Good point. Al worked everyday and always made sure Bud, Kelly and Peg had money. Notice Kelly always dressed nice and Bud wore silk shirts and Dr Martins.
The idea for the show came about because family sitcoms always had happy families. Happy families are real but there are many families that come from other situations. The show was actually called the Anti Cosby Show while it was in development. The setup is that Al and Peg were the popular kids in school. Al was a football player and often reminisces about the game where he made four touchdowns. She gets pregnant, they get married, and they discover that life in the real world is not high school. The Thing that makes this show work is that no matter how much they fight with each other, they do love each other and stick together against outside forces.
Yes, they were trying to make a show about how families really are… crude and dysfunctional. It shocked alot of people when it first came out because they weren’t use to seeing that kind of sitcom about a family
The show was originally written based off of the standup of Roseanne Barr and Sam Kinison. They were even offered the roles of Peg and Al but thankfully turned them down. It may have been a good show with them but this version was great.
You missed the best part of the scene where Al turned down the hot blonde then went home. Peg is waiting for him back home and before she can give him the what for he pulls a blonde wig out of a bag says, "Put this on!" lifts her up and runs up the stairs with her LMAO
I'm 70 y/o & enjoying your discussions about shows I grew up watching. Have you ever considered having another co-host like myself who can add context from that time period & any fallout, or change in cultural, from then to now?
All your mothers hated this show? Well they sound like they need a sense of humor. I grew up on this show. It was funny then and it's still funny. And AL is the best part of the show!
I remember seeing an interview with Kathey Sagal where she answers the question, "Why does Peggy always asks Al for sex?" She said it's because Al is really, REALLY good at it.
Most people don’t know what the word means. He is bigoted and so are all people to a greater or lesser degree or have been at some point in their history.
@@EdmontonRealEstate01 gross generalization! A point some younger people throw out there but cannot back up with facts. Why let facts get in the way of a comfortable narrative!
Ed O'Neil got his start before show biz as a professional football player and was on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster back in the 70s for a season and a half.
These early season clips reminded me of how much more grounded MWC was in it's early seasons compared the later ones, when it got more silly and outrageous. These early season clips are very funny in their own way.
I will continue with my campaign for a Little Rascals reaction. The original black and whites not the bogus remade version. Fly My Kite, The Pooch or Pay as You Exit is a good start. Fish Hooky is an interesting one as it contains four generations of the Rascals.
As some of us look down at Married With Children and The Simpsons, remember that these two shows were the primary cash flow series for Fox TV at its startup, and they made things like Fox News, Hannity, Carlson, and so forth possible. MWC was on for over 10 years.
That show is dearly missed. I was watching it from when it started, until the series finale. He definitely was not like Archie Bunker in my opinion, Al had black friends, never made any racist jokes. A black man was co creator of MWC .
Most of the scenes you watched are from the first season. I usually never like the first season of even my favorite shows. This show got much better as it went along, and didn't focus so much on Al berating Peggy...they got into a lot of other silly things that made it funnier. Like a Labor Day weekend season opener, they were leaving town for the holiday weekend but get stuck on the freeway for the entire episode!
Slightly bigoted? God I hate the way people are now. You can't just take jokes as jokes, it has to be "slightly bigoted." This show is the Anti-Sitcom. Every sitcom of the 80s-90s era were the perfect family, so they took that and flipped it on it's head. That's why it was so genius, along with the amazing acting of Ed O'Neil and Katey Sagal. It doesn't hurt that they had Christina Applegate in there as well, who played the perfect beautiful dumb bimbo character.
3:20 they left out the best part lol he goes and buys a blonde wig and tells Peg to put it on and get in bed haha Edit: actually every part they showed they left out the best part.
When Fox was new, it was extremely difficult to break through over the established Big 3 of ABC, CBS and NBC. It was pre-cable, so it was difficult even getting on the air in some markets. So they had to be edgy to even get noticed. The protests against this show was one of the best things that ever happened to them.
Ed O' Neill (Al) & Amanda Bearse ( Marcy) behind the scenes did not get along later on in the seasons of the show. The 80s were great.. It was a time where you can say what you wanted & not worry or care if it was offensive. No cancel culture..People tried to get this show canceled & failed big time
Funny enough the actor who played Al Bundy, Ed O'Neill, mentioned how one of the reasons that he got the part was because most of the people going for the role were basically treating the character as if it was Archie Bunker whereas he did something different.
I saw that interview and he said he saw the character of AL as his uncle who had just "resigned in life". The guy who thought of him for the role saw him in a performance of Mice and Men

Married with children is a show that validates the broken American family. I have more respect for the Bunkers Show. When this show came out about the Bundies? Just showed our decline. Nuff said. And the reaction to the bimbos / Your faces says it all.
He is not racist. He was cast into a series of misteps . He went from football star in high school. To having to settle due to family obligations. Al represents the every man. Feeling unappreciated, and trodden on. His jokes are because all the women he insults tread on the things he tries to do. They are feminazi man haters. Yet claim feminism which means equal not better than or dominating men. the producers were trying to show both sides. And in the process show how people can vent differences yet not try to censor each other. The ability "to agree, to disagree". Something lacking today and also contributing to the rise in violence.
Thank you for showing more than just the best insults montage going around. This shows the context of the whole show. It’s working title was “Not the Cosbys” because the Cosby Show was the icon of family sitcoms until that point. You had Family Ties and even Silver Spoons which was written by the creators of this show. This had been a cartoonish breakaway.
The characters , and the basis of the show changes after the first season .....in the first season , for example , Peg actually cooked .... In the second season on .....Peg didn't know what a microwave was , how to operate the oven , and never a thing in the fridge .
