but on petrol its not like that, you gotta compensate with the fuel to match up with the density of air to avoid running too lean, so morr power still more fuel but its worth it
Turbocharged cars are more fuel thirsty than NA. You still had to exchange more fuel for more power together with the forced induction. But overall TC car gives you a different fun experience than NAs.
That right, Turbocharger with same engine type and capacity would require more fuel for more power. But the fuel consumption / horse power for turbocharger usually little bit lower than naturally aspirated engine because its more efficient

Great video thank you. It’s hard to make an engine animation and explain it simple enough for everyone to understand but not too simple and leave things out. Great job.
so is it good to put rockwool tape on the pipes for the cold air intake? so it doesn't get that warm till it gets to where it gotta be? specially considering how hot the it gets under the hood? and where else is it recommended to put it to help it work better? surrounding the turbo or what
I believe that heat insulation for intake pipe is not necessary because the intake air temperature rise because of that is not significant. The intercooler cooling improvement is the better way to reduce intake air temperature.
The purpose of heat insulation is to reduce heat transfer. If you want to reduce heat radiation from turbo and downpipe to surrounding area. You can add heat insulation. I have already seen this at industrial diesel engine.
Turbos are cooled and lubricated the same way the vehicles engines are. Motor oil just doesn’t lubricate engines it also helps cool the engine. How you might be asking? Because a well lubricated engine lowers the resistance of the moving parts compared to a poorly lubricated engine. And that is the reason why engines have gone from using 10w40 conventional motor oil back in the 70’s to using 0w20 synthetic motor oil in today’s new cars. Thinner oil lessons the moving parts resistance which increases your MPG. The inter cooler simply cools the hot exhaust gas used to spool the turbo before it is forced into the combustion chamber. A gasoline engine is another word for an air pump and you can pump more air and fuel into the combustion chamber when the air is 80 degrees then you can if the air is 150 degrees. So the best maintenance for a turbo is the best maintenance for your engine and that is oil changes, oil changes and oil changes!
So the turbo compressor.Gets air through an air filter then coolers it through the inter cooler. And the into. The intake manifold to the cilinders. There are no other gates for air to enter the engine right?
@@temmycandrawijaya how does engine start if exchaust isn’t spinning the tubing cause there is no air to start the combustion.Does air still flow into the engine through the turbocompressor tubes even when not spinning.so not forced induction air.
Initially, the intake air flows between the turbocharger gap to the combustion chamber naturally. When the combustion occur and exhaust gas has enough pressure. The turbocharger start working
Excellent just wanted to know if these systems use density controllers like turbocharged airplanes because, in high altitudes like in Colorado, the air is already less dense.
The video only show about general automotive engine, piston type aircraft engine is also have turbochargers. Some automotive turbocharges has a waste gate for excess pressure control after turbocharger output.
@abbasmuhsen2715 turbocharger cooling system using engine oil circulation, as far as I know, there is no bypass like engine water cooling that need engine to run hot enough. Thankyou for your question
I want to T off my boost pipe and route through a 2nd intercooler, back into the turbo, essentially compunding the turbo? It is top mount already. Would it work? Looking for more induction noise. 3.0l diesel. Holden Rodeo
You better consult with turbocharger specialist workshop because any modification to increase the turbocharger pressure will improve the amount of air to combustion chamber. It must consider engine design, compression ratio, engine control and other factor.
One question. In the first iteration of the cycle, does the air pass through the turbo's compressor (ergo, gets compressed) with the same compression ratio as the cylinder (ideally speaking)?
The compression ratio is volumetric comparison between the lowest and highest piston level and the air is being compressed. And the peak cylinder presssure at 200-300 Psi, if we compare it to the atmosferic pressure of 15 psi for a non turbocharger engine. the pressure is increased 12-20 times. The turbocharger pressure typically 6-10 Psi more than atmosferic pressure. The pressure increase is only 1, 4 to 1,7 times.
@@temmycandrawijaya thank you! So in the first interation, the air would get slightly compressed by the compressor (even though the turbine hasn't received any exhaust gases yet), pass through the intercooler and then enter the cylinder, OR would the cylinder's vacuum suck some air whitout compression, process it and then give it to the turbine's turbo so it gives power to its compressor which would finally start compressing?
When starting an engine with turbocharger, at the very first second, the turbocharger still steady or rotate slowly. The intake air still able to reach the combustion chamber by the vacuum pressure itself. When the combustion happens, the exhaust gas have enough energy to turn the turbine and turbocharger start functioning.
Turbocharger add more air to combustion chamber. To create bigger power, more fuel is also added. Turbocharger factor to afr is not significant. The engine power output factor is more significant to afr.
I have VW Polo 6r with 1.2 TSI engine. 2014. Turbocharged withn intercooler system. Made in Germany. Polo is hatchback. No't sport car, high end SUV, but middle city car. This system is also used by some older vehicles. Greetings from Europe.
Nowadays, more car is installed with turbocharger for technology and efficiency. With small displacement engine, we will get engine peak power comparable to bigger displacement engine. But In a daily use, small engine is more economical to operate that bigger ones. But we must pay more price for small turbocharged engine than a bigger naturally aspirated engine
Air cooling system put more weight and more air drag. In the automotive application, these drawbacks are not a problem. But for the jet engine, weight and air drag are big problems. Additional power by cooling the intake air in a jet engine will also increase weight and increase air intake drag. These have more disadvantages than the advantage of more thrust output from a jet engine.
Well, since turbos isn't new to the industry the current explanation of how they work being explained is important to understand to the general public as many vehicles are being supplied with their vehicles. Perhaps a video on how to maintain a turbo in optimon condition may help. 👍
Brother I've a question that why we experience some sort of Increase in Boost while starting the Engine for the very first time in Turbocharger Engines ? Is it due to the Turbo lag or why we use waste gate to reduce this lag , please bro I've this doubt from so long , help me out :( Btw your Animation and Teaching work is very appreciable 🤗 thanks for this video :)
Turbo lag is a lag between engine rpm increase and turbocharger rpm increase because turbocharger work using exhaust gas. The turbocharger speed will increase if exhaust gas flow is increase. Turbo lag is notice when engine rpm is low because turbocharger rpm also low. To address this, turbocharger compressor is designed to have more rpm at low engine rpm. The drawback is the turbocharger pressure will be very high at high rpm. Waste gate is used to by pass exhaust gas to turbocharger at high rpm. So the turbocharger rpm is not overspeed and turbocharger presssure is still in range
amazing video!! great job!! question: are there common maintenance points to do for the intercooler and turbo? how do i know if i should replace the turbo early rather than wait for failure? i am looking at used turbo charged cars, but am scared about if the oil was changed properly, how long the turbo and intercooler will last etc.
Turbocharger rarely to fail and replaced but the common turbocharger failure is the oil leakage . If the oil leakage not repaired early, there will be overheating and maybe jam.
You never know until you take one out to see. Usually you will know from the sound it produces during spooling. By the time you head loud howling when accelerating, it means it is time to replace it. Usually if you set up your excess boost to be vented out through BOV or have it reused with a recirculation, those will not cause damage to the turbo. You can however deliberately damage a Turbo by boosting over the limit or by using a set up that produces compression surge which the sound is very cool. The stutututu sound.
