Their last two at least were incredibly strong... I'm glad that among many solid albums from older and newer bands every 3-4 months there's one that completely knocks me out of my boots. Dare I say it might even their best one yet? Why decide between these last three or four and the first three or four? A progressive Black Metal treasure chest!
Pete! thanks for the review although Ive owned it since the day it came out, I'm loving it more at every listen...it will be on my top albums of the year for sure!
True North was my first Borknagar album and it made my top 10 for that year. I feel this is also going to be sitting in that range as the year wraps up.
I was really looking forward to this one, as the two previous albums (and pretty much all of Borknagar’s discography) were absolutely stellar. „Fall“ has been growing on me with every time I listen to it and while I don‘t think that it‘s exactly on par with „True North“ or „Winter Thrice“, it‘s still an amazing album. In my Top 3 for 2024 so far.
I'm going to add my voice to the chorus of comments and confirm that this album is great. It's certainly one of Borknagar's best. ICS Vortex is one of my favorite singers in all of metal.
I just started getting into this band after my shuffle gave me the Ranking the Albums you did with Nick Franco...I love Winter Thrice! What do you think about a panel discussing the history and merits of dirty vocals? Since I'm not a huge fan of them, I'd love to get context from those who are
the more I listen to borknagar the harder time I am having putting them below opeth Enslaved still number one for prog metal but man as much as I love opeth these guys are so great
ICS took over harsh vocals after Vintersorg left. He also did all harsh/clean after Garm left following The Olden Domain up until Vintersorg joined the band. He also did all the harsh/clean vocals on the Arcturus- Arcturian album. Not to sound like a “know-it-all”, just thought you might be interested
Lars and ICS Vortex are a great vocal tandem. I’ve only had a chance to listen thru twice but already feel it is as strong as True North. I could almost go 5 stars with this as well.
Last 2 albums are really great. I'm not sure theur mid period is close to Enslaved at the same time, but they are so good now - with Vortex and nedland (and actually no vintersong i think helps) Noting Vortex does do the harsh vocals now (review says he doesn't). Nedland does some of the clean ones. This album is closer to enslaved than the last one musically - less celtic in sound In comparison of the 2 - for me Bjornsson is a better musician visionary and guitar player than Brun. More depth ultimately. Ice Dale is the best lead guitarist borknagar have the big plus in clean vocals and keyboards- and the ability to sound accessible.
On my channel you'll find an AI generated progressive metal song. I am a programmer who have no clue about music really, other than that I love Dimmu Borgir. Although it's not black metal It would be interesting to know from an enthusiast\professional how my AI song stacks up to "real" music of the progressive metal genre. Oh, and keep up the great work! That's a mighty impressive collection you got there.

What an amazing album and discography this band has!
Amazing album and band!
Great review Pete of a fantastic album Correct Enslaved and Borknagar have never made a bad album.

Killer record. Another one I will certainly include on my list of albums of the year!

Just a brilliant band, and their last 2 albums are so enthralling. Curious to hear your thoughts.
I would add Winter Thrice to that and say 3 straight
Thank you, Pete, for your review.
All the damn time.
I will give this band a listen.

Life is better with music.
Lars Nedland and Vortex share the clean vocals, it is not only Vortex! :-)

Early contender for album of the year.

I agree enslaved and borknagar awesome

I think ics vortex does both the clean singing and the harsh vocals
Strange, he's never done harsh vocals before to the best of my knowledge.
@@seaoftranquilityprog i'm pretty sure he did the harsh vocals on true north too!

Fall is probably a shoo-in for my top 12 of the 2024 no matter what else comes. This one and Quintessence are probably my favorites in the catalog.

Give it five
