  • In the first in a serie of 'The Knife Files' I make a knife from a file, based on iconic designs around the world. Thefirst one now is based on the iconic WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife. I use 2 methods to shape my steel: the forge and my 2x72" belt grinder. This is my first attempt to make a knife using the 2x72, so it did not come out perfect. There are still some remnants of the file theeth visible and the peen at the but is massivly off centre. But other than that, I'm pretty happy with my attmept at a Fairbairn-sykes style knife.

This is awesome! Out of all of the things I've seen people make out of files this has to be the first one that I've seen made into a dagger. It looks awesome!

Thank you very much! I've wanted to do this project for quite some time now. Finally got around to do it, pretty happy with the result. ✌

    Question:
I am currently in the process of making a dagger of sorts but I'm struggling to work out how to fix a rounded wooden handle. I don't want to use glue (it seems like a tacky method) and I don't have anything to thread the tang either.
The tang is about 0.5 by 0.5cm and its square. Do you think I can I could simply drill a hole in the handle and hammer it onto the square tang securely without it splitting with pressure?
Also, could I somehow heat the tang, would this cause the metal to contract then swell or something to create a tighter hold?
Finally I wont be using a pummel of any sort on this dagger, just so you know (all just one handle).

      Oh, that looks interesting..

James Gordon I would do it justlike I did in this video: drill a hole in the handle that is a bit smallar than the tang and burn it on by heating up the tang (really hot) and push it in there. And finally fix it in place by peening over the end of the tang (make sure you have 5 mm or so sticking out of the handle) This is the old school way to do it and it works great! If you dont want to burn on the handle I would suggest a video by Paul Sellers, called 'fitting a chisel handle'. This way you can try to hammer it on tight, with nothing sticking out the other end. Just remember to take it slow!
Good luck and thanks for watching!

If you can find some epoxy or perhaps polyurethane glue (like gorilla glue) I personaly would add that, even though it can be messy.

+Robin Coomans Wow, thanks allot dude, that's been troubling me for ages. I've never heard of the 'peening' technique before, it really
sounds promising the same as the heat method.
Also, great video by the way, I didn't know you could make something out of that kind of metal file. I've really learned allot today.
