I like that they both record in 24 bit also. I might actually order one of these Deity recorders very soon. Thanks for the review.
One interesting update: Adobe Premiere Pro is going to sync with LTC audio Timecode in a future version. They currently have this feature in the beta already.
Can you give the use case where you would use this over a wireless lav transmitter and receiver? I'm just curious. I've been needing more than one lav lately and I'm leaning toward the theos transmitter and receiver. Also do you prefer to go wireless lav or plug the lav straight in to your recorder when you are doing sit down interviews? Presently I don't do anything wireless for those sit down interviews.
If I were working on a tight budget, I’d choose a pocket recorder like this for its audio quality and reliability. Wireless is expensive when done with quality.
@@curtisjudd Do you know if the PR-2 supports split audio+TC output like the Track E and Rode Wireless Pro? They offer functionality where the monitoring audio is sent on the L channel, with the Timecode audio sent on the R channel.
Fantastic Mr judd. Great insight. Im a motorcyclist I have a helmet Rode Lav mic connected to the helmet GoPro (media mod) directly. Currently. But the audio feed is always clipping. I post process the audio on FCpx using Logic pros plugins. Now If I add a Y 3.5 mm splitter run the Lavalier into Deity’s rec 3.5 in and take an 3.5 mm out from the deity’s monitor out will it 1.send clipless audio into the GoPro? 2.will it automatically start recording when I press record on the gopro( that happens with my Sony A7rv and RODE video mic NTG) Or Should I buy the Rode wireless go with 32 bit float Tia. Your answer could revolutionise the world of motovlogging 😊
1) depends on whether the clipping is due to wind hitting the mic, or input from the mic being too hot for the GoPro to handle. 2) I don’t have this combination to test it, but my guess is no.
The audio interface functionality sounds really useful. Do you know if it can record to the SD card at the same time as streaming to the computer? I like this feature of the Rode Wireless Go. Thanks for the great review!
@@curtisjuddThanks! I sometimes need a very small portable audio interface for online interviews and it helps to have a backup recording if there are computer problems.
no slow motion either. card location behind batteries is slightly annoying but in practice you pull the batteries after a shoot then grab the card. My complaint with the US version won't allow wireless transmission while recording. People on movie sets aren't going to use this and normal creators are going to use Rode or DJI that send audio into the camera and record backup. Most sub 5k cameras don't support timecode. It's a fine device but not for me or most ppl.
Thank you very much for the video! Could you answer a question? I would like to know if the bit depth remains 32bit floats when used as an audio interface on a PC or Mac? Sorry if it was already mentioned in the video, but I couldn't find the information.
It was 32-bit float on my Mac. Can't speak for PC, but if it is supported for PC, it likely requires an ASIO driver. Check with Tascam to confirm that's supported and that they have an ASIO driver available.
Hi Curtis, you’re reviews are some of the best on YT. Im just starting out and struggling to decide between the Deity PR-2 and something like a Wireless Lav option like Sony UWP-D27. What would you recommend? Thanks 🙏
There’s always a trade off when it comes to body pack recorders vs wireless. If you’re looking to do production audio professionally, and can only choose 1, I’d opt for the Sony wireless. But if you need to keep costs lower, I’d opt for the PR-2.
@@curtisjudd Thank you, I really appreciate the advice. I need something that can cover up to 3 person interviews. Currently I’m doing this with careful placement and a boom mic but there must be a better way. I’m a one man band and I couldn’t see an example using those wireless mic solutions for more than 2 people.
@@curtisjuddthis sounds like I also need a recorder to plug them into. I think I’ll go with the Deity body recorders since I can keep my kit and cost small. Thank you
I know there’s a comparison at the start of the video, but how would you say the w. Lav pro fairs against a cos-11. I am a lectrosonics user but these might be something ill need for an upcoming project. Just wondering if it is worth it to have my cos-11 re-finished in 3.5mm. Great video as always!!
The COS-11D seems more physically durable. I haven't extensively compared the Sanken versus the W.Lav Pro, but if you like the Sanken, it seems to work well with this.
Nice video again. Thanks! Were you aware of Deity's own take at the Tenacle Sync Studio software? It's called Sidus TC SYNC. It would be nice to know your take on this.
May only complaint is that I wish it was a touch smaller and had one one battery to keep the weight down. But I guess that wouldn’t give you the 5v out for the lavs. But I’m definitely buying one or two.
Great review. I’m torn needing the best (and smallest to fit in seat compartment) recorder to record exhaust sounds on a race motorcycle using a DPA 4062 lav mic. Would you recommend this or the Tentacle or?
Now that the PR 2 is out. I hope Deity makes a Theos mini for those situations in which the normal is to big. It would be nice to have the option of a smaller transmitter.
Thank for this video Curtis. So could you clarify as maybe I did not fully understand. 1. I have 10 Tentacle Products… so I can sync these Deity? 2. The updated firmware on the Tentacle Track E to take like a shotgun mic. Can I do this as well with the Deity’s
Love your thoughtful, work as always, Curtis! So I may have misunderstood your inference, but if you buy the Deity PR2 can you buy SYNC STUDIO SOFTWARE for Mac online from tentacle, and will that software work with meta-data compiled by the Diety audio recording and do the same magic for this Diety audio recording that does with the tentacle audio recording? - Creating time code audio that shakes hands with Final Cut Pro?
Hey Curtis, love the content!! I have a quick question if you have the time - Have you every come across a bluetooth monitoring solution? I use the Zoom f3 and I would love for it to have wireless headphones. Cheers from Ireland
Thanks Paul. No, unfortunately Bluetooth has too much latency which makes using it for production sound monitoring a problem, at least in my experience.
Thanks Curtis for the stellar review, as usual. I have just one question - noticed that "AI Smart Lvl" has been removed from the menu of the PR-2, though it still shows up in the manual. Does anyone know why the feature has been removed?
Thank you for shedding some light on the matter! It is indeed a peculiar omission, considering that stereo levels can only be controlled separately on the left and right channels. We can only hope that a firmware update will be released soon to address this, or at least a feature that allows the left and right channels to be linked. I suppose I have somewhat taken for granted the functionality of my Tascam X6, though it is too clunky to function as a body pack recorder.
Which hardware revision you got? Hardware version 1.0 was very noisy That’s why they kept delaying the release of the product over and over So they fix the noise issue. You can find the hardware version in the menu Thank you
@curtisjudd Another great, useful, video Curtis, thank you. One quick Q - could the PR-2 be used to jam timecode to a Zoom F6? (in the same way you could use a TC-1)
Where does this recorder type shine, vs a recorder/transmitter like the Wireless Pro/Mic 2? I've watched your videos on all three, it seems like they have all of the PR-2's features, plus wireless monitoring on top. I'd love to hear your experience and preference ❤
When you don’t HAVE to have wireless and you want a more flexible timecode workflow. Maybe a situation where wireless frequencies are super saturated (eg a stadium or urban area). Or some people may just prefer these because they’re easier to manage with their mobile app.
Great review. Thank you. This looks pretty good. I wonder if the version you spoke of, from another country that allows you to monitor with headphones while recording, can be purchased if you live in the US.?? (just curious).
Great review. As I have become an adult in the sound world I see the limitations of my Rode Wireless Pro so maybe the Diety-3 or Diety-4 :-) I stopped using my Rode receiver. I just use the transmitters as 32-bit float recorders. Lock mode on the Dieta-2 is really sweet as are the replaceable batteries. My video/sound/light life is tied to Typhoon Carina for a bit. Keep up the great reviews!!!!
@@curtisjudd Four men died on a barge 2km from my house. For the poor typhoons and flooding are a big deal. I brought over all the bread from a local shop in the morning the evac center at the basketball court (500 displaced). Thanks so much Curtis, love to see such a positive review. Did you also try stereo recording? I kind of missed any review on how that scenario might perform, with a different bitrate and possible tools to mitigate clipping like auto gain, (digital) limiters and setting levels … 🤓
Thanks for the great review. If I have a camera like the C70 with a timecode port, what do I need to buy to synchronize this one recorder to the camera via time code? I'm kind unclear on that from your review. Thanks for the great work I love all that you do.
@@alienwisconsin 3.5mm to BNC cable for the C70 I believe. Jam camera to recorder at start of the day. But cameras aren't always the best at keeping timecode so you might expect a little drift across the day. Get a TC1 if you absolutely need frame perfect sync.
Great review. So if you can only blutooth sync between the other Deity devices this would be a bit of a deal breaker for me. I just ordered a Tentacle Track E to be able to add time code capabilities to my iphone recordings, as I am getting so tired of my wave form syncs failing in Davinci. I currently have a Tascam DR10L pro.
I need to know, does this deity work as a stereo recorder for professional events recorders. So could I connect the deity with 2x rca to a stereo trs minijack from a dj mixer like a pioneer djm900nexus. If so it would be the best stereo recorder in this price point. Specially in 32bit so it will not distort. It must handle line level audio.
But the Zoom F2 and Tascam 10L Pro can record stereo line in 32bit float while Deity can only in mono 32bit and stereo in 24bit only? That's a big deal if you need 32bit stereo from stereo sound board signal...
Great review Curtis!! My question is this - is the headphone jack TRS or TRRS? On my Tascam X8, my headphone jack is TRRS and. Can hear playback nicely through my headphones. But on my Tascam DR-10L Pro, I can only use headphones that are TRS. I’m wondering if you can use headphones that have a TRRS jack? The ones I own with that I plug.
The jack is TRS, but most TRRS earbuds/headphones are designed to playback audio from TRS jacks. I tested with an old pair of wired Apple Ear Pods with a TRRS connector and they work fine.
If it can do stereo input at 24 bit, one use case would be recording from a mixing board via a split stereo ¼” to TRS stereo ⅛”. I’m especially curious if it can do this as an audio interface connected to a computer.
It depends. They're really for different use cases. F3 is better for boom mics and when you DON'T need to plant the recorder on a person (and you want to be able to monitor in real-time).
Could the Diety PR-2 be acceptable for use on indie films, really low budget indie films? For example, compared to, say, Deity Theos into Zoom F8npro, for a sound quality comparison? Thanks.
Hy, Tks for sharing realy valuable information. Can you tell/advice me: I have 2 Sony A7IV cameras and 1 Portacapture X8 and I intended to buy 2 Deity PR 2. Iin order to have all the device (cameras and 2 pocket recorder PR-2 and Portacapture) in sync I need to buy also 3 X Deity TC1 (2 Deity TC-1 for 2 cameras and 1 Deity TC 1 for Portacapture X8). Sorry for my poor english.
I was waiting for it for so many months as it was delayed for so long. The only bad point seems to be that many other products arent compatible with the Deity timecode system :(
Thanks a lot Curtis for this review, been waiting for your take since they announced the product more than a year ago 😅 This recorder seems perfect for what I'd like to do, voice-overs + multicam shooting with a Fuji XT4 and a Fuji XPRO3 that both have a mic input. If I got it right I would have to jam the code to each camera for each take with the pr2? Not planning on buying a tc1 right away that's why. And if I buy a tc1, it would sit on the second camera and on the main one I'd plug the pr2 that would split the TC and the audio into the camera? Can any one of you here confirm the pr2 and tc1 work with Fuji? I'd appreciate any answer guys. Thanks all.
Though it's more expensive, the cleanest way to do this would be to have a TC-1 on each of your cameras and then the PR-2 on your talent. Then have all three of those boxes timecode-synched. The system does work well.
great review as always, thank you. the timecode workflow you mention in the end made me wonder if my canon R5C which has a timecode in/out port. Do I need to jam sync the two units at every boot (I do right?). Also since I have a dedicated timecode port, will davinchi recognise the time code track automatically, so no need for conversion?. Thank you
*most cameras with a timecode input should have a timecode generator connected to them through the duration of a filming session because most cameras do not have a TCXO (highly accurate clock which adapts to different temperatures). If your camera supports jamming, then you can jam and it will get you pretty close, but probably not perfectly frame accurate. And yes, if the camera has a dedicated timecode input, it should record timecode to the metadata of the video clip so you do NOT have to convert it in post before syncing.
PR-2 to Canon, but again, I would warn that jam syncing a camera (instead of attaching a dedicated timecode generator throughout an entire session) is not the most accurate way to sync.
Hi Curtis. I have one question please. Has the Line Out issue of Zoom F6 been fixed in 2024? Or do the users still have to use the workaround as mentioned in your previous video "Zoom F6 Lineout Issue & Workaround". Thank you
Unfortunately it seems you cannot get the unit to give each recording a unique name without changing the device name each time you go to record. May not be a problem for some film workflows, but I've found it is very easy to end up with lots of recordings with the same filename. At least on the Zoom F2-BT you can change the name or add a note, and I'll probably be switching to that unit.
Mentioning this only because I don't think you did, but I could hear a little bit of RF noise throughout the video, not sure if that's an issue with this recorder but could definitely be a problem for some if so.
Correction - I did find some during Dani's sample with the Sanken. I can see it on the spectrogram but cannot hear it. That says more about my ears than anything.
@@curtisjudd It is my superpower/curse, fortunately/unfortunately... I simply cannot not hear things like that. Good for having clean audio, bad for my sanity.
When using Zoom F3 for the music recordings (say acoustic guitar sound), do you recommend using two mics, do they (2 external XLR mics) make the sound better? Will the 1 XLR mic be still stereo sound? (NOTE: I'm full noob in audio recordings, but I am beginner in the guitar playing, and about to purchase Zoom F3 myself, so, having some questions)
When starting, I’d start with one mic and learn how to get the best sound you can with that, then add stereo recording later. (No, recording with one mono mic does not make a stereo recording, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t play back in both speakers.)
@@curtisjudd Okay, very interesting. Thank you! I have a followup quick Q: how the "channeling" would work in this setup? So, for example, if on the Zoom F3 I would record the audio using single input XLR mic. At the same time, I would listen to the actual audio sound using the Bluetooth Headsets, connected to the 3.5mm of Zoom F3 via the "some bluetooth adapter, am I right, that the sound, that I would potentially hear on the Bluetooth Headsets, I would hear only in the Left Ear or would it be "distributed" between the two ears? How does it (this "distribution") work, and what depends on?
@@jacksonierin you Digital Audio Workstation app (DAW), you drop the mono recorded track into a timeline and when you play it back, you hear it in both the left and right speakers (same thing out of both speakers).
@@curtisjudd Yes, yes, I understand. My latest point was only about the recording "standalone", without PC, and, to monitor the live audio sound of recording , that is Zoom F3 producing, using the Bluetooth Headphones. Am I right, that I can using BTA adapter, and then monitor the live sound of the audio recording using headphones connected to the IPhone, which is connected via the Bluetooth to the Zoom F3?
@@jacksonier There is a setting in the recording menu called file format. If you record with one microphone, set it to mono and you will hear the same thing in both ears. If you decide to make a stereo recording with two mics, set this to stereo and you will hear the first mic in your left ear, the second mic in your right ear.
Great job, Curtis! Have you tested the audio drift on the recording? I've had terrible issues with the internal recording of my Theos. I tested 6 units and they all had the same drift of roughly 20ms per hour of recording, which amounts to 160ms drift per shooting day (talking about the audio recording itself, not the timecode!). This means that the internal recording does not match the live feed in length after even an hour. If the PR-2 uses the same circuit design it might suffer from the same issue, which would make the unit useless in my opinion. Note that I've not had this issue with the tentacle Track E (of which I own 4). I tried reaching out to Andrew from Deity but their EU support person will not let me talk to him directly. I find that very unfortunate and I will think twice before investing in Deity products next time.
@@curtisjuddBasically, I output a click track to each transmitter via line-in and recorded it simultaneously in my DAW and internally in each transmitter, then imported the internal recording, lined up the first click and measured the amount of drift after each hour. Since there are two independent clock masters in this setup, there must be some drift, but not 20ms per hour! The most ridiculous thing is that, according to Deity's own specifications, the built-in timecode is supposed to be much more accurate than the ADC's digital clock! How is that possible? I would be happy to send you the recorded tracks if you're interested.
I think I'll be making the switch as a Tentacle owner. The only reason being price, I wanna buy 3 or 4 timecode devices and having each of them be ~$100 less is a lot of savings. Plus I'm a fan of the smaller lav with Deity, and having more upgrade paths.
Can you use the timecode from the Deity within Tentacle Sync Studio? I already have a license for that which is nice but might be looking to switch gear.
I can see my Border Patrol conversation: "What's the reason for your trip to Canada?" Freezing up thinking of what to say so they won't know I'm going to Vancouver to buy illegal audio equipment, "I'm going to buy bootleg maple syrup to smuggle back into the States." "Carry on."
i didnt get how quiet it is like the the other review videos you usually put it on the con-pro list at end or begining of the video. which is why iam here actually i just need a few recording gears that have no noise and are sensitive enough for ASMR or very quiet sources without any hiss. atm looking at FR-AV2 after you praised it but it cant find it anywhere hence im looking for alternatives and this comes up everywhere. sadly i dont know how quiet it is compared to zoom F3 and Tascam FR-AV2.
You mean how much self-noise it generates? Of the bodypack recorders I've tested, using their included lavalier microphones, this is the cleanest versus the ZOOM F2, Tentacle Track E, and Tascam DR10L Pro.
@@dima1353 I don't have the type of test equipment to definitively say which produces less self-noise, but based on my subjective experience with the performance of the XLR inputs on the H4essential, I'd be surprised if its 3.5mm input produces less self-noise than the DEITY PR-2.
@curtisjudd Hello, Curtis. Is it possible to use the PR-2 to record from a MixPre as a "Real-time" backup and at the same time send time code to the same MixPre, using PR-2 as Master?~ Thank you very much for your reply~

@@curtisjuddThanks! I sometimes need a very small portable audio interface for online interviews and it helps to have a backup recording if there are computer problems.
Is the micro SD card hard to remove with batteries in? Looks like you have to take the batteries out to access it?
no slow motion either. card location behind batteries is slightly annoying but in practice you pull the batteries after a shoot then grab the card. My complaint with the US version won't allow wireless transmission while recording. People on movie sets aren't going to use this and normal creators are going to use Rode or DJI that send audio into the camera and record backup. Most sub 5k cameras don't support timecode. It's a fine device but not for me or most ppl.
I had to pull the batteries and even then the card is not easy to remove. I transferred via USB instead.
Great review! Thank you Curtis.

Dang, as much as I love my Tentacle Track E...this might be a viable upgrade. Would need to switch my timecode boxes too though.
🤷♂️ I really like being able to set up the device without an app.
Great introductory video! I would love to see how it performs in stereo mode.
Me too! I need a stereo mic with 3.5mm output...
Like usual thank you for your service Curtis....you're the man
🙏
Thank you very much for the video! Could you answer a question? I would like to know if the bit depth remains 32bit floats when used as an audio interface on a PC or Mac? Sorry if it was already mentioned in the video, but I couldn't find the information.
It was 32-bit float on my Mac. Can't speak for PC, but if it is supported for PC, it likely requires an ASIO driver. Check with Tascam to confirm that's supported and that they have an ASIO driver available.
Can you listen to the audio through the app while recording? The tentacle track e can and I'm wondering if this can too.

Thanks for alerting me! I added a pinned comment linking to their new beta app. 🙏
May only complaint is that I wish it was a touch smaller and had one one battery to keep the weight down. But I guess that wouldn’t give you the 5v out for the lavs.
But I’m definitely buying one or two.
👍
Great review. I’m torn needing the best (and smallest to fit in seat compartment) recorder to record exhaust sounds on a race motorcycle using a DPA 4062 lav mic. Would you recommend this or the Tentacle or?
I don't like having to use my phone to control other devices so I'd choose the DEITY.
Wow! I never knew about that US Patent.
Thank you for that info!
👍
Thanks! Was waiting for this one! Definitely worth it as a back up. Does the knob have some sort of locking mechanism? Sorry if i missed it.
Yes - tap the button on the side 3 times to enter lock mode.
@@curtisjudd Amazing!
Thanks Curtis! Can this take an XLR input from my speaker?
No.
@@curtisjudd that’s too bad because I really like this product & you + your teammate truly did a fabulous job reviewing it.
First, would you ever do a in depth video on matching lavs with shotgun mics?
What does that mean, matching lavs with shotgun mics?
Sure.
Make the lav and boom mic sound similar. Usually they sound a bit different.
THANK YOU
Now that the PR 2 is out. I hope Deity makes a Theos mini for those situations in which the normal is to big. It would be nice to have the option of a smaller transmitter.
👍
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!
Thank for this video Curtis. So could you clarify as maybe I did not fully understand.
1. I have 10 Tentacle Products… so I can sync these Deity?
2. The updated firmware on the Tentacle Track E to take like a shotgun mic. Can I do this as well with the Deity’s
1) via cable yes, but not wirelessly. 2) yes, as long as the mic requires no more than 5V.
Hi Curtis. Another great video. Can the PR2 send time code out to a connected camera? Say with the 3.5mm line out jack?
Yes
Love your thoughtful, work as always, Curtis! So I may have misunderstood your inference, but if you buy the Deity PR2 can you buy SYNC STUDIO SOFTWARE for Mac online from tentacle, and will that software work with meta-data compiled by the Diety audio recording and do the same magic for this Diety audio recording that does with the tentacle audio recording? - Creating time code audio that shakes hands with Final Cut Pro?
Actually, check the free app from DEITY - I added a link to the first comment above.
Great review, I’m in the market for a portable recorder, this seems to be a great option.
👍
Good review. As a field recordist, 32-bit float stereo recording would have made the PR-2 practically perfect. My wait continues...
Lectrosonics has you covered.
Thanks Curtis for the stellar review, as usual.
I have just one question - noticed that "AI Smart Lvl" has been removed from the menu of the PR-2, though it still shows up in the manual. Does anyone know why the feature has been removed?
It didn’t pass beta testing is my understanding.
Thank you for shedding some light on the matter! It is indeed a peculiar omission, considering that stereo levels can only be controlled separately on the left and right channels. We can only hope that a firmware update will be released soon to address this, or at least a feature that allows the left and right channels to be linked. I suppose I have somewhat taken for granted the functionality of my Tascam X6, though it is too clunky to function as a body pack recorder.
great review!
👍
Awesome video Curtis. Good to see you. This may fit the ticket
For my next project, thank you .

Good to hear from you Will.
Which hardware revision you got?
Hardware version 1.0 was very noisy
That’s why they kept delaying the release of the product over and over
So they fix the noise issue.
You can find the hardware version in the menu

Great review. Thanks for sharing!

@curtisjudd Another great, useful, video Curtis, thank you. One quick Q - could the PR-2 be used to jam timecode to a Zoom F6? (in the same way you could use a TC-1)
Via cable, yes.
Some Viviana strap *transmitter cases will fix the exposure problem? 👍👍👍
Yes, probably. And make it easier to hide. 👍
Just to be clear.
Does this mean that instead of purchasing the TC kit, i could purchase few of these instead, for generating timecode?
You’ll still need TC-1s for each camera.
@@curtisjudd Thanks you!
We use Nikon Z8 and Z9 cameras. Will these Nikon Cameras support time code channel with the PR-2 and TC-1?
You can connect a TC1 to the Nikon cameras, yes. 👍
Or without an app!
Great review. Thank you.
This looks pretty good. I wonder if the version you spoke of, from another country that allows you to monitor with headphones while recording, can be purchased if you live in the US.?? (just curious).
I imagine people will find a way, but I don't want DEITY to get in trouble with a lawsuit.
Also, the F3 works wonderfully as an audio interface. I no longer use headsets, just an sm57 and a Shure se215. Better than any headset out there.

DEITY TC-1 timecode generator.
I would have loved to see a comparison with rode wireless pro.
Umderstood. Different product class to my mind.
You can sync via wire. I don't believe the Track E and Tascam DR-10L Pro can jam wirelessly. Maybe I'm wrong on that?
I need to know, does this deity work as a stereo recorder for professional events recorders.
So could I connect the deity with 2x rca to a stereo trs minijack from a dj mixer like a pioneer djm900nexus.
If so it would be the best stereo recorder in this price point.
Specially in 32bit so it will not distort.
It must handle line level audio.
In stereo mode, it records at 24-bit only.
Finally replacement to my zoom F2 BT which doesn't recognize my deity TC1 Timecode generator.
👍
I only ever buy audio gear once you have reviewed it Mr Judd. Thank-you. Do you have any UK affiliate links so we can support your work, please?
Thanks, @DrRussell. 🙏 Unfortunately, I don't have any UK links, at least not yet. Best wishes!
But the Zoom F2 and Tascam 10L Pro can record stereo line in 32bit float while Deity can only in mono 32bit and stereo in 24bit only? That's a big deal if you need 32bit stereo from stereo sound board signal...
Can they? I don’t remember.
@curtisjudd Nope, im wrong, they do only poly... double mono in the stereo file....
@@DMPHOTOSERBIA Thanks for checking and confirming!
Hi Chris, how do you think it compares to the Rode wireless pro, which has 2 recorders and can send scratch audio to the camera via its receiver?
The DEITY isn’t wireless and if you need only one recorder, the DEiTY makes more sense. But in terms of audio quality, they’re both quite good.
@@curtisjudd Thank you
If it can do stereo input at 24 bit, one use case would be recording from a mixing board via a split stereo ¼” to TRS stereo ⅛”.
I’m especially curious if it can do this as an audio interface connected to a computer.
Yes, should work.
Hey Curtis!
Got a solid recommendation for headphones for video/audio editing? If you have a link, I would be more than happy to support.
I use Beyerdynamic DT 700 and 900 PRO X. We covered them here: ua-cam.com/video/L6qbQAjx7t0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
How would the recording compare to the Zoom F3?
I ask because for the price they are almost the same.
It depends. They're really for different use cases. F3 is better for boom mics and when you DON'T need to plant the recorder on a person (and you want to be able to monitor in real-time).
replacable standard batteries is the first thing I look at with any non-wall-powered device I might buy :)

Could the Diety PR-2 be acceptable for use on indie films, really low budget indie films? For example, compared to, say, Deity Theos into Zoom F8npro, for a sound quality comparison? Thanks.
Yes, with practice and skill.

@@curtisjudd tks for taking the time to respond!
Since it's a stereo recorder, is it possible to have dual mono lavaliers for interviews, for example?
If they share the same input connector, yes.
I was waiting for it for so many months as it was delayed for so long. The only bad point seems to be that many other products arent compatible with the Deity timecode system :(
Yes, same with most of the other wireless timecode systems out there.
Thanks a lot Curtis for this review, been waiting for your take since they announced the product more than a year ago 😅
This recorder seems perfect for what I'd like to do, voice-overs + multicam shooting with a Fuji XT4 and a Fuji XPRO3 that both have a mic input.
Thanks all.
I believe that the output can only be set to output timecode OR audio, not both at the same time.
@@curtisjudd oh ok, I can work with that if there's TC I guess, no need for sound on the camera, I mean a backup could be nice but I can do without.
Though it's more expensive, the cleanest way to do this would be to have a TC-1 on each of your cameras and then the PR-2 on your talent. Then have all three of those boxes timecode-synched. The system does work well.
@@theothermarkwilliams yes, that’s the intended workflow 👍
great review as always, thank you. the timecode workflow you mention in the end made me wonder if my canon R5C which has a timecode in/out port. Do I need to jam sync the two units at every boot (I do right?). Also since I have a dedicated timecode port, will davinchi recognise the time code track automatically, so no need for conversion?. Thank you
also which direction of sync is better. PR2 -> Canon r5c or the other way around.
I would keep a Deity TC-1 on the camera.
Hi Curtis. I have one question please. Has the Line Out issue of Zoom F6 been fixed in 2024? Or do the users still have to use the workaround as mentioned in your previous video "Zoom F6 Lineout Issue & Workaround". Thank you
It was fixed in late 2021 as I recall. It was a hardware fix so you’ll want to buy a new one.
@@curtisjudd Thanks. You just help me save some money because I have not bought one yet.
Is it able to charge batteries via USB-C?
No.
are there any tiny recorders with a built-in mic like the Rode Go's but with user replaceable batteries?
Not that I know of, sadly.
Good catch. I have to imagine that DEITY can change that with a firmware update.
Mentioning this only because I don't think you did, but I could hear a little bit of RF noise throughout the video, not sure if that's an issue with this recorder but could definitely be a problem for some if so.
Interesting. I looked at the spectrogram and don't see any obvious RF noise and didn't notice it when editing. You must have really good hearing. 👍
I’m curious about your workflow that is sensitive to this level of drift, and also how you measured it?
@@curtisjuddBasically, I output a click track to each transmitter via line-in and recorded it simultaneously in my DAW and internally in each transmitter, then imported the internal recording, lined up the first click and measured the amount of drift after each hour. Since there are two independent clock masters in this setup, there must be some drift, but not 20ms per hour! The most ridiculous thing is that, according to Deity's own specifications, the built-in timecode is supposed to be much more accurate than the ADC's digital clock! How is that possible? I would be happy to send you the recorded tracks if you're interested.
Will you be reviewing the Deity S mic Series?
Also their DXTX Plug on transmitter?
I hope so, yes.
I think I'll be making the switch as a Tentacle owner. The only reason being price, I wanna buy 3 or 4 timecode devices and having each of them be ~$100 less is a lot of savings. Plus I'm a fan of the smaller lav with Deity, and having more upgrade paths.
👍
Can you use the timecode from the Deity within Tentacle Sync Studio? I already have a license for that which is nice but might be looking to switch gear.
Yes, at 30 fps or lower. Also, DEITY just released a beta app for both Windows and Mac that can handle framerate up to 60.
Sounded like some popping noises at 28 seconds, what was that?
Americans can purchase the international version in/from Canada.
