I have yet to climb at Tremadog but I hear it's good, being Midlands based everywhere is more than an hour away, but subsequently we have the luxury of going where the weather is best. Shrewsbury/Shropshire, Wye valley, Bristol, Trevor and the South peaks are all 1-1.5hrs away. Proper Snowdonia and the Lake District is 3 hours.

Heaps of different ways to get down of mountains and most of the time you don't need to leave kit behind. You'd need to set up a retrievable abseil - we should do a vid showing this but there are plenty on youtube. If it's a popular climbing area there will often be a fixed anchor or gear in place to allow you to do this.
Things have changed quite a bit since I began climbing in the 70s. Even now, I generally only abseil when I have to..and then I find a solid trustworthy (I hope!) sling anchor (e.g. sling threaded through hole in rock, or over a secure flake), thread the rope through this till you reach the middle of the rope, tie the ends together, then cast the rope down where you wish to abseil, then abseil down using belay device or Fig of 8 (smoothly, no jumping about commando-style!) then pull the rope through when reaching the stance or ground (obviously you have to sacrifice a sling).

Is it possible to do this in reverse, like if you dropped into a canyon and wanted to go up the same way?

For the anchor, why did you decide to use overhands instead of alpine butterflies? (Not a criticism by the way, a general query)
Alpine butterflies would work fine. For me they take a tiny bit longer to tie and I just find it quicker to fire in an overhand knot. Boom done.
