Sadly everyone took the exact opposite meaning from the song Coolio was trying to make. He was trying to point out that hood life ruined everyone and they used it as a statement of being hood. He wanted people to wake up and break out of their boundaries that entrapped them in a life that was quite literally killing them. Just like everyone keeps saying to listen to Weird Al's Amish Paradise, but Coolie utterly loathed the song and refused to sign off on it even as parody. He felt the concept of the song was too important to ruin with comedy. And I personally agree with him.

"I'm 23 now but will I live to see 24? The way things is going I dunno." That hits me harder than anything in this song. A lot relates to my life but 23 was when I came back from my life as a mercenary and getting back into society was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I even contemplated not aliving myself on many occasions just because of where my life was at. Felt like it had no meaning. I've since moved on and adapted back into society but this song always gives me reflection into my own past.
This was my first hip hop cd. I was 10 years old. Lived with my dad up to that point before he sent me to live with my mom. She had started dating all black guys after my dad. She was with this guy who had just got out of prison for 10 years. When I was older he explained to me he was og blood. I don't have any experience with gangs or being in one but it was pretty surreal going to the club with him years later and having dudes come up to him every other song buying him drinks and shit and just showing respect. I guess he was somebody to them. I mean he was to me too but not on that level. Anyway, rewind. I was 10 years old, mom was visiting with friends (getting high) I was little white boy walking to the basketball court at the gov. housing with some of the other kids that lived in the apt she was going to (kids know to get out the house when shit like that's going on) and I fell behind for some reason. Can't remember. But I do remember looking down and finding this cd on the ground. Most of the cd didn't work because it was scratched so badly but this song played perfectly because I listened to it over and over and over again. I loved this song. My ears weren't trained enough to listen to that fast paced of lyrics yet. All my dad listened to was country and rock so rap was a new league. But even tho I couldn't tell what he was saying it spoke to me. I can't wait to play this song, amongst many others, for my children.
Coolio went from rapper, to Chef, and Cookbook author. Dudes actually hella smart too! You need to check out the movie Dangerous minds. That song is in the movie, as well as actress Michelle Phieffer, the woman in this video. Another great video my friend, Anna
Waterfalls, maaaannnn... I haven't heard that song in a long while. Bet I still know the words though! I'm about to fo find out... thank you for the reminder!!!
This is one of the most abused and misused songs I've ever heard. This isn't a song about promoting gang life, either real or the insincere version in pop culture. It's a testimony to how messed up it is, how hard it is to learn anything else growing up in it, and the damage it does both to self and community. It's also partnered with a movie that admittedly has some white savior going on but also humanized kids in inner city schools and tried to show that they aren't the lost causes everyone writes them off as. It's one of the few songs that I get pissed off about when someone sings along happily to it. Thank you for listening to the lyrics.
It's weird, listening to this song now hits much different than back then. The rap I listened to was the earliest days of Three Six Mafia, Trina, of course Ice Cube and Snoop and Dr. Dre, etc and before that N.W.A and so on. So I remember this song being much softer than it actually is, I guess versus the rest of what I was listening to. This is a REALLY good song.
This was the JAM. I remember this playing 10 times a day, everyday on MTV during the summer of 95’, along with Shaggy - Mr bombastic. The following year all I remember being played on MTV was Bone Thugs - Crossroads and Tupac - California love
i remember this was one of the first songs i heard. my dad use to be embarrassed to play it in his nicer neighborhood. litterally one of the best songs of all time.

This song has been playing in my head the last few days. Glad you’re reacting to this. You have to do Weird Al’s version now, too. (You have an amazing voice, btw.)

I really wish you’d react to Aretha Franklin “nessun dorma” One of the most famous opera singer was supposed to sing this song but ended up sick. Aretha stepped up and said: I can do this.. hold my phone!
Some years ago my daughter in law took my son and some friends to Vegas for his 30th birthday. At some point they went into a little bar. Coolio happened to be hanging out there. They all wound up playing beer pong together !
Ok Leo .. now your doing it !! (48) white female ... and this song has been in my playlist NO MATTER WHAT PHONE / IPOD / MP3 ETC .. device I have ever had .... WATCH THE MOVIE !! suggestion Bonz Thug and harmony ... CROSSROADS
You are absolutely right about listening. Especially with the kind of music you’re listening to now. You HAVE to find out what the artist is trying to say, the meaning behind the song. Some bands much more than others. Very, very important with some bands. The message is just as important as the song structure itself. And it just builds on your comprehension and enjoyment. If you have a song that sounds great and then figure out the powerful lyrics, it just blows you away. That’s what it’s about. We all get pickle skin. 🎆
I don’t know much about rap.but I heard you say your open minded ! You can’t learn if your close minded ! You have to be open to LEARN congrats to you. Listeners know your open minded. Lol. Have to be to do what you do. Bless you Mr Video.
M.V, The song is the theme song for the profound 1995 movie “Dangerous Minds”. If you watch one more movie this year make sure that’s the one. It is well worth the watch.
I loved this song since I was a kid. 29 now.. I remember playing this in my truck when I was 18 to show a friend (RIP) my sub system. Felt a kinda embarrassed playing it for him at the time, because I didn't know or have much rap, and figured that this song was probably something a casual out-of-date rap fan would be thumping. This and "Dear Momma" by Tupac. Lol Still love this song and that bass line that's playing through the verses.
This is one of those songs that takes me away and puts me RIGHT in the singers shoes. I can see the entire story in my minds eye. Thats not MY imagination, thats Coolio directing my thoughts and visions. Always a great song.
So much talent in this song. the musical writing , the melody, the beat, bringing it all together to perfection. Then add the power of flow and in your face lyrics , man this is CLASSIC ! Love you ! Mean it !

Stivie Wonder let them sample his song "Pastime paradise" with one requirement - there must be not a single dirty word on the song.
It doesn't always have to be dirty word's.
Hey bro haven’t seen one of your reactions in a while. You’re good at this keep it up!
Hell yeah, this song and TLC’s Waterfalls, same year, blew up!!! Both of them so socially conscious.
Waterfalls, maaaannnn... I haven't heard that song in a long while. Bet I still know the words though! I'm about to fo find out... thank you for the reminder!!!
Love that song!
When you screamed “23!!” I died 😂😂😂😂
LMFAO I don’t know how I came across this video but the “23?!” Had me rolllling 😂😂😂
This is true
This is hard when you put it against the music out now.
The movie and the this sing are super deep. I watched when it came out in 95. Not a dry eye in the whole theater. Even the men where in tears.
- it was a good day- Ice Cube
Didn't have to use my AK, LOL!!!
@@jacqueline4514 right!!!
I think it's the best known lyric in gangster rap. Even people that don't listen to rap know the line
My name in lights on the Good Year Blimp 👊
@@jabreck1934 Ha! Yes, and it still sounds good!
Another vote for listening to "It was a good day" by Ice Cube
This was the JAM. I remember this playing 10 times a day, everyday on MTV during the summer of 95’, along with Shaggy - Mr bombastic. The following year all I remember being played on MTV was Bone Thugs - Crossroads and Tupac - California love
"23 !?!?!?! YOU LOOK OLD AS.." LOL Coolio was 32 at the time
Lol
Damn. And here I thought he was actually 23 in that video since I was a kid. 😆
He's telling the story of the kids depicted in the film.
@@vinniemoran7362 So there's 23 year olds in highschool?
@@Gutslinger Watch the guy (in the movie) he's actually singing about. He's no 16 year old.
It was actually " facts" BANGER 👍 love you Leo n your reaction 😂❤️
"23!?!?!?" That cracked me up! 😂
Hahahaha sammme
Yeah, he's not 23. The character telling the "story" is 23.
i remember this was one of the first songs i heard. my dad use to be embarrassed to play it in his nicer neighborhood. litterally one of the best songs of all time.
Check out the movie Dangerous Minds with Michelle Pfieffer from the 90's, this song is on that soundtrack : )
my mood cheers up 100% whenever i get ready to watch your reactions...which take awhile to get to cuz of your singing and smoking and chatting!! lol....
So excited you reacted to this, another great vid!🥰🎶👍🏼
Can we all just take a moment to acknowledge how smokin' hot Michelle Pfeiffer is??? 😍
she was on graham norton explaining how her kids get embarassed cos bruno used Michelle Pfeiffer that white gold in his song lol.
She was my first girl crush! Haha!
The original by Stevie Wonder is powerful and sadly, still seems relevant. Songs in the Key of Life was a monster album. Nearly every song a banger!!
You should design a shirt that has your arm with goosebumps that says "Chills Activated"
Any graphic artists out there? Send this man this design

I'm no expert at photoshop, but I'm pretty proud of this.
@@BeverlyHighland Yes!! Please put it under regular comments so Leo sees it. I don't think he has time to read replies.
@@simplyamazed4059 will do
@ Beverly Hyland, that’s perfect. Hell it⚡️s Brilliant!!!
@@BeverlyHighland NICE!
When you acted like you were clearing the smoke Coolio was blowing I died 😂”I was supposed to be listening but I got caught looking at him, sorry guys.” 😂😂😂
LOL! Yeah, he didn't look 23 at all!
But it's such a great song! Coolio was very underrated in my opinion.
I Love 90s Hip Hop!
I showed the wife a couple of your reaction videos and she was rolling! Especially to your Ram Jam one. Appreciate the content and reaction vids. This one was long over due...I was 13 when it came out and it was my first exposure to the rap genre.
I just posted this on Facebook the other day saying it was one of the best songs ever. If it still hits you 25 years later it's a classic banger. This still hits. Sorry for the additional comment lol
Absolutely ❤ how you let these songs hit you my friend... You Are Brilliant my friend... this was an Anthem to a lot of us....
Whoa...This takes me waaay back... Try "I wish" by Skee-Lo
Oh man... I wish I was a little bit taller
I wish I was a baller.
I wish i had a girl who looked good, i would call her.
@@jerryhansen5116 🤣 I haven't thought about that song by Lil Troy in many years. Thank you for reminding me
Yasss this is a classic. When this came out we all loved it.
I'm a handicapped, Midwestern, white chick in her 30s and I still remember all the words to this song lol. Music in the '90s was so awesome!!
Me too, but south eastern.
I love that you did this! The songs message still resonates today.
This song has been playing in my head the last few days. Glad you’re reacting to this. You have to do Weird Al’s version now, too. (You have an amazing voice, btw.)
L.V. has a great voice. Love this song soooo much. Mr. Video you are my man. I just think that it would be such a trip to hang with you. You make me happy.
I really wish you’d react to Aretha Franklin “nessun dorma”
One of the most famous opera singer was supposed to sing this song but ended up sick. Aretha stepped up and said: I can do this.. hold my phone!
And she slayed! I second this request!
Pavarotti did it justice every, single, time that he did sing it. Lui non dormiva mai. "Nessun dorma"...sempre nel mio cuore ❤
CROSSROADS
Same!!!! Except I’m 41, but yes to everything else!!!
And yes please do Bone!!!!!
This song uses Stevie Wonders "pasttime paradise"..great songs
Live your reaction
I don’t know much about rap.but I heard you say your open minded ! You can’t learn if your close minded ! You have to be open to LEARN congrats to you. Listeners know your open minded. Lol. Have to be to do what you do. Bless you Mr Video.
M.V, The song is the theme song for the profound 1995 movie “Dangerous Minds”.
If you watch one more movie this year make sure that’s the one.
It is well worth the watch.
Coolio is a real one who doesn't mince his words . truth bombs everywhere with zero warnings
Such a great tune! Do more oldschool rap you havent heard Leo. You should hear Many Clouds of Smoke by Total Devastation, you would love it!
Nice call there little known group
I loved this song since I was a kid. 29 now.. I remember playing this in my truck when I was 18 to show a friend (RIP) my sub system. Felt a kinda embarrassed playing it for him at the time, because I didn't know or have much rap, and figured that this song was probably something a casual out-of-date rap fan would be thumping. This and "Dear Momma" by Tupac. Lol
Still love this song and that bass line that's playing through the verses.
Reaction Paradise! Another solid Mr.Video post, Leo!!
This is one of those songs that takes me away and puts me RIGHT in the singers shoes. I can see the entire story in my minds eye. Thats not MY imagination, thats Coolio directing my thoughts and visions. Always a great song.
As your channel has grown, I have witnessed you grow. I get a since of joy watching your reactions. I love experiencing those aha moments with you.
I love your reactions my dude
I’m a child of the 70’s, 80’s rap is the only rap! True talent and passion!
This was 90s rap
So much talent in this song. the musical writing , the melody, the beat, bringing it all together to perfection. Then add the power of flow and in your face lyrics , man this is CLASSIC ! Love you ! Mean it !
Love this song! This is from the movie Dangerous Minds! Great flick!
Great movie, great song. 🌷
Great movie
I agree 👍
The movie was trash. I was one of her students. None of it ever happened.
@@Annonymous0283745 really? So LuAnn wasn't a good teacher?
I'm a huge metalhead, always have been, this is my all time favorite rap song, ppl are always shocked cuz I know it word for word. I bought the soundtrack long ago just for this song, it's badass
And the sad thing is Coolio never made it out. He is serving a sentence right now for I think drug trafficking
I was reading tons of comments and thought for sure I would stumble across somebody saying you know the music for this is 100% lifted from Stevie wonder’s “pastime paradise” But nobody gave Steve really love so I’m doing it now because he deserves tons of credit
I was thinking the same!
I feel like everyone my age (35) knows this song. It blew up when it came out.
Love Coolio, his voice, what he stands for. RIP Brutha! But without L.V. this song would fall short. He puts soul into the chorus.
