  • Hi everyone, my dad taught me this trick to make straight cuts and I thought I'd share it because it can also be used to make fullers. Sorry for not uploading as often, I'm currently very busy (exams...)
    Let me know what you think of the video !

      I've not tried this technique yet but I'll do it soon. It's easy enough and gives good results for people who own only an angle grinder and not a milling machine

    Well done , congratulations with this video . Hand cutting Fuller / Hi's is a necessary hand skill . Like CNC made swords or using a Milling machine for cutting a Fuller like most ABS smiths , so easy so fast ....... How these so called Journeyman and GURU Mastersmiths get certified , I don't know . But anything goes in Merica these days , so why not cheapen a craft with centuries of history and technical skills ..... Thank you from the bottom of my heart , there is hope !

    Hey man good video. I've actually been thinking how to do this myself. Had a similar idea. But to finish it off use some small diameter dowel rods and hand sand it for a good finish. Haven't tired it yet though.

    • @lamproknives
      @lamproknives  5 років тому +1

      You're right, wrapping some sandpaper around a small rod or some nail would be another way to clean these fullers, might take quite a bit of time 😂

    What kind of discs are those you are using to "clean" the fullers with? I have a katana with a pretty sloppily made fuller and i would like to clean mine up and maybe even extend it in both directions, getting the fuller closer to the handle and farther to the point. Any advice would be appreciated. Great video.

    • @lamproknives
      @lamproknives  4 роки тому

      The ends ? Hum.. with a smooth dremel disc, or you can use sandpaper around a drill bit or something round
      You won't be able to a very sharp end with this technic

    What about the wide fuller on a Viking sword? How would that be done?

    • @lamproknives
      @lamproknives  4 роки тому +2

      A scraper, a small wheel attachment on a belt grinder, or a stone on a surface grinder. But the method shown in the video probably isn't the best for that, the fuller won't be wide enough

  • @scottshobbyz5416
    @scottshobbyz5416 5 років тому +1

    Hey that looks like something even I could do. I would just have to find another way to polish it though as I don't have a dremel. I would have to practice on some mild steel first before I tried it on a knife though.

    • @lamproknives
      @lamproknives  5 років тому

      Yeah definitely practice on a few pieces before, it I still need to practice too.
      You can use some heavy sandpaper wrapped around some thin steel bar, or a nail or something

      For some reason your previous comment doesn't appear, even though I got the notification. So, I'm gonna answer to what I can see.
      First, do you really consider yourself "experienced" after 3 months of practice ? This is really a short amount of time, you must have done.. 10 to 30 knives ? Or at least 10 to 30 great knives, considering that it takes time to learn and make mistakes in the beginning. What I'm trying to say is that you're far from having seen every ways to make something, and you'll see people use tools in unexpected ways to acheive their goals. I've been making knives for more than 5 years now and I'm always surprised how ingenious people can be !
      I'm also wondering why you would watch a video knowing you won't like it, since you said you were commenting before seeing it ? And in the end, you can see it actually works. Maybe not the cleanest work ever, but a dremel and sandpaper could make it far more neat looking. I've done it on another knife on my channel if you want to see it on a finished product ;)
      Anyway, thanks for watching and I hope you'll gain something from my humble experience :D

      @@lamproknives i actually deleted the comment. I caught myself in the act being Jay, which in person it's very funny, but seeing that you can't see my exaggerated arm movements , facial features and my funny voice people don't see the fact that I'm actually mocking myself. Who in the Hell considers themselves experienced at any thing let alone knife making after two months! No one, but you can't tell if I'm being serious or stupid on the comments section like you can in real life. So I have to knock it off before i piss off the whole international knife making community. Probably get stabbed at a knife makers convention if i keep it up. " THERE HE IS! GET THAT SON OF A BITCH! Pas mal ta vidéo cher compatriote ! :D
    Par contre, ce n'est évidemment pas la technique "traditionnelle" (forgeage à chaud de la gouttière, ou retrait de matière par grattage).
    Pour ma part, je privilégie un travail plus "traditionnel", car je trouve que le côté manuel nous rapproche de la réalisation.
