a live mash up! Hahaha
@DJ Carlo Atendido Hi there and thanks much for this and for all your wonderful videos. Thanks much for your discount code too!!! I want to buy mixed in key 10 today, but first it is very important to ask: I play music with my Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX controller using Serato DJ Lite. I'm an amateur DJ. Will mixed in key 10 work with Serato DJ Lite or it works only with Serato DJ Pro? Thanks much!
You're welcome bud! Really glad you love the videos! Now for MIK and Serato DJ Lite, it should work, but the problem is, I don't think Lite has key detection, so the cue points will be there, but the keys won't. I haven't tried it myself, but that's as far as I know. I recommend upgrading to Serato Pro! One time payment, and you're good!
Can you please show how to use “spiral” on rekordbox.. also.. selecting different audio fx (ddj400) requires changing those only on 1st tab on deck 1.. cant we acceess tab 2,3 or fx on deck 2 through controller? Thanks!

🎹 Good grief, that was a lot of information! Question about DJing live. When I did my first gig, the speakers were pretty far away from me so there was about a 1 second delay between my headphones and the live sound. This was frustrating because for every transition, I had to put on my headphones to made the transitions actually work. Is this normal? 😕
Dang, how far were the speakers? Even in a large club, there shouldn't be a delay in the speakers from your audio output. Something may be wrong with the venue's set up. As a workaround though, yes, I did have to DJ exclusively in my headphones before with venues that had a similar problem. But, that delay is NOT normal!
Yeh thats pretty normal. Club/bar owners dont know or care about setting up a perfect DJ set up. I've played a few bars and even a DJ competition with no monitors in the DJ booth and delays/echos. DJ competition, I couldn't believe it. My set was wrecked, you cant scratch without monitors. I had to do the most basic things and mix all in my headphones
Hoo boy - when the video started and you began talking about mixing in key I thought, hm... this looks like it will be a repeat lesson for me, but then you mentioned Energy Boost Mixing and I'm all pumped about experimenting with that 🎹 - definitly going to try that on my stream tonight 💜 you're advertisment of mixed in key 10 has me almost convinced - especially after the lesson on Energy Level mixing, given the fact that mik10 does that for you. Guess I'll have to try the software out one any day now... wonder how well it will work with Synthwave 🤔 Overall a very insightful video but for me personally moreso since after being introduced to the world of mixing in key by a previous video, I felt like my sets improved so much due to it, and to see the world of keys open up more to me now 🤯
Glad you stayed till the end bud! And dang, tbh, it should work well with Synthwave given the electronic aspect of it. Would definitely wanna hear how that goes!

Dj carloo im still waitin on that advanced scratch tutorial/tipss!
Sure thing! That’s in the line up! Thanks for the reminder!
7:50 +1 for Traktor
Ahhhh yes, from my Traktor days. It's been a while haha

Always analyze! Very important in preparing sets!
Very informative video as always! Keep up the good work!👏👏
Finally made it to the BPM SUPREME and use your code😎✌️
Eyyyy, welcome to the BPMSupreme fam bud!
Thank you so much DJ Carlo for the video - just purchased Mixed In Key 10 using your coupon code. Thank you - DJ PARIS
You're welcome bud! Glad you made use of MIK!
*Nice video Brother !* ❤💚💜💖🔥🔥🍬🍬
Thanks ✌ for the visit!
I like those accapella you used at the beginning, I chopped the same sample on a track I produced years ago. Great minds think alike lol.
Great minds DO think alike yo!
Hi dj carlo great video, would it be possible to do a video on this power block mixing. Keep the great videos coming.👍
Let's see about that! Might be able to do a focus one on it!
@@djcarlo thank you, that would be so helpful.
Dj carlo idol best mentor🔥
I try bud! Haha, glad you learn things from the videos!
great video.
I haven't really seen any bud. Best method is really to beat grid manually!
The Mixed in Key automatic cue points was really interesting. I had been thinking about getting MiK for their virtual instruments to help with my producing. Will have another look at them 👍👍
Check 'em out! Definitely worth it!
🎉 Energy levels
Something all DJs should know!
The energy levels really changed the mix game for me!
Hahaha, that final one is really important! Just make sure you're not up on a stage or anything when you set a premix!
Very informative. 😎
Glad you thought so bud! Hope you learned something from the video, and got ideas!
Wow never really realized there was a name for power block mixing even though I tried to do it myself once. You definitely need a good amount of songs if you plan to mix fast but it’s good for them peak moments when the dance floor is crackin!
It was a fairly new discovery for me too! But man, it works well!
New user for mixed in key here, thanks for the 10% coupon 👍👍
You're welcome bud! Enjoy the software!
Power block is my favorite technique
It's an interesting technique! I didn't know about it as well till I first tried out MIK.
Do you have a tutorial on how you "Power Block mix" and how you prep. your songs?
Not yet, but I'll consider doing one that focuses on power block mixing soon! For prepping, I've covered that in a lot of videos that has to do with cueing.
Thanks for the advice its just great! What do you mean by bootlegs? Mixing really popular songs that are not strictly electronic music into a set? 🤔
Glad you took the advice bud! And bootlegs are remixes of popular songs that either spruced up for the clubs, have added intros, have added MC lines, or mash ups of different songs.
Bro your video was dope...pls how do u get ur songs...am actually very new to dj-ing
Welcome to the world of DJing bud! I get my songs from BPMSupreme.com! You can use my code there too to get a discount when signing up.
@@djcarlo thanks man im grateful ,,
@@djcarlo whats your code...???
Thank you
Thanks for supporting as well bud! Hope you learned something from the video!
Its sounds better when transition is done harmonically ❤️
It does! The harmonies flow into each other!
These captions are always so funny. :)
Hahahaha, glad you take time to check 'em out!
Mixed in key 10 works even with virtual dj
As far I noticed, rekordbox analyzed in 99,9% same as mixed in key 10. But as you showed the cue points are really a bonus 🙂
The cue points are a major plus! They're hella helpful!
Good luck !
Power block mixing seems like something I'd love to be able to do
Give it a shot man! It's fun to play around with!
I'mma SpongeBob fan and DJ Carlo Atendido fan. The intro is damn good

or, my favorite: OH MY GOSH! A FLOATING SHOPPING LIST!
So which version gives you the que points and all ? There are so many add ons?
Go for Mixed in Key 10! That's the one you're looking for.
7:05 name track ? please
Name is right there in the video bud! But it's by DJ Fleek
Great video, these tips seem to be geared towards EDM. Do these tips work the same for other genre's of music such as Hip Hop or R&B?
Absolutely. All music is based on the same principles.
While the principles are more evident in electronic music, they work as well for Hip Hop and R&B. Imagine blending the bassline of one hip hop track with the vocals of another in key?? It's a live mash up! Hahaha
@DJ Carlo Atendido
Hi there and thanks much for this and for all your wonderful videos.
Thanks much for your discount code too!!!
I want to buy mixed in key 10 today, but first it is very important to ask:
I play music with my Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX controller using Serato DJ Lite.
Thanks!
I'll try working that out into a future video bud!
Hey Carlo.
I am ready to place an order on the Mixed in Key web page by choosing the Dj Software Collection pack and by using your discount coupon. What do you think ... are all these additional apps useful or this action might be surplus? Thank you very much in advance for your prompt reply!
Cheers mate, by Greece.
Hey buddy! Just go for what you need! MIK is the Shiz!
@@djcarlo I ordered and installed the Mixed In Key & the Platinum Notes apps. Keep working with us... I am wishing you a wonderful weekend. Thank you a lot !!!
Would you be able to do a video on how to mix tropical house? Songs like Kygo for example. I haven’t seen any UA-camrs do a video on that before.
I'll consider it for a future video bud! It's very similar to house, just that the BPMs are usually lower.
@@djcarlo Ah alright sounds good, thank you so much for the videos; they're amazing.
Hey dj where do you buy all of your dj controllers?
Ohh you can get them from Amazon!
Aight thanks
大師,你是台灣人嗎?看到你的視頻在台灣拍的,好奇問一下。anyway, thx for ur vedio, 看你的視頻學了很多DJ技巧。🙆♂️👍🙏Thx
I'm not, but I'm Filipino, so I'm just an hour and a half away by flight! I miss Taiwan though; you guys have great night markets!
@@djcarlo It was very spread out because I was DJing in front of some dodgeball courts and they had one speaker around each court
I had to do the most basic things and mix all in my headphones
thank you for the information good sir,
I'm glad you do bud! And I'm always happy to share the lessons I've learned :3
Please can you do a Mix on your first controller and mix YOUR style of music
We'll see about the first controller, but I've done a few mixes already in my style music-wise.
@@djcarlo thanks for replying me I love your content 🔥
Pro Dj:
"you should mix in key it sounds harmonic"
Me (playing uptempo most of the time):
"What is harmonic?"
Hahaha, believe me, once you learn about it, you'll never wanna stop!
DJ carlo, how did you get to use the camelot key system in rekordbox?
Check out my video on Best Settings! The information you need is there.
Hey Carlo where does MIK write the Tag infor for energy levels for Rekordbox? Can you customise where it tags it ect?
Ohhhh, that I'm not too sure about. Should be the ID3 tags, but I'll need to go back and check the software.
Hello DJ CARLO ATENDIDO ! Very useful video. But how Can I get a free version of Mixed in Key ?
I don't think there's a free version! Gotta support the devs too! Hahaha, though you can get a discount with my code DJCARLO10
You are a Pro 😅😅
Thanks for that Sindisile! I just try to make sure everyone has a good time with the mixes hahaha
Sir pa review ng pioneer we go3. Thank you and more blessings to come..

Sure!!! I'm from Taiwan~~
