- Turbo is one of the most exciting words in the world of cars. Twin turbo, bi turbo, big turbo, twin scroll. Turbos make cars more efficient, faster and they make awesome blow off valve noises. How do they work? What is boost? What is the difference between twin turbo and bi turbo? What are the benefits and disadvantages of each?
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

I will be honest, I like lag. Whenever you stomp on the accelerator it starts to goes then it's just throws you in your seat and I love that. No lag is good for pure performance but I prefer a few second before it final kicks in just for that suspense and thrill before the boost kicks in.
I agree
Race car drivers (like for those monstrously powerful 1980's turbo F1 cars) just anticipated the lag into their driving technique; they'd hold the throttle while braking on corners to keep pressure up so they wouldn't have any lag at the exit.
couldn't they have just depressed the clutch and shifted at desired RPM @@romanval69
When your waiting for your lag to be over the other car next to you that your racing has his motor and turbo or turbos dialed in and his has hardly any lag smokes u in a roll start! Don’t get me wrong when the lag is over it’s cool when u see your passengers face
I can’t drive cuz I’m only 14, but I got to ride in my dad’s friend’s 2015 STi. And holy crap that was fun! We were merging on the highway and he kicked the rpms up to about 5000 and I felt like I was gonna go thru the seat lol

To much work, will just add flaming stickers for more horsepower
Nah, play some Eurobeat while driving.
Why not both?
LOL
Many people don't get how stickers work. They actually multyply the power of the engine at all rpm and conditions, so if your engine has more power and you have stickers worth of 50% power increse, you will make more use of them by having a more powerful engine. That's why race cars have both powerful engines and stickers.

(For example at 4:46)
do a video explaining the different aspirations of an engine (i.e turbocharging, supercharging, and natural aspiration) and the difference between them. i have a friend who still cant get the concept of engine aspiration.
In a normal naturally aspirated engine the air is sucked in like a vacuum from the piston going down during the intake stroke. Only so much air can be sucked in this way. The only way to get more air in is to force it in instead of letting it get sucked in. Turbochargers and superchargers do the same exact thing. They force air into the combustion chamber. It's just the way they do it is different. Obviously he explained turbo in this video. A supercharger does not use the exhaust to spin it. It's actually connected just like your air conditioner and alternator and spins from a belt so there is no lag because you don't have to wait for the exhaust to spin it. You get instant power, no lag.
@@mawage666 an explanation isn't the prob my friend. I understand it but my friend doesn't.
Nim from what i understand. Superchargers are prone to belt slips among other things. Don’t know much about it myself but I feel that’s what im going to get.
@Nim superchargers rob hp from the engine to pull the belt to spin it, then the supercharger gives back the hp plus a little more. whilst a turbo takes longer, it uses exhaust gasses to power it. plus turbos are a little bit more tune able then super chargers
Im loving the editing of the video and how you make the explanation so detailed, fun and easy to follow

When I was an apprentice at VW, I got the chance to try to fix a broken variable geometry turbo, which was very interesting.
You should have explained about those turbos too :D
Loved the video!
so basically turbo have nothing to do with ecu? if so, how the fuel ration is calculated?
Most cars that are boosted use a speed density tune. A map and temp sensor is used to know the pressure and temperature in the intake. The ecu uses the data from those sensors combined with the rpm of the engine and its volumetric efficiency to figure out the proper amount of fuel.
Donut basically just covered your entire high school physics class.
Like I'm saying...my physics classes just suck it has no taste and the professor is so boring this man makes me want to learn cause he continuously makes stupid jokes😂😂😂
