Thanks for the review, I was a one click away from buying this myself and I just did not know if I really trusted the specs I was seeing on the screen. you're by far the best and most fare review I have seen on this camera plus, I am a big fan of your channel. Video production on premier is newer to me and your videos have help with my photography business just by learning some of the technical stuff you have taught. Thanks again for being a good teacher and please don't stop doing what you do. You have a gift.
I got this camera last year when it first came out. It had known issues of the lens not being properly installed and out of focus (an easy DIY fix) and man I love it! I'm glad to see that you got the updated version with the lens fixed :) Something that I love about this camera apart from the design, is that you can use scripts to improve its capabilities like longer shutters, faster bitrates, protune like colour and more. The Wifi app works wonderfully, and really love that in Timelapse mode you can choose between taking a video or individual stills, and set a duration for the video. Also, to expand in one of the points of the video, one of the ways that Xiaomi reduced the price of the camera so much is that it doesn't come with a waterproof housing, although it is available through third parties as they don't manufacture the themselves, and because all the internal structure is made of cheap plastic, so it wouldn't survive a fall without a cage or housing. Great video as always Curtis. PS. My latest video was recorded entirely with the Yi Action Cam ;)
Thanks for the video! Questions: I can only see white/lime versions on xiaoyi site, where can one get black version? Is there any way to attach external mic? Shame how these Chinese companies have trouble putting proper specs on their site (or it's hard to find / hidden somewhere), products many times have nice features not listed anywhere (like loop recording, and that "2k" resolution you mentioned).
In the US, the black version (and others) are available at Amazon: amzn.to/29iavuP And the US website has the specs here: yitechnology.com/actioncamera/index/id/2/status/2.html
As always, nice concise gear review. I was actually looking at an SJCAM SJ4000, but now I am considering this one. It would be interesting to see side by side video quality.
When you get that wide with a small sensor, you get that fisheye effect. The Yi has a feature that corrects for that and it works decently. Still not perfect, but not too bad.
+Curtis Judd I know it's a difficult ask. You would have to have a bigger lens to help correct the fish eye. But if you look at the native camera /lens in the new phantom 4 they do a good job of optically correcting the bendy horizons without it being much bigger than a GoPro.
+biscuitsalive good point! Looks like the Phantom 4's camera has a 94 degree field of view which makes it not nearly as wide but much less distorted. That makes sense.
Well, thanks for that, Curtis. Good timing as I'd been thinking about picking up a small action camera lately. Ordered the Xiaomi Yi after watching this (£56 in the UK on eBay - an extra £8 for the underwater housing, and another £9 for 2 spare batteries and a dual charger). Interested to see what you think of the 4K version when you get your hands on it.
Hi Curtis. Great video yet again. I have got a Yi action camera. I also have the Soocoo S33WS. The Soocoo has a screen and it is great quality for the price. Keep up the great work.
I have a GoPro 4 Silver, love it!! Do not, however love the price tag. My niece wanted an action camera for her 15th birthday. So I was looking for something GoPro comparable without the GoPro price tag. Did a lot of research and decided on the yi action camera. Picked up the camera, selfie pole and Bluetooth remote for 101.00 usd. On the prime day deals this past week. We set it up today and here are my impressions... - camera - very nice and same size as a GoPro. The housing is a really hard plastic. I do not think it's as durable as GoPro out of the waterproof housing. - Selfie pole. Honestly I was expecting a cheap add on pole. Far from it! This think is quality, same build as my $50 SP United pole but with a much softer, comfortable handle. - Bluetooth remote - nice, works well. Not waterproof like the GoPro. Fits well and locks into the selfie pole. Camera - Really easy to use. No lcd screens. It relies on the different colored lights and blinks for the modes. The quality is
Very informative and useful review as alway, Curtis. Can you tell me if the Yi HD camera has an option to change the default settings from NTSC to PAL (25 / 50fps at 1080p etc)?
How long does the battery last? what's the biggest card it supports? how long of a 2k vid can you record? i'm going on a 10 day backpacking hike and want to record and do some time lapses how many micro sd and batteries will i need?
I'm getting 1:30 to 1:45 on the battery, closer to 1:45 when I turn wifi off after getting everything setup. According to the manual, it can take up to 128GB cards. I have not run into any record time limitations, I think the limiting factor is battery life. It can be powered via USB port. How much space a video takes on the card depends on many factors but a one minute long 1080p30 clip with moderate camera movement (which means it will have to do a bit more processing) took up 95MB. Have fun on the backpacking trip!
Yes, you can charge it from a USB battery pack. Re: waterproof, you might find this review helpful where the guy reviews 5 different option for the Yi camera: ua-cam.com/video/e9hCEJyPS6Y/v-deo.html Best wishes!
It's amazing to me that you still take the time to answer all fan questions. I must have asked you 50 questions in the last few months and 50 more last year and you still answer every single one of them. Then again... this is why I keep coming back and liking all your videos! Still, very impressive!
Hi Barry, I'm getting between and 1:45 (with the WiFi turned off after getting things set up) to 1:30 with the WiFi on. That's as good as the specs or better.
If you know where to look & depending on your country, you can get it as low as 60-70 USD. I've had mine for almost a year now and the thing II don't really like is the terrible mic & battery life. However the batteries are super cheap. BTW the newer Yi 4K has the exact same sensor as the Hero 4 black but the battery lasts way longer on 4K recording AND has a full colour touch screen.
Thanks for this review. Time to replace the old but still excellent Mobius Action Cam to this one on my bicycle. Hopefully 128GB card will let me store at least 5 hours of footage at 4K. And I hope the additional battery packs won't ruin my budget ;)
Hi Curtis, Thank you for the informative video. This looks pretty interesting although I wanted to asks you about the memory capacity. Would you mind sharing the video capacity for this camera? How long of a video can you record? Also, could you record while having the camera plugged in to power? Thank you so much for your help. Yuko
Hi Yuko, that depends on the card you use. According to Yi Technology, they suggest the following: Yi Action camera requires a micro SD card with capacity between 16GB and 128GB with FAT32 format. We recommend using a class 10 and above SD card. And then it also depends on the resolution and framerate you choose. With the larger cards, you'll probably run out of battery first. :) Also, unfortunately, no, you cannot record while charging with the Yi Action Cam. Best wishes!
I've watched this several times because I'm interested in the camera. I only just now noticed you had the handlebar mount mounted on your finger. It made me laugh. :D
The time lapses were straight out of the camera without any retouching. The slo-mo clips were conformed from 60 to 24 fps and I applied a basic adjustment to the highlights and shadows using the Lumetri Color effect in Premiere Pro. Other than that, no fancy retouching.
Hi Abhijit, the Yi action camera is compatible with class 10 micro SD cards up to 64Gb in capacity. The full specifications can be viewed here: www.yitechnology.com/actioncamera/specs/id/2.html Thanks!
Amazing as as well. It rivals my old hero 3+ black. The picture quality is very nice as well. The app is very well done and you can control everything with it and view what the camera is seeing from the phone. Battery last about 1 hour 20 mins. Not bad, like GoPro buy more battery's. To sum up: for the price this is an amazing camera! Def. a GoPro 3+ quality. I was able to buy the camera (US Edition) selfie stick, Bluetooth remote, 2 battery's with charger, yi waterproof case and a 64 gb micro as card for 149.99 usd. Unbelievable!! Thank you for your review. After looking at all of the different reviews, yours was one of the best. BTW .. The differences between the Chinese model and US model. The US model has a better battery and battery life. The wi-fi is specific to US. The main difference is the Chinese model has a IR Filter built in. Not sure why yi decided to not give the US model the IR Filter! The side by side comparison shows how much cleaner the filter makes certain light.
Curtis, can it be powered via USB while it's recording? That's another very good review BTW. Thanks for all the hard work you put in to giving us so many great tips, tricks and reviews!
Yes they do. They cost 29.99 usd on Amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B016I7FARQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468536229&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=yi+waterproof+case&dpPl=1&dpID=41xM9Y6zBYL&ref=plSrch

I bought this camera last year for $64 with free shipping so I would say you overpaid quite a bit. The good thing about this camera is that it doesn't come with no unnecessary junk. You buy the accessories you want/need. I bought a go pro like housing (you can mount go pro filters on it) for $6 shipped and it even has a protective lens from real glass. Because it's cheap, you don't have to worry about destroying it. That's not the case with cheaper go pros because the housing is not replaceable. Once you're scratch it or drop it, it's done. The yi cam also comes in a travel edition with a great selfie stick and a bluetooth remote. The comunity support is amazing and you can modify the camera to your liking very easy and you can do stuff yo can't do with a go pro. You can buy an lcd screen for framing or a bigger battery pack that connects to the back of the camera. The biggest downside of the camera is the lack of audio in connector. You can't use the go pro external audio connector which is a shame.
P.S.- The scripts are very easy to use and you can modify all kinds of things with them. For instance, you can unlock the bitrate of the camera like on the Panasonic GH series.
@judd here is a great side by side video by another great reviewer on UA-cam. You can def see the difference in certain light conditions with the IR Filter. ua-cam.com/video/anwr_8JIB1g/v-deo.html

Xiaomi is a pretty impressive company! Footage looks killer for the price. Loved the drive up Parley's. :D Cheers!
Haha! Good eye, Quinn!
And as always.... stay Snazzy ;)
This is the best dash can I've seen so far, thanks for the review.
Thanks John.

Thanks Wade, I agree. In fact, I heard of the SJCam before I heard about the Yi.
Good review. I'm curious how the lens compares to GoPro fisheye.
Really waiting for a 4 K action can with a ultra wide but non fisheye lens.

+Louis Yagera it has electronic image stabilization which helps a little but not in the same league as optical image stabilization.
Great video Curtis. These Yi's 2k are often on Amazon, Banggood or Gearbest for $60-70 range. I got my International version for $71 from Amazon.com.
Thanks Dan, even lower barrier!
What is the video settings used in shooting the footage
I'm sorry, it's been so long I don't remember.
Great video, Curtis! We appreciate your work.

+UKAirscape yes, absolutely.
Aha, terrific. Very useful to know, thanks!
Hi Curtis. Great video yet again. I have got a Yi action camera. I also have the Soocoo S33WS. The Soocoo has a screen and it is great quality for the price. Keep up the great work.

I have the US version.

Yes, you can change it to PAL 25 or 50FPS at 1080p.
Thanks for the review. I don't remember anything about battery life. How long did it last for you?
Between 1:30 and 1:45. I hit 1:45 when the WiFi is turned off after setting things up.
Thanks. Thanks for all these videos you are doing. You've helped me a lot making decisions and learning how to make better videos, lighting and sound.

Glad that the subtle humor made you laugh. :)
can you use it for live streaming?
and can you make a video of that thanks
Hi Emmanuel, unfortunately no, not directly. You'd also need an HDMI to USB or thunderbolt recording hardware device.
Curtis Judd if I have the interface for the computer can I use it to do live streaming
Yes, if your interface will take an HDMI feed and convert it to a digital stream your live streaming app uses, it'll work!
would you be so kind to review the: gitup git 2 action cam, is been said that is better than this one for a similar price.
thank you.
Hi Cesarin, thanks for alerting me to the gitup, I hadn't heard of it before. No promises on a review but I'll see what I can do!
Great! Thank you kindly.
Was the footage from the Yi retouched?
The time lapses were straight out of the camera without any retouching. The slo-mo clips were conformed from 60 to 24 fps and I applied a basic adjustment to the highlights and shadows using the Lumetri Color effect in Premiere Pro. Other than that, no fancy retouching.
Thanks for the info.
Great video! Good find on the camera!
Thanks Ryan!
sir can you please confirm that 128gb micro SD card is supported or not on the Yi cam.
Hi Abhijit, the Yi action camera is compatible with class 10 micro SD cards up to 64Gb in capacity. The full specifications can be viewed here: www.yitechnology.com/actioncamera/specs/id/2.html Thanks!

Yes, another good feature I forgot to mention. And thanks for the feedback!
+Curtis Judd great, thanks for the confirmation. You've pushed me over the line to get one of these...
I hope it works well for you!
What if there's no wifi? How do you sync it to your phone?
The camera creates a wifi network.
does it have a waterproof casing?
Yes but it is sold separately. But beware of faulty ones, as Xiaomi doesn't manufacture them directly
Yes they do. They cost 29.99 usd on Amazon.

I agree!
More goodness from Curtis.
Thanks!
What better? International version or chinese version?
Not sure.
it have slow motion feature or not ?
You can shoot higher frame rates and then slow it in post but I don't believe there is a slo-mo mode in the camera.
Also, this is an older model camera at this point, I'm not sure they even make it anymore. You'll want to look at the more recent 4k action cams from Yi. Good luck!
Thanks Curtis !

You're welcome!
You look tired man! Nice video,if i hadn't spent my allocation on a quadcopter id have bought it
Haha! I was tired! Thanks and best wishes with your quadcopter, sounds like fun!
Man, these people are clever and this solves my issue of recording inside a car
Yes! It is harder to mount a mirrorless or DSLR in a car.
I love the fact that it doesn't have a screen. That's the only reason why I bought this, instead of 4K version.
Being in the army and having a screen, which is giving away your location is not a great idea.
