- When using the AF on the Canon R7 and also focusing manually there is one setting that can really throw your subject out of focus. In this video I will show you the one setting that can totally transform your video.

Thanks for the video, and the rant! I have a similar issue with the R6 - If you use eye detect but disable autofocus, you cannot use the "magnify", you get an error saying magnify cannot be used with eye detect. This is such a dumb error though, because it's impossible to use eye detect autofocus when autofocus is DISABLED. Hopefully they fix this with a firmware update (maybe they can auto-disable eye detect when camera's AF is disabled).
Thanks for watching. Let's hope they fix it.
This video didn't solve my technical issue, but it calmed me down a bit.
I'll try to make a long story short. I bought an R7 in February, and after a couple of months it stopped focusing well. At first I figured it was operator error, but that didn't seem to be the case. Then I thought it might be because I was using used EF lenses (16-35m f/4 L, 70-200mm f/4 L) with a Canon adapter. Bought a new RF 100-400mm, same problem. Finally sent it into Canon for service. They said they fixed the sensor position, but when I got it back, the camera was inoperable because of a shutter error. Sent it back in. Got it back yesterday with a working shutter, but as far as I can tell, the focus is no better than it was.
I'm figuring out my next step. Send the R7 in for service again? Wait to see if a firmware update makes things better? Take a chance and buy a much better lens? Sell all the Canon stuff and try a new brand? It's been an infuriating experience.
But like I said, your video calmed me down a bit. Liked and subbed for that. :)
Sorry to hear about your situation. I personally wound up selling mine, but I use it for video, and it is frustrating for video for a lot of other reasons. Do you have a different canon body by chance? I'm wondering how your lenses perform with those.
@@MichaelWTurner Good question. I have an EOS M5, and using the same EF lenses with a Canon adapter, I'm getting images that are very similar to what I get from the R7.
I'll give Canon one more chance. If they don't fix it this time, I'm gonna sell the R7 and use the money to take Ms Sony out for a date. :)
@@jbennett3578 This makes me think I shouldn't buy a used camera, since someone might be selling it because it's essentially broken.
I would consider pinning it on Canon, and not passing your problem camera to an unsuspecting buyer. Ask Canon for a refund, since they have been unable to fix the camera. Of course, you could disclose that it has trouble focusing and try to sell it honestly, but then I doubt anyone would want to buy it.
Ive had issues focusing with my r8. Ive tried to set it to whole area focus, subject tracking, area , etc. I was filming a music event and it wouldnt stay in focus when i was up close in low light with a 50mm. Ill try the people setting and see if that helps. Thx
Good luck. I would love to hear the result. Keep me posted
I have the exact problem like yours , R8 with the 50 and 85 use .... the autufocus is like drugged and feels like it's so high and drunk !!!!
7:17 since the 16th century, ALL CANON DSLR and MIRRORLESS CAMERAS ARE LIKE THAT. Once you hit REC, you’re stuck and prohibited to change almost any setting while recording, you can’t even adjust your manual Kelvin degrees. Only ISO, shutter, aperture and audio gain.
That’s why I prefer Cinema cameras for video. It’s like that and Canon will NEVER change.
I have the R3. Flagship camera. Still… same BS.
Good info!
Thx man♡
this is the same on the r10 and its driving me mad
Canon, really!!! You block third party lenses, then have a poor selection of lenses for the crop sensor cameras. To top it off, your 'new,' cameras have crappy focus issues. I'm looking to get back into photography. Seeing how you treat your customers, I'll go elsewhere.
That ancient EF lens might be the problem!
Lol...you make a great point.
Is your talking head shot fx30 or R7?
R7. The only fx30 shot is when I am shooting the R7
@@MichaelWTurner im a long time user of canon products im curious on your thoughts on the footage that comes out of sony fx30...my current workflow is canon 90d, canon xa50 and iphone 13 pro... ive been eyeing sony for a while but not convinced to switch court
@@SalsaBailaProductions So far I'm liking it a lot for too many reasons. The footage is amazing and I've barely scratched the surface yet. I'm taking it to a wedding this weekend, so I'll know more after, but I'm not worried at all. This camera should fit the bill quite nicely for me. But sometimes something like a xa50 might be more desirable for things like sporting events due to the fixed lens and crazy amount of zoom.
@@MichaelWTurner im curious if youll be able to merge both compagnies with your workflow or youll move towards one after a bunch of tests. Im definitly keep watching;)
I own the Canon 50mm RF L lens and using it for video sucks so bad because the focus jumps around terribly. Do you know any way to fix this?
Besides what I noted in the video, the only other thing I can think of is firmware updates for both the camera and sometimes they exist for the lenses too
how do u turn on focus peeking in manual video manual mode
