    I love your videos. You are so kind to produce these and share them freely. If I may make one suggestion for improvement. A few words that you use are difficult to understand because of the way you pronounce them. For clarity I turned on the captions. Sadly, the captions must have been made by some automatic program because it too has had difficulty trying to understand and it has put the wrong words in.
    As an example;
    at 0:20 you say "the axle's gas produced by the engine"
    The captions read: "the axle gay ass . . . ."
    at 1:15 you say "boats airplanes and cars" and the captions read: "boots airplanes and cost"
    You will improve your videos greatly by taking the time to manually type in your captions to show the correct words. In this way, the occasional word that is misunderstood in the narration will be cleared up and the video will not be spoiled.
    (oops got cut off before I ended here)
    But like I said, Great video, great illustrations and generous soul for sharing your knowledge and time - thank you.

    They both do the same function, but a supercharger takes the power to rotate from a belt connecting it to the engine, while exhaust air rotates the turbocharger, hence, they supercharger is effective at all RPM while the turbo needs a bit high RPMs, consequently, turbo lag exists.

      Nathan Gray Care to explain?

    • @Budoo6
      @Budoo6 9 років тому

      Supercharger is a crank. Turbo forces air into the engine...which could fuck up everything if you OVER DO IT.

    • @DMStraylight
      @DMStraylight 9 років тому +5

      Nathan Gray Not quite... both mechanical superchargers and turbochargers (originally called turbosuperchargers) serve the same function: to increase the amount of air fed to the engine and thereby increase horsepower, but they go about it different ways. As explained in the video, a turbocharger uses the vehicle's exhaust gasses to spin the compressor turbine, while a supercharger's turbine is mechanically attached to the engine via a belt, chain or crank.
      Both have advantages and drawbacks. Turbochargers take time to spin up to operating speeds, creating the phenomenon of "turbo lag". While superchargers don't have this problem (their turbine speed is always directly proportional to engine RPM), but the additional energy needed to spin the compressor turbine creates a parasitic drag on the engine's horsepower output.
      Either method (any plenty of other things besides) can damage an engine if done improperly, but most engines can be turbocharged or supercharged for a moderate power increase without risk, and indeed, more manufacturers are turning to turbochargers as a cheap, efficient way of making power in small-displacement engines straight off the factory floor (see: Subaru, Ford Eco-Boost, etc.). Thanks to the small displacement of these new generation of turbochargers and efficient exhaust routing and engine mapping, modern turbos spool up to full speed very quickly and suffer very little lag.
      Thanks to the increased air in the engine producing a cleaner, more complete burn of the fuel, turbochargers are also being used by manufacturers to lower emissions and improve fuel efficiency in order to meet increasingly-strict mandates on both fronts.
      Why would you want a turbocharger? Well, aside from more power to go faster, forced induction can also be used to compensate for the power deficit at high altitude. Obviously this is a very common application in radial- or inline-engine aircraft, but it's equally applicable for people who live up in the mountains. Your naturally aspirated engine might make its listed 200 horsepower on the California coast... but in Denver it's probably only making about 170.

    • @Budoo6
      @Budoo6 9 років тому

      Could a turbocharger get better Gas Mileage if you baby it? Or no?
      If you can't make up your mind get a twin charger 😈 but you would have to get racing fuel😔

    So based on the animation, the turbocharger acts on air that has already been in the combustion chamber??

    • @cc2x4
      @cc2x4 4 роки тому +3

      Watch at 2:30. The exhaust gas drives the turbine and goes out the exhaust while the inlet on the turbo draws fresh air that goes i to the angine

    Great video. I don't know squat about engines or how they work, but now I understand how a turbocharger works.

    "Consequently" ,when you say "consequently", it makes me think "SHUTUP BEEVIS" and then "consequently" puts me in a bad mood, "consequently" ruining my day. "Consequently", when my day is ruined, I "Consequently" put others in a bad mood also ("Consequently" making others mad at me). "Consequently" I think those people are just jealous, "Consequently" making me feel AWESOME ("Consequently")

    A very nice video indeed but one small point. The wastegate does not open because the engine is producing too much exhaust gas. It opens because the inlet boost pressure is too high. The wastegate itself is opened by a wastegate actuator that is connected by a pipe to the inlet manifold. When boost pressure is too high the pressure opens the wastegate to allow some of the exhaust gas to bypass the turbine. This causes the turbine and compressor to turn more slowly so the inlet boost pressure is reduced. When the inlet boost pressure drops, the wastegate actuator allows the wastegate to close again and the turbine then speeds up again.
