Phily Bowden is an elite runner and marathoner who recently ran a superb gun time of 2:34:30 at Seville Marathon in Spain. After our conversation on the JOG ON podcast (link below), I agreed to take Phily to her very first parkrun. We chose Reading parkrun, held at Thames Valley Park.
Thank you to Reading parkrun and Phily, if you like what we create, check out some of our other videos and you can always find more out about JOG ON at: www.thisisjogon.com

Wonderful idea to do a light run beforehand. I walk to the run in Buckingham and suffer the whole way around for 38mins! I'm definitely giving this a go on Saturday.
I loved you ran with her. Great video!
Oo💛ps, I almost forgot this 🤔 and this
Hi from ‘dog lady’, thanks for getting some footage of my last parkrun with Flash aka ‘dog with flapping tongue’
Love that you saw it Mhairi - I saw the news about parkrun and dogs - no doubt this will be a huge blow to many.
I wish you all the best with your running and thank you for watching
@@thisisjogon it was great to get some footage from our last parkrun. We regularly compete in canicross races and used parkrun as a time trial during training
A dog running 3 miles dragging someone is not good for most breeds especially if over 5 years old... i do not know running but i know dogs.
@@anyexpat It's the dogs own choice to drag it's owner around 5km. Dogs do eventually die like all other living things.
@@anyexpat I've heard this from others, with as little to back it up as you give. What are "most breeds"? Pretty much all sporting dogs, working dogs and hounds are literally bred to be active and runners. One of the biggest health and behavioural issues they have is not ENOUGH running. Even terriers can easily work up to 5k, again probably not getting enough exercise in general. Only toy dogs are obviously unsuitable, but I doubt anyone tries running a 5km with a chihuahua.
Do you really think all the health advice around exercise that is true for humans suddenly is not true for dogs? Even though most breeds have been bred specifically for their exercise capabilities?
I think the only real question is how a fat unhealthy dog can be safely built up to doing a norm easy distance like a 5km. Any healthy dog should be able to do a 5km (and I include toys here - they are not healthy dogs, and are riddled with genetics and physiological issues that contribute to them being unsuitable for running)
She really is elite. And I guess the real insight is her positive attitude and happy nature. I'm not trying to be dismissive of her determination and skill. But it strikes me that it just makes it easier if you can hold onto that kind of spirit while you run. That's what struck me.
Really great insight, and probably one of the most observant comments made on this video so far.
I agree, I think attitude is undervalued. Thank you for watching

Diving in to the youtube rabbit-hole at 3 am to find channels like this is what I love doing. You're an excellent filmmaker and storyteller.
I love that, thanks for visiting this rabbit hole

Got to be the best running content on UA-cam! Love watching here from Australia 🇦🇺 Watching your videos always makes me miss the U.K. running scene!
Love it Ryan, say hello to Australia from me.
It’s the running weather you likely don’t miss however…
Have a great one and all the best with your training.

These videos are better than a lot of the stuff on Netflix! Fantastic video! I was really anticipating how the run would go alongside Phily and in those conditions.Kudos to the young fella in the raincoat, I'd be well overheated in that! PS. Great tip about the warm up run. The two Parkrun PBs I've run in the last two weeks (22.00 then 21.19) have come after a slow pace warm up of 2km and I'm sure it's no coincidence.
Thank you Tom, yes the warm up is well worth consideration as it can have a profound effect on a race effort. No idea how someone runs that in a raincoat.
Cheers for watching and supporting my work.
All the best,
Harry
You deserve a gb vest Harry for getting her down to a parkrun I reckon, hope she’s caught the buzz! JOG ON 👊🏻

Great video & run Harry💪 Well done for getting Phily to her first Parkrun

@@thisisjogon it’s about time…your videos are honestly NEXT LEVEL!! 🚀
Great video, good point re. Longer warmup all my best 5Ks have been when I've run about 3 miles to get there
It’s interesting, and something few really utilise for fear of wearing themselves out
Late to the party but will never forget the weather on that second lap!
It was crazy Will, thanks for watching and welcome to the party 🎉 🎈
I've ran/cycled with people before where I was dying and they weren't even breathing it's easily one of the most frustrating things. I've told them to at least pretend to suffer lol
I know this experience well
Thanks for watching!
Amazing channel .
Amazing comment .
Just watched Becky from the Philly/Becky 100km challenge team hammer the ass off a sub 2.30 at Manchester marathon. Incredible stuff.
I know, an amazing time and effort wasn’t it
19:45 - “unproductive”!!! 😂😂😂
You have got to be kidding me!!!
When I did my fastest ever at 21:09 I thought on finishing I was actually dying!!! 😂😂😂
I think we’ll be giving that ParkRun a miss. Boggy fields, narrow paths with walkers so struggling to get through and muddy!!! Not for this 48 yr old that’s normally bambi on ice on the mud!!! 😂😂😂
Great video. 👍👍👍
Tell me about it, what a message to get after.
Thanks very much for watching a JOG ON video it’s appreciated!
6:39 oh no way that's me!
Excellent Chris, I hope you had a great run that day
Excellent Chris, I hope you had a great run that day
Can't wait to see philly go all out at a parkrun
She’d fly no doubt. Thank you for watching and commenting Melanie
nice to pace with someone, my running partner ditches me in the first mile. lol All good though as I plan to surprise her next race season. I am in Florida so I take May through Oct off of doing races, but still train on the treadmill.
Would love to be back in Florida to run - hope all goes well
Re: Warmups, my parkrun is 4.5k, away. I definitely do better if I cycle that rather than run all of that :)
Very interesting, you do see people cycle to parkrun and back, a great morning of varied fitness
Such a cool video
Cheers
What a tough cross-country parkrun!
Could be worse, a fun course. Thank you for watching
I need a Philly on my parkrun!
I think we all do! It's very motivating to have someone so excellent running beside you
Can you please tell me more about a longer run before parkrun? How long etc what pace
Absolutely up to you Tony - but if you’re fit, it’s not unreasonable to run a steady 2km before starting the parkrun itself
Really enjoyed this, it's like the running channel used to be. How about a collaboration with Edd Budd?
Appreciate that Matt, interesting to know did the Running Channel change quite a bit?
Aware of Edd, shoe review guy I believe...
Thank you for watching Matt it's greatly appreciated.
Harry
@@thisisjogon When running channel first started out it was a little more about personal experience and felt like you were along for the run with them. Over time it's changed a bit, still a great channel but a bit more corporate and feels a bit more like an advert for Garmin than an appreciation of the fine art of running (well, plodding for me being a fat middle aged man who is lucky not to get arrested when wearing lycra in the school playground when dropping the kids off!).
@@mattcook1976 understood, and very interesting. I'm sure the lycra look works.
Just an observation-parkrun does not now allow dogs with a leash attached to the waist of the runner
Correct David, not anymore, this was filmed before that rule came in.
I suppose if it was just one person doing it there would be no issues but imagine if 50 people showed up doing that it would be chaos.
@@bighands69 the irony of it all is that having the dog on a belt or a harness is the safest way to do canicross, leashed at the hand is a trip hazard, a tangling hazard and a drop risk wherein the dog is now unleashed. The problem, I guess, is that people kept showing up to run with their dogs without learning good canicross practice first.
Honestly, I think they should have just outright banned dogs, instead of this weird thing in which tripwires are allowed, but good safely-run-with-dog practice isn't.
That was cool. It'd be interesting to see what she could do if she unleashed. Sub 17 I think
And maybe we’d film it
Philly has a 5km PR of 15:52, could she return for a do-over and throw down a 16:30 on a Park Run? 😳
Not quite that time at this parkrun but on tarmac she’d be rocketing close to it
Sub 20 💥
💥
I can see the point of banning dogs but I wish they would just move it to another day or something so the doggos can get their runs in. :)
Perhaps someone will set up a specific canicross version of parkrun, who knows
Thank you for watching and commenting
They haven’t banned dogs just canicross leads as apparently it resulted in a number of accidents - probably the insurers. To be fair they have always said on a short lead.
unproductive lol
that watch is a bully
Absolutely Sam, cruel really
Did she breath at all? ;)
Barely
@@thisisjogon HR 20 :)
Her unproductive is a death sentence for most of us.
Great comment
Unproductive😂😂😂😂😂😂
Mental
haha "unproductive" my watch would have had fireworks and a trophy and would have said personal best. Well atleast i can run 5km 🙂
unproductive :)
It makes you wonder what Phily’s watch considers ‘productive’ Jacob!
lol nice "unproductive" run
Mental
"unproductive" and "bring your own press officer, do you?" were actual lol moments!!!! great video!!
Thank you Mathew, great to know people watch and enjoy these videos
All the best,
Harry
That watch has the BURNS! =P
Garmin always does this too me I get a 5 k pb and it says resting or unproductive like bruh
If you think about it, 20min 5k is actually slower than her Seville Marathon time pace. So she was running at a pace slower than her marathon pace for the 5K. Its crazy what these elites can do.
It’s absolutely mad isn’t it. This is something I was aware of when I made the video, but ended up forgetting to include that fact - it just makes it so much more ridiculous
Thank you for watching
Anyone who is elite at any sport makes it look effortless. Phily was gliding along like a catamaran skimming over the waves. I am a big guy from weights and yes I can run 5K but I am more like a battleship ploughing through the sea, it's a massive effort for big guys to run distance. Well done Sir!
Crazy isn’t it. Thank you for watching and commenting
Yes it is. It's just a different kind of fitness.
Story telling on point sir, am about to watch this again a few times at least 🤩
Thank you for the experience
Philly, if you get into parkrun, I'm sure there are many course records there for the taking.......
@@garthcox4 sounds like a good excuse to travel to me!
@@andyclark8991 thanks Andy, not sure about hopping on one leg for a sub 40! Sounds like you’re close though
800m time pb if you improve maybe 5km under 15min? , you have good natural endurance congrats. I've been running since 1990.
Harry grimacing in pain. Philly relaxing like she’s walking around the supermarket 😂
Tell me about it, she was chatting at that pace
That pace was almost 30s slower than her marathon pace, so barely above her aerobic threshold at best (beginning of zone 3) and she ran like that for less than 20min.
From a marathon training perspective, that parkrun could have qualified as warm-up before an interval session so it's no wonder her watch (which intimately knows her zones 😏) mistook that race for a trash session 😂
Crazy to think phily’s marathon pace per km would’ve been enough to get first place in that 5k
It’s nuts isn’t it Mikey, just such a superb ability
absolutely love this so much. its funny how Phily makes it look so easy.
Bradley I was dying, she glides. After this she went for a training run to actually get out of breath.
Different level.
@@thisisjogon i could see how hard you where running and how easy she makes it look.
Your point about longer runs in the warmup is so true. I get to parkrun by train and the nearest train station to my local parkrun is about a mile away. I recently started running the mile as part of my warmup and I noticed a surprisingly big difference. I've knocked about 35 seconds off my course PB there.
Great to hear, and thank you for watching
Haha this is amazing as this reminds me of my sister and me. She can comfortably run a marathon and I'm struggling next to her after 2 miles😭😭 Glad I found your channel
That’s great - I know it’s sobering to run against someone who’s not really breathing.
Welcome, thank you for finding it and commenting!
Harry
If Phily raced that course for real against the runners that ran on that day, as a 2:34 marathon runner, she could have won outright by about 3 minutes.
Mental isn’t it
Coming to this late, but Phily's watch reading "Unproductive" at the end of the 5K had me 🤣😂 Great job on the sub-20!
Come to it anytime. Mad isn't it.
Have gone sub-18 now, funny to think how things have moved along
After the first 500m Phily was not even breathing!!! Now THAT is scary. I have trouble breathing when I finish a Parkrun.......great video Harry and very well done.
Absolutely Gary, mental fitness. Hope you’re well
Does the 'unproductive' indicate her heart rate didn't go above her resting rate?
Unsure what it means, her heart rate definitely would be quite a bit above resting. This was still sub 6:25 miles
Sub 20min "unproductive", my Garmin would call the ambulance if I tried.
Ha, amazing comment
I ran 24 miles in 2 days and was unproductive on garmin 😂 function is rubbish
It’s an absurd function isn’t it Charlie
This is the first of your videos I've come across and I've never subscribed after watching a video so fast. I'm 29 and after a nasty shoulder injury playing rugby a few years ago I've gotten myself right out of shape. Sitting at a crowd blending 198cm and 134kg at the moment. You've inspired me to lace up the running shoes again. Thank you, sir!
198cm is an awesome height (I am a measly 184cm). Good luck with the comeback and thank you for subscribing, you are most welcome.
Harry
Garmin watch is loopy, a run with Harry 'Jog On' Morgan is never unproductive
Well, sometimes
"Unproductive" - I never knew a watch could give sass 😂
So much sass Niamh
Unproductive 🏃🏾😂

I just finished watching Phily's video on the same ParkRun! Very cool to get your take on the same day! Thanks for sharing this! SO glad I've found your channel!
Dev, love it and thank you. Yes it’s interesting to have two perspectives.
It was great to run with Phily, just tough to keep up!
Thanks for watching
Harry
Come down to Bushy - flat and fast, well it can be. Not for me though, I’ll greet you in the funnel!
Definitely planning to Jonathan
I only liked the bit where you were lapping other Park runners. As a 30 mins 5K runner I am in their situation and felt happy recognising my own kind 😂
Ha Tony, great to be out there smashing it whatever the pace
Thank you for watching and commenting
Great video, I can barely breathe if I run Sub 25 minutes. I love parkrun and all abilities. Phily Bowden also seems to have an amazingly calm mindset.
Cheers Nick, yes Phily is incredibly calm and collected - no doubt it assists her relaxed approach to running
Phily made that look easy. I don't know what you were messing about at though, Harry 😂😂👍🏻 Brilliant stuff. Well done both.
She was cruising, I was not. Cheers for watching Mark
ideal warm ups get longer as the race gets shorter in my experience. 500m for marathon, 4k for HM, 5-6k for 10k and 5k. I inadvertently ran a hilly 8k before a parkrun last year and got a massive PB.
A really interesting point Alex, there is definitely a fear of fatigue before a race that can put people off running much.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts
If I ran a 5k warm-up, doubt I would finish the parkrun without walking. Depends on how far you can run.
Brilliant video Harry illustrating both the joys of running and that it can also require some tremendously hard effort. We ran Roding Valley on Saturday and the weather, for once, was beautiful. Cheers 👍
Glad to hear the weather was good for you Paul, this one as you saw was all over the place

This was hilarious. Loved the commentary. You got an amazing time! I can't believe that guy got a 18:22 :O WOW! Great video =]
Thank you Mike, yes, some of those front guys are flying
When i used to do parkrun there was a guy who used to get sub 20 minutes pushing a child in an off-road pushchair. Absolute legend!
Wow sub 20 in this weather and terrain? I’m can only do sub 20 if every condition is perfect! Haha. Phily is awesome. Makes it look like a easy run.
It wasn't easy I can tell you!
Thanks very much for the comment and view!
Trying to get my running mojo back after 3 months with post covid fatigue. 5km below 30 min is my first target, then hopefully back up to 50min 10km. but at 58, getting there will be a struggle. Still this video has got me out of bed and off to the gym so cheers for that!!
Great to hear you're on your way Richard - keep up the great work and stay motivated!
Run strong,
Harry
@@thisisjogon thanks for the encouragement. Pictured the park run as I went 5km in the running machine - 29' 40". Get in
I'm 57 Richard and a long way from completing a 5 km thanks to long term lung damage from covid. However your sub 30 minute goal has inspired me to get back out there and aim for a sub 45. Thanks for the idea, just having a goal is a huge inspiration.
@@bone0944 good on you. I tend to run on running machines at a gym (better for the knees and more control over the speed etc.) I set myself a primary goal and a stretched and double stretched goal - happy to get to the primary, even happier if I get further. I'll then use that goal until I have met it 3 times in a row - then I'll set another goal a bit more difficult. So if you are wanting to run the whole 5km, set a goal (say 2km at a known speed, 2.25km stretch, 2.5km double stretch) - when you can do that then you can either increase the distance before slowing or increase the speed at which you run it.) I like to use the running machine as I have more control over the speed as well - I'll set it at the start and then increase it at fixed intervals - this tends to be good as that first km can be a killer but I find my lungs open up as I run. When I'm feeling happy that I can do the 5km, post covid without needing to slow down, I'll start to increase the distance goals until I can get back to the 10km mark. I have also plotted my progress before in Excel and that way you can see your progress
@@bone0944 forgot to say - have you tried the couch to 5km app? My ex used that to get her to the 5km mark

Agree with you on the warm up! If I know I want to try for a reasonably decent time (I usually run the 21 / 22 min parkrun), is to do a warm up of usually a mile or two
