Considering it took nearly 2 years for the competition to finally match the capabilities of the Hero4 Black (released Sept 2014), I think GoPro is doing fine. Now that they've caught up, the new Hero5 will be released before the end of the year, and it'll take another year or two for the competition to catch up to that. Until a competitor can beat GoPro to market with the *next* gen camera showing a real leap in capabilities (8K, or 4K@60, etc) I don't think GoPro is going away. One thing that may hamper the Yi is that it's slightly larger form factor makes it incompatible with most handheld and drone mounted gimbals.

I knew it wouldnt take them long to do this, Gopro golden day is officially over, however they might have few tricks under their sleeves but i doubt it would make much difference now. This Xiami Yi 2 camera is cheaper and can do twice what Gopro 4 can do.
GoPro is doing anything but fine. As of July 2015 the stock price was around $60/share. Today it's around $9/share. The company is losing money every quarter. It's not just Xiaomi that is hurting them. Nikon, Ricoh, everybody either has an action cam for sale or has one in the works. The action cam market is real and viable and there's a ton of competition now. Unless GoPro can diversify into different products of the market and/or really make their next camera vastly superior over everyone else, they are toast. You can't lose money every quarter and stay in business.
I actually bought one of these in rose gold, and am super happy. After owning multiple GoPro models, it's nice to see some pressure put in gopro to up their game and maybe bring cost down a bit. Also, great review! however I don't share your opinion on the stabilization. I find it VERY effective. I've compared some situations with my Hero 3 and its night and day.

How long and how many times have you used it? I want to get one, but I have read some negative reviews about it. I have read a few reviews by some buyers on Amazon complaining about the camera not working anymore after just a few times of being used.

I have a mi 4c from xiaomi and i love it! It's amazing how xiaomi is able to make such good products with nice build quality and yet the price is lower than the other gadgets from other companies.
I've been importing cheap Chinese 4k action cams for 18 months and it isn't only price that goes against the gopro. Some of these cams come with up to 20 extra pieces of gear! As far as image quality, I can't go past the value of these alternatives! Great video man! Enjoyed it!
You hit it spot on... there are a TON of other action cams for a much cheaper price, but the image quality is always sub-par. This was one of the first to nail the quality AND price.
+AuthenTech - Ben Schmanke a lot of these cheaper cams have webcam capabilities. Something I find strange GoPro doesn't support, especially considering this feature would cost nothing to include.
don't know when this was put out, but gopro has the gopro 5 now and it is waterproof without the case, which makes great sense when you consider the case makes sound system sound a little muffled. without the case , it should fix that muffled sound you get with even older gopro cameras.it also has sound activation which I don't think any other camera on the scene offers at this point.

I use Yi 4k since a year. waterproof housing and 3 additional batteries cost me silly money in comparison with GoPro. after my experience I have to say that there is no way that anytime in the future I will consider GoPro. the only thing that GoPro does better is marketing. What surprised me the most in Yi is, while using the medium angle of view, this camera capability to straighten the lines so there is no sign of distortion, and lines are as straight as they can get.

What does this mode do? Is the pictures any better on this mode or is it a way to reduce consumption of storage space? 4) I used to have a Canon Vixia HF200 and output files of the videos where on AVCHD mode, which I hated because then I have to sit there and convert them to mp4. What is the output file format of this camera? 5) You mentioned that the Yi does well against Go Pro but does Yi have the software and customer support that comes with a Go Pro? The new Yi is super awesome, but the accesories you showed right there are not original Xiaomi ones, so you can't compare them to the Copro ones, which are actually manufactured by gopro. Still even with OEM parts it would probably alot cheaper.
Thanks for that useful review. The thing that I want most is an action camera WITHOUT a fish eye. You can get very wide lenses that don't bend up the horizon so much. (Something like what's on the phantom 4) That's what I'm waiting for.
One thing I didn't cover, it has a sweet "Lens Distortion Correction mode: 100% of the wide-angle lens distortion correction." It actually has exactly what you're looking for! When I've tried it, it works great

I really liked your review on the Yi4K. I just ordered the Olympus TG-Tracker not knowing first hand about the Yi. I haven't received it as yet, and watching some video reviews it doesn't appear to have the IQ of some of it's competitors, but what it does have is 5-axis IS, and for me that is paramount. A couple of questions: Have you had a look at the TG-Tracker, and do you know if there is, or will be a firmware update on the Yi4K to improve IS? Thank you Ben?

That's a good comment, and you're correct, I didn't compare photo mode. I guess for me personally, I *never* take still photos (unless time lapse) with my action cams, only video. (With 4K video, you can grab still frames and almost count it as a photograph ;)
I'm trying to find something that less cost than gopro and I found this.. but in youtube there is no vid that showing me "taking a pict" so I wonder if xiaomi yi is able to take a picture or not? Excluding a result from grab a moment from vid. Thanks! :)
I got one and it can actually take a picture, it's not bad at all ! Very good cam, really nice to use and the screen is very useful. Reactive and smooth, the battery life is nothing to do with a gopro, i just turned on mine after may be 1 month of 'sleep' and it's still full.
On gearbest website's Customer FAQ, they say battery is built in and not removable but you have obviously been able to remove the battery on the video. I also saw on different websites that the battery is non-removable. So what is the deal?
The Gopro has the ability for adding an external microphone. Good for motovlogging, I choose gopro for my primary Camera and in the future I will buy the new yi cam 4K for Secondary footage. I love the gyroscope stabilizer(video stabilization) on that Yi cam 4K.

@Kalyptic is right, thanks for the answers! The YI 2 audio is better than the gopro with its dual mics, however as anything stuffed inside a waterproof case, audio won't be great. It sounds pretty muffled, but you can still hear things quietly.

Regarding latency test, that looked pretty fast but it's hard to tell exactly what it is. Can you film a fast clock (you can use a smartphone stopwatch app) and compare the latency of the actual clock and the clock that shows up on the Wi-Fi preview on the phone?
Do you know why Amazon only sells the US version? I think this is the International Version, right? I'd say this is the one to buy, especially since it has the wide angle lens...

Agreed. You should have used the 'Flat' setting on the Yi if you want a true comparison... or set the gopro to use full colour.
