Their first album was titled "Lynyrd Skynyrd ((Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd))" lol named after their HS teacher Leonard Skinner iirc. Legendary story of the band's history, plane crash took the singer and several other members/crew right after their latest album hits the stores with a photo of the band covered in flames...they pulled the remaining copies and replaced them with the same pic minus the flames, making the flame albums extremely collectible in a morose way. they continue on to this day with the original singer's younger brother leading the group. saw them a few years ago, definitely bad ass. Main reason I wanted a son! So I sung it my nephew every night before he went to bed for 3 years while my sister was locked up. He stayed with her for 2 years and unfortunately went to prison. Last year he sung it to me when he graduated high school.
The original drummer for this band lived about 2 miles from me. Unfortunately he passed away in a car wreck about 2 years ago. He was one of the coolest people you'll ever meet. He had been sober for many years but his home was open to anyone who needed to talk or was struggling with addiction. He would sit and talk to anyone anytime especially if they were struggling with demons. It wasn't until he passed away that people realized how many people he really affected in their time of need. Of course, Free Bird was played at his funeral. ❤️
I’ve heard this song for 40 years but watching you hear it was like listening almost for the first time and it gave me chills. Glad you enjoyed it. I’m with the rest on FreeBird and That Smell but would like to add Was I Right Or Wrong and Mr Banker.
My mom passed away 2 years ago. Some of my greatest memories are sitting around a campfire by the lake listening to her play the guitar and singing this song
This genre is called Southern Rock :) They are beautiful!!! I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd about 13 years ago.... at the time with only 3 original members left but man they can still jam..... so much feel to theirs songs..... makes sure you here FREE BIRD ..... THAT SMELL
Definitely Freebird, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Tuesdays Gone. Definitely The Allman Brothers Band (Dreams) live preferably. Guitar solos out the ass, 3 different drummers going at once, not including other percussion, and correct me if I'm wrong, 3-4 different guitarists. Talking about trance city. Will not disappoint!!
Named after a teacher who hated long hair. They came out on stage early in their career and shouted something about “Leonard Skinner,” amd the name kinda stuck.
This was one of the last songs I listen to with my dad before he passed away. One night I was at my parents and he put some music on for me and said I know you love this song. I didn't even think he knew I loved this song. So it was a nice moment for me knowing my dad remembered little things like that. A few months later he passed away from a heart attack. My mom had the song playing at his funeral. I walked into the funeral home and bang, the song came on and I was done for the rest of the day. A well of emotions hit me the moment I heard the first guitar note.
I LOVED watching your reaction to a song I’ve known for 40 years. Wow. I am a college music instructor and have taught Intro to Music, previously called Music Appreciation, for almost 15 years. While the goal is to introduce students to “Classical” music, I use many pop, country, blues, etc. songs in my course, and the way you listened to and your reaction and comments to “Simple Man” is EXACTLY what I want students to learn how to do. I don’t expect them to fall in love with Classical, but try it AND be able to discuss it, just as you do! Could I have your permission to use this video in my course? Thank you!!
Beautiful song, great message. You should check Free Bird, Tuesday is gone, Sweet home Alabama and a few more. Oh, this is not country my man, is Southern Rock. :) And,,,wait a minute, Seahawks hoodie? :) That’s my team, I live 2 hours from Seattle. :)
This song always chokes me up, its basically exactly what my mother told me a couple of years before she passed of cancer. Never forget your words mom.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - One In The Sun, Tuesday's Gone, Saturday Night Special, That Smell, You Got That Right, What's Your Name, Gimme Three Steps, Don't Ask Me No Questions, Call Me The Breeze (to name a few ☺)

Not country music. This is Southern rock in the same vein as Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers and Molly Hatchet. You should definitely check out some Creedence Clearwater Revival- Have you ever seen the rain?
Credence may sound like southern rock but they came from California. They were fascinated by the south and they drew their inspiration from southern life and culture. Most of my life, I thought that they were from the south as well.
Greetings from Fort Worth, Texas!!! Hey man I absolutely LOVE this song and always have. It has to be one of the greatest pieces of art ever created. And congratulations to you for discovering not just Southern Rock... but the Kings of Southern Rock!!!!
Preston, you make my heart happy. Just watching you listening to rock and roll and Southern rock makes my day. I have loved music ever since I could remember and I never differentiated between white music or soul music or whatever. Music is music. If it fills your heart that's all that matters. Bless you.
*Lynyrd Skynyrd* • Freebird Live in Oakland '77 • Tuesday's Gone • The Ballad of Curtis Loew • Four Walls of Raiford • Give Me Three Steps (My Dad's favorite) There are a lot more great ones, but those are the main ones that come to my mind right now.

Lol they're not really country. They're Southern Rock, which takes alot of influence from country and blues but amped up more. I guess by today's standard of country, it could be considered country though
Lol I live in southeast Texas. The amount of City cowboys here would amaze yall. I'm no fan of country but I do appreciate good music and respect country. I'm a metalhead but southern rock has and will always hold a place in my heart
Ballad of Curtis Loew is about a kid that idolizes an old black blues singer that used to play on a street corner and drink his wine. Sort of a reaction song if you will. It's a great story song. Check it out for sure whether you do a video to it or not.
Lynyrd Skynyrd are known as the southern rock Guitar Gods they play with so much soul that southern rock it's amazing touches your soul love watching you Explorer music man it's a Great Awakening for me to be able to get to revisit these songs on 45 I grew up here in this music through my older brother
If there is one classic rock song in the history of time, it is FREE BIRD.... there’s a reason why every rock concert even to this day has a guy yelling free bird
Do yourself a big favor and read the biography on the Skynyrd. Then check out their music. They only had a short time and the sheer amount of quality southern rock music they came up with in that time frame is unmatched, in my opinion. Oh....and the band had 3 lead guitarists....the lead you heard in Simple Man was a double lead (2 guitars).
My Mother introduced me to Lynyrd Skynyrd as a young boy with this song, i still try to hold true to the words in this song, and will always be one of best memories with my mom.
Preston try the Eagles, "Hotel California " anything off that album is amazing! "Those Shoes", "Seven Bridges Road", plus other albums like " Desperado", "Witchy Women", "Life in the Fast Lane", or "How Long". I saw them on their Hotel California tour in 1979. Totally incredible. They sound better live! Back then there wasn't Auto Tune,or any other dubbing.

Skynyrd has so many great songs most all were the ones that got no radio play. Needle and spoon, everymothers son, Georgia peaches, comin home, gimmie back my bullets lot of blues, country, soul,an rock inspiration in this band ronnie van zant is a legend
It breaks my heart to this day when I hear them . I lived across the street from this bar on Highland in Memphis state area. My two sisters and I were there early evening when all these great musicians From Memphis came in. Then comes in Cassie and her little bro Steve Gaines. Back up singer and best guitar player around. He played alot of the solo's and sang. We stayed there and played and partied till 6AM the next morning. They had to lock us in to be legal. Cassie went to Memphis St. In the past. She was such a sweet person and could sing her butt off. Steve was kind of shy. He was married with three kids. Played the hell out of that guitar. You know how you meet someone and really Connect. We walked out the door with them and kissed and hugged Them goodbye. Two days later their plane crashed, I think it was in MS swamps. Both of them died along with Ronnie VanZant the led singer. I don't think My sisters and I will ever get over That. They were such good people. Such a shock and loss. LS was needing a guitar player. Ronnie asked if anybody knew one. Cassie says my little brother plays. Ronnie says ok , not thinking It was going to work out. Then the band heard him and flipped out Ronnie loved him. He just made the band click. They were so good. They are southern rock and country Stole their sound. All's good. They claim the Allman Bros too and I think they are more blues. But we now have Chris Stapleton . Good trade. One of my favorite LS songs Is Give Me Three Steps. I have been called Lindaloo all my life. Lol
As the others mentioned not country music.... SOUTHERN ROCK at its finest! Very blessed to have been a kid in the 70s and I have sons' of my own and have sung this to them..... It was an AMAZING time and filled with AMAZING TALENTED bands and singers!!!
@@aaroncole3941 WHOA man! Southern rock is the child of country music! Don't insult the greats like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams & other classics! I will consent to calling modern pop country music shit, though.
@@tednugent8501 Fun fact ( that is not that funny) , it talks About how they sensed death near, due to their lifestyle, after they released the song, they all died, so yeah "That Smell, The Smell of death..." Got em sadly
Remember this song was written 10 years before videos, so for 70's tunes, ignore the crappy videos and just listen to the music, like we did when it was released. Great job dude!
Last time I heard this it was played at a funeral for a young man just 22 and graduated from college, died on graduation night. He was a great kid with so much promise, we all went like babies...Thanks P.

You have to do free bird by skynyrd. Absolute classic and an icon. The solo in this is nothing compared to free bird.
Yeah if he does the live version, all skynyrd is better live, traveling man
Agreed he should have done that first.
Tuesday's Gone b4 Freebird. Freebird isn't a bad song but it's a tad over rated.

Good ol Jacksonville Florida southern boys..I grew up with them back in the 70s ...may Ronnie Van Zant RIP.
I love this song so much. Still one of the greatest songs ever written and sung.
All skynard songs tell stories. One of the most solid bands of all times
"solid" especially after the plane crash
Greatest southern rock band ever Preston👍
you should check out Slobberbone if you like southern rock. 4 albums of pure badassery.

The genre is called Southern Rock. Not country. You need to hear their song Curtis Low, and Tuesday's Gone. Great songs.
Debbie Fulton ... Tuesday's Gone!!!! Beautiful!!!
To me Curtis Low is their best song.
Irrespective of genre, there's an extremely heavy country influence. You see genre spillover in all the arts.

Steve was kind of shy. He was married with three kids. Played the hell out of that guitar. You know how you meet someone and really
Connect. We walked out the door with them and kissed and hugged
Them goodbye. Two days later their plane crashed,
I think it was in MS swamps. Both of them died along with Ronnie
VanZant the led singer. I don't think
My sisters and I will ever get over
That. They were such good people. Such a shock and loss.
LS was needing a guitar player. Ronnie asked if anybody knew one.
Cassie says my little brother plays. Ronnie says ok , not thinking
It was going to work out. Then the band heard him and flipped out
Ronnie loved him. He just made the band click. They were so good.
They are southern rock and country
Stole their sound. All's good. They claim the Allman Bros too and I think they are more blues. But we now have Chris Stapleton . Good trade. One of my favorite LS songs
Is Give Me Three Steps.
React to the song, Gimme Three Steps by them. I feel like that song has it all.
Eagles-Hotel California is a must.
Foo Fighters Everlong!!
Whatever genre you define it as, it’s overall greatness cannot be denied.
Most all of their music is like that. Definitely a legendary band. That was my first concert back in 93.
Country?? 😂 no he just didn't say that... This is Southern Rock bro not Country!!
I know. I loled! Southern rock= awesome, country=shit! Check out some Allman brothers
@@aaroncole3941 Country is awesome too, but only old school country, not "bro country" or pop country people mistaken it for.
@@aaroncole3941 WHOA man! Southern rock is the child of country music! Don't insult the greats like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams & other classics! I will consent to calling modern pop country music shit, though.
Easy mistake to make, give the guy some credit
@@insaneclownhoty It's also fair to say that Creedence and Skynyrd had a large influence on late 70's to mid 80's country.
HOLD ON BRUUUUUH!!!
I love it when you say that.
Anyway, listen to "That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, that's my jam!
Whisky bottles! Brand new Cars! Also my jam man!
Spoiler. Its about drugs n isht.
@@tednugent8501 Fun fact ( that is not that funny) , it talks About how they sensed death near, due to their lifestyle, after they released the song, they all died, so yeah "That Smell, The Smell of death..." Got em sadly
Yessss
What's "That smell"? 😂😂😂
Remember this song was written 10 years before videos, so for 70's tunes, ignore the crappy videos and just listen to the music, like we did when it was released. Great job dude!
You seem a simple man indeed. Appreciate the love you have for music. Brother
Next Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird live

Classic. The Deftones cover of this song is amazing too. Would highly recommend checking it out.
Last time I heard this it was played at a funeral for a young man just 22 and graduated from college, died on graduation night. He was a great kid with so much promise, we all went like babies...Thanks P.
