The idea for the show came about because family sitcoms always had happy families. Happy families are real but there are many families that come from other situations. The show was actually called the Anti Cosby Show while it was in development. The setup is that Al and Peg were the popular kids in school. Al was a football player and often reminisces about the game where he made four touchdowns. She gets pregnant, they get married, and they discover that life in the real world is not high school. The Thing that makes this show work is that no matter how much they fight with each other, they do love each other and stick together against outside forces.

Yes, they were trying to make a show about how families really are… crude and dysfunctional. It shocked alot of people when it first came out because they weren’t use to seeing that kind of sitcom about a family

The show was originally written based off of the standup of Roseanne Barr and Sam Kinison. They were even offered the roles of Peg and Al but thankfully turned them down. It may have been a good show with them but this version was great.

This show got much better as it went along, and didn't focus so much on Al berating Peggy...they got into a lot of other silly things that made it funnier. Slightly bigoted? God I hate the way people are now. You can't just take jokes as jokes, it has to be "slightly bigoted." This show is the Anti-Sitcom. Every sitcom of the 80s-90s era were the perfect family, so they took that and flipped it on it's head. That's why it was so genius, along with the amazing acting of Ed O'Neil and Katey Sagal. It doesn't hurt that they had Christina Applegate in there as well, who played the perfect beautiful dumb bimbo character.

When Fox was new, it was extremely difficult to break through over the established Big 3 of ABC, CBS and NBC. It was pre-cable, so it was difficult even getting on the air in some markets. So they had to be edgy to even get noticed. The protests against this show was one of the best things that ever happened to them.

He is not racist. He was cast into a series of misteps . He went from football star in high school. To having to settle due to family obligations. Al represents the every man. Feeling unappreciated, and trodden on. His jokes are because all the women he insults tread on the things he tries to do. They are feminazi man haters. Yet claim feminism which means equal not better than or dominating men. the producers were trying to show both sides. And in the process show how people can vent differences yet not try to censor each other. The ability "to agree, to disagree". Something lacking today and also contributing to the rise in violence.

SHe was also Leela in Futurama a cartoon show that was on Comedy Central, she was also on 8 Simple Rules that got cancelled when John Ritter died. After that she did Sons of Anarchy and she is currently on The Conners as Dan's love interest. When they brought back Roseanne and she went off the deep end they renamed it The Conners and brought in Katey to replace Roseanne. Fun Fact Ed O'Neill was really a football player for Youngstown College and then went to the training camp of the Pittsburgh Steelers with Mean Joe Green and LC Greenwood when Chuck Noll was the coach.

Also their group called “No Ma’am” they had plenty of black friends. Not sure where you’re getting bigoted. Maybe you need to look the word up. Ed O’Neil is from small town in Ohio and vet humble guy . I’m sure he made sure they would not write anything like that for him.
Even in the Jeffersons after many seasons George became real good friends with the character Tom and told them no more hunky jokes .
Al Bundy was not a bigot. Archie Bunker… yes. Al… no!

I think the lady totally misses the point. Al Bundy is a miserable man, he hates his job, all the neighbors are making fun of him, he is poor beyond belief. Peggy is unsatisfied and bored that is why she is spending so much money. This show is a comedic take on everything that can go wrong in life and how they are still sticking together.

Lol so many men related. He thought in hs he would ho on to play football, was a really good athlete, but then knocked peg up and his dreams were shattered. Now he lives a miserable min wage existence. The exact opposite of his dreams. Even still, he does what he's supposed to do and provides for the family lol

Believe it or not, the original choice for Al and Peg were Sam Kinison and Rosanne. The latter the world can do without. Also, Ed O'Neill has been a martial artist, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, for over twenty-five years.
