What if, with the portal gun equipped to the hook slot, when you held down the hook key you would temporarily switch to the portal gun, like how you can hold down a key to temp swap to a torch, pick, or axe?

Well, anything but grinding potion ingredients lol. I did use them when I got them from the angler though. It might actually take longer to farm the potions than to just fish normally during that time, depending on how unlucky you are with the crate RNG.

It wouldn't hurt to snatch an ebonkoi or two for some wrath potions would it? or is it not worth it for 10% damage boost. Buffs are really important, but truly, out of all of this, the true important thing is to not make it all the way to lunatic cultist without decent progression, and unless you're some kind of veteran, I would really recommend refraining from expert mode unless you want to go farm for buffs every few bosses and spend the time to get things you wouldn't usually get. Defeating the mechs is a crucial step in progression, true Excalibur usually carries you through plantera and then the terra blade is really good. Melee is really the only class i've used past the mechs, but i would like to try ranger or mage. You are truly more skilled than me, but you seem to care more about content than letting yourself get really involved in the game
The whole reason I don't play Expert is because you have to do all that boring potion grinding, enemy farming, and other menial tasks. Classic lets you run through the game without doing any of that, which is better suited to playing the game over and over for challenge playthroughs, in my experience. If I was playing Terraria once a year, I'd play Expert to get a more involved playthrough, but when I'm playing it every couple weeks, there's no reason to do all that grinding and slow progression every time.

The celestial magnet is pretty rare, sadly. Even during long playthroughs you may not get one. I wish they'd make it easier to acquire, considering you can craft three different accessories from it.
I don't remember the rainbow gun being all that bad lol, you should definitely try it. It will definitely destroy golem (not that that's a huge accomplishment)
Imo it's also quite good for Old One's Army if you plan on doing that afterwards (Betsy's Wrath is worth a try, it has good damage and inflicts a debuff that lowers enemy defence by 40)
Honestly Rainbow Gun is just great in general, it tends to keep spawns in a knockback loop and is fairly good at triggering the Spectre buff (which is pretty much THE Magic armour set)
I recommend using the rainbow rod, or at least trying it out. it has good damage and has good homing, and is worthy of killing Duke fishron in for the worthy mastermode

There are also wire-operable portal gun stations that really only get any use in custom maps. You can buy them from the Cyborg, but I think it would be cooler if you spawned some in early to get more time to mess around with them.
Cool idea for this challenge: make polished marble blocks or something visually similar and put them in your base where you shoot your portals! It'll be a neat homage to the actual portal games
The magic missile and other weapons like it, like the flare lash, home in on enemies when you let go of the mouse (as of 1.14) it's painful to watch you bring the missile to the enemies every time 🤣

If you're able to get terraspark boots without fishing, so basically not a small world, they're really good, at that point where everything IS in the world, the only real annoying part is the obsidian rose
Recommendation: Use the Better Portals Mod for TMod 1.4 Makes it so enemies and items and basically everything can go through portals. Kinda late on this one but I still strongly recommend porting the world to TMod for it.
10:02 I usually use it, it's a pretty fun support weapon, it can hit all three golem segments at once, and it stays there for a decent amount of time, (it also destroys the destroyer if you want to fight them with it for fun)

Something like obtaining it after the mechs or plantera/golem would be nice since you can already get portals from the steampunker
Build a huge strip of solid blocks across the very top or near the top of the world that goes across it in it's entirety. It'll allow you to fire your portal gun up and teleport high into the sky whenever you'd like and wherever you are in the surface. Would be very useful for something like moon lord (I think) and also just very good for traveling and avoiding enemies in general. Also try using a jousting lance. Throwing yourself around at high speed seems easy for you
And those blocks should be the ice gel blocks, can treat it like the gel from the game! you don't lose your speed on them either, once I found out about them I always build my underground bridge with them. Can also skip one block at a time to save on blocks!
@@Goremize i think the idea was more a solid layer of any block so you can teleport to the bottom of it at any time (and escape from whatever you're fighting on the surface). but that seems really good too, a second layer of ice slime would be great!
years late but id like to point out that the Meteor Staff's best usage case, in my experience, is to speed up invasions or get more kills during events. if youre gonna hide in a wimp hole while the pirates or solar eclipse are going on, the meteors can help ensure you can constantly be dealing damage, more than a lava trap would. letting you defeat a flying dutchman from the safety of a panic room is worth the investment assuming you have the mana. the high mana cost isn't even a big problem because you have plenty of time to sit there and let it recharge (and will probably have to switch weapons whenever a pirates curse or reaper shows up)
When I couldn’t find something in a world, I would just make a new world dedicated to finding it. One time I did this, and the world got the random name “dimension of forgery,” which was just perfect for the cause it was made

If you think your lava charm luck is bad, you should see mine. It was impossibly horrible. I caught well over 100 crates. I had nearly a stack of obsidifish to make seafood dinners with for the rest of the game. It was my first master mode play through, started the day 1.4 dropped, so I really wanted to get the fancy new boots they added. I didn’t expect 20% of my final playtime to be fishing. Didn’t help that I had equally horrible luck with the crystal serpent since I also did mage that run
Yeah, I want to like Terraria but the fun items are so rng or grind dependant and I'm not willing to farm hours for something that makes the game more enjoyable. Farming kills the fun in Terraria. Even the portal gun. It's super fun to play around with, but there is no reason to use it when you already defeated all the bosses.
I’ll be honest, really like the fishing montages mainly because whenever I return to terraria once per year I always get the golden rod from the angler lol. It’s like part of the checklist now

I was kinda surprised when I found out that so many people hated fishing in Terraria. I have never seen someone who is neutral about fishing, they either love it or hate it
Rainbow gun is amazing to use as a tool of crowd control in invasions and events, especially old one's army, and when you explore the post-plantera dungeon, especially paired with a magnetic sphere spellbook and an actual magic weapon like the spectre staff. It is, however, piss useless in any bossfights (aside from maybe destroying some fishron bubbles as they're flying towards you but that's the only time i found a use for it). And before anyone asks, no I never tried it in the pillar events because that one everscream weapon has amazing dps even if it can't pierce, and you get the nebula blaze right after one pillar anyways and it's even more amazing (data from an expert mode 2p playthrough)
The Rainbow Gun can be good as a set and forget type weapon for some passive damage to run bosses through much like the storm rod clouds, it's also VERY handy if you need to farm in the dungeon for any reason, works well for some of the invasion events as well, just gotta shoot it at the best arc (as straight a line as possible for as far as possible if on flat terrain) for the terrain to ensure enemies remain in the rainbow for as long as possible, also stun locks normal mobs pretty well hence its usefulness in the dungeon.
I absolutely love this playthrough! It’s the little things that you add, such as making your base around portal tricks, that make you my favorite channel. Keep up the good work!
I was under the impression lava fishing just wasn’t possible without lavaproof stuff. However, if I’m not mistaken, it’s lavaproof hook OR hell bait, so you can buy a bug net from the merchant, upgrade it with hell bars so it can catch hell bait, then as long as you’re using the right bait you should have reasonable lava fishing times. I always used lava bait in order to get my first fireproof hook.

Ah, I love the magical harp. Its always my go to weapon for destroyer, infinite pierce and goes in a straight line, hits every single segment. Makes the fight even on expert go really fast. :)
I always play on large worlds, which probably explains this, but I never knew that there could be items that simply _don't spawn_ in chests. Never even crossed my mind. Kind of makes specific terraria moments for me make sense now.
Me and my buddies have also been fishing for a lava charm, and after several days without any luck, somebody found 3 in another world while looking for an imp statue to get obsidian roses. We went ~2200 statue imps dry for a rose, then got 4 all in quick succession. I think the point I was trying to make was that fishing for lava charms sucks noodles.
Personally I like the rainbow gun, but only against events. Its kind of like a magic sentry; you shoot it out, it does passive damage for a time, disappears, then you re summon it. Pair it with a nimbus rod and clinger staff and nothing can exit the portals in old ones army lmao
Tried this playtrough with my friends, on FTW Mastermode, and lemme tell you, it is the best thing ever Yeeting your friends into the sky/lava pit is just perfect

I realized many of the items in terraria you can get from fishing. so i have a playthrough idea. you can only use items you can get from fishing, as in you can only use it if it CAN be obtained from fishing you don't actually have to get it from fishing (i.e. chests and drops) because that would be hell. also i guess angler quests and duke fishron drops count
I love using Sky Fracture. It’s base crit is really high, which also combos with nimbus rod because the nimbus rod’s crit rate is based on the crit of the weapon you are holding
Last week my little brother started a terraria world and I told him master mode is the easiest if you put in “For the Worthy” as the seed. He has 12 hours on the world and just got cactus armor
Also 100% recommend mana regeneration potions, and not bothering with the mana flower. I used to love the flower, but since they added mana sickness, and I discovered how good the mana regen potions are, I've never touched it again. I pretty much only play mage x-x
Rainbow gun is a surprisingly absurd support weapon, used it in expert mode mage and it obliterates most events and helps a little against the pillars, its actually good now combined with spectre armor
I know your in the middle of a series right now but the next terraria series should be another play on the world size thing. but this time the world should be only horizontal and like 5 blocks high. I think that would be a fun and difficult challenge
MY DUDE. As a mage main. Hex Doll is the goat early hardmode, as is flamelash (it auto homes if you just spam left click). Life Drain from crimson mimics is stupidly funny but you unfortunately don’t have a natural crimson in this world. Then they sort of Peter out till the end where you can get the laser chain gun, arm blaster laser, and typhoon blade
WoS: literally places tons of planter boxes as boss arena Also WoS: will not plant a single potion ingredient even if it would save so much time Can’t believe you did that crate grind with no Crate/Sonar Potions. It’s no wonder you hate fishing so much. 😆
Terraspark boots are much easier to get if you just do the fishing quests. Just do one every once in awhile and it adds up so when you do need to fish it’s quick.
when using the pink ice block (pretty sure there was a blue varient too) u can use portals to fall really fast into a portal then when sliding onto the ice block u dont loose any speed allowing u to go insanely fast, and if there is a portal at the end and start u can just go like 80mph forever, tis may have varing use on bosses, but could be really cool when using the portal gun cannon thing the cyborg sells (im pretty sure thats post ml tho );
Some advice for making your mage playthroughs smoother in the future: tl;dr: Use more spells, Crystal Storm is good, Orichalcum/Forbidden>Titanuim, Wear both Spectre hood and mask and swap when needed, Waterbolt OP You've been limiting yourself with your spell selection. The mage class has an unmatched selection of different debuffs it can apply through spells, and you'll find much better results if you switch between a variety of status-inflicting spells; cursed flames, shadowflame, ichor, frostflame, poison, basically as many stacking debuffs as you can get. As for early hardmode damage spells, the Crystal Storm is really good, especially when combined with Golden Shower. That combo absolutely melts through pretty much anything. As for armour, I find that the reworked Titanuim set isn't as good as Orichalcum. It does provide more stats, but as a mage you'll want to stay further back, and those shards rarely come into play. I suppose without wings you'll find use for them more often, but the orichalcum petals add a lot of damage. If you do want the higher stats, the Forbidden armour is not bad. It doesn't boost your mana, but it does give a very nice boost to both magic and summoner, so I sometimes dip into that when playing mage. Hallowed Armour is really good too, and works as a nice transition to spectre. Personally I like the chlorophyte armour more, but mining chlorophyte for multiple sets of armour is just euch. Speaking of the Spectre armour, there's a cool trick you can do that lets you make use of both set bonuses: if you wear the mask normally and the hood in social slot, you can quickly swap between them when needed. Usually not needed in normal mode, but it is an absolute blessing in expert and master to be able to swap between healing and DPS on the go. I also saw you not making proper use of the Magic Missile spell. The way you're using it is how it used to work, where it follows your cursor. It can still be used like that, but after it was reworked in 1.4, the projectiles will home in on enemies, so you can just spam click and the projectiles will usually hit. This means it's actually a viable DPS weapon, but the Waterbolt is still the best pre-hardmode spell for prety much every situation, unless you're up against armored enemies, in which case the fire flower is good.
You should paint everything you build white (or build with white blocks but it would be hard to replace each block now) so it actually fits the theme of Portal.

I feel like it does get a bit held back by piercing i-frames, since a lot of magic weapons are piercing as well.

If you think your lava charm luck is bad, you should see mine. It was impossibly horrible. I caught well over 100 crates. I had nearly a stack of obsidifish to make seafood dinners with for the rest of the game. It was my first master mode play through, started the day 1.4 dropped, so I really wanted to get the fancy new boots they added. I didn’t expect 20% of my final playtime to be fishing. Didn’t help that I had equally horrible luck with the crystal serpent since I also did mage that run
Yeah, I want to like Terraria but the fun items are so rng or grind dependant and I'm not willing to farm hours for something that makes the game more enjoyable. Farming kills the fun in Terraria. Even the portal gun. It's super fun to play around with, but there is no reason to use it when you already defeated all the bosses.

After recently playing a mage, the spirit flame is able to carry you through the mech bosses. The rainbow rod is also very good too

I was kinda surprised when I found out that so many people hated fishing in Terraria. I have never seen someone who is neutral about fishing, they either love it or hate it
Rainbow gun is amazing to use as a tool of crowd control in invasions and events, especially old one's army, and when you explore the post-plantera dungeon, especially paired with a magnetic sphere spellbook and an actual magic weapon like the spectre staff. It is, however, piss useless in any bossfights (aside from maybe destroying some fishron bubbles as they're flying towards you but that's the only time i found a use for it). And before anyone asks, no I never tried it in the pillar events because that one everscream weapon has amazing dps even if it can't pierce, and you get the nebula blaze right after one pillar anyways and it's even more amazing

I didn't notice the Crate or Sonar potion being used, I only noticed the Fishing Potion active. Those would have saved so much time!
The Rainbow Gun can be good as a set and forget type weapon for some passive damage to run bosses through much like the storm rod clouds, it's also VERY handy if you need to farm in the dungeon for any reason, works well for some of the invasion events as well, just gotta shoot it at the best arc (as straight a line as possible for as far as possible if on flat terrain) for the terrain to ensure enemies remain in the rainbow for as long as possible, also stun locks normal mobs pretty well hence its usefulness in the dungeon.
I absolutely love this playthrough! It’s the little things that you add, such as making your base around portal tricks, that make you my favorite channel. Keep up the good work!

I was under the impression lava fishing just wasn’t possible without lavaproof stuff.
However, if I’m not mistaken, it’s lavaproof hook OR hell bait, so you can buy a bug net from the merchant, upgrade it with hell bars so it can catch hell bait, then as long as you’re using the right bait you should have reasonable lava fishing times. I always used lava bait in order to get my first fireproof hook.

I always play on large worlds, which probably explains this, but I never knew that there could be items that simply _don't spawn_ in chests. Never even crossed my mind. Kind of makes specific terraria moments for me make sense now.
Again with this dedication to do things right. All of that fishing would have killed me. At least the fishing spot looked nicer over time.

Me and my buddies have also been fishing for a lava charm, and after several days without any luck, somebody found 3 in another world while looking for an imp statue to get obsidian roses. We went ~2200 statue imps dry for a rose, then got 4 all in quick succession. I think the point I was trying to make was that fishing for lava charms sucks noodles.
Personally I like the rainbow gun, but only against events. Its kind of like a magic sentry; you shoot it out, it does passive damage for a time, disappears, then you re summon it. Pair it with a nimbus rod and clinger staff and nothing can exit the portals in old ones army lmao

Build a huge strip of solid blocks across the very top or near the top of the world that goes across it in it's entirety. It'll allow you to fire your portal gun up and teleport high into the sky whenever you'd like and wherever you are in the surface. Would be very useful for something like moon lord (I think) and also just very good for traveling and avoiding enemies in general.
Also try using a jousting lance. Throwing yourself around at high speed seems easy for you
I realized many of the items in terraria you can get from fishing. so i have a playthrough idea. you can only use items you can get from fishing, as in you can only use it if it CAN be obtained from fishing you don't actually have to get it from fishing (i.e. chests and drops) because that would be hell. also i guess angler quests and duke fishron drops count
I mean if you fished in hardmode and got full adamantite/titanium beating Duke pre-mech is definitely possible
I love using Sky Fracture. It’s base crit is really high, which also combos with nimbus rod because the nimbus rod’s crit rate is based on the crit of the weapon you are holding

sky fracture is quite good due to its 3 shots per 1 cast and its VERY high default crit chance of 24% (compared to 4% most weapons have)
Last week my little brother started a terraria world and I told him master mode is the easiest if you put in “For the Worthy” as the seed. He has 12 hours on the world and just got cactus armor

I've used the Sky Fracture on a few occasions, and it's main appeal for ne is the extra 20% crit chance when compared to the other magic weapons.

Also 100% recommend mana regeneration potions, and not bothering with the mana flower. I used to love the flower, but since they added mana sickness, and I discovered how good the mana regen potions are, I've never touched it again. I pretty much only play mage x-x
Rainbow gun is a surprisingly absurd support weapon, used it in expert mode mage and it obliterates most events and helps a little against the pillars, its actually good now combined with spectre armor

MY DUDE. As a mage main. Hex Doll is the goat early hardmode, as is flamelash (it auto homes if you just spam left click). Life Drain from crimson mimics is stupidly funny but you unfortunately don’t have a natural crimson in this world. Then they sort of Peter out till the end where you can get the laser chain gun, arm blaster laser, and typhoon blade
WoS: literally places tons of planter boxes as boss arena
Also WoS: will not plant a single potion ingredient even if it would save so much time

Terraspark boots are much easier to get if you just do the fishing quests. Just do one every once in awhile and it adds up so when you do need to fish it’s quick.

when using the pink ice block (pretty sure there was a blue varient too) u can use portals to fall really fast into a portal then when sliding onto the ice block u dont loose any speed allowing u to go insanely fast, and if there is a portal at the end and start u can just go like 80mph forever, tis may have varing use on bosses, but could be really cool when using the portal gun cannon thing the cyborg sells (im pretty sure thats post ml tho );
You really ought to use Fishing, Crate, and Sonar potions next time. They make the process of fishing for a specific frop much faster and smoothrr

Some advice for making your mage playthroughs smoother in the future:
tl;dr:
Use more spells, Crystal Storm is good, Orichalcum/Forbidden>Titanuim, Wear both Spectre hood and mask and swap when needed, Waterbolt OP
You've been limiting yourself with your spell selection. The mage class has an unmatched selection of different debuffs it can apply through spells, and you'll find much better results if you switch between a variety of status-inflicting spells; cursed flames, shadowflame, ichor, frostflame, poison, basically as many stacking debuffs as you can get. As for early hardmode damage spells, the Crystal Storm is really good, especially when combined with Golden Shower. That combo absolutely melts through pretty much anything.
As for armour, I find that the reworked Titanuim set isn't as good as Orichalcum. It does provide more stats, but as a mage you'll want to stay further back, and those shards rarely come into play. I suppose without wings you'll find use for them more often, but the orichalcum petals add a lot of damage. If you do want the higher stats, the Forbidden armour is not bad. It doesn't boost your mana, but it does give a very nice boost to both magic and summoner, so I sometimes dip into that when playing mage. Hallowed Armour is really good too, and works as a nice transition to spectre. Personally I like the chlorophyte armour more, but mining chlorophyte for multiple sets of armour is just euch.
Speaking of the Spectre armour, there's a cool trick you can do that lets you make use of both set bonuses: if you wear the mask normally and the hood in social slot, you can quickly swap between them when needed. Usually not needed in normal mode, but it is an absolute blessing in expert and master to be able to swap between healing and DPS on the go.
I also saw you not making proper use of the Magic Missile spell. The way you're using it is how it used to work, where it follows your cursor. It can still be used like that, but after it was reworked in 1.4, the projectiles will home in on enemies, so you can just spam click and the projectiles will usually hit. This means it's actually a viable DPS weapon, but the Waterbolt is still the best pre-hardmode spell for prety much every situation, unless you're up against armored enemies, in which case the fire flower is good.

@@DarkShard5728 the rng is directly impacted by rates, so it's not pure rng. I'm not exactly sure how rng works, but fishing isn't always bad, because you can always, and i mean ALWAYS improve your chances in fishing
