    Almost nothing you recanted applied to my full blooded whippet aside from separation anxiety. My Cyril was a dream…he would wait patiently on the floor until he got permission to jump up on the bed. He would neatly fit into whatever space allotted to him. While I did buy premium food for him, he ate what I gave him which was whatever I was eating….his stomach was not at all sensitive. The vet bills were only for routine shots. My orientation having gotten him as a puppy from a noteworthy breeder was to have him fit into the household rather than the reverse. He was off leash outside from 6 months of age without one single incident. Good luck with your Whippet…he bears little resemblance to our’s. I write this so those considering a Whippet get another experience told.

    I've always put my girl in a crate when I'm not home and she also sleeps in a crate at night, it took some time for the day crate she's very good about going into her crate at night...I have 2 crates one in the kitchen for when I need to leave her during the day and one in my bedroom for sleeping at night , that works really well as she knows the difference between the purpose of the two. And when I get home leaving her in the day crate I act super excited so she knows I always come back...she's much better no separation anxiety.

      Our leaf also stays in a crate when we leave throughout the day. He also sometimes goes into it by himself to sleep in the day, but he doesn’t like us closing it and leaving.

    We had a greyhound for 8 years until she recently passed. I have considered possibly getting a whippet as they seem extremely similar in personality to a greyhound. Are whippets generally a bit more hyper in their personality?

      I’m so sorry for your loss!
      Whippets and greyhounds are really very similar. Ive also heard that whippets are a bit more energetic, but it’s hard to tell for me. Our whippet is still very young, so he’s extremely playful and nervous around other dogs. At home, however, he sleeps all day. The many greyhounds in our area are all over 10 years old already, so they are naturally a lot calmer because of their age. Some of them still act a bit playful around our whippet though.
      I’m sorry I can’t give you a definitive answer on this one. In the end it also depends on the dog’s personality. Our whippet is generally more shy and reserved.

      Very similar to greyhounds in character, and I wouldn't really say any more energetic - my Matty is certainly not hyper. Get yourself a whippet, you won't regret it!

      @@Whippetinthewoods thanks for the advise. Being a senior, I was concerned about having a dog that might be a bit too high energy for me. Good to hear that your sweetie is chill😀

    Had an adult rescue whippet briefly back in 1980’s…(yep, I’m old)…loved him, he was so calm…NOW…that in my distant memory I recently got a baby girl whippet-(now 5mos old)…and she’s a handful for sure!! Smart, (too smart & stubborn 😂), precious but she has ALL those same darling annoying habits😂!! When she’s focused on something she goes deaf to commands, potty calls-A LOT- we had bad stomach issues and freq vet visits early on. We’re much better, but she still potty’s a lot compared to any dog I’ve ever had. She came into my house and we have x2 cats-so there’s multiple times a day she does her sight hound thing, but she’s getting better with this…patience is required. She’s so full of love that it has been worth all of the above…❤

    Thanks for giving me these "don'ts".... I just adopted a Whippet. He is 7 years old and his previous owner died. So yes I noticed he is clingy. Loves to give kisses. He is extremely affectionate. I was wondering why he ever smiled. He is a good bedmate, often sneaking into bed after I'm in bed and when the lights go out. He is a very gentle soul. I just love him. I have only had him 3 weeks, but I am really working on having him be able to stay home alone. Oh, I forgot to mention, he growls like yours does, whenever anyone passes my door, he growls and might even let a bark out. However it appears that if he can see the person, he might even back away. Whippet.... great little fellow to have.

    How to leave them off leash? Escapes or goes hunting?

    • @miajulio1702
      @miajulio1702  8 місяців тому

      We only feel comfortable leaving him off leash in a fenced in area, or when we are both with him and have balls and treats to lure him back 😅 he definitely chases after small gain and doesn’t listen when we call him back

      Our whippet is very anxious inside and outside of the crate. We would like to start weaning her from the crate, but I think the separation anxiety is too much.
