+MarkHawkCam Hate to ask for another comparison .. but Xiaomi Yi vs. Polaroid Cube+.... please. btw can you adjust the color temp on Yi, so that sky looks more blue than green?

At 8:08, I'd say the Yi looks significantly sharper - I might be able to pick the guy in the train out of a crowd from the right hand image, but not the left - same with the grain on the fence and the wood cart and floor. The roof tiles are also very obvious where it looks like detail is compressed right out. This jives with what you're saying and some past clips. Is there a chance they are mis-labeled, or is the Yi really the right hand image?
i like the more natural color of xiaomi yi, for me the color is more correct :) , btw. one of the best comparisons if Yi and GoPro3/4, on yt so far (and I have seen a lot! ) ;) thanks, cheers!
+rocheuro Glad it helped. Thanks for posting about the hacks too. Think that sucks is the evening I finished filming with the Yi here, they launched a new firmware that added 2k recording without hacking it. Still feel the camera is showcased strongly here though and glad they continue to support it for all markets.
+One Brothers Productions A lot of drawbacks on the xiaoyi The startup time is one of them,it takes like 10 seconds to startup and also it overheats really fast. And no,it only does 1080p. Every setting must set in wifi like the session but the xiaoyi doesn't do timelapse without wifi. The xiaoyi has a tendency to go high iso and fast shutter speed most of the time. Also the xiaoyi has a shit awful shutter lag. Still it's not bad,I own one myself and I like it
Do you have any thoughts on compression artifacts on images with the camera moving? For example, trees/flora usually goes awful when moving. I'm not sure if it's UA-cam's doing, but the pool dives and some of the shots of the sea by the pier seem to have a lot of blocks of artifacts. Your thoughts? Thanks for the excellent video!
+John Gott Yep, this has a lot to do with bit depth, color range, color profiles, and compression. Imagine you have a deck of 52 cards. Each one goes from white to black over the course of these 52 card. Now when you apply a color profile that really makes the blacks and whites POP, it's because you're taking that deck of cards and reducing it down to 32. So now you have more shades of white that are told to use this shade of white instead. This can be a problem when you have areas of a similar color with slight variations like foliage or even the sky. Since shades of green are so close to one another they start to blob to these reduced color. There becomes a very clear divide from one color area to the next since we are missing grades of colors inbetween the two shades. Unlike my card example though this is happening over the course of 52 million colors. It's just an even bigger issues when those leaves are moving and creating motion blur in your camera. Hope this clears it up a bit. Best way I can quickly explain it.
Great Video, thanks for making it... And you gave the session 4 a good review compared to the Xiaomi Yi * a camera i've never seen in stores in Australia. Great to hear you hit on the Microphone system in the session as that is exactly the reason I picked the camera.
+Iain Watson Smith I've heard from a lot of users the Yi's Microphone and batteries issues have been addressed in new versions on store shelves. That said, I've yet to get one myself.
+MarkHawkCam Its a non-entity over here in OZ. Nobodies ever heard of it, so I was surprised you pitted it against the session... Anyway, thanks again, its given me a kind of inspiration to go out an film some cool stuff.
great detailed review. awesome man. just subscribed. hope you can do a review just like this with the SJCAM SJ5000x elite (with the latest firmware) and the Xiaomi Yi. because im planing to buy and im really torn between the two :D thanks man!
Been getting a lot of SJcam requests. Reviewed them in the past but never liked them. Been debating to re-add them to the list to see if anythings changed.
+Ian Dale Nadela Hero4 Session got a price cut today. $199 now. Not sure if this helps. What are you using the camera for? Do you use a smart phone a lot?
I own both of them. session for strenght good audio and unbeatable form factor and Yi for nice video quality built quality for the price its awesone. I would like to say that both of these cameras are really worth to have them because they doing good job for good price bang for the buck. good enough for UA-cam Or Your holiday videos, or any action videos. of course you can find better cameras but you need to pay a lot a lot more and the quality difference is not really so much better
+Steve Moore doubt it'll be called the 5. I'd expect a Hero4+ to be out late this month or early October. They release a new GoPro normally around this time. Only really curve ball to this is them putting out new models this summer. Other then that though, new GoPros have come out every year for the last four in late sept- early oct.
That's said every September. Then with 3 days to go, GoPro has a conference. But I have no idea, just going off the track record. I'd still wait till first week of October to buy right now.
I could honestly be happy with the quality of either. They keep swapping back and forth a bit for me when comparing shots. Now that you can get a Session for $199 or potentially less it makes it more of consideration. Have any of the Yi's issues (mostly sound and batery life) been rectified without having open the thing up and play around with it? In most cases I would be recording off road racing at 1080/30 preferably from under the helmet visor. Yi seems like I'd be a bit more limited to chest mounting. Also, is there still a larger battery available for the Yi? My typical race runs 1.5-2 hrs.
+frayed100 The Session has made some great updates not only to their price, but their software as well. The Yi has a US model now that fixes the major issues with audio but rumor has it Yi is set has a successor soon. Not sure when but there have been a lot of leaks.
how long does battery life last on the Xiaomi ? and i see sound isnt that bad as the video showed us, some people say something could`ve happened in the video.
+Albertguti Guti I've done about 4-5 videos so far with the Yi. Can only comment on our experiences. No tape or interference to the Yi anytime. This is of course something that could have improved in later runs of the camera. There is also a battery life drain issue for some of the earlier runs. Our experience around 25-35mins but if you got a newer unit, issue might be resolved.
спасибо купил Xiaomi Yi после твоего видео, она немного желтит и оказалась с небольшим браком, но я всё исправил и снимает она очень круто за свои деньги!!!
+Dominic Lawrence Sygaco There are some good rumors that Yi might have a new camera right around the corner. I'd hold off if you could otherwise both take pretty decent photos. If you go with either of these, the firmware updates improve boths abilities for photos.
Is it possible to take single photos without using the app...for example, I would like to go in water with it and be able to decide if I want to take photos or make a video.... Thanks
Is it worth to get the Hero4 Session for the reduced price of $299 if i already have the Xiaomi Yi already? Mainly using them for regular adventure travelling only.. Stuck in a dilemma thinking about this..
+Terry Wong It actually is the price I would recommend buying it at. While video quality debate is still there the Session offers better audio, underwater ability, and functionality now. There is an update that added a whole bunch of functionality recently. I plan on doing a review of it (Just moving into a new house so it's been tricky) but it adds the ability to change settings through the buttons. So you wont need a smart phone. It's also a lot more stable now. I took it on a vacation to test it all out and it was good time. Only complaint is it takes a little long to turn on and start recording. (about 3-4 seconds)
do this camera have active noise cancellation feature while recording like iPhone and Samsung have. purpose of use recording indoor musical concert recording near stage with lot of low and colorful lights and very high music and songs playing nearby
+Jonathan Himself It can handle up to a 64 Gig card, but get a class 10. I got a Samsung off Amazon for like $19 or so. And I don't believe there is a time limit, but of course if the card fills up or battery dies, then yes, but it has a "Loop" mode, so not sure. If it were plugged in for power and on loop mode, it would possibly go forever, lol. Hope that helps.
@markhawkcam I just bought the new go pro session price for 299.99 with a bundle of the sd card and head mount on amazon. After a day of use I started to charge it and after it was charged to full it woudlnt turn on. I contacted amazon and they sent me another one the following day. (I found a fix online for the first one. You just need to hold the power button for 10 secs to reset it.). I received the 2nd on yesterday and I turned it off on a long 1.5 hour train ride home. When i took it out of my bag, I noticed that it was really hot. I turned it on to find that it drained the battery to 10%.. Im afraid to keep this action camera. The gopro hero 4 silver is only is $65 more but doesn't include any accessories. I might pick it up but since im on a budget im still not sure what to do. Have you had any similar problems with your session since you've filmed this?
Hi. Now in my country (Romania) the go pro is 200$ and the xiaomi (the international one ) is aprox 150$ (I have to purchase a water house and a rubber one). So which one should I buy? :) have a nice day!
some parts xiao mi yi is a bit sharper like the cars in the parking lot or the amusement park behind it. And xiao mi yi could hold up to 1h 45min when 1080p 30fps
+korling99 The Yi Action Camera does have an HDMI but not sure if it can record and display a live feed at the same time. Might be for playback only but the camera itself has a dedicated mini hdmi out.
My Xiaomi YYi doesn't look like this :( I don't know if it's bad focus or my lens is just bad i've tried to get the best focus and i can't get it, it doesnt look that sharp
I have the Original GoPro Hero HD, very old, I'm looking to upgrade as I'm moving to Canada in Decemeber, would people recommend the Xiaomi Yi Action Camera? Need some help haha don't want to spend a load
+ByStratt It's got some issues that have been resolved (constant battery drain for example). If you can, try and find an outlet that moves through their innovatory and would require them to have gotten some of the newer stocked cameras. Good camera for it's price, older ones just had some issues though.
I would like to say that I own both of them and both of them are really worth this price level. One Of The Best Action cameras for beginners and intermediate users. of course professionals will say you can find something better ohh yes but you need to pay nearly double so decision is yours as it's your wallet and you spending
The Yi definitely is the best at night. Sometimes I GoPro looks better in terms of color but sometimes the Yi does and one could always tweak color in post, if they want to.
+MarkHawkCam Did you actually take it apart to look? Your sound on your Yi sounds like mine did before I took it apart and inspected the mic. Other possibility is that the rubber covering on the internal mike is blocking it. It should not sound like this.
and add that that Xiaomi Yi with hacked firmware can record 2.5k .. which is quite amasing .. and there is a hack of 35Mbit.. so this doubles the value of this tiny camera. Love it.
While usually not a gopro fan, this one is definitely way better than the Yi. Seems like the Yi could only do green, really poor with red, and blue was not great either. Only thing going for the Yi, is that it is cheap, but you get what you pay for in this case. The gopro was a little heavy in the contrast, but otherwise totally blew away the Yi in all other aspects.
I don't think so. I saw the raw footage, and I think it is really close. It definitely does not "blow it away". Everyone thinks the Gopro is the best because it's famous. The fact really is they are overpriced.
+Curious airlines Depends on how picky you are about image quality. The Yi comes close with sharpness when in the 2.7k resolution, but not in other modes. And does not do color as well, as I mentioned already. I think the Yi is OK for kids, or maybe first time action cam buyers, where cheap is more important than quality. While the gopro vid quality may be better, I wouldn't recommend it either. It is way overpriced for what you get, and much better action cams out there at that price or less.
Yes, I guess. That is a good point, that everyone is different at how picky they are. In my vision, I can't really tell a difference, and I really agree that the GoPro image is not good for 400 dollars. The Yi may be slightly worse, but again, I can't tell a difference. You really just have to see the raw footage. The Yi is 60 bucks though, and I love it. I've been using it for a couple weeks, and will never upgrade. P.s I think you are going a little far telling me it's for kids ;)
My dad has the Gopro hero 3+ black, but he always has it at his office at work. I have good experience with the Gopro cameras, and and again, I can't tell a diff between the yi, the hero 2, and the hero 3/3+ (all of which my cousins, and of course my dad, have) Maybe it's just me :) my dad got me the yi for me to use for my Rc hobby, as it is a lot more cheaper than crashing with a Gopro.I haven't seen the raw footage of the session, but I've heard it's similar to the 3+ Black.
+MarkHawkCam tks bro, but the problem is my pc couldn't play the video on the micro sd card. Im using win xp. Can you help me with this ? I would very appreciated
you can fix the mic, there is a piece of tape over it, stupid right? but you can open the camera take out the insides and pull out the mic, then peel off the tape.
+Aidan Sawyer I've checked mine, no tape. I've also bought 2 hoping to get one of the newer SKU's that fixes it. No luck just yet.I'm sure it's fixed but I have no way of knowing I am buying a newer SKU model.
MarkHawkCam I guess it's just the way xiaomi does it, I bight a new one that should be here tommorow, and I was gonna test that, how new is the cam you used in the video?
+Elsa Bellet ah, thanks. Yeah it's a shame. I've already bought 2 trying to fix this. Can only base my experiences off the ones I got. Anyone have tips for spotting the newer models? Serial number, added accessory, packaging change?
The only real comparison on UA-cam
indeed!
I really like your video style :) fantastic video!

+One Brothers Productions A lot of drawbacks on the xiaoyi
The startup time is one of them,it takes like 10 seconds to startup and also it overheats really fast. And no,it only does 1080p. Every setting must set in wifi like the session but the xiaoyi doesn't do timelapse without wifi. The xiaoyi has a tendency to go high iso and fast shutter speed most of the time. Been getting a lot of SJcam requests. Reviewed them in the past but never liked them. Been debating to re-add them to the list to see if anythings changed.
Hey man! Just wondering what you meant by adventure videos?
hi, is this the first generation of Xiaomi Yi , or it's the 4K version ?
first. The new one is called the Yi 4k. We have a few videos on it. Its also not tied to Xiaomi now.
@04:00 It shows the difference. Help me decide please what should I get.
+Ian Dale Nadela Hero4 Session got a price cut today. $199 now. Not sure if this helps. What are you using the camera for? Do you use a smart phone a lot?
Amazing review!
another great video. just wish you added the price for the hero4 session... for a comparison to the Xiaomi Yi.
Thought I brought it up right before the audio tests when I'm looking up the dock
Great video! One thing: I'm a little confused, the Yi camera is waterproof without a case?
No, Yi is only waterproof with a case. Hero4 Session is waterproof without a case.
Thanks! I'll be picking up a Session today.
This is a really good camera test . I just need to know how does the yi handles movement, for example riding a bike
Awesome review
+martin van heusden Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback :D
keep on good review

great vid!
Can the audio can be fixed by yourselves at home.
+Kimsea Chea From what I understand, the audio issue has been resolved in newer models.
Which one would be better for making slow-motion videos?
hey ... Yi can do the superview too.
+Kimsea Chea If it can, it would of been added after this video was made. The day I was filming these events, the added 2k video to it as well.
how long does battery life last on the Xiaomi ? and i see sound isnt that bad as the video showed us, some people say something could`ve happened in the video.

Our experience around 25-35mins but if you got a newer unit, issue might be resolved.
Please review SJCam M20! Its the best SJCam so far and its cheap too.
Shortening out - Xiaomi Yi is GREAT for the price, but the battery sucks
Awesome review.
can u put external mic on yicam?
Its a stock Xiaomi? Or you have custom firmware installed and bitrate set higher? Thanks for answer..
Stock
Should also mention is was one of the launch stock models. Some hardware changes were made over time.
I was wondering how the Yi 2 would compare to my current SJ4000 :D
I'll have more on the Yi2 later this week. ;)
+MarkHawkCam awesome, thanks, looking forward to it! great comparison, this video😉
I have Xiaomi Yi and the audio of mine is 1000% better than your Xiaomi Yi, i have use it to audio recorder too. Check that!!!!
+Francisco Justel sure this video is fake for make a xiaomi lower then a session
+Francisco Justel good to hear. Sound of YI in this video is nothing special, but I am glad to hear that yours is much better
+Francisco Justel mine was crappy,but I have a microphone so wasn't a problem
ThatPyotr how the fuck is possible that some models have shit microphone and some good?
his review is not neutral. my audio with the YI is much clearer then what he shows. and the same remark about the video. Yi doesn't have a green cast.
спасибо купил Xiaomi Yi после твоего видео, она немного желтит и оказалась с небольшим браком, но я всё исправил и снимает она очень круто за свои деньги!!!
That's the best comparison of all
Does the Xiaomi Yi have a microphone port?
+Potato Can't recall 100% but I want to say no.
should i get a xiaomi yi or the gopro hero session? i only need it to take good pictures with a wide angle tho. or should i just get the entry level?
+Dominic Lawrence Sygaco There are some good rumors that Yi might have a new camera right around the corner. I'd hold off if you could otherwise both take pretty decent photos. If you go with either of these, the firmware updates improve boths abilities for photos.
MarkHawkCam great reply! Id wait for the next xiaomi yi then!
Two cameras were placed in a slightly different field of view. the YI camera took more on the left side.
DId they fix the audio problem with a software update maybe? Xiaomi is usually pretty good on updates usually
hardware issue, but newer versions seem to have fixed it. I'd hold off though if you're looking to buy. The Yi2 seems right around the corner.
oh wow thanks for your fast response... looking for something inexpensive to record a trip with my friends next week.
If you are in the states they put out an offical US version. Should address some of the issues and make updating the camera very easy.
Yes but the YI2 is arround 250 dolars. The first generation shown in this video is under 100.
Hey Mark, Will you get your hands on with the Yi 2 anytime soon ;) ?
+MarkHawkCam can you update the xiaomi yi and do another video?? plz!
+HIDSTER FILM PRODUCTIONS kind of waiting for the Yi 2 to hit the market and I'll prob throw it up against the updated American release model.
if you update the official software then you can record 2k 30 fps on the xiaomi yi can you make a video about that?? plz
Can u speak a little faster so mobody knows what u r saying?
Lol you owned him.
Is it possible to take single photos without using the app...for example, I would like to go in water with it and be able to decide if I want to take photos or make a video....

It's not xiaomi's green tint but it's session's weird red/pink one.
go pro is more saturated and the temperature of video looks cool
yi is less saturated and video has a little warm temperature to it
and go pro has a little more contrast than yi
+MarkHawkCam Hi, can you tell me please if you have time limit video with the Xiaomi or ot depend os the size of the SD card ? Thx

and the xiaomi yi 2 fixed all these issues very well IMO, linustechtips did a review and from what I saw it was good
Picked up the US version last week and putting it up against the Yi2. Shou;d have my reaction to the improvements on both later this week.
+Demon0ne I have had similar results. I recently upgraded the firmware to 1.5.0 and it's much more stable.
Hi. Now in my country (Romania) the go pro is 200$ and the xiaomi (the international one ) is aprox 150$ (I have to purchase a water house and a rubber one). So which one should I buy? :) have a nice day!
GoPro looks like it tends towards purple, why no mention of that?
Contrast way pumped up too. A lot of black.
some parts xiao mi yi is a bit sharper like the cars in the parking lot or the amusement park behind it. And xiao mi yi could hold up to 1h 45min when 1080p 30fps
does the xiaomi yi have live hdmi output?
+korling99 The Yi Action Camera does have an HDMI but not sure if it can record and display a live feed at the same time. Might be for playback only but the camera itself has a dedicated mini hdmi out.
+MarkHawkCam It can record and display from what I've seen with others.
is there yi iOS app ? I only see one for 4K version
That app works for this camera now. It's all one app for the Yi family of action cameras.
thank you
You did a great job. I would go for the one that cost me lest money, this camera are about even quality. Thanks
My Xiaomi YYi doesn't look like this :(
I don't know if it's bad focus or my lens is just bad
i've tried to get the best focus and i can't get it, it doesnt look that sharp
+Ernesto Espinoza Ochoa Some people here in the comments mention a focus mod fix for me. It's not something I did to mine but it could help you out.
MarkHawkCam
i'll check it out, thanks dude :)
+Ernesto Espinoza Ochoa Did you fix the problem ? or your footages still looking bad ?
+amir ladhar it is not looking bad since i installed mod firmware with 35mbps :)
Good, if you change the memory card to a better one (class 10 memory cards) it will be better ! :))
with xaomi yi you can easly increase the bitrate and record in 1440p to get more detais in the image
OMG GO PRO LOOKS SO GOOD
Just saw a Hero5 Session on sale at Target for $128.
You can focus manually the xiaomi yi for better sharpness, and it really works better.
the yi 4K is now down to 210$ usd if you look around. probably the best action cam for the money
Essentially the Xiaomi Yi 's mic cuts the high frequencies out.
+Tom Park There's a piece of tape covering the mic from the factory for some reason. Search youtube for audio fix
+Calico MortyCash No tape covering this port.
+MarkHawkCam Did you actually take it apart to look? Your sound on your Yi sounds like mine did before I took it apart and inspected the mic. Other possibility is that the rubber covering on the internal mike is blocking it. It should not sound like this.
3:58 sharkness :)
+Árpád Hegedüs Very real threat in Santa Monica. They wait at the top of stairs and slide down right at you. Very scary.
and add that that Xiaomi Yi with hacked firmware can record 2.5k .. which is quite amasing .. and there is a hack of 35Mbit.. so this doubles the value of this tiny camera.
+Curious airlines Is this your first action cam? If not, what have you used before?
My dad has the Gopro hero 3+ black, but he always has it at his office at work. I have good experience with the Gopro cameras, and and again, I can't tell a diff between the yi, the hero 2, and the hero 3/3+ (all of which my cousins, and of course my dad, have) Maybe it's just me :) my dad got me the yi for me to use for my Rc hobby, as it is a lot more cheaper than crashing with a Gopro.I haven't seen the raw footage of the session, but I've heard it's similar to the 3+ Black.
PLSS HELP !!!
Does anybody know how to transfer video from xiaomi yi to iphone or pc ?? Really need your help. Thanks!
+Huy Wang Should be able to just plug it to a computer or use a Micro SD card to USB adapter to read it. Should come up as a flash drive.
+Huy Wang conecta la camara a la pc y enciendela, sie sta apagada no vas a poder tener acceso a los archivos
+MarkHawkCam tks bro, but the problem is my pc couldn't play the video on the micro sd card. Im using win xp. Can you help me with this ? I would very appreciated
+Holy “Oswaldo” MotorYisus sorry but i can't understand your language, can u type in english please? Tks anyway
you can fix the mic, there is a piece of tape over it, stupid right? but you can open the camera take out the insides and pull out the mic, then peel off the tape.
+Aidan Sawyer July or August 2015
+MarkHawkCam oh, well today I am supposed to receive mine, I'm gonna test the mic and see how that goes
niceeee!!!
My xiaomi yi quality sucks dnt know tryed to adjust the focus
xiaomi is laggging less on 120fps, on that zoomed rollercoaster view.

Your Xiaomi Yi has a default!Other don't! There are plenty tuto' to fix that if you want ^^
+Sogeki No Shira ?
+Sogeki No Shira Can you re-type what you're talking about?
+MarkHawkCam The sound mostly. There are sound and lens issues on the first version of it :3
+Elsa Bellet ah, thanks. Yeah it's a shame. I've already bought 2 trying to fix this. Can only base my experiences off the ones I got. Anyone have tips for spotting the newer models? Serial number, added accessory, packaging change?
at 4.32-6.35 min it looks like a place in GTA 5 :D :D :D
I love gopro cause pict from gopro is very soft
Seems like the Yi is a little more true to color
