I’m a pear shape but I actually like to accentuate my hips . I love that my hips are wider. In my culture we celebrate that.
Thanks for sharing a different perspective Jenniffer! It's so interesting how subjective style is.
@@EricaBallStyle indeed❤️
@@Simplelivingslowlivingsame i would love a video of clothes on how to accentuate our curves.
Same! ❤
Same. I'm West African and having wider hips is a part of our beauty standard; most women here are dramatic hourglass/pear shapes.
I’m pear shaped , and my every day wardrobe consists of high waisted skinny jeans, and like slightly oversized t shirts tucked in, I like men’s t shirts because the sleeves are longer, and men’s shirts tend to be thicker sturdier materials, so it’s just a better looking/feeling fit on my arms, but a comfy but feminine high waisted skinny Jean, maybe with a belt metal matching my earrings, and some vans, it’s comfy reliable, top notch, can be changed with jackets and hats and other accessories, but also my funny t shirt collection is a simple way to express myself :))
I love a great high-waisted pair of jeans too! My daily uniform is probably a tee and jeans with a pair of chic sneakers. You just can't go wrong.
This video and the information in it was SO helpful!
So happy to hear that Kelly Ann! ❤
As a pear one of my favourite tops is a white blouse with a big Lacy frlll all across the busy area and fluted sleeves
What about the fit-n-flair and a line dresses. They are perfect for the pear shape as long as you don't go overboard with the flair.
Thanks for your comment Vicki! I don't think those dress styles are good for the pear shape. They work great for the inverted triangle to balance the wider shoulders. For a pear though you are wider on the bottom so adding a style that has more fabric to that area gives the appearance of an even wider bottom. I think a more streamlined and tailored silhouette for the pear shape is more flattering. That said, if you are a pear shape and feel great in a-line dresses than go for it!
I agree I love an a line dress as long as it’s soft and flows and not the 50s style stick out ones.
Thank you for the video! I like how you are recommending less fabric at the hip area because usually stylists always say pear should not wear things close to the hips. I have been loving straight dresses and skirts this summer. Take care!
Yes. I’m a pear shaped woman and I tend to love the voluminous skirts because I think exaggerating the pear can be sexy- I also like to swish.
But I agree it’s a myth that pear shaped women HAVE to do that. No need to hide your shape if you don’t want to. Straight styles can be very flattering too.
Thanks for your comment Patricia! 😊

Loved all the examples with people wearing dos and don’ts
Thanks Mara 😊
this is so interesting. i've always gravitated toward fit and flare dresses and full skirts because my wider hips are so hard to fit with my waist size in a structured bottom. this video has me rethinking things - great set of examples
Thanks for your comment and for being open to a new way of looking at your clothes Elizabeth! I think so many of us try to "hide" our wider areas by wearing clothes that are bigger and more voluminous.
It is very helpful to see these styles on the same woman. It really emphasizes the point. Thanks.
I’m definitely not a pear but I love all these videos because it helps me rule out body types and I enjoy all your content 🦋🤗
Thank you so much Denise! I really try to take my experience and also spend hours doing research to try to make these videos helpful for women. 😊

Thank you, Erica 😊This is the best explanation of pear shape do’s and don’ts I’ve ever seen! You’ve helped me so much even in one video. The visuals were great. Today I bought a long silk dress for summer which has a lot of material on top ✅ but a fuller long skirt 😱 😂well…now I know !
Thank you so much for your comment! I'm grateful this video helped you ❤
Message received ‘extra fabric’ is my friend above my waist but not below! Thank you x
You are welcome Helen! x
The examples illustrated the principles well. For myself I can see using these principles sometimes but overall they seem to favor uncomfortable clothes that restrict free movement. Great for the red carpet but I need to be able to bend over or stoop down without being self conscious or uncomfortable. Would love to see how to apply these principles for an elementary school teacher for example. (I am retired with a casual lifestyle.)
Thanks for your comment Valerie. The key styling principles are the same whether you're wearing a comfortable casual outfit or a red carpet gown. Avoid extra fabric around the hips like pleats, ruffles, or pockets that stick out. Avoid your tops hitting at your hips (or widest point). Instead, opt for doing a French tuck or look for tops that hit above the hips. Accentuate/define your waist. Balance your hips with tops that have a sleeve. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions about dressing a pear shape.
I don’t know why it is full but full flouncy skirts are like cat nip to us pears, however I do agree the fitted skirts slim us down.
I love this analogy Jill 🤣
Another tactfully done critique on does and don'ts only body shape dressing 😊
Thanks so much Christine! I appreciate your comment 😊
Such a revelation!!! Where have you been?? Thank you! ❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much Stephannie ❤
Such a great video! May I ask what your advice would be for pear shapes who want to hide stomach area? I feel like fitted clothes tend to accentuate that area on me
Thank you! This is a video that may be helpful to you 👉ua-cam.com/video/QMG3MVTSDNc/v-deo.html Also, you want to think about clothing that has more structure to it. Meaning it's a heavier weight fabric than something thin like a jersey.
@@EricaBallStyle amazing, thank you so much Erica for your knowledge!

Great video! Your advice really resonates with me but I find that when I dress this way, it tends to feel too formal / dressed up for the occasion … I’m obv not a stylist. I noticed in your video, the less ‘flattering’ looks were casual, relaxed and the more ‘flattering’ ones were generally red carpet looks. I realize you can only get the photos you can get but do you have any advice for casual, every day looks (not sweats) for a pear? (Bonus points if it’s a 5ft 4in pear with a larger bust and, I believe, a minimal, androgynous, classic style) : )
Thanks for your comment Corinne! There are so many ways to style a pear that work and are casual. The key is to wear something more streamlined or tailored to the body on your bottom half. Avoiding extra fabric on the bottom like pleats, pockets that don't lay flat, or extra fabric. Accentuating your waist with a French or full tuck also helps break up the proportions. Hope that helps!
@@EricaBallStyle thank you!
@@corinnenapper6938 you're welcome Corinne 😊
I literally just realized this year pleated skirts and skirts that are too flowy make me look so wide even though this is often the advice given to pears.
Yes! Anywhere there is extra fabric like pleats, widens that area.
Great video, however I’ve always avoided tucking things in at the waist because although it looks great from the front, the side & back views are awful, showing a big belly & big bottom, especially in trousers! I’m mid 50’s, 5’2, not overweight but always had a big butt & bigger stomach. 😮 Any suggestions? Thanks
It all depends on the silhouette of the top and how much of a tuck you're doing. There is a bit of practice with the tuck.
Great video! I love all the visual references. I am a petite pear shape (5’2). You mention having a slimmer fit on bottom. Will a a boot cut or straight leg jean be better to balance hips or should I wear skinny all the way to the ankle to lengthen?
Thanks Tiffany! Great question. As a pear shape myself, I find skinny and slim straight styles work best. But a boot cut can also work if that's more your style but in any style I would look for the jeans to be more fitted along the thigh.

Got it 👍🏻 thank you so much for the quick reply! I’m looking forward to your next video 😊

Weird most advice says for pear shape, chooe loose fit pants like palazzos and culottes, and A line skirts that dont cling to the thighs and butt is more flattering .
I feel like all your advice is the opposite. Any thoughts on the polar opinion?
Thanks for your question Linsey! As a pear shape myself and after styling hundreds of women over the last 16 years, this is what I've found to be the most flattering on this shape. But fashion and style are subjective, so I think the most important thing is to wear what you feel best in. Regardless of what advice is out there. 😊
Yaaaaassss. I’m here for it
I would love to have your opinion on a pear shape that has thick legs and calves and ankles. I wear trousers a lot, but when summer comes, shorts and sandals make me look like i have tree trunks as legs...im not complaining...my legs are strong, i just want to look my best.
Thanks for your comment Annette! Nude sandals that are not too clunky and don't have ankle straps can help create the illusion of longer legs. Without working with you directly, it's hard to know exactly what would work. But, I think skirts that are streamlined and mid-calf length can work. Hope that helps!
I'm a plus size pear shape. Do you have some specific brands you recommend checking out?
Thanks for your question! There are no specific brands I recommend based on your shape but more on the style and silhouette of the items. I have a free brand guide that shares client favorite budget and luxe brands 👉ericaballstyle.com/best-clothing-brands/ Nordstrom online has many of these brands for plus-sized women as well. ❤
Great channel and video. New subbie 😊
Thank you! Glad you're here 😊
Wow
What is the best form of sleeveless? I can't do halter tops but I feel like tank styles are not flattering
Thanks for your question! It depends on several factors including the width of your shoulders, your arms, fabric choice, and your overall shape. If you're referring specifically to pear shapes most sleeveless top styles can work, especially ones with a wider strap to give the illusion of more width on the top half to balance the proportions of the bottom half. I recommend trying different sleeveless options and seeing what you feel best in. ❤
I've struggled to define my body shape because I have broad square shoulders, a small waist, and hips that are 2 inches smaller than my shoulders. However, I have a very small bust. So what am I? Pear? Hourglass (but not curvy). Something else?
Thanks for your question Karole! It sounds like you are an inverted triangle. A pear is largest on their hips. An hourglass has similar measurements for the bust and hips and a smaller waist. An inverted triangle has wider shoulders and more narrow hips with the bust ranging in size. Have you watched this video on an inverted triangle to see if it resonates? ua-cam.com/video/yMCNQ9I7KOc/v-deo.html
What jeans do you recommend for a pear shape with thick thighs? I normally wear an 8-10 in jeans
I'd recommend a slim straight jean style for you Tara. If you're on the shorter side, go for one that hits just above the ankle with a raw hem if you like that style. If you haven't tried Frame jeans yet, all my clients love them.
Hmm, my shoulders are broad, my bust and waist are small. I have a long torso and short thicker legs. Therefore I tend to wear wide leg jeans/trousers. If I try slim then to get them to fit my waist the legs are often too tight. I'm still confused regarding body shape.
What about your hips? If your hips are a larger measurement than your bust and waist you may be a pear shape. If your hips are more narrow and smaller than your shoulders, you may be an inverted triangle. If your bust, waist and hips are very similar measurements than you may be a rectangle.
If you feel good in wide leg pants then wear them!
Pear with heavier legs. Suggestions?
Hi Lynn, for any area that you want to minimize, avoid clothing with extra fabric on those areas like billowy skirts or wide leg pants. Focus on a slimmer, streamlined silhouette on your bottom half, and accentuating your shoulders with fabric while defining your waist to help balance the body. Hope that helps ❤
Am pear with tiny hands and legs
I'm between a pear and hourglass. Narrow shoulders, narrow waist, large bust, and large hips. But so far not found anything that feels comfortable. I feel like everything looks horrible on me and not flattering.
A pear shape has a smaller bust compared to an hourglass, so it sounds like you are more of an hourglass shape. If you haven't watched the hourglass video, you can here 👉ua-cam.com/video/-UPW2SbzbX0/v-deo.html

If I tuck my shirt in , My lower belly bulges. How to avoid it ? I'm curvy , petite , short woman.
When you do a half tuck, try only tucking a small amount of the shirt fabric into your bottoms and then smoothing it out. I find the belly shows when a lot of fabric is tucked into your bottoms.
I would never wear anything fitted on the bottom, my waist is small and hips are huge. Wow.. do not feel confident in this advise at all.
Everyone needs to wear what they feel best in! I've been styling women for almost 17 years and what I have found works best for pear shapes is a fitted bottom made from a fabric that has structure like a thick poplin, denim, wool, leather etc. I wouldn't recommend a lightweight fabric like jersey. Many of us think it works better to "hide" an area we don't feel good about by wearing oversized pieces. I find that makes that area appear wider.
But it all comes down to what makes you confident Jeannie.

This is the first time I heard that A-line skirt is a no 😮
what if you are a short wasted pear shape with large breasts? I look ridiculous with my shirts tucked in😂 I have a long thin legs as well.
I find doing a french or half tuck can still work because it's only the smallest tuck and avoiding a high waist on your bottoms.

I'm a little confused. To me most of these women more closely resemble rectangles more pears (def not Beyonce or JLo, though. To me, they are clearly pears).
