I will be bringing my whippet puppy home from the breeder next week. Your videos are one of the main reasons why I chose this breed for the very first time. Like you in the past, I've only ever had large and furry dogs. When I first met my puppy I was captivated by her sparkling personality and sweetness even though she was only 6 weeks old. Every time I have visited her since then I have found more reasons to fall in love. She is cheerfulness on 4 feet, but she is also smart, curious, and delightfully cuddly. Thanks for helping me choose the unique and beautiful whippet as my new companion for life.
My wife and I had a whippet boy many years ago; a tall fellow with a white coat and splashes of pumpkin. One evening we came home together, and as we left the car he noticed the fireflies alight over the lawn. He sat and . . . just watched. It was clear to me that he was appreciating the show. I have never known a more intelligent dog.
My family had a whippet who liked to lie on the couch and watch TV. She really got into the events on screen, even reacting to dramatic moments. Another tried to tell her sister to get off grandfather's lazy chair, as he'd said sometime before that nobody else can sit there. I've seen one of ours try to open a round door knob with his paws, but of course he couldn't get a grip. Whippets are shockingly intelligent.
We met our first whippets at a pet expo probably 10+ years ago. We had 2 dogs already at the time but were always thinking about what our future dogs would be (we don't like to rush into important puppy decisions! :) . We'd always thought they were scared, shaking, timid little creatures. But, meeting a mother and her litter of pups, they couldn't have been more friendly and forward. We started researching and they hit the list of 'potentials'. Fast forward 10 or so years and we lost our two old girls in 2022. We met a fellow whippet fancier and her dog and got to chatting - her prestigious breeder was only 30 mins from our home. We went to meet her, she liked us enough to offer up a puppy to us and we left to think it over. We got to the bottom of her driveway and called her to say 'yes please!'. He's now about 14 months old and such a wonderful dog. His brother came along 4 months later (and is about to turn 1). You're not supposed to do 2 puppies but they are so bonded and honestly, we've not found any negatives for us (but they're well bred and sensible boys, none of the horror stories you hear). We are still friends with our breeder and visit regularly (and get to cuddle puppies as they come along!). Honestly, it's so hard not to take more home and have a bunch like you do Addie - but we know our limits. Wishing you comfort for your loss and hope your bunch will help you get over the hard times as you adjust X X
I've got a dog that's part whippet. She's so graceful and gentle. Goes everywhere like my shadow. Demands cuddles & scratches from anyone around. Extremely opinionated. Her face! And omd, what a speed demon. Good thing she loves her bed, too.
Hi Adriana, This is the second video I have watched and they have excellent content for anyone thinking of getting a Whippet. Firstly I am so sorry for your loss I truly feel your pain, we had 2 Jrts Nipper who's looks and temperament were so similar to a Whippet, we sadly lost him 2 and half years ago and most recently Ruby we lost 2 months ago. I think we will soon be ready to begin our journey again to love another precious four legged friend, it will be a boy and his name will be Alfie 🐾💖
I can’t add a thing to this wonderful video. I am owned by two Whippets. George just turned 1 year old, Harrison is 5 months. They are such regal animals. It’s really hard to describe all the wonderful traits they possess. I’m so glad that I discovered this breed; they are beautiful, graceful, and always make me smile.
Hello Addy, I felt the same way. I thought whippets were ugly. I was always for the bulldog type. I still like those too. Then I happened to see a video of the American Whippet Spitfire. This fascinated me and I started to find out more about the Whippet. I became more and more enthusiastic about the Whippet. Especially his personality and I hope to own a Whippet someday. I want to visit a show in April and I'm going to drag my husband along with me 😀 I still have to convince him. I think your videos are great because I learn more and more.
A show is a great place to meet whippets in person. Drag your husband there no matter what and he'll thank you for it later 😆 All men who weren't excited for a whippet at first end up being the best spoiling servants once they get to own one of them 🙈
Hello Addy, I have been a breeder of GSD, but one day me and my wife seen a whippet running on the beach and that was it, got to have one, so we did go down the rabbit hole
That's a massive difference in breed type..a GSD to a Whippet- Ironically my Dad used to say ''Why have a dog like a Whippet when they can't protect you?'' Addy had an old and frightening CCTV of her Whippets where burglars broke in - Thankfully the Whippets and the Family weren't hurt, but the Whippets were just standing around looking at the strange men!
That's a big jump from GSDs to whippets, but as someone who had a Golden and a Newf, it doesn't surprise me at all 🙈 And what Oakleaf700 said is true, but I think what kept my whippets safe at the time was they didn't try to intervene with what the burglars were doing and I'll be forever grateful they weren't harmed.
@@ShowPaws Exactly.... They were standing around {the Whippets} and the thieves were completely ignoring them. I'm glad your home security has been strengthened since then..it was a frightening video. My friend's Whippet barks like a fierce maniac but mine is silent when the door gets knocked.
I love our whippet named Astrid. I've had many different dogs through my life but Astrid is the one that shows love and affection in a very special way.
Lovely video, Adriana. It's truly a love story to Whippets. Everything rings completely true! You're so right about needing a sense of humour! I'm so sorry for your loss, and I hope Eris and the rest of your crew can bring you some comfort.
Hi Addy, good to see you back and smiling :) I always wanted a whippet, I had researched which dog would best suit my lifestyle and yes the whippet was it. Why do I love my whippet so much? I often ask this as in reality I am his unpaid slave, putting blanket on him as soon as he stops moving and all the other demands the whippet has, this includes getting out of his chair if I dare sit in it lol. You could liken it to Stockholm syndrome I jest obviously, whippets are gentle, easy going, his independence and personality are great he is not just a ball chaser. I like that they won't do stuff just to please the hooman, they are clean, easy maintenance, super with other dogs and when you see them run at full speed it's a joy to watch. Just a few reasons why whippets are the best dog for me.
I have always thought sighthounds have a distinctly feline quality.....they are not clingy. Their movement is LOVELY. They are refined in looks AND temperament from what you say. They are also not barky, usually.
I spent 1 1/2 years with a Podenco mix. When I hear it, there seems to be a Whippet in there too, the facial expressions are similar. You can see him, Cooper, on my channel under the shorts and pictures under Community. He was rescued from a killing center in Spain and previously lived on the streets for 2 years. The owners weren't able to let him run without a loan, he did whatever he wanted. When I saw him for the first time, I didn't know any greyhounds either, I thought the same as you, but after a short time he was the best dog in the world for me. Within a month I was able to let him run without a leash, and after about half a year he no longer hunted or if he did he was immediately available to me. Now that he hears so well, the owners don't need me anymore and I miss him. (Google translation)
I know how it goes I lost the one in my picture (a Rat Terrier I found on the street) right before Christmas, still can't hold it together. I had 3 Italian Greyhounds before and with him, which by what you describe are very similar to Whippets except more yappy. I've been thinking about owning a Whippet since my last Iggy past in 2020. I like the idea that they are not as fragile as an IG, but still as cuddly. Your channel has helped me a great deal with this decision, so thank you for that. RIP my Gus and yours too!
Hi Addy, glad to see you are doing a little better. I missed your great videos! This one describes my sentiments exactly. Never knew a whippet before my son got my granddog, Seven. They are fantastic in every way. A little stubborn at times but aren't we all😂.
❤️❤️❤️ Their stubbornness is a part of their charm. Nothing compares to a whippet's annoyed "do it yourself face" combined with their big eyes we can't say no to 😂
I feel you and my heart goes out to you. My stomach feels like it’s choking me and I can’t breathe. Just from that first 10 seconds. This is me trying to figure out how to move on enough to get a new brother for my current. It I agree. They’re so funny looking. And their sass doesn’t make them prettier LOL the moment I googled laziest apartment dog I fell in love. What little weirdos. I hope you’re doing alright.
Thank you for this, Addie, you describe Cha Cha and Blue to a ‘t.’ I agree on all points even when Ch Cha chews on my few houseplants because she needs greens (she gets a lot from grass outside on walks!😏) I hope you’re doing better. We’re looking at being owned by a third whippet soon, younger than the other two but he is actually their uncle, their dad’s half brother.❤ Have a good week Addie!☺️👍🏻🤗
@ShowPaws. My 7mo whippet boy hurt himself playing in the back yard and now my vet says he isn't allowed to run/jump for 2 weeks. It's day 2 and he is driving me crazy. What indoor activities do you suggest I try to burn some of his energy ⚡? HELP!
I have two whips, fell in love with a friend’s whips 20yrs ago, finally got my own 7yrs ago. One thing though, is that my hands get really dry since I’m often cuddling and patting them. They are so clean that their coats extract the oils right out of my skin… Is it just me? Couldn’t agree more with your whole vid, especially the reference to being whippet slaves! Lol
Thank you for your videos. We need your help. We had a retired racing greyhound for 10+ years who passed from cancer. She was a perfect dog for us and we were heart sick for 3 years. I've found have a possible female whippet, owned by a responsible breeder who will be 9 in the fall. What do you think her activity level would be,? how long do whippet live healthily? Will it be possible for her to bond to us? We are looking for a lower energy dog we can spoil and take on walks etc. We've not met her yet. Does this sound like disaster? Any wisdom would be most appreciated as how to make this a success.
I would guess she's is way more laid back than a youngster. At this age, they mostly prefer peace, quiet and comfort. Longevity depends on genetics, lifestyle and many other factors, but in most cases they live way past 13, while 15-18 is not uncommon either, especially when they are responsibly and ethically bred. I'd say, meet her and if it's a match, go for it. At this age, parting with her current owner won't be easy, but getting to love you in no time is more than likely.
@@ShowPaws thank you!! Hopefully she will not need to run as there is not safe place but do understand leaving her current family will be very hard for her. It took the greyhound a long time to warm up.
@@ShowPaws We adopted her May 5th and thankfully, it's working out. We need to get some help with her training (she's training us) but she's a love and thank you so much for your encouragement.
I used to think Whippets were weedy little skinny things! But someone advised that I get one...and they are just superb. Whippets are like cats. Quiet, clean and ok, they hunt like mad -but they can be trained out of this.
It's crazy how they've changed from "skinny uglies" to the beautiful companions we can't live without. Btw I also don't call them dogs when I refer to them at home or to other people 🙈
