**NEW GoPro 5 vs YI 4K+: • YI 4K+ vs GoPro HERO 5...
The YI 2 4K is a fantastic action camera for a great price! I've been using GoPro's for many years, and though they've created a great product and pushed the envelope for development, they've definitely had their recent problems, a couple including an expensive price point, and no built-in screen for it's highest-end model, the Hero 4 Black. (Kinda absurd IMHO.)
The YI 2 has "borrowed" a lot from the GoPro playbook, yet improved on it, created a BETTER product, AND it's MUCH CHEAPER in price!
Here are some of the main specs of the YI 2:
-155 degree wide angle, f/2.8 lens
-1400mAh battery, (~2hr recording time at 4K 30fps), (8hrs standby)
-2.19 inch screen, 16:9 ratio, 330PPI
-Dual-band WiFi
-Dual Microphone
-Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), 6-axis
Watch the video for my full review - side by side comparison shots to the GoPro start at: 1:34 (In my opinion, I'd say the YI 2 footage looks just as good, or slightly better (slightly sharper) than the GoPro. I do miss Protune, but maybe we'll see that with a future update.)
Other negatives or wish list items I forgot to mention:
-I'd love to see a cutout backdoor add on for the housing case, thus I can use the touch screen controls when the case is on (if I'm not going underwater with it of course)
-The Flat color profile seems a little off, maybe it's the White Balance or other settings, but I'd like to see this improved with future firmware updates
-There is no "digital crop-in" or "Narrow FOV" modes - not a big deal, I never used those modes anyway, but just FYI
-The microSD card slot is under the battery compartment door, thus not easily accessible if it's mounted on a tripod
In conclusion, I really like the YI 2 action cam, and IMO it's the new best action camera on the market, for now! (Especially for the price!)
I'm looking forward to see what GoPro has planned for it's next Hero model, and we'll see if it can reign again...

Considering it took nearly 2 years for the competition to finally match the capabilities of the Hero4 Black (released Sept 2014), I think GoPro is doing fine. Now that they've caught up, the new Hero5 will be released before the end of the year, and it'll take another year or two for the competition to catch up to that. Until a competitor can beat GoPro to market with the *next* gen camera showing a real leap in capabilities (8K, or 4K@60, etc) I don't think GoPro is going away.
One thing that may hamper the Yi is that it's slightly larger form factor makes it incompatible with most handheld and drone mounted gimbals.

daemn42 Like every technology in the market eventually it will slow down I dont think gopro can innovate to the extend that they can beat other competitors far behind anymore. For a company like Xiaomi they did a remarkable job catching up to gopro and eventually beating gopro in its own game. I knew it wouldnt take them long to do this, Gopro golden day is officially over, however they might have few tricks under their sleeves but i doubt it would make much difference now. This Xiami Yi 2 camera is cheaper and can do twice what Gopro 4 can do.

GoPro is doing anything but fine. As of July 2015 the stock price was around $60/share. Today it's around $9/share. The company is losing money every quarter. It's not just Xiaomi that is hurting them. Nikon, Ricoh, everybody either has an action cam for sale or has one in the works. The action cam market is real and viable and there's a ton of competition now. Unless GoPro can diversify into different products of the market and/or really make their next camera vastly superior over everyone else, they are toast. You can't lose money every quarter and stay in business.

I actually bought one of these in rose gold, and am super happy. After owning multiple GoPro models, it's nice to see some pressure put in gopro to up their game and maybe bring cost down a bit. Also, great review! however I don't share your opinion on the stabilization. I find it VERY effective. I've compared some situations with my Hero 3 and its night and day.
Sweet, thanks for the comment. Yes, I think the competition is healthy. And you're right, the stabilization is still pretty good, I'm just bummed I can't use in 4K
How long and how many times have you used it? I want to get one, but I have read some negative reviews about it.
I have read a few reviews by some buyers on Amazon complaining about the camera not working anymore after just a few times of being used.
Gopro Flat color is meant for color correction, why compare it in this mode to the yi?
Agreed. You should have used the 'Flat' setting on the Yi if you want a true comparison... or set the gopro to use full colour.

Yeah GoPro Color should have been used, no point using flat and not correcting it.

don't know when this was put out, but gopro has the gopro 5 now and it is waterproof without the case, which makes great sense when you consider the case makes sound system sound a little muffled. without the case , it should fix that muffled sound you get with even older gopro cameras.it also has sound activation which I don't think any other camera on the scene offers at this point.

I have a mi 4c from xiaomi and i love it! It's amazing how xiaomi is able to make such good products with nice build quality and yet the price is lower than the other gadgets from other companies.

Flat colors is actually for people who like to do colors grading & correction in post production!

How sound system? ?
I use Yi 4k since a year. waterproof housing and 3 additional batteries cost me silly money in comparison with GoPro. after my experience I have to say that there is no way that anytime in the future I will consider GoPro. the only thing that GoPro does better is marketing.
What surprised me the most in Yi is, while using the medium angle of view, this camera capability to straighten the lines so there is no sign of distortion, and lines are as straight as they can get.

I've been importing cheap Chinese 4k action cams for 18 months and it isn't only price that goes against the gopro. Some of these cams come with up to 20 extra pieces of gear! As far as image quality, I can't go past the value of these alternatives! Great video man! Enjoyed it!
You hit it spot on... there are a TON of other action cams for a much cheaper price, but the image quality is always sub-par. This was one of the first to nail the quality AND price.
+AuthenTech - Ben Schmanke a lot of these cheaper cams have webcam capabilities. Something I find strange GoPro doesn't support, especially considering this feature would cost nothing to include.
Ooo I might get it for Christmas, I love the quality, and could be pretty good for vlogs.

Thanks. I definitely think GoPro has accomplished amazing things in the action cam market (they basically created it ;) but maybe they just got complacent, who knows, and now others are finally starting to catch up and/or surpass..

The new Yi is super awesome, but the accesories you showed right there are not original Xiaomi ones, so you can't compare them to the Copro ones, which are actually manufactured by gopro. Still even with OEM parts it would probably alot cheaper.

excellent video. I have several questions:
1) Go Pro Hero5 offer cloud technology to back up videos. Does Yi 4K have that option?
2) Is there a wireless way to transfer the videos from the camera to desktop (ex: Bluetooth)
3) I have noticed that there is an "ULTRA" (example 720 ULTRA 1280 x 720) mode as a resolution option (check 1:09) . What does this mode do? Is the pictures any better on this mode or is it a way to reduce consumption of storage space?
4) I used to have a Canon Vixia HF200 and output files of the videos where on AVCHD mode, which I hated because then I have to sit there and convert them to mp4. What is the output file format of this camera?
5) You mentioned that the Yi does well against Go Pro but does Yi have the software and customer support that comes with a Go Pro?

Great video, but where the USB ports? I have not see them in any of the photos I have searched. Is there a USB port on the side in the same place as the GoPro?
How is the mic on this camera? Does it reduce loud noise like my Hero 5 or does it record everything as we hear it. Hero 5 mic sucks.

cool review. ..at the moment I use a mobious 1 with v2 lenz..never gone for a go pro as they are ridiculously expensive for what they are.
On gearbest website's Customer FAQ, they say battery is built in and not removable but you have obviously been able to remove the battery on the video. I also saw on different websites that the battery is non-removable. So what is the deal?

My Hero 4 has a build in screen?
It appears from the video that the Yi does not have the fisheye lens? Or at least, the distortion at the frame edges is very minimal compared to my GoPro Hero4 Black. Is that the case?
I know Yi 4k+ is not waterproof but how about it's water resistance? For example having it mounted on the motorcycle helmet do I have to stop and take it off everytime it rains?
Regarding latency test, that looked pretty fast but it's hard to tell exactly what it is.
Can you film a fast clock (you can use a smartphone stopwatch app) and compare the latency of the actual clock and the clock that shows up on the Wi-Fi preview on the phone?

What about the microphone? I've got the Action Yi Cam and the micro is really bad. I use the camera on my Motorbike and the wind noise is terrible, causing distorsion as well. And with the waterproof box it's even worse...

The thing that I want most is an action camera WITHOUT a fish eye. You can get very wide lenses that don't bend up the horizon so much. (Something like what's on the phantom 4)
That's what I'm waiting for.
One thing I didn't cover, it has a sweet "Lens Distortion Correction mode: 100% of the wide-angle lens distortion correction." It actually has exactly what you're looking for! When I've tried it, it works great

hi, i have bought the yi 4k+ after watching your video. at the moment i am facing the problem, that i dont get any usable content out of the camera. i use 1080p 120fps because i want to do some slo mo shots. but the clips i get out of the camera are more than just bad. i realize, for every clip there are two files, a small one for preview on cam and a big one that contains the real footage. i use the big one. the output is stuttering, laggy and even incredibly blurry. can you tell me what i am doing wrong?

I really liked your review on the Yi4K. I just ordered the Olympus TG-Tracker not knowing first hand about the Yi. I haven't received it as yet, and watching some video reviews it doesn't appear to have the IQ of some of it's competitors, but what it does have is 5-axis IS, and for me that is paramount. A couple of questions: Have you had a look at the TG-Tracker, and do you know if there is, or will be a firmware update on the Yi4K to improve IS? Thank you Ben?

The Gopro has the ability for adding an external microphone. Good for motovlogging, I choose gopro for my primary Camera and in the future I will buy the new yi cam 4K for Secondary footage. I love the gyroscope stabilizer(video stabilization) on that Yi cam 4K.
